      Hello!

I need a new wide cassette to run with a Shimano M3020 derailleur on my gravel bike, officially limited to 40T max cog and 45T max capacity. I have a 16T difference at the front.

The safe choice is the 11-40 Shimano CS-HG400-8 but there is also this 11-42 cassette from Sunrace, a brand I never heard of.

I’m happy to greedily test the capacity limits to get those two extra teeth, and I also know that Shimano is very conservative with max cog limits.

Is Sunrace a reputable brand, or could it come with a lower quality than Shimano?

Given the capacity limit of the rear derailleur, and the potential “quality uncertainty” of Sunrace, what would you do?

      Thank you!

As far I am concerned, sun race is an old brand. Never rode their cassetes, but used a 8 speed chain and didn’t feel any difference from a Shimano one.

    3. Sunrace is a good brand – been around forever and they make affordable bike components. If your derailleur can actually do 42t then go for it… the sunrace might weigh more than the shimano but performance should be very similar
