My Birthday Weekend was an opportunity for a solo bikepacking adventure in Wales.

    Browsing maps and inspired by @KeepSmilingAdventures videos, I created the Wales Divide route and caught the train from Birmingham to Prestatyn to start my adventure at the lighthouse at Talacre beach.

    My aim, to ride from the northern most point of Mainland Wales to the Southern most point. In between there will be a parkrun in Ruthin, and some big climbs to ride over!

    Will I make it in time to catch my train home on Monday?

    Hope you enjoy the film of my adventure, please like and subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/alittleadventuretime?sub_confirmation=1

    About Ian, Iona and Family
    ===============================
    Each week on this channel Ian (Dad) and Iona share our little adventure experiences, often joined by Ewan (Iona’s older brother) and Ruth (Mum) too.

    Our weekends often start with parkrun. Iona is on a non-repeat parkrun tourism streak having now visited over 100 different places since she started parkrunning. But we don’t just do parkun and dash home, we love exploring the area and often use bikes and trains for our travels to keep our carbon footprint low and because it adds to the adventure too. When school holidays arrive, longer adventures are possible with Ewan and Iona both being keen cycle tourists and mountain climbers!

    So if you like heading outdoors and your idea of a perfect weekend includes parkrun, climbing a mountain or exploring new places on two wheels then we would love to have you join us on our adventures.

    We’d love it if you subscribed so you can follow our journey and hopefully be inspired to get out the door and have your own little adventures. Do like and leave comments on our videos too on questions you might have or ideas for places to explore or adventures to go on.

    my birthday weekend an opportunity for a solo Adventure browsing Maps inspired by keep smiling Adventures videos I created the Wales divide route and today have caught the train from Birmingham to catin to start my adventure at the Lighthouse here at tacka beach my aim is to ride from the northermost quto mland whals to the southernmost point in between there’ll be a park run in ret and some big climbs to ride over will I make it in time to catch my train home on Monday [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] traveled through pretin and now on an old raway line heading out of pretin did stop off and found a fish and chip shop so I’m hoping on the way out I can find somewhere nice to stop and enjoy my fish and chips can’t come to the seaside and not get some fish and chips can you perfect Friday night tea time [Music] [Music] well enjoying my fish and chips having cycled a little way out of pisatin along this old rway line and I have a fabulous view of the Sea and the mountains in the distance as well you couldn’t ask for a better restaurant view than this to enjoy your fish and chips too perfect way to start the weekend’s Adventure I do however also seem to have attracted some very interested onlookers in the form of seagull so I think are desperately hoping that I might leave them some fish and chips Fred I don’t think they’re going to be that lucky [Music] [Music] enjoying one of those perfect evenings for cycling though it is a little bit Breezy but the views are spectacular over the mountains the sun is just gently setting long quiet country lanes as a car comes past and just enjoying the wsh countryside however you do pay for the price of wsh Countryside with some Walsh Hills this has definitely been an undulating route so [Music] [Music] far well the first day of Adventure is complete managed to find a bit of Woodland just outside of riin with a lovely Little Shelter that obviously some young people have made in the Woodland which is a perfect spot for me to bivy for the night so I’m just not going to bother pitching the tent just going to use my bivy bag and be out in the fresh air on a beautiful evening and time to enjoy a kind of gin and tonic that Ruth bought me as I sit and watch the sheep in the field next to me see you in the morning good morning the beautiful sunny weather of yesterday has disappeared during the night to the pitter patter of raindrops this morning fortunately my bivy has kept me nice and warm and toasty and dry overnight that’s quite Pleasant just sitting here listening to the rain falling but it’s time to get up time to get cycling maybe time to do a park run first back ring which I passed through last night just a little way back down the road and get some breakfast there hopefully as well but first time to pack up my V pag get back on that bike and get on the road [Music] well just cuz I’m on a cycle tour doesn’t mean I can’t do a park R I’ve stopped off at the park one I have done before so I’m not depriving I owner of a new park run last time I was here it was for Deborah cassar’s 100th park run so it was quite special last time I was here today just a chance to get a bit of a park R in before cycling to midw sorry enjoy and I’m off a brief interview from cycling to do a bit of running 5K in Rin the park run here last time I was here was the de casar H different park run it’s nice to