When I did the Nottingham Canal bike ride, there was a lot of footage that I didn’t include when I edited the video for YouTube.
Watch this video and you will be able to work out just how I managed to get completely lost. All paths look the same but have the habit of ending up someehere different.
I eventually ended up at the Giltbrook Industrial Estate in Nottinghamshire.

I have lost count of the number of times I have encountered gates on "cycle paths." Lifting my partners and my EMTB over these is a real pain and dangerous. Solution, I avoid these so-called "cycle paths" now and stick to the country lanes. I suspect they don't really want cyclists on these paths. I contacted Sustrans and gave locations of obstacles but the land owners build these gates without consideration of cyclists or more likely deliberately do it to discourage cyclists. I'm lucky, I can lift my our EMTBs but a lot of older folk (I'm 68) cannot lift a 24kg 52Lbs electric bike and would have to turn around and go back. The least they could do is have signs warning you that this cycle path has gates not suitable for bikes. I meticulously plan my routes using Ordnace Survey Maps and I use a GPSmap 64s. This makes life so easy, saves having to make detours and makes the ride so much more enjoyable.
A jolly journey. Enjoyed this.
