NASA test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched aboard Boeing’s new Starliner capsule early last month, the first people to ride it. Helium leaks and thruster failures almost derailed their arrival at the International Space Station, and have kept them there much longer than planned. Now the earliest they could return may be the end of July, officials said.

glad you’re with us I’m Lisa Bell and I’m Ginger Gat and this is News 6 at 4:30 getting results We Begin though with the weight in space it is now been 35 days since a new spaceship took flight with its first astronauts and still NASA doesn’t know when it’s bringing those astronauts home the Boeing Starliner crew flight test was supposed to last a week or two as tests are still being done to ensure the spacecraft is safe to come home new six’s James Baro gives us an update from the astronauts aboard the International Space so two weeks ago in the last update we got from NASA and Boeing about Starliner and Butch Wilmore and sunny Williams one of the reporters on the call asked if we could talk to Butch and sunny directly now what was initially supposed to be about a twoe mission to the station has turned out to be longer than a month for Butch and sunny but I know as professional as these two are and as focused as they are on what they control I don’t think they’re too worried I think they have all the trust in the world maybe better said in the universe and those who are helping to fix the issues on Starliner and get them ready for undocking an eventual splash down there have been multiple issues with every spacecraft that’s ever been designed and that’s the nature of what we do you know that Mantra you’ve heard failure is not an option that’s why we are staying here now I have a a real good feeling in my heart that uh the spacecraft will will bring us home no problem I’m not complaining Butch isn’t complaining that we’re here for a couple extra weeks best case scenario NASA says they might come home at the end of the month it sounds like it really depends on the testing that will happen related to Starliner bad thrusters and its helium wakes and if you’re wondering why don’t Butch and sunny just ride a SpaceX capsule home that seems out of the question right now the prime option today is to return Butch and sunny on Starliner there’s really been no discussion what sending another Dragon to rescue the Starliner crew NASA mentioned the space station has two docking ports for Starliner or Dragon therefore they have to free one up by the time the next SpaceX crew is set to fly there crew nine could launch in August in Cape canaval bravard County I’m James sparvero getting results News 6 I mean you have to know that they have Provisions for those astronauts to stay there and and be safe and better safe than sorry right absolutely but for us here on Earth it is a little concerning when you think that they’re going to be back in just a few days and it’s a lot longer than that well for all things space be sure to download the space coast and Beyond newsletter James latest letter touched on the four private astronauts who could launch support of at least one child psychiatrist morning anchor Bridget Ellison talked with Dr Vivian chco this morning during breakfast with Bridget the medical director at mindful Behavioral Healthcare says the unique way the film presents emotions offers opportunities to unpack new feelings ings that children might be experiencing but cannot explain it can also benefit adults watching the film by reminding them to look for the emotional roots of their children’s behaviors rather than skipping straight to reprimand the idea that they may actually uh ped or they may get angry you know we as parents will will frown or or reprimand our child like how could you say such a thing or whatnot rather than than trying to understand what that feeling is about and actually be able to to to channel that feeling in in a productive manner so it’s it’s really how you how you work around the feeling that’s important more so than the specific feeling itself the doctor says a variety of emotions is natural and a part of healthy development but if parents and children are having trouble behavioral therapy can help well the summer heat tightens its grip on Central Florida and for the most vulnerable in our communities are those without air conditioning it can be a very dangerous Time new sixes Mark Layman brings us Orange County’s plans to keep the community safe it’s been very hot how are you coping with all of this it’s extremely hot invariably hot for the most vulnerable in the community The Soaring temps are a serious concern there’s a lot of people out here that’s suffering and with the dangers that come with excessive heat Orange County is rolling out a plan to to keep people safe from the summer elements public safety director Danny Banks says when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory like today the County’s libraries rec centers and community centers will open to anyone wanting to cool off in the AC combined the dozens of buildings can accommodate more than 1,600 people that total number of 1,600 capacity I gave you that’s without any impacting any of our ongoing summer Services right now now one big component to all of this is getting to those relief centers and that’s where Lynx comes in the county says when there’s a heat advisory the buses will give free rides to the cooling locations along regular routes the county says things are taking a step further when the heat index tops 113° that’s when staff will hand out water to homeless people and others in need the Heat sucks man I mean you know these people are out here man you know bring some more water m i mean