The village of Appenzell and the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden are situated in a singularly beautiful landscape of rolling hills. The region is known for rural customs and traditions such as the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances, as well as hiking tours in the Alpstein region.

Appenzellerland is the name of the hilly landscape of the two (half) cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden (Protestant-Reformed) and Appenzell Innerrhoden (Roman Catholic), characterized by pastureland and scattered settlements

Completely surrounded by the canton of St. Gallen, it is bordered to the north by the city of St. Gallen, to the east by the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, to the south by the Appenzell Alps with Säntis and Hoher Kasten, and to the west by the Toggenburg. The average altitude is 800 metres.

In the south of the country, the hilly, sparsely forested landscape gradually takes on a pre-alpine character. The Ebenalp is a mountain range covered in alpine pastures, overlooked by bizarre rock formations. The Alpine peaks of Säntis and Churfirsten are at an altitude of two and a half thousand meters. The Säntis forms a double peak with the Altmann, both of which belong to the Alpstein massif. In the foothills covered in high pastures, widely scattered farmsteads characterize the landscape. The Seealpsee with its typically dark water surface is also located there.

In addition to agriculture (cheese production), Appenzellerland lives mainly from tourism and small businesses. Pasture farming is still widespread today. The drive of cattle up to and down from the alpine pastures is still a major event in southern Appenzellerland, surrounded by festivities, where traditional costumes are omnipresent.

With about 7,000 inhabitants, Appenzell is the political, economic and cultural center of Appenzell Innerrhoden, the smallest Swiss canton. The car-free village beckons with pretty lanes and a myriad of small stores and boutiques that are ideal for shopping and browsing. The facades of the buildings are decorated with frescoes. Appenzell Museum, which is in the town hall, shows a cross section of Appenzell’s history and culture.
