Cabo da Roca is the most westerly point in mainland Europe. On a handful of days of the year, train, coach and bus timetables line up well enough to theoretically mean you can get there from London St Pancras in 24 hours.
Join Mrs Turtle and myself as we head off to find out if the timetables are correct…or if the public transport gods have different plans for us.

Another great video Jo, love watching them. Sad about not completing in 24 hours but the main thing is you made it to the end and that is to your credit rather than giving up.
Just one small thing which would make your videos even better, maybe use a mic when speaking in noisy places as was difficult to follow at times what you were saying. I would always persist as I have seen all of your videos and know they are always great but wouldn't want this to put other viewers off.
Looking forward to the next one already Jo 👍😃
A good point where does Europe end.I think that the Canary Islands are geographically an African archipelago political situation aside.Question mark with the Azores and Maderian archipelagos as they are further north. On the Asian side even more complicated.I was in Armenia a few years ago and asked a local if Armenia was Europe or Asia and he said Asia.Yet a Georgian I asked claimed Georgia was Europe.Never got to Azerbaijan to ask them!
Thank you for another delightful video. It was a shame you couldn't make it in 24 hours, but at least we were able to see a little of Vitoria on the way, which seems like a charming town.
Its always a good day when another travelling turtle video drops! They're the perfect thing to watch while I weave chainmail
Great video as usual, thanks for bringing us along for the ride!
I truly hope that in 2-3 years time there will be a daytime Lisbon-Irun train, or at least a Lisbon-Salamanca train, with a connecting train to Irun/Hendaye. RENFE giving the Sud-Expresso a chop was truly criminal.
I enjoyed the Berwick-upon-Tweed comparison. Mostly because I've just started my week's holiday in Berwick-upon-Tweed 🎉
fabulous
Wonderful narration, anecdotes, and dare I say it, cultural commentary. You've become one of my favourite travel youtubers! I would love to see you somehow travel Scandinavia, or eastern Europe – your journeys don't always have to start from London!
As Mum would always sing:
Toreador, don't spit on the floor!
Use the cuspidor, that is what it's for.
An excellent adventure!
My parents took me to france every year for the first 20 years of my life, and orangina is one of the quintessential tastes of france for me. I don't drink it in the uk out of respect lol.
How a travel story should be told and filmed. A delight. Thank you and we look forward to more adventures.
Another enjoyable adventure. It does prove how fortunate you were with all of your connections through England,Wales and way out west to Ireland.
Good video. Still waiting for the lowest bus stop to the highest bus stop in the UK video 👍😁
As usual a magnificent journey thanks for taking us along for the ride 😀
A pleasant surprise when the video dropped last night. Entertaining and highly informative as ever, and sorry that the best laid plans of turtle and man came to an abrupt halt in a non-descript back street in Bayonne. Looking forward to your next challenge!
The international train travel is kind of getting killed by EMU‘s. EMU can’t run in many countries at most 3-4 while the old normal passenger carriages could run in so many countries just look on the side of a French corail there are like 10 countries that they can run in. Just think about that a train from Hendaye to Wladiwostok would be theoretically possible with Russian equipment but do too current world events very unlikely. Let’s hope that the future of train travel is better. As always your videos are the best. And to turtle keep your shell up.
This brought back many happy memories. I holidayed at Estoril in 1964 and visited Cabo de Roca amognst many other places. More recently while living in southern Spain we drove and stopped at Vitoria, a real cross roads of transport. Thank you so much again.
Thank you so much for your wonderful work! I've seen so many of Mrs. Turtle's journeys, this has definitely been one of her most beautiful ones!
Another fantastic blog, and so well written as usual. Can't wait foryour nexy one
I enjoy your videos but the audio was a bit off / muffled in this one 😅
Oh happy day. Another Travelling Turtle Video! I haven't even watched it yet but I had to comment because I'm so excited! ❤
Naturally, your next challenge would be to travel from the most Sutherly to the most northerly bus stop in Europe.
Really good watch, as always! 🙂
time for take 2. 😛
Re: Improving connectivity?
There is at least some hope on the horizon although I accept it won't be any time soon – plans to connect Lisboa directly into the European High Speed network are now advancing and maybe, just maybe, ten years from now a direct service will operate between Madrid and Lisboa with a platform to platform journey time of just 3 hours?
What track gauge this new line will use; 1668 or 1435mm (maybe both?) is not quite clear yet.

Great video. I caught the train overnight from henday to Lisbon in summer 2019 and I am glad I did. It is history now. Sniff have reinstated some night trains, let’s hope Spain and Portugal do likewise at some point.
🐢🚅🚆🚋🚊🚌🥧🥰 TYFS another adventure
Well, you can’t win ’em all, Jo!! A good excuse for some interesting places, lovely (and not so lovely) scenery, some puns and even some singing!! That gauge changer is amazing. Good luck to Mrs Turtle and yourself for the next adventure!
Nice storytelling, great sights that are far from the ubiquitous tourist zones that are associated with a Spanish vacation. Point to note. 17:02 that is a Chinese shop. Sort of cross between a hardware store, and cheap tat as found in Poundland. Chinese shops ( of various sizes) like that are all over Spain.
hope you do a return journey video.
Thank you for yet another superb video. You have such a wonderful way with words and you never fail to fascinate and educate. Splendid stuff!
Wonderful, as always. I particularly enjoyed Doug Maxwell's 'Invitation to the Castle Ball'. And the trip down to Cascais on the train. I've watched them several times at Cais de Sodre but never caught one. That suggests I'm going to have to accept the open invitation my Lisbon friends gave me.
The cambiador bit got me good
Another glorious video – was going to watch last night, but then decided to watch today instead and take the time to really enjoy it on 'the big tv'. 😊❤
