There is ONE benefit to having a heavy bike ⬆️
On my Death Valley to Denali expedition, I will spend 6 weeks cycling from the lowest point of North America to the base of the highest point, from where I’ll continue on foot and ski.
Cycling without any vehicle support means absolute lightness is not an option. I need clothes, cold weather gear, food, spares and repairs etc.
I also need a bike which is incredibly reliable, able to carry heavy loads, cope with bad roads and easy to repair in remote areas.
This ruled out carbon or aluminium. A titanium bike could have been an option. Ultimately, I opted to stick with my tried and tested steel Genesis Tour de Fer bike, which is purpose made for cross-continental adventures.
I’m over 1500 miles in to the journey so far, and while it’s not the quickest steed, I’ve only suffered a single puncture, and no other issues whatsoever.
And when it comes to the downhills, gravity is my greatest friend.

If you don’t use metal bottles it could be lighter

The first 15 noted of this sounded like a jazz version of Kerosene if i gotta be honest

Honestly surprised you’re doing this kind of riding without fenders!!! I’ll take reliability and downhill speed any days 😅
