30 +deg. Into the heart of Eastern Croatian agriculture today. We must be back in stork territory. One nest at our coffee stop and another here. 4 stork chicks in the nest here. First 15km was a continuation of yesterday’s busy truck route. At least there were long straight stretches. All trucks were so good, waiting patiently and giving us space. Relief to turn off this road. Have a quick break in a park beside the local fire station. Then onto lesser roads as we crossed from one valley to the next. Large scale agriculture. Case headers & Tractors. Headers seem to be on the move. Early barley ready to harvest. All farm buildings in the villages. The farms seem to create the village. A couple of farm dogs thought we might be fun to chase. They gave up pretty quickly with some harsh words from us. Corn/maize – huge amount. Also sunflowers – unfortunately not yet in flower. Chatted to a young agric fertiliser rep at our coffee stop. Corn mainly for cattle food. Lots of shedded cattle here – mainly Croatian Simmental we were told. Some corn for human consumption – corn kernels and flour. Italy is a large buyer of Croatian corn. This is the best corn growing region in Croatia.
The second part of the ride was beautiful. Away from traffic we get to hear the birds again, see the landscape and stop to appreciate the view. We needed to find shady stops today. Our host Martina was excited to welcome us as only her second guests. Welcoming beer and sweets was appreciated. Found a back fence to hang our washing on. Walk around town. Larger than what it appeared the way we cycled in. Lot of work being done on a new town square. Flowers blooming on roundabouts. A number of bars & restaurants. Very smart, neat town. Dined at the Zebra.
