Story
Firefighters in southern Kosovo faced a problem as they battled wildfires in the Sharr Mountains National Park: how to transport water up through the rugged terrain where fire trucks cannot reach.

But then a dentist on a motor-bike approached them and offered to help.

He is 26 year-old Allmedin Smaili.

“During the day (when big fires occurred) I did between 10 to 20 trips to the top of the mountain. I had to carry 50 liters of water. We had around five minutes to eat something and then 20 times I had to carry water to the top.”

Video from Smaili’s GoPro camera showed him handing water to his new colleagues after riding his motorbike along trails made by brown bears and wild goats.

Firefighters fill up the backpack waterbags and Smaili takes them the rest of the way.

The commander of the firefighters, Flamur Hoti, said he was grateful for the helping hand.

“The higher point where we were operating was at least two to three hours away. When you have to carry water up the slope, you cannot walk at the same speed as you would normally. We needed three hours, but he (Samili) was bringing water within 10 minutes. He is helping us a lot.”

Smaili, who lives in a nearby town, has been helping firefighters in the park where he and his friends usually go with their motorbikes to enjoy the thrill of riding over the harsh terrain.

“One of the reasons why I decided to do this is to help firefighters to extinguish the fire. And I also want to help protect this beauty of nature because people arrive here to rest and breathe fresh air. If these pine trees are destroyed then there is no reason for people to arrive at this park.”

Smaili has since recruited three other motorbiking friends to transport more water to fight the blazes.

And now a U.S. helicopter from the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo has also joined the effort.