hydrate them meanwhile fire rescue teams have also visited more than 200 assist Ed in senior living facilities to check on air conditioning giving them a point of contact if there are problems while dealing with the ongoing heat in Orange County Mark Layman getting results news six that heat is rough out there we do have heat advisories in place for all of our counties shaded in Orange those are up until 6:00 and right now heat index readings areawide are really toasty out there in the low 100s in some spots feeling like 102 in Orlando and it feels like 100 in Melbourne our rain chances go up for tomorrow we’ll talk more about that and the timing of those showers coming up plus it’s a restaurant that offers something different yet affordable coming up how a trip to Amsterdam turned into a passion project now known as the fry shop if you’re watching new 6 at 4:30 getting results we’ll be right back this portion of the news is sponsored by your central Florida Honda [Music] dealers e e e e e e time now is 4:45 I’m meteorologist Julie Bron with are tracking some showers for you on the radar mostly some areas of light rain but you’ll notice some heavier rain out over the Atlantic and that’s going to continue affecting us especially as we head into the day tomorrow but right now as we go in a little bit closer and loop the radar for you over the last hour you can see a little pocket of heavier rain has popped up in Oola County tracking toward bravard County that’s moving to the southeast around 15 to 20 miles per hour and it is producing some lightning but nothing severe Out There Our launch Credit Union camera out at Port Canaveral showing skies are pretty great with all that rain that we’re seeing right now you’re seeing some rain cooled air it is 77° with winds coming in from the West at 11 m per hour now all of our counties shaded in Orange do remain under a heat advisory that is up until 6:00 and that is because it feels like the triple digits in a lot of spots now right now where we haven’t seen the rain it’s in the low 90s 91 in Orlando and 92 in CMI factoring the relative humidity it feels like the low 100s we’re watching a broad area of low pressure off our Coast the National Hurricane Center giving that about a 10% chance of further development that bumps our rain chances up to 70% regardless of it develops further or not so for tonight we’ll keep some scattered showers in the picture overnight partly cloudy skies and then tomorrow we will start to see rain early in the day by around 7:00 then that increases for us as we head into the afternoon hours with that 70% chance of rain by 4:00 7-day forecast showing 92 for our high tomorrow with that high chance of rain and then back in the mid90s with overnight lows in the upper 70s actually thank you this next story is going to make you really hungry a trip to Amsterdam sparked an idea for a local restaurant owner he took an on thee-o snack of french fries and created a fast food window experience seems like a win-win right so it recently opened in Winter Park and chief meteorologist Candace Campos talked with the owner of the fry shop about his passion project that was decades in the making [Music] today’s guest has opened a first ofit kind restaurant near Winter Park just a brand new we’re talking like two weeks old so it’s really exciting that um we’re so happy to be joined today with Wilson Santos the owner of fry shop a shop that was inspired by trips to Amsterdam welcome thank you thank you for having me okay so when I asked you you were inspired you’re like I’m not from Amsterdam I’m I was born and raised in the Bronx right so give us a little background on how the fry shop came to be um I mean this is this concept is like decades in the making to be honest um I went to Amsterdam the first trip was in 1994 I was doing a study abroad program in England and on the weekends I would try to take a trip around Europe and I just took a trip with some friends that I had met in England went to Amsterdam and I saw these fries like what is this thing I see all these people walking up and down the street holding these cones and just eating these fries and I’m like what is that then you see these little fry shops all around like snack snack shops almost like a walk up just window and then there lines of people just lining up to get these fries I said I got to try this stuff you know so we tried it fell in love they have all these different sauces and I started you know buying one walking around being a tourist saw another shop bought another one tried a different sauce and that was it I would eat like two or three of them a day and I I found it fascinating and I just thought why don’t we have this in the US this is 1994 and then eventually in the US a couple of shops they open up yeah and I really feel like it’s not just the art of how good your French fries are it’s also the art of the sauces from what it looks like here on on the table it really is all about the sauces you know fries are fries but when you add the sauce and the toppings that’s what really makes it that’s what and the beauty about it is you can like I said I was walking around having two or three of them a day because there were plenty of fres shops around the streets we don’t have a lot of fres shops in Orlando I think we’re probably the first and only one but every day a guest comes or customer comes they can try a different sauce is the different experience every time so you can try crispy fries with one sauce or skin- on fries with a different sauce so it’s a different experience you’re still eating fries but your experience is is different how many different varieties do you have so we have original sauces I have uh 10 and then since we opened I