This is my honest review of the Winchester SX4. I have used this as a duck hunting shotgun for 6 seasons and have nothing but good things to say about the SX4. It has been extremely good to me.

Love my sx4 for waterfowl, get yours cerekoted or re blue your barrel and you will get many more years of life out of that work horse 👍
I have a Remington 870 Express that my father bought me in 1988. I have killed everything imaginable with this shotgun.
I miss my Remington 870 but I traded it for a semi auto I no longer have so now I have a Stevens 320 just so I have a beater shot gun for duck season
I’ve had an SX4 for 5 years now and it has been flawless aside from target ammo. I have cleaned it thoroughly but still doesn’t like lighter target loads consistently. As far as a hunting gun it has been one of the best I have ever used and nothing has made me want to change it in that aspect.
You can load one shell, when you cock back you have to push the bottom gate and it will stop a shell from going on the tray.
You begged for donation…for a new foul gun? Lol.
Ive had my sx4 year and a half was my first gun at 18, noticed very quickly the finish does not hold up at all on the barrel. Finally got it Cerakoted and excited to see how it holds up this upcoming season
Have had my sx4 for a year now and I absolutely love it
I had mine 3.5” waterfowl model since opening weekend of 2019. SXP failed me for the last time and traded it off (and two other rifles) to scrape up the cash for the SX4. I love it. It’s been a grouse, duck, goose and turkey killing machine since and have zero reasons to buy another shotgun. Maybe a second SX4. I really like the pattern master goose for all ranges and 3.5” 2s. The only time it failed me was after it went for a swim in 10 degree weather. Firing pin frozen up. A little solvent and she was running again and was able to finish out the limit for the day. The camo isn’t wearing much for the abuse. They are the best shotgun in its price class and above in my opinion.
I love my SX4 after several years of shooting sporting clays! I have decided to try another tho. I am disappointed that the SX4 cannot be drop shimmed. I am thinking Mossberg 940 Pro
It’s a toss up between my Maxus or SX3 in 20ga
Just bought one in real tree max 7 your review pushed me to get it!
Go fund me! Really.
Get a job
I purchased the original Super X2 in 94'. Basically the same as your SX4,,,. Among my 10+ waterfowl scatterguns, the original is still my favorite. I can't even imagine how many rounds it has thru it, and I only had to re-build it once (new shell tube, and recoil spring). Simple controls, like no mag cutoff, pull the bolt back and it stays back without needing the mag cut-off, and great ergonomics. When it comes to late season, and shooting 3 1/2" (I must be crazy, cuz, I love shooting big loud violent magnum rounds) it is my go to.
FN makes a good gun… Comparing it to a Benelli!! You could buy 3 SX4s for the price of one Benelli Super Black Eagle…. and the difference in fit, finish, and performance isn't large enough to justify the cost difference. I'll take the Winchester!!!
I just picked up a sx4 20 gauge after having a sbe3 12. Just got tired of missing ducks with it shooting high. (Rob Robert’s will fix the POI) I have a maxus 2 that’s flawless but I wanted a 20. So far it runs heavy loads just fine but jams bad on light target loads. It does seem to kick quite a bit more than my sbe3 12 gauge though. Might end up getting a sbe3 20 gauge and praying it shoots true.
SX4 is def one of the best semi autos for the price
Mossberg Maverick 88 12gauge has been unstoppable!
If you hold the gate up when pull the bolt back it will lock in place I love my sx4 been running it for about 5 years myself dove and duck hunting every year. Mine is alot like your used and abused not cleaned near enough but hasn't let me down
Dude look at the guns you buy or are looking at in the store the maxus the sx3/4 the A-5 even its ALL the exact same bolt with a little tab if you want to call it that so it wont fit in all of the guns i have an sx3 thats had 10,000+ rounds through it between doves ducks geese turkeys and clays cant bring myself to buy an sx4 because my 3 is so damn good still and its got custom cerakote and custom OK DU engraving (the state outline with the notorious DU duck head in it
Favorite duck gun: Pre – '98 Browning BPS 12 in 3.5". Built on the same frame as the BPS 10ga. She's a big pony in the weight department, but that only helps tame the recoil. Duck guns are NOT carried all day, so that added weight is a non-starter. Mine is approaching it's 3rd decade and has been flawless in operation. Literally covered in ice, frozen and still cycles, fires and stacks up the Mallards like none other. It's even a wood gun.
Love Winchester
My sx4 is a work horse. Had some issues with some dove loads but I normally use my 20ga over and under for dove. I have friends with more expensive guns that have issues and I’m usually smiling with my sx4 with no issues
Surface rust fix:
Take 0000 steel wool. Dip in gun oil. Rub gently on surface rust areas. Surface rust will come off without visible impact to bluing. Cannot speak to other finishes.
