Cooler today so an easier ride. First section had perfect surface. Last 21km were signed as ‘bumpy’ and our side of the road seemed the most cracked and patched. Flat, quiet roads, no harvester movement – not sure if that was because it was Sunday and they have a day of rest or because of the rain last night. More large-scale agriculture – similar to what we saw in Croatia. Some huge haystacks (rolls) and large animal sheds. Various factories and large grain silos. Interesting coffee stop in Sremska Mitrovica. The Old Wheat Market surrounded by grand old buildings. The riverbanks with terracing and a very large pedestrian bridge with no apparent traffic bridge in sight in either direction. Followed this river off and on to Šabac.
Found the main pedestrian street which was close to our booking. Early arrival. Lunch & Aperol Spritz is the order. Still warm 31deg but better than yesterday. Aperols haven’t been on the menu for a few days so this one is very welcome. Another win with the apartment. Very central, great use of space, really big walk-in shower which is a bonus. Some bathrooms we’ve had have been certainly adequate but very tight. Town centre has great open space with many families mingling. One black dog (town dog) seems to claim the town water feature. Dunking himself in to cool off. Found a good corner restaurant where we enjoyed people watching whilst having dinner. Another thunderstorm at 8pm – just as we walked home from dinner. The town centre suddenly picked up pace as bars moved soft furnishings inside, closed umbrellas, people quickened their pace to either go home or find shelter. Like a busy ant’s nest when rain is threatening. Made it with only a few damp patches. Rumbling and grumbling away as the rain steadily falls. I do love a thunderstorm and we’ve had plenty on our trip, thankfully mostly at night.