be back well done thank you Marshall one of the things that’s special about this park run is the beautiful views you get of the mountains as you’re running it fabulous now I’m not going to record the whole park r because I have done it before as I said so if you want to check it out have a look at that video which is the one I did with dears hundreds we just completed the second turn around point and you’re back to do it all over again a couple of times well just coming up to start my third and final lap and the fastest runner has just come past me laughing me he’s on for a sub 18 minute park run bit quicker than I’m doing it and we’re running into the Finish now three laps completed R park run done just 60 or 70 miles to cycle next guys thank you done done just enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the cafe after park run probably wasted a bit too much time chatting with other Park Runners here but it was lovely to catch up and have a bit of a chat and now back on the bike and start the route proper again hoping to get at least 60 miles done today and get somewhere south of um new town but we’ll see how it [Music] goes back on the route proper now climbing out of riin just passed by where I camped last night through the Woodland there and definitely a good long climb to get out of the Rin Valley fortunately the rain has stopped so not getting ped with rain at the moment either well I’ve had my first commo challenge the route wants me to go here I think those big wooden gates are saying no you don’t so I think we’ll be carrying on along the main road and hoping for a little left turn that would allow me to rejoin the route that I have planned cuz I don’t think I’m going through there reached the first Hill that’s defeated me having to push for a little bit up this steep bit of Hill my legs weren’t quite ready to ride up [Music] it well a load of climbing there that was definitely beyond my legus pedal up with the loaded Touring bike but some beautiful little quiet country lanes surrounded by Woodland and then View new over the hills it’s worth [Music] it just stopped off in the little village of hillo changed the GoPro batteries grabbed some flapjack to eat and just have a breather for a moment before well I’m sure we’ll be more Hills I’ll slightly change the route that I was going to do to stick to the B Road rather than the little country lanes for a section just fancied some more easy rolling rather up down up down that the Country Lane seem to entail and it’s quite nice it’s come through this lovely little [Music] village well just cutting back off the be 4391 cuz I’m not dropping right down into Balor but cutting up and over the hill I think I’m about to find another steep bit of climbing so might be a bit of walking about to come up but the views I’ve been enjoying as i’ been cycling along here have been fabulous over the mountains really been enjoying that not so sure I’m enjoying the burning of my legs quite as much but it’s good to be out I’m giving them a good work [Music] out just stopping for a moment came across this lovely Little River and thought I’d stop and enjoy a bit more Flapjack and refuel a bit before what I know I’ve got coming up is quite a long climb with some steep bits that I will probably be walking up so enjoying the calm waters before the [Music] storm this climb is certainly a long one bit of a reprieve at the moment little flat section between the climbs all around me I can see mountains which in my mind means at some point I’ve got to get to go up and over and out of these mountains hence all the climbing but wow it’s beautiful as [Music] well definitely feeling the Wilds of Wales now and I can see the road snaking ahead of me and some cyclists coming the other way who’ve already faced the climb the other side the first Cy nees past me I realized I got an ebike which right now seems a very good idea wow that’s looking a tough climb up ahead [Music] just taking a little breather on my way up the hill Co it’s tough but it is so far ridable so I think it’s got a last need little kick towards the end so we’ll see whether we make it all the way well over 1,000 ft above sea level here so really are doing quite a bit of climbing I love this wild landscape here and bit below I could smile the Bracken which to me is a smile of wildness Lov just to add to the challenges with cycling up here we’re cycling to a headwind and we’re in the cloud as well nothing makes it easy well I’ve made it to the top I almost pedal all the way up but the last little kicker just before the Finish ground me to a halt so the last couple of hundred yards it was push my bike The View up here up in the cloud is amazing just surrounded by mountains and sheep basically and according to my Garmin I’m at over 1,600 ft above sea level so pretty high up now we start The Descent let’s hope the brakes are feeling good an amazing descent through a beautiful Forest trying to make sure the brakes keep me under control paying the benefit of all that uphill climbing wow what did descent had to hang on to those breake leavs a bit on the way down there at times but we’ve arrived at Lake Bernie and the adrenaline’s kicking in you can see people’s faces as well when I was driving they