Day 16 of the Paris 2024 Olympics delivered a breathtaking finale! Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands capped off her incredible Olympic journey by winning gold in the women’s marathon, setting a new Olympic record in the process. Competing in the 5K, 10K, and marathon over nine days, Hassan’s triumph is one of the most remarkable feats in Olympic history.
The U.S. women’s basketball team secured their eighth consecutive gold medal with a nail-biting 67-66 victory over France. Diana Taurasi, though she didn’t play in the final, became the most decorated Olympic basketball player with six gold medals.
In track cycling, Jennifer Valente added another gold to her collection in the women’s omnium, making her the most decorated U.S. women’s cyclist in history. New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews also made history, becoming the first Kiwi to earn three cycling medals in a single Olympics.
The final day saw Italy claim their first-ever Olympic gold in women’s volleyball, while Serbia continued their dominance in men’s water polo, winning gold for the third consecutive Games. The U.S. men’s water polo team won bronze, their first medal in the sport since 2008.
As the Games concluded, the United States topped the medal table with 126 total medals, including 40 golds. China, Japan, Australia, and France rounded out the top five.
