E-bikes might be a threat to cycling but the reason why might not be what you think. The real issue is that powerful motorbikes are being lumped together with everyday, well-regulated e-bikes. This confusion is causing a real friction, especially on cycling paths shared with pedestrians. What’s the solution?

Plus, Si & Hank give you a roundup from a busy week in ultra-endurance, bring you the latest in hot tech, and reveal why Nils Politt just joined a very exclusive list…

    1. If it goes the same way as model RC flying with anything being classed as a drone or unmanned Ariel vehicle and everything being regulated under the same umbrella. Then ebikes are stuffed

    2. E-MTBs in the U.S. seem to be banned from national forests, because there they are classed the same as motorcycles. This is restricting their use on some MTB trail systems. The laws are lagging behind the technology.

    3. They are motorized vehicles. They have overwhelmed our local trails and basically destroyed the biking experience. The bike industry went for a nice green washy name to expand their market and they have flooded the trails with unskilled riders.
I have no problem with e bikes replacing cars on the roads, but they don't belong on non motorized trails. No problem with disabled folks using them as bikes.
They will just be getting faster and faster at the same power because that's the nature of technology.

    4. Unrestricted e-bikes are a problem, and class 2 e-bikes with throttles are a problem. There ought to be some way to enforce laws about de-restricting an e-bike, and e-bikes should not be allowed to have a throttle at all.

Of course the jerks being jerks doing jerky things is the real problem, but since jerkiness can not be regulated by law, it’s the hardware that has to be, and all of the responsible users and would-be users will have to suffer because of the behavior of a few jerks.

    5. Careful definitions of throttle bike vs. peddle assist vs. electric moto are crucial.
But, in my state of California, enforcement of rules won’t happen. Would love to see county sheriff on my local trails.
      Never happens….

    6. Or, you could include the use of type 2 on multi use infrastructure, with posted speeds. Requiring us to mix it up with automobiles just because they reach 45 kmh is backwards dangerous. Locally, multi use paths rarely post any sort of guidance. Ignorant riders, mostly new, get no signals from the infrastructure.

    7. I had an old bloke (literally like 70!) come around a blind corner on the bikeway on an ebike, overtaking another older couple and clean me up. They give people such a over cofidence in their ability to handle, he came off second best in the crash then prodeeded to blame me 😂

    8. I think assist up to 20 is reasonable. Helps you keep up with most city traffic.

I bought a second hand R&M roadster with the Bosch HS motor, had no idea about legislation until I took it into LBS for a service and they explained. Looked just like the ‘standard’ roadster except it had a horn fitted and assist up to 28.

Nobodys ever batted an eye at it. I ride at about 18.

I did enquire about getting it road legal but try finding an insurer who knows about a 45kpm e-bike, all they do is class it as a moped, which it’s not, plus who’d do an MOT on what’s essentially a pedal bike?

    9. Ban throttle-assist ebikes (class 2). Allow pedal-assist only (class 1 and 3). 99% of the kids in California just use throttles and don't bother to pedal causing all kinds of havoc.

    10. E-Bikes… yes, I have a real-life story to share. A friend of mine, whose name and contact I can send you by email if you wish, was cycling on his e-bike (50 km/h) on a separate cycling lane in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. A woman, also on a similar e-bike, came from the opposite direction on the same lane and made a maneuver mistake. As a result, they collided; two times 50 km/h makes around 100 km/h…

The woman died on the spot. My friend was heavily injured; he survived but is now partially handicapped and suffers from permanent headaches.

    11. By the way. Cheers 🥂 and congrats, for those world récords at the velodrome. 😀👍🚴🏻‍♂️🏆🥇.
So, here in Mexico, soon will plate or regulate it’s circulation. Say hello to Dann, fit and beer guys.

    12. Changing the language from e-bikes to pedal assist bikes would help quite a lot. I see so many fat tire e-bike (moped) go flying down the multi use paths. They’re loud, inconsiderate, not well managed.