were driving up or down there and as I was cycling up it you think you could tell they were thinking this guy is nuts as I got to the top there were two guys making their way up on bikes as well e- mountain bikes they were well impressed that I’d managed to get up there without the assistance of a motor fabulous could do without that another big clown like that though for a little while for my legs to recover cruising Along by Lake burnway at the moment can just about see it through the trees at the side of me but it’s a nice Flat Road here which is a nice change after all the climbing recently so just enjoying gently pedling along for a bit the reservoir is coming a bit more into view now and I can see the dam up ahead and just past the tower which I’m sure has some significance in terms of controlling the water it’s on here I can’t remember what it [Music] [Music] is well it may not have been on route but I had to make the crossing across the dam and appreciate the view down the reservoir back up we go and start carrying on our route [Music] these Hills do not relent another one that I just had to walk up in fact I think I was almost crawling up it was so hard to push your bike the bike was desperate to try and roll back down the hill again it really does make this hard work the distance I’ve covered today nowhere near what I expected to have done by now just cuz of these [Music] Hills theyve put the bunting out for me [Music] here just spotted a new Stone Circle I don’t think it’s quite as old as [Applause] Stonehenge it’s so still out here here now all you hear is the birds chirping the Sheep barring and the bit of Breeze in the trees beautiful and my puffing and panting as I’m coming up the hills [Music] well Kut has taken me on one of the more interesting routes that it sometimes takes you on this is supposed to be cycle touring a ball this I’m not going for bike packing cycle touring not very ridable I don’t think we’ll see how we get [Music] on and we’re out onto a gravel track through the deci side this is a bit easier we’re back on tarmac come across some log cabins and a golf course in the middle of nowhere as far as I’m aware [Music] [Music] we made it to the top of that Hill bit of walking bit of cycling 16% 16% down as well we I’ve just arrived into New Town made it this is my target for the day minimum course it’s been a tougher day than I expected but I’m quite glad to get here and now just got to find somewhere to refu my drink bottles maybe find something to eat and even better if I can find somewhere to Camp not while camping but somewhere with a shower be even better think I might have spotted somewhere so we shall see cycling through New Town I’ve just found the place I spotted that can possibly host me tonight and they still open and they still got some space so camp tonight and hopefully maybe even a shower and it’s a pub so maybe a nice cold pint as well first through New Town they’ got the Bunty out for me again and I think I’ve got a bit of a hill to climb to get out of new town to get to where I’m going to be camping yep there’s a hill but it doesn’t matter when you know there’s going to be somewhere at the end of it and here it is an rasis in a desert it feel like right now glad to get here quite liking this sign just here grumpy old man ahead is that for me am I a grumpy old man I’m not feeling grumpy right now to see this right let’s go and check in [Music] tent pitched and ready for the bed for tonight fabulous time at the dolly in just outside of New Town highly recommended if you’re looking for somewhere to Camp really friendly team great food I had a fabulous Steak and Ale pie and chips just what was needed and a couple of nice cold pints of cider perfect way to end the day great spot really good value camping I think they’ve only charged me a fiver and just lovely little spots a really friendly team here had a lovely chat with some of the locals and yeah just great one thing to note they only take cash or they can do bank transfer which is what I had to do it because I didn’t have any cash with me and I wasn’t going to cycle back down into new town right good night see you in the morning for day three of the adventure good morning and happy birthday to me I have brought myself up a couple of birthday cards to going to open in a moment while I enjoy my morning coffee and Quon that I have with me but sun is shining and it’s not raining so good start to the day not so good news is we’ve got a big Steep Hill to climb to start with but time to enjoy my coffee which I’ve just brewed up and opened my card for my birthday thought I would bring as I’m on a cycle tour riding some long distances I thought i’ bring the car that’s traveled to furthest from my sister in Tanzania and there’s my card happy birthday to my favorite brother though I will point out I am her only brother so she can safely say that happy birthday to me bike is locked and loaded p is all on ready to go time to go time to start riding up those Hills [Music] again not done a mile yet but we’re already pushing the bike partly cuz re haven’t warmed up at all you literally straight into the climb so and partly just cuz it’s steep fortunately the steep steep section didn’t last too long so I’m