This took place on the Thames embankment between Chelsea and Lambeth Bridge. It’s a fast open stretch with a cycle super highway (the blue cycle lane).

The GoPro makes it look faster than it is, top speeds here are approximately 20 to 25mph. The speed limit on the road is 30mph and you can see cars passing at that speed.

My cycle to work is my daily exercise. I cycle at a speed that is comfortable but makes me work hard. If that speed is faster than the cyclist in front then I’ll pass (if I can), if it’s slower than the cyclist behind then they will pass me.

This is obviously my side of it, they other chap would no doubt have a different opinion.

The video illustrates that there can often be a bit of conflict when cycling in London. I try not to argue with people on the whole, it’s better to let it go whether you’re right or wrong. I don’t always follow my own advice…;o)

    1. You lack an awareness of the need for safety. This is a public road, not a racetrack, and if you pass that close, then at least announce your presence…"Passing on your right". C'mon, why is that so difficult for you?

    2. I got as far as your pathetic "I wasn't even in the bike lane". Then you're required to leave: "…at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) when overtaking people cycling at speeds of up to 30mph, and giving them more space when overtaking at higher speeds. passing people riding horses or driving horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allowing at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space." You have no concept of protocol, etiquette or the law.

    3. In my experience the proportion of cyclists who pass too close and, or, show inconsiderate behaviour to other road users, is just the same as with motorists. We are all hewn from the same lump of humanity.

    4. It's you that are the cunt here, typical dick move passing so close, just why? it's you that need to sort your shit out bruv then people won't retaliate, it's you that's the instigator!

    5. You're both as bad as each other. Why do you have to be in such a tearing hurry. Slow down, show more respect and consideration for other road users especially pedestrians, and above all try cycling with a smile on your face.

    6. These cyclists are as bad as each other. They'd have plenty to whinge about if a car passed this close. They've probably both been to A&E since this video was shot!

    7. The fact that he has like a whole cycling suit, cycling goggles and a cycling helmet on a racing type bike and yet he doesn't understand that unless you're overtaking, you always stay on the left side. Even if you're riding very fast you stay LEFT UNLESS you are overtaking somebody.. lmao

    8. Slipstreaming 😂
That was your fault. You could see where he was. If he's in the wrong position then either wait or let him know.
Y'know basic skills. Oh sorry, road bike 😂

    9. The guy was clearly a little miffed, but he has a point, it was a tad close… saying that his lane discipline was despicable.
He could have just said something constructive and friendly.
In this scenario, it's a good idea to make your life easier and just cycle in his slip stream, make him pedal harder.
I'd rather a cyclist like this be in front of me than behind me though…