discovered something that I wasn’t planning on but people want just regular ranch or regular blue cheese or just buffalo sauce or just barbecue sauce Americans you know it doesn’t take much so we I added those as options as well and uh but the European concept is more of a mayo and and so the reason I call mine a Dutch style corn fries and not Dutch corn fries because we’re not officially Dutch we do have some Dutch sauces you look very Dutch good me the wooden shoes for those listening to the podcast he does not look Dutch we um we have people like Dutch people coming and wondering are we really Dutch you know we doing what what they’re used to are we serving what they’re used to and I say we do have some options but we also have we’re in the US so we have other options that cater towards this Market which would be like the Chipotle garlic cilantro you don’t get that those flavors out in in in Europe you know so CU we’re closer to home and I I would feel like here especially in Central Florida it’s a great place to do a fire shelf like this because you get all these different flavors from what central Florida’s become such a Melting Pot you get the cilantro and lime you get more of a Hispanic twist you get more of the barbecue style Southern flare so I mean do you feel like that’s like that’s one of the reasons why this this concept could work here yeah I think so I think it’s um it appeals to a much broader Market if it was just a Dutch flavor Americans aren’t used to having peanut butter on peanut sauce on fries you know and thing it is a big thing shockingly in in Amsterdam in the Netherlands so it’s peanut sauce they have this this fries called War the Amsterdam War fries and War fries are peanut sauce with mayonnaise and white onions on top now that’s they call it that I think a clash of flavors it’s a war going on in your mouth with all these different flavors Americans aren’t used to that so if I got if I just did European style uh sauces we still do well I think you know but we also have a broader Market that in America that needs to we need to appeal to and that’s the Mexican flavors we have a cansas City Barbecue Mayo which happened by accident you know one day I was grilling burgers in my house and I realized I don’t have any ketchup I’m like what am I going to do you know you need some something so I took some K City Barbecue some mayonnaise put it together put some spices in it and we created a sauce just like that everybody that was at the barbecue loved it I’m like I’m going to put that on the menu nice you know so there’s that and then we have the curry is is used a lot in Europe um the peanut sauce is used in Europe a lot sambal Ole you know that one is also used that’s a spicy really nice spice sauce but yeah we have a market here that we need to cater to as well and and I figured I’d try to hit a broader Market rather than a more narrow Market where is now where is the fry shop now located so we’re at 489 North samron Boulevard and it’s actually Winter Park but it’s Park it’s very close to Castleberry so we’ve got Castleberry a few minutes up the road and then Orlando it’s on the board of East Orlando as well um we’re a few blocks up from full sale University just a light up on from University bulevard to Aloma so we’re right on the corner of samron Boulevard in Aloma really um high traffic intersection for us so yeah we’ve been blessed to start there and near and near the near the school too which is also a winwin too yeah we’ve got over 20,000 students at full sale um we’ve got of course a lot of faculty and staff that work there um in the plaza behind us we have AA beauty school which is a blessing there have been a bread and butter to get started you know we we’ve been blessed to have those students come ala High School is right behind us as well unfortunately high school students don’t have a lot of money so you they’re not a big customer of ours but but we’re employing them we’ve got two kids from Ala High School got another kid from Winter Park High schooles but this is a perfect like after school like you know a couple of a couple of kids could you know put their money together and share a little fry or they and they have two or three of them and they you know somebody bu yeah they do the kids have been but the beauty school has been a big blessing for us right behind this all right can we try these yeah are these real they don’t look real they’re real it smells real yeah so what’s what’s this little these little C so so this is our regular size we we sell these for 5.95 we have a much bigger one it’s huge I don’t know how people can um bigger than this bigger than that yeah it’s bigger than that 7 that one $7.95 so it’s still affordable you know very affordable we make them very affordable cuz we we target the students a lot we have a lot of students in our area have you see have 15 minutes down the road full sale down the road that one is uh really good that’s the um cilantro garlic cilantro our most popular sauce okay this is our boom boom Ranch and you’ve got them scallions on that that’s almost popular sauce we go through jars of this stuff I can swim in that sauce yeah I spoon it yeah it’s good oh that’s good yeah cool and the fries are crispy they hold their flavor yeah thank you the boom boom has a little bit of a kick not bad though yeah so we we use mayonnaise a lot of our sauces are Mayo based so it kind of Tams it down um so the the spice on it just gets brought down a little bit with the creat a nice little bance those go well together too cuz like that little bit of heat here the lime kind of sinks with that really nicely that’s that’s really good do some people kind of order a couple and they like I have yours and you