back on the bike trundling my way slowly up the hill as the views open up around me of the hills around about and still we climb over 2 and 1 half miles of climbing since we left the campsite definitely making the legs burn to start the day that’s the top reached and just look at this [Music] view just taking a moment for a breather having reached the top of the hill providing spectator sport I think for the cows and sheep here the Sheep at this time of year always amused me slightly the sheep have been sha the Lambs haven’t so actually the Lambs are now bigger than their moms but still going in for a suckle of milk quite funny oh the Vista spread out around me is just fabulous absolutely loving [Music] this well well after a beautiful fairly quick but steady descent on the road after my first long climb we’re back pushing the bike up a hill again turned off the a road just there and a short sharp climb to kick the legs off which my leg said no thanks we’re walking but I think it’s only a little one [Music] well a little undulating back road for a while and now we’re back on the a44 so a bit of a-road cycling again now which tends to be a bit easier on the legs but not quite as fun and pleasant perhaps as the back road combination of two works well today my legs are definitely a little weary one of the things I was perhaps expecting when cycling through Wales a bit bit more open landscape um sort of Ms or hills around me what I’ve actually ended up cycling on a lot of is little country lanes with high Hedges and high banks on either side which sometimes means un fortunately you don’t get to see much of the view the lane I’m cycling up at the moment is a case in point I’m sure there are beautiful mountains round about me all I can see is the Hedge lovely Lanes slightly challenging when you have a tractor comeing towards you you need to dive for cover there is barely space for them to squeeze past you but more like almost but like I get back home in South War show and into the cotw some of these narrow Lanes with high Hedges and also that you find down in Devon and Cornwall not quite what I expecting Wells but you know beautiful nonetheless well we have broken out of some of those High Banks and hedges and all a sudden the mountain views are there round about me [Music] beautiful well we have come out into some more open warland after to my earlier comments it says if it heard me and is delivered on promise so I’m now up on the MS in the mountains no high Hedges can enjoy the views if the cows were enjoying the view of me climbing up the hill as well looking at me as if to say You must be crazy sorry Dad joke all I can hear is the core and the chir of birds sheep barring the occasional cow mooing and in one case a ball I think was get slightly upset that I was anywhere nearby but other than that nothing peace [Music] I have seen a lot of the ncn routes as I’ve been cycling around up here on these little country lanes now Sr thing is for their roots to be part of the national psych Network it has to be ridable by a competent 12-year-old because they shouldn’t be too busy with traffic and I can assure you these roads are not too busy with traffic but the 12-year-old would have to have legs of Steel to R ride some of these Hills I was trundling along and it’s getting well past 3:00 and I thinking I could really do with a spot of lunch I thought it was going to be resulting to just my Flapjack that I’ve got in my paa for my lunch and then spotted erwood Cafe which is an Old Railway Station all that’s left of it is the railway station and an old train sitting outside of it and as well there’s a carriage that you can sit in and have your lunch if you wanted to but on a day like had to sit outside absolutely lovely little spot and had a delicious cheese breakfast s toasted sandwich that was just hit the spot along with a beautiful piece of sticky St toffee and Biscoff cake Perfection sticky toffee and Biscoff combined you couldn’t ask for more hopefully that’s refueled the batteries for the next 20 miles of cycling not far to go now still a bit of undulation though doing the last little section of it though I think so not going to be easy cycling along the valley at the moment so it’s nice and flat just following the river and I’m guessing actually based on where the station was and where the line of this road is we may well be cycling along the Old Railway line even though it is actually now Road not just a trail how’s that sort of feel about it nice easy gradient and the way the the banks fall away and everything but [Music] lovely just arriving into Breen National Park Breen beacons remember climbing penan when I was much much younger and I’ve got a few Hills to climb on the bike instead [Music] just passing by clangor Lake on my right at the moment just about 5 miles away now from my final destination for tonight surrounded by mountains but fortunately I don’t think I’ve got many more to climb in the rest of the journey but there now and there’s a kite hovering above me now oh beautiful [Music] a very narrow bridge to finish my [Music] ride good morning fourth and final day of my tour and I’m starting off with some very easy cycling along the canal tow path it’s lovely and flat but um lovely