It’s been nearly two years since I fished my beloved River Trent in Nottinghamshire… An iconic fishing venue that I first journeyed to from Sheffield, with my granddad, before going on to hone my skills on the mighty waterway with the city’s junior match angling squad.

Over the years I’ve loved fishing many methods and baits on the Trent, such as stick float with hemp and casters, or a groundbait feeder, and catching everything from roach, dace and chub, to bream, eels and perch.

One species of fish I wasn’t used to catching from the Trent were PIKE – the freshwater crocodile as us coarse anglers sometimes refer to them – but this summer trip saw me land yet another PB, following an epic battle on light trotting gear! And it turned out to be one of several river monsters to test my nerves…

In this video I visit a stunning day ticket stretch of the River Trent near Hoverhingham, run by Midland Angling Society. The sun shone and the fish were biting in numbers, so join me for this extended trip down memory lane.

    Sit back, relax and enjoy.

    1. Brilliant video, that stretch is very good, even had wild brown trout of 3lb slightly further up (about afew fields upstream) ,lovely seeing the different species, well done on the pike blimey lol, towards newark (where I am ) ,you got cats, sturgeon, zander etc amongst the usual suspects too, truly like a European river nowadays, wonderful to watch this, tight lines, good health and safe travels, cheers craig

    2. He;;o John. Great to see another chill session, Much needed right now. I didn't miss the last 2 videos, I just saw them late, as I have been away with visits to hospital. Toothy critters on 2lb line is always impressive, even more so when they're big.
      Take care John. TTFN

    3. What a cracking days fishing john, with a trio of pike to boot !! .. That truly is a story to tell the grandchildren for years and years !

      Thanks for sharing
      Paul.

    4. Still an exceptional river is the mighty Trent. Takes me back to my match fishing days, fishing the Nationals on that river. Nice mixed bag of healthy looking fish, but my tip to you is, next time you’re Pike fishing use a stronger hook length than 2.6lbs!😏🤣🤣 As we get older, nostalgia becomes a big part of our lives, & this (along with many of you great videos) certainly brought that feeling to me. As always John, Great video & Thank You for the time & effort you put in to bring it to us. 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻🎣

    5. Well done John. You really do deserve a huge pat on the back to get all 3 Pike in on 2lb bottom. I would count the 13 as a PB you caught it. As I said before my daughter lives in Nottingham, I really should on the Trent real soon.
      Tight lines.

    7. Great video. I grew up fishing the Trent from Clifton to Newark as a kid and then moved to Canada at 21. Your video brought back some great memories catching Barbel & Chubb at Clifton Grove. Thanks 🇬🇧🇨🇦..

    8. Hello John, great session, wonderful surroundings, does life get any better? Days on the Avon & Severn with my old man are memory bank gold. So happy to have Pagey as my bank buddy, keep making happy memories. Take care, tight lines🐟🪱🎣👍

    9. Always enjoy your videos John. A few years back I managed to land an 11lb pike myself while on the stick float at Burton Joyce and broke my landing net. Nice to see your channel is growing steadily. Looking forward to more of your vids 🎣

    10. Just awesome lovely trip down memory lane for me at Thrumpton stretch.Take a bow that's some proper angling with the Pike.Middy should send you some Pike gear.Well done mate 👍😁👏

    11. Love the passion. I too grew up in Sheffield and fished the club matches on the Trent, Witham, Middle level, Sibsey trader, Fourty Foot, etc etc. The happiest days of my life. Now its all hook a duck fishing on commercials, you could put a wellington boot on and catch Carp. Not Angling for me. Thanks for the video.

    12. What a brilliant video…absolutely love your whole style and presentation. Really, really enjoyable to watch and super impressed with your pike fishing prowess 😂 👍

    13. what’s a cracking video and what a mixture of fish. The type of fishing that I love doing and I will be doing when I go fishing with my Old Man at the end of the month down to the river Avon near Evesham. Fished the river Trent a couple of times and it’s a lovely river. My favourite river close to me is the river swale . It’s great when you catch big fish like Pike on very light gear and it’s amazing just what fish you can catch when everything is all balanced nicely … keep them videos coming and memories with your dad and family are always the best. All the best to you, buddy and just subscribed. Now it’s time to catch up watching some of your other videos.👍👍😁😁🎣🎣

    14. What a great video! Surprise catches are always fun! I was out on my local water chasing carp, not big ones, around the 6lb – 8lb mark but always good sport and they fight like 20lb+… Managed to catch a couple around that weight but also 3 signal crayfish! The mark is swarmed by them at the moment and makes it almost unfishable 😞 I was lucky to get the two carp, a mark that normally produces 7 – 10 a session 😞

    15. You've really got me going now mate ,I'd love a go on this ,far away from commercials that we all seem to fish nowadays ,thanks for bringing a lot of memories john , really enjoyed it .

    16. my best ever day on trent was approx 35 years ago at beeston wier mmy Fav spot very erarly morn with earth worm from the football field at the back and 3 tins on tuna cat food as ground bait in an 8 hour fishing we estimated i had nearly 200lbs of mostly chub up to 6lb perch 2.3 lbs . boy if we had cell phone with cameras or video eqquipment back then to show everybody and showed on youtube i am sure there would have been super many comments . but at least i have the memories in my head that all that matters Roll on foor the great trent

    17. A nice days pike fishing eh John,at least some decent roach came out laters eh mate, there are some monster pike in the trent aren't,I've heard there are some big catfish in various areas which would not be a surprise with plenty of other silvers to prey on,tite lines

    18. Really enjoyed the video, nice to the stick fished again, not many bother these days.
I've fished many venues on the Trent from Stoke Bardolph to Collingham/ Besthorpe, and had many great matches, from the 1970's up to present day, had some cracking days on stick float, caster & hemp, sometimes tares, never ever used to see a pike, now days just when you get a nice shoal in your swim the pike turn up, and the roach, dace, chub etc just disappear and you have to start building the swim again, and one of the places where pike ALWAYS turn up is this road stretch between Caythorpe & Hoveringham, yes it is comfortable cheap fishing with easy parking at most pegs, but the pike have somewhat spoiled the Trent for me, and i rarely fish it anymore.

    19. 6:46 anyone else noticed how nearly all flowers have little to no flying insects these days… there's a lot of data from across Europe that are showing a 60% decline in flying insects but it feels like more than that when I'm out and about. Used to drive the car on a 3 or 4 hour trip and it would be covered in lacewings, beetles, flys, bees etc. But now the cars are almost clean bar dust!
