Stralau is a district of the Berlin suburb of Friedrichshain in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, located on a spit of land between the Spree and Lake Rummelsburg. The name goes back to a village that originated here under the name Stralow and became part of Greater Berlin in 1920. The word is of Slavic origin and means “place of arrows”, which is due to the shape of the peninsula.

Rummelsburg is a subdivision or neighborhood of the borough of Lichtenberg of the German capital, Berlin.

In Berlin’s east, Friedrichshain has a punky, alternative vibe. Linked to the Kreuzberg district by the castle-like Oberbaum Bridge over the Spree River, it’s home to techno clubs like Berghain. Political murals cover the East Side Gallery, a preserved section of the Berlin Wall. Soviet-era buildings line Karl-Marx-Allee. Indie boutiques and casual eateries near leafy Boxhagener Platz attract an international crowd.