have mine you kind of switch up a little bit yes that’s that’s and that’s what we we look for you know we look for people to try and every day like we get the vaita students they’ll come two three days in a row and every day they’ll try a different sauce yeah well Wilson thank you so much so when if people wanted to look out for you you already told us your address but um social yeah we’re on social media so we I I started this the Instagram page last year so I’ve been teasing it for a long time before I had a location so things happened for a reason you know I ended up um I couldn’t get funding for it and I didn’t have the money I I’m a risk taker I sold my house to buy to get to invest into this oh my God I had a beautiful home we got a beautiful fries shop now and I’m renting a house now you know right right across the street from the fres shop and I was like you I’m going to risk it all I sold my house and at great rate like that post pandemic rate before they went up but I I took a I took a chance and I just I I threw all into this because I eventually I’ll buy another house yeah yeah but I needed to do this uh I needed to do this now well now I want some fries and some ranch I mean I’m not going to share mine but I am going to want to try yours maybe maybe I don’t know about fries dipped in peanut butter though no but the ranch sounded good really hungry right now all right anchor Matt Austin is in studio with what’s ahead on new6 you know you’re kind of country if you dip your fries in ranch and that’s what I whatever we told you about the continuous complaints from Neighbors about a local bar getting too loud it’s been going on for years now near DeLand next at five we talked both sides on the issue find out if there’s any hope of a compromise in the future we’ll talk about that and a big day for UCF football as they take the stage at the Big 12 media day new six Sports director Jamie say have their say on the noise complaint fight and what both sides have to say first though heat advisories in place for several of our local counties thanks for joining us tonight I’m Matt Austin and I’m Lisa Bell let’s get right over to meteorologist Julie Bron with how long those High temps are going to be sticking around Julie well that heat advisory is in place for all of our counties shaded in Orange for about another hour so you can see that’s pretty much everyone except for Flagler and Maran County so we are talking about triple digit heat and decease still hanging around Forest here’s a look at our current temperatures and then when you’re factoring the relative humidity how it actually feels so right now in Orlando it’s 88° but it feels like 99 91 in Cassi but feeling like 102 in the areas that have seen some rain or are currently seeing some rain that’s where you’re enjoying some rain cooled air so not quite as steamy for you here’s a look at the radar for you right now scanning out at 501 mostly rain in that last scan we’ve seen about 10 lightning strikes most of those are down in Bard County here’s how it looks as we go in a little bit closer for you you can see this little cluster of storms moving off to the southeast around 15 to 20 mph some very heavy rain in there just off to the west of Vieira put on some street level mapping for you and you can see right along North Wickham Road and Lake Wilder Road that is where you seeing about 2 to three inches of rain falling per hour as this cluster of showers and storms moves through our area we will keep some rain around this evening we’ll time that out for you but our rain chances go up we’ll talk more about what is bringing us that higher rain chance tomorrow tomorrow all that’s coming up in just a few minutes all right Julie thank you the heat is not stopping fans from heading to downtown Orlando to Camping World Stadium tonight for the Death Leopard concert but officials are making sure to take precautions and try and keep people safe the Orlando fire department is out there in full force with First Responders and first aid tents and in a change of policy Stadium officials say all concert goers can bring their bring that in and refill it new6 Emily McLoud is at the stadium right now talking with people who are trying to keep cool she will have more on how that’s going coming up on new 6 at6 turning now to a families and seniors rows of computers and camps and that’s just today this building has served the Altimont Community since 1960 some of that history is in the library itself the dedication in 1980 and the first rolling Library a resource on the road after 64 years the library is closing its doors why the expenses that we face today aren’t expenses that we face then Frank Marts is the city manager this is math there’s not enough money to pay for the stuff that we have to pay for there is now an online petition to keep the library open and the conversation continues you all felt it was important to meet here in person our story may have started online but it is best told in the community itself one of my first memories is coming to this library and getting a library card how does the library serve your life I bring my children here on a weekly basis all the homes in our neighborhood are turning over and there’s a lot of young families so this is really a terrible time to take away the library they just spent a lot of money renovating this Library just last year not a whiff of hey we’re thinking about closing this down we took those questions to the city we got the final property tax numbers only a few weeks ago some things have had to be cut they shared some perspective if the library doesn’t fit into the budget what does the city feel like is a better use of that money it’s not so much an issue of better