Instead of the traditional march into the stadium, more than 10,000 athletes paraded on around 100 boats for almost four miles down Paris’ Seine river.
Athletes on board the boats caught glimpses of key sites including the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame, as well as several Olympic venues including La Concorde Urban Park (3X3 basketball, breaking, BMX freestyle cycling, skateboarding), Invalides (archery, athletics – marathon finish, road cycling – time trial start) and the Grand Palais (fencing, taekwondo).

One of the most boring opening ceremonies ever. Some people who were there left early because they couldn't see anything. If you're in a stadium the whole crowd gets to see the whole ceremony but on a river the crowd only gets to see what's taking place directly in front of them on any specific bit of river so they miss the rest. I wouldn't have paid those ridiculous prices to get a ticket for a show i couldn't see. I think the stadium ceremonies were much better. Beijing was the most impressive. Paris felt a big Eurovision party. Did the athletes even get to see anything or did they just get off the boats at the other end of the river and go home? And who thought of putting the flame in a big balloon? In the Louvre – not even in the stadium or a place where the athletes perform.

i’m from algeria and we have a dark history with the seine river. back in the day when algeria was a french colony they killed so many innocent algerian people in october 1961 and threw their bodies in that river where they held the parade. our athletes should’ve stayed in hotel and not participate in the ceremony.
