  1. IMHO one of the issues is that cars are being humanized by headlines like "a car has crashed into a building" or "a cyclist has been killed by a car" while people who cycle are being dehumanized by calling them/us "cyclists". For most people it's just a technicality, but the use of language shapes our thoughts.

  2. As an avid cyclist, 20k miles since 2020 in the Phoenix, AZ area, I have seen cyclists do dumb*ss moves as much as I have seen drivers do them.
No sense in being dead right. Cyclists the need to ride more defensively and with extra courtesy: get a bell and a mirror.
    Be the change 😇

  3. The problem reduces down to the same question – is it more nature than nurture? Evidence is slowly supporting determinism and hence nature. Sure, some people can be persuaded, but most will be reluctant to change, especially if they are negatively impacted. Quite simply, people believe what they want to believe. The funny fact that always gets me is the one where most drivers think they are better than average… Confidence can be a bad thing… All one can do is try to anticipate trouble and avoid it. At the end of the day physics always wins.

  4. Just a few minutes in but, FINALLY!! These aren't just my thoughts on car culture, others have them too. Ban car advertising like tobacco, turn around car size increases.

  5. One of the biggest factor is legislation. In German law the fluidity and safety of motorized traffic is a key goal. When a city/ community is trying to change speed limits or make roads less straight (slows down traffic) to make it saver for everyone to be outside of a car, it likely to get stopped in court.
It's absolutely astounding that avoiding traffic deaths is NOT the no1 goal of traffic laws.

  6. I LOVE cycling, and I LOVE motorcycles and rollerblading etc. But cars and their adoption and normalization are a byproduct of tehcnological advancement and their own ease of use… not from institutions normalizing them. I prefer a culture of car ownership to one of public transportation mainly because I would rather live in a culture of ownership than a subscription based economy where our lives are controlled by a select few corporations… ownership over subscriptions helps combat economic consolidation

  7. Yes, the subject matter is quite upsetting to us cyclists, but what stands out to me the most is the high levels of professionalism and production on this video!

This could easily be a documentary on the bbc ect. Well done si and team. You guys have come such a long way!

  8. Just yesterday a man in his 4×4 pick-up tried to drive me off the road because 'I passed him on the inside'. I was in a cycle lane approaching traffic lights. He then shouted out of his window that I should respect him 🙄

  9. Yes, I am aware that this is a thing and I think your video, with 3.28 M subscribers, is SO NECESSARY. As a cyclist with lots of experience cycling in the city of Montréal, drivers have rolled down their window a few times to tell me that it's dangerous for them and I because I am cycling on a road without a cycling path. I never have the time to engage in a conversation with them to point problems like you do in your video, but motorists are just generally uninformed when it comes to urban planning, health, cycling, safety and statistics. In Canada, cyclists are forced to use roads, and not sidewalks, so they are forced to obey the same driver's manual that motorists have to study to get their permits. Cyclists need to be treated as a car would in the streets, and despite earning their driver's license, I have yet to see drivers treat bicycles with as much prudence and respect as they would another car. Cyclists and pedestrians are the underdogs, making the world better and safer, but being blamed that it's dangerous for them exist in the same place as cars. I hope many more channels cover this topic and get it thriving in popular media.

  10. Thanks GCN. This gave me solid insight and literature on a topic that is super important in so many ways. Frustrating, but enlightening.

  11. Don't know if I would say I knew motonormativity was a thing but it does make sense. I work as a civil engineer and the emphasis is very much on the vehicular traffic. I'm fortunate to live where we have a fairly decent public transportation system. I used public transit during the work week to get to work or I combine public transit w/ my bicycle. Less so on the weekends when I do use my car to do shopping. Every little bit counts though, at least I like to think it does.

  12. Love this! I’ve been trying to make these points to friends, relatives, colleagues for ages. Thanks for making this video & keep up the good work!

  13. I really hate our supermarkets when you are walking around car parking, in most places it’s only designed for cars, and pedestrians are forced to be in the way.