use we have to fund police officers that is important and they’re funded out of our general fund just like all of our Recreation programs we have to fund the things that that we do that are unique the library we have three public publicly funded libraries around us so as this chapter seems to be closing here are some key dates to keep in mind you can still check out materials through August they have to be returned by September 15th and then the library officially closes its doors on September 30th in Almont I’m Katherine silver getting results news six so many people just heartbroken to see that shutting down it still doesn’t make any sense why you would renovate it about a year ago and shut the place down changed quickly I must have well it’s a good day to hide from the heat with maybe a good book inside in the AC right uh we do want to send it over now to meteorologist Julie Bron who’s been pinpointing that heat that really dangerous heat outside today yeah and we still have some heat advisories in place for about another 40 minutes I’ll show that to you in just a moment but first here’s what’s happening on the radar right now seeing some light rain across our Northern County some heavier showers picking up in Bard County and I want you to look out here out over the Atlantic that is showing us a lot of rain that will be headed our way especially as we head into the day tomorrow it’s all associated with a broad area of low pressure the National Hurricane Center actually keeping an eye on that for the potential of some development but regardless of whether it develops further or not it will bump our rain chances up for tomorrow those of you seeing the heaviest rain right now are in Bard County where you see those areas of yellow and red on the radar that shows us where we’re talking about some very intense rain so affecting areas like palmshore back down towards Sherman Park Aurora oal you’re dry right now you’re dry down toward moo but again all of this is moving off to the south and east so you’ll see that moving to into oal I would say in the next 15 to 20 minutes or so and we will keep some lingering showers around as we head into the rest of our evening then we’ll get a little bit of a break overnight now here’s what we’re talking about with that broad area of low pressure sitting off the coast of Florida the National Hurricane Center is giving that about a 10% chance of further development but again regardless it will be a rain maker for us as we head into the day tomorrow really starting very early tomorrow here are those heat advisories we were talking about all of our areas shaded in Orange are under heat advisories until 6:00 tonight some spots still feeling like the triple digits including CMI if you’re in the Villages it’s 85 but it feels like 100 for you feeling like 91 in Melbourne and it feels like 84 right now if you are in Sanford here’s a look on our light Orlando delivering hope camera looking at Camping World stadium was that a little bit of lightning we saw in that area or was that just the camera not much rain in that area but you can see some Haze and some drizzle it is cloudy right now 88 degrees of course a big concert tonight at Camping World Stadium a lot of folks are excited about but it will feel like n it feels like 99 degrees right now now the air quality not the best that is because of some Saharan dust and as we look and go through the Le several days into the weekend we will keep Saharan dust in the picture so that means our air quality will be in the Moder range for the rest of the day today and that could even decline as we head into the weekend again those heat advisories in place until 6:00 we’ll continue to see temperatures in the 80s this is what I really want you to look at as we head through the rest of the evening hours again a few of those scattered showers but notice tomorrow morning 7 o’clock you’re not used to seeing rain that early in the day rain Moves In by 7 8:00 and we’ll begin picking up as we head through the afternoon hours all thanks to that broad area of low pressure so it will be a wet day some of us could see some pretty heft rainfall totals in a short amount of time meteorologist Michelle Morgan will be here in the morning and I’ll be here in the afternoon for you now here’s your pinpoint accurate forecast your forecast brought to you by Napleton Chrysler Jeep Dodge 92 for your high tomorrow with rain chances at 70% then right back into the mid 90s as we head into the weekend showers and storms every single day but again the rain rolls in early for us tomorrow all right Julie thank you coming up the dos and don’ts when it comes to credit and debit cards so you can avoid fraud and keep your money safe we’re getting results for you here on News 6 keep it here we’ll be right back this portion of the news is sponsored by Daytona Toyota and Delan [Music] k e e e e e e well you never think it could happen to you but a new report shows credit card fraud affected 52 million Americans last year alone it resulted in more than $5 billion in losses so how can you protect yourself schemes and ripoffs producer Robert Brewer has some dues and dones for using your credit and debit cards debit and credit card transactions are more common than cash today so it gives digital criminals just an ever increasing number of opportunities to commit fraud Corey Wagner with security.org tells new6 that a survey of about a thousand people found that 60% of them had experienced fraud at least once they also compiled a dos and don’ts list so that you don’t become the next victim don’t Store card information on browsers or on websites when you’re shopping don’t check your accounts or make payments on public Wi-Fi don’t use the same