Social media misinformation has fuelled riots in Southport following the killing of three girls. But misinformation thrives in a vacuum – so how much of this can be attributed to the anonymity afforded to the suspect?
As he is under 18, his name cannot legally be reported by news organisations. This has opened the door was illegitimate organisations and actors to spread a fake name to seemingly advance their political aims.
But the law that enforces this is nearly 100 years old, and was last updated in the 1980s. Legal expert Joshua Rozenberg (03:14) explains to Nick Ferrari why the law is as it is, and what effect it has had on the Southport case. Sociologist Dr Aaron Winter (06:33), who specialises on the far-right, also gives his view.
It comes as the mother of the seven-year-old girl who was killed in a stabbing spree in Southport has called for an end to the violence after yesterday’s riot.
Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Bebe King, six, and Alice Aguiar, nine, were killed in the attacks on Monday.
Their deaths sparked riots on the streets of Southport last night but Elsie’s mum, Jenni, has called for an end to the violence.
“‘This is the only thing that I will write, but please stop the violence in Southport tonight,” she said.
“The police have been nothing but heroic these last 24 hours and they and we don’t need this.”

Nick is well aware that if a suspect is a child, they can't be named
James Bulger was a child who was murdered by two 10 year old children. The names of those two children was reveal because of the seriousness of the crime. Venables and Thompson both 10 brutally murdered James Bulger. So why were their names revealed and not someone almost double their age. You see, you are a liar. You are covering up for something. That is why their names are not revealed.
He just said the internet has no checks and balances. That in itself is just a bold face lie. Which is misinformation in itself. I see countless posts that community notes on X flags that are left and right wing posts daily. So I’m more inclined to trust sources I can cross check than a guy who just lied on the radio.
This is absolutely disgusting …let’s take a step back and realise that innocent children have died here …why would they be not be upset and angry and shame on you for trying to sidestep the real story here ..to be quoting a law from 1933 here in protecting a person under 18 is hollow and shameful ..there are so many fundamental wrongs that have happened here and to try and to start getting fanciful with language is truly a waste of time …how deluded some of you are as intelligent as you may be and shame for you with such a wonderful grasp of the English language you use it to try and justify such flawed and whimsical ideas
