uh let’s bring in a national treasure uh one of the voices of football Martin Tyler is on his way there he’s on a train hey Martin how are you now I’ve just arrived I’m at Berlin Station ready to go and for once in my life I can say we and not England yeah as a commentator working for British Broadcasting British Sky broadcasting and mostly British audiences it was very difficult to be too patriotic and it shouldn’t be really um but today I can be and I suddenly I haven’t got any England memorabilia I’m looking around the station and they red shirts white shirts scarves well it’s probably a bit too hot for scarves but no it’s it’s it’s different for me but it’s a thrill to be here I’m very lucky I had a own in German television who’s promised me a ticket got to the final so he he delivered so wonderful I’m hoping I’m hoping the team delivered toight I mean no one would like there nothing greater than Martin if you went full face paint I’m going to say this suggest Martin that if you can’t find anything we just take a shirt off yeah and and get a firework out and then be then be thrown out of the ground legendary Martin um we heard G sou get there saying oh you know that game in 96 was nil nil would you take nil nil now and penalties no no I want I want England to win I I think the difference perhaps today I followed the tournament really closely watched all the all the coverage and um I’ve always felt the teams that England have played haven’t had that potential match winner you know I would have been surprised with the greatest respect to say Memphis dep pie if he’ knocked England out you know um but Spain have got those players Danny ELO is my player of the tournament I think he’s a wonderfully skillful shrewd technically good between the lines can score goals can make goals he he’s a faer but England have got some whole team of match winners really and the moments of I think winning is all the only the only thing that you have to do in these tournaments I accept that there is criticism from where the team has played but we’re winning and then that’s all I all right if it’s nil nil on penalties as long as we win I take it what I want is for all you young youngers to be able to experience what 1966 was like yeah you was a reducing number of people who could remember it and and I’m lucky enough to be one of those and it just changed I mean the 60s was pretty different to the way the the world is now and it it was a happier time I think generally but the country went crazy and attendances of the next season were skyrocketing it was just just great really really simp symptomatic of that that year and here we are can we talk about 2024 in the same breath so it isn’t the World Cup we still got that in our science but it would be fantastic and to get to a final on foreign soil is also brilliant that is history we just want to silver where to go with it um for Harry Kane I I I just feel like it would be so obviously I want England to win but I want him to have a meaningful impact for all those people that say he’s never won a trophy he hasn’t had his greatest tournament he has still scored goals but I just feel Harry Kane needs to do something he doesn’t have to play the whole game but score and then he can finally put to bed everyone just saying yes but about him well even if he scores in England lose he’ll get the Golden Boot probably which wouldn’t be too bad would it for for a tournament’s work but of course we want him to score and win um he’s a great PL I was involved in a debate yesterday about who’s English England’s greatest ever player and his name is up on that list of candid probably Bobby Charon as a World Cup winner would would probably shade it I guess but uh and obviously Jeff HST with a hatrick in in a World Cup final but Harry Harry works with the team I just wonder guys whether he’s 100% fit and I I would if I was in G’s position Harry’s position I would keep it under reps I wouldn’t go out and say well go easy on him because of this we might find out something after the game he hasn’t looked quite as um quite as able to cover the distances really as the coaches would say um but yeah I wish him and I wish all all the players every success in a few hours time and to be in the stadium hopefully to be able to um to take my shirt up put the face paint on and do all the things that you’d like me to do I probably will if he can win you are not just a a a commentator Martin know I know you I know you as a a football coach as well for to V woking you were you were the woking assistant manager we had some great battles um as a coach as a coach H how have you uh felt about GIS Southgate totally positive because of what I said earlier he wins you know and what do you want to do play well and lose no coach or or take that um and I I feel that Vindication is a word I’ve read a lot in the in the media in the last few days um what he’s done even if england do lose you just look at what’s happened before look at the the messing that we in when he took over and how he’s turned it around how he’s brought Integrity uh just a decent person as well as a very good coach he’s got all the players um popular with the England supporters I I’ve spent a couple of days with England and they they they love him they they you know they believe that the everything that’s good about English football comes from him you know so I it would be a great way I think probably whatever the result is it might be his last game in charge um but those detractors you know be careful what you wish for it’s marvelous is been all the tournaments that he’s been in charge and he has he has made the um the three lines proud again roaring again and being in sports media your whole life I think I think the way that this this team operate that the they’re they’re pretty open aren’t they they’re pretty honest and they seem pretty happy to talk they like they like the media being around they let you watch them play darts or you play darts against them you know and uh there is there is that kind of inclusivity which is the word we should use generally about society and why shouldn’t football be a bit more inclusive it was very inclusive when I started guys you know you could pop down to a training session and you know people would say oh what you you’re on telly are you we haven’t been on telly for a while oh now everyone’s obviously very protective of of the way they go about um preparing for matches and I respect that but the truth funny enough we played Watford at woki third around the FA Cup and people were coming up to me saying can you tell us the team can you tell us the team a real Ro reversal I’ve been asking for teams for 50 years you know um but uh no listen if it’s if it’s Harry Kane’s night or the squad’s night it’s GTH KN as well and I’m sure I’m sure rise to Garrett isn’t too far away yes uh Martin as you say there is a chance this will be southgate’s last game in charge of England if if they were to win this do you think he should continue or has the cycle reached its its natural end whatever the outcome do you think well a couple of things bar that I think he he had to think long and hard about staying on after the World Cup in katar I know that that wasn’t an instant decision really and that he may have thought the journey even if prize is there the Holy Grail is at the end of The Journey the Journey’s been too Troublesome to go through again but as an England fan and as a respector of proper people doing proper jobs I’d only be too happy if he stayed but I know there’ll be plenty of your listeners saying well it’s time to move on where do you move on be careful what you wish for and all that stuff um so either way if it’s his decision it should be done with our blessing all our blessing um a lot of people going on Vibes Martin tonight who who in your heart is saying is you know is going to win this for England tonight well I think the great thing about it is anybody we know ol’s come on ol Watkins has come on the win game zaka can win a game Kane can win a game we know um there are plenty of others has scored important goals but more than important crucial historic goals and there’s pretty much everybody in the team de and rice might Land one from 25 yards you know yeah and we probably missed a bit of Harry MaGuire up for the corners um but there are there are lots of way for England to win it but as I say that the difference I think in this game is that and I do think England will win but the difference is they can be as they have got but how many how many wins can you have in a row before I’m sure Charlie remember talking winning maybe two or three in a row come on let’s let the trash talking sleeping dogs lie a lot of water under the bridge since then I I just hope um GTH team talk is as good as Alan d was at talking in the first round of that FA Cup that took the three all was the best game I can sit and talk about this all day Martin the three was an unbelievable game I think I think we’re I think we’re off message now but and by the way I’ve really enjoyed your work on T