last night stay with with friends catch up good leather and today I think we got one significant Hill to do uh up and over um sort of the Breen area I guess but I think it’s along an old rway line so actually the gradient won’t be too horrendous for most of it I’m led to believe so hoping that’s the case but I’m going to make the most of this Canal bit to warm my legs up nicely and get them going for the day certainly an easier start than yesterday when we were straight into the climbing so we’re off the canal toe path now at a little swing bridge and now heading towards the reservoir where we’re going to cross over a dam I believe [Music] crossing over my second Reservoir Dam of the trip talibon Reservoir and then I’m joining the Taff Trail um for the next part of my route which is the old R line which I’ve been assured by my friend last night is a nice steady incline as behests a rway line so I’m hoping they weren’t fiing sure they weren’t but what a beautiful view down the reservoir this morning [Music] so riding along the TA Trail now which is a steady upward incline with the reservoir on the side of me on my right not that I can see much of it at the moment between the trees and it does gradually go upwards enough to make you puff and pant but not enough to make my legs stop all together so all good [Music] I finished the climb up the Taft Trail gravel path all the way up into the from the valley below now surrounded by mountains and up on the hillside above me I can see some sheep being moved and I hear the call of the shepherd and the whistle to the dogs working the Sheep I joined the road for a bit now bit smoother the tough travel is great but definitely more suited to slightly fatter TP tires and softer tires than I’m riding on a Touring bike perhaps and definitely if you’re descending down there you’d probably value some front suspension I can feel the pins and needles in my hands and that’s with the steady riding uphill upit so definitely if you wanted to let let go and go for it down there you definitely want something with some decent tires and some front fork suspension at the least to make the most of it but great way to get up here definitely better than the roads cuz it is just a steady grind Ascent without ever getting too Steep and lovely to be traffic free the entire way I haven’t seen a soul for the whole journey 7 and 1 half miles since leaving the canal tow path and it’s been a steady climb ever since so be glad to do some descending put a an extra layer on cuz it’s quite chilly up here so on The Descent I’m definely going to feel the chill and I can see the road snaking away down below me now so let’s get descending [Music] wow that was a lovely bit of descent and I just passed owl’s Grove I must come and visit that sometime with her love of [Music] [Applause] [Music] owls we back off the road back onto the Taff Trail but it’s now a Tarmac surface and it’s downhill not uphill so we going to enjoy this 20 mes to on pleas this is just fantastic a beautiful steady descent tarma surface traffic free but I hav to see people again over 10 m cycle this morning we fact over 15 miles this morning didn’t really see anybody all of a sudden we’re starting to get back into habitation there’s people out walking their dogs other people out on their bikes they’re suffering going up the other way and yeah but absolutely fabulous Trail definitely one to come back perhaps and do with the children sometimes it’s really family friendly though the other side is definitely a bit more [Applause] challenging I was warned as I came into M tidf that I’d find some sort of changes ins sign of the route they’ve actually it looks like they’ve now finished the new bridge over the new road that they’re building or jeweling the roads that’s there um so that was a lot easier perhaps than I was expecting to get around that little bit and into M did well morning over an amazing Viaduct just there fabulous views from that and carrying on down the TA Trail loving this traffic fre [Music] cycling just passing by the old Iron Works in rville and all that’s left really of it incredible Heritage in that area impressive construction though wow after so many days of cycling through valleys country lanes little Villages and all the rest of it it’s quite weird to be back in a urban environment and just being surrounded by buildings cars and all the rest of it that goes through that still on traffic free cycling heading to w p Prest still we’re now on the travic trail rather than the Taff Trail I’m heading down the valley so the valley is down there below me we’re steadily dropping every now and then you get a little lump have to get the legs working a bit harder but most of the time it’s pretty easygoing [Music] cycling 7 miles to Pont P now just past male train station [Music] back on the tap Trail and no longer on tarmak either back on the more grally Stony surface so bit more vibration to deal with but a lovely Trail nonetheless carrying on down the valley with the river down below me cycling right by the side of the river now so dropped all the way down to the river level the hills up the other side of it in the park in Pont P last time I was here it was to do park run for the cowest Meetup so it’s