Welcome to our video capturing the vibrant atmosphere of Teurastamo Jazz 2024, held on July 13th at Teurastamo in Helsinki, Finland!
Teurastamo is a vibrant public space along Työpajankatu street near Kalasatama. Originally a slaughterhouse designed by architect Bertel Liljequist in 1933, it closed in 1992 and later transformed into a hub for restaurants, bars, and urban culture. Officially opened to the public in 2012, Teurastamo now hosts a variety of businesses including distilleries, restaurants like Kellohalli and Palema, and notable spots such as Roslund known for its burgers. The area also features a communal yard with barbecue facilities, a bicycle repair station, urban farming plots, and a rentable sauna. Teurastamo regularly hosts free events such as picnics and markets throughout the year.
Teurastamo’s very own jazz festival offered a multidimensional musical experience for all rhythm music lovers. This free, family-friendly event featured an incredible lineup of talented performers who took over the courtyard stages with their mesmerizing tunes.
Matti Nives, known for his work with the We Jazz DJ collective and Radio Helsinki’s “Jazz kiinnostaa” program, set the perfect tone with a powerful selection from his extensive vinyl collection.
The rhythmic children’s music group, Megasakki, captivated the younger audience with lively performances from their debut album “Siili beatboksaa,” released in February 2022.
The Wilfried Wilde Quartet, featuring compositions by Wilfried Wilde and Adele Sauros, brought a mix of French charm and Swiss precision to the stage, with Wilde’s guitar work leading the way.
Finnish jazz legend Olli Ahvenlahti graced us with a rare live performance based on his beloved acoustic album “Thinking, Whistling” (We Jazz Records, 2017). This special concert was a masterclass in modern jazz, delivered by Olli and his specially assembled band.
To cap off the day, Ville Luukkonen led an engaging jazz jam session, leaving the audience in awe and bringing the festival to a dynamic close.
