After the heights of the Dark Peak over the last couple of stages we were looking forward to the more moderate elevation on this one. Whilst we still hit over 400 metres at times, the ascents were so gradual we almost didn’t realise we were climbing. The day started at the Railway pub where we had finished our previous walk. The free parking near the canal was a welcome site. A short canal trip lead us to our first ascent of the day. Long and gradual, we ascended across Marsden Moor before joining the Pennine Way on the final climb to White Hill. Most of our ascent done, we made excellent progress on the great paths as we made our way along the border between Lancashire and West Yorkshire. Before crossing the M62 via a footbridge, we had the luxury of a Coffee at Nicky’s Food Bar. The ascent to Blackstone Edge was equally as pleasant and we were soon on the rocky escarpment. With views down to Rochdale and the surrounding villages we mad great progress once again. The White House Pub was too inviting not to stop for a beer. Fueled by the regular stops and refreshments we made haste around Langfield Common as the faint sight of Stoodley Pike Monument got slowly closer. The monument Itself was impressive and we took advantage of the viewing platform to get 360 views across the landscape. An easy descent to the Rochdale Canal followed and we followed this for the last couple of miles to our destination. A thoroughly enjoyable walk and we also passed the half way point to our goal.