nice to be back bit easier cycling through it than it was running through it I’m having slight challenges however the nationalized dead fod here and the route is closed off so trying to navigate my way through the park slight change of plan for the last part of my ride not quite going to make it to the southernmost point of Wales cuz I’ve just run out of time got to the F locked in the park in Pont P um first of all got sort of push war Direction by the people who are working on setting up for the ice dead pod and then got about half a mile along the Route and there was a gate across the path completely locked um no way around it no way over it nothing so back to the office in the park found a man with a van with the keys um who then had to come all the way to the gate unlock it for me and so I could continue on my way on the TA Trail but by that point any margin I got left which would have allowed me to get to where I was hoping to get to and then get to Cardiff to catch my train had disappeared and looking at the following trains it would be a complete pain trying to c a different train so decided to be sensible for once in my life and just head direct to Cardiff on the TA Trail which is a very nice way to do it so enjoying it but just not quite achieve what I was hoping for well it’s been interesting so far obviously because I’m no longer following my actual route I’m just relying on the signage for the Taff Trail got to point just back there and the sign for Cardiff wasn’t there so I started heading towards capil which I then thought no I’m not sure this is right so had a quick look at my Google Maps and sure enough heading in the wrong direction the other interesting thing is the distances bounced up and down like a yo-yo one saying 10 miles next minute 8 Miles and so on and so forth so who knows how far it is to Cardiff the good thing having made my decision that I couldn’t get through I was getting a bit stressed about whether I was going to make it and oh really wanting to but then you know what do you do and wanting to see my family and get back to them as well I know that they would have been disappointed if I hadn’t got back to be able to see them before they go to bed tonight so once having made the decision relaxed now I can make it to card if easily on this route and just nice to enjoy the last bit of a ride in a more relaxed fashion decisions you make while you’re touring sometimes you just have to be sensible [Music] [Music] seeing all the blue stickers marking Route 8 of the national cycle Network that I’m cycling along otherwise known as the TA Trail in this part um reminds me of the book I’ve been reading Laura of Laura Lakers Pooles and Pavements when she talks about the army of volunteers going out each year to make sure the stickers are in place for finding your way but also the fairly hit and miss nature of their signage and sometimes you could desperately do with one and there’s just nothing around and others times they’re everywhere but mostly I’m managing to find my way without the age of my Garin directing me on my path just past one of the cycle networks of of metal Millennium signs as well CU one of the things they wanted to do is not just create spaces for us to cycle and walk along but also to have them as places of enjoyment and pleasure and they thought sculpture and art along the Route was a key part of that so hence why you see so much of that along the sran Route well without even realizing it I’ve arrived into the suburbs of Cardiff it’s so green and leafy by the actual cycle route you don’t even realize but I had begun to wonder cuz i’ seen so many more cyclist Runners people out walking just enjoying the sustr route so I had guessed I must be getting into urban area but absolutely beautiful way of heading into the city you would never know look at this spread out here just peeking over the trees you can see the odd tall building and so on that obviously marks the fact we are into the city quite glad in some ways that I’ve come this way rather than my original plan route to have experienced the whole of the TA Trail definitely one I’ll be back and doing I think with the children if I can work out way of perhaps not making them do too much uphill and as much of the downhill as [Music] possible this is my first ever time in Cardiff itself so quite enjoying cycling through not that I’m see much of the city but I’m seen lots of lovely Green Space that is alongside the river and so on and some great cycle INF structure as well so loving it so far definite thumbs up for [Music] me well I’ve made it to my revised Final Destination Cardiff Bay as a Martin Joseph fan had to be here I’ve made it from one coast of Wales the North Coast to the South Coast maybe not quite to the most suly point but I still feel I’ve achieved My overall ambition hope you’ve enjoyed today’s little Adventure well a few days adventure maybe slightly bigger than a little Adventure if you’ve enjoyed this adventure then do make sure you hit subscribe because coming up I’ve got a cycle touring adventure with Yan in the Netherlands and a little cycle touring adventure with owner as well over the summer holidays and do check out this video of my last year’s cycle tour with Yan as well
