My Brompton is about 10 years old. It has a hub in the back wheel to change gears rather than a derailleur.

I have to hold the gear shift in position 1 otherwise it will slip into 2.

I took the bike for maintenance but the problem isn’t resolved. The gears are there but I can’t keep them in gear 1 without manually holding the shift in place.

    Can anyone help pls?

The hub has a spring that wants to pull the cable back in, the shifter holds it in place. Over time the shifter can wear out or screws can loosen.

You can start by seeing how easy it is to disassemble – give it a clean with degreaser, put it back together using thread locker on the screws, and lube it with 3-in-1.

Alternatively, a replacement of this type by Sturmey Archer or Torpedo (or a dozen others) of shifter is less than £10, or you can buy a nice Sturmey Archer thumb shifter as an upgrade for about £20.