password on multiple accounts if a data breach was to happen and your password to One account was accessed by a criminal and it was the same one that you’re using across multiple accounts that’s putting multiple of your accounts at risk instead Wagner recommends using a password manager like Google password or iCloud keychain other dues include reviewing your credit card and bank statements as often as possible subscribing to spending alerts and enrolling in a credit monitoring service and I would highly recommend that also for people with children people opening up credit cards in children’s name is becoming more common in fact the Federal Trade Commission found that 22,000 people under the age of 19 reported being victims of identity theft in 2023 so for people of all ages vigilance is key Robert Brewer getting results New six I’m guilty of a lot of those don’t I’m with you there you have to be careful these days well after the break another incident on a Bia County Beach we’ll bring you the latest on that plus tens of thousands of people are being owed from a bank with a number of branches in Central Florida we’ll explain who should be getting some money back into their pocket and later the cost of college has been going up for years now and so has College housing the new effort to make it a little cheaper we’re getting results on News 6 keep it here we’ll be right back e e e e e live from clickorlando.com and wkmg we’re getting results in your neighborhood now at 5:30 and now at 5:30 we’re hearing directly from the astronauts brought to the International Space Station a month ago find out how they feel about being in space longer than expected plus how officials at bethon cookman believe they’re going to be boosting enrollment this fall they making some changes glad you’re with us tonight I’m Matt Austin and I’m Lisa Bell you’re watching news 6 at 5:30 after a day of some relief we are back under a weather alert day with some intense heat out there meteorologist Julie Bren is pinpointing what we can expect for the rest of the night yeah that weather alert day only for about another half hour but still we do have those heat advisories in place for all of our counties shaded in Orange and those are up until 6 o’ so you can see everywhere except for Flagler and Maran counties today under that heat advisory and we will likely see some of those again this weekend now here’s what it looks like for you as we take a look from our light Orlando delivering hope camera over downtown Orlando notice the gray skies notice the haze we are dealing with some Saharan dust so if you have any sort of respiratory issues or asthma it is a good idea to hang out inside and that’s going to be the case for us as we move through the weekend as well now today in Orlando we made it to a high of 93 normal high this time of year is 92 and we started the day at 7 5° we’ll start out again tomorrow in the upper 70s before going into the low 90s and still if you’re heading out maybe going to that big concert at Camping World Stadium tonight feels like 99 in Orlando it feels like 100 for our friends in The Villages it feels like 91 degrees right now in Melbourne we are tracking some showers out there the heaviest rain in Bard County we’ll talk more about that and what is causing this rain coming up in just a few minutes Julie thank you taking a live look at our Daytona Toyota Delan Kia camera in Daytona Beach busy day out at the beach as people try to survive this heat looks pretty nice out there but the day in the water was spoiled by something under the surface fuchia county beach safety says a 14-year-old boy from Missouri Was Bitten in the foot by a shark just before noon today he was in kneee water now this happened in Daytona Beach Shores just north of the dun loten Bridge we’re told he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay now this is just the latest in a series of shark bites in valuch County another 14-year-old from Flagler County Was Bitten near pont’s Inlet on Monday and a 26-year-old from Sarasota and a 21-year-old from Ohio were bitten near New Smyrna Beach last week it’s been 35 days since a new spaceship took flight with its first astronauts and still NASA doesn’t know when it’s going to bring them home the Boeing Starliner crew flight was supposed to only last a week or two tests are still being done to ensure the spacecraft is safe to come home News 6 James Baro is watching the astronauts give us an update on the challenging situation from the space station so two weeks ago in the last update we got from NASA and Boeing about Starliner and Butch Wilmore and sunny Williams one of the reporters on the call asked if we could talk to Butch and sunny directly now what was initially supposed to be about a twoe mission to the station has turned out to be longer than a month for Butch and sunny but I know as professional as these two are and as focused as they are on what they control I don’t think they’re too worried I think they have all the trust in the world maybe better said in the universe and those who are helping to fix the issues on Starliner and get them ready for undocking and eventual splash down there have been multiple issues with every spacecraft that’s ever been designed and that’s the nature of what we do you know that Mantra you’ve heard failure is not an option that’s why we are staying here now I have a a real good feeling in my heart that uh the spacecraft will will bring us home no problem I’m not complaining but isn’t complaining that we’re here for a couple extra weeks best case scenario NASA says they might come home at the end of the month it sounds like it really depends on the testing that will happen related to Starliner bad thrusters and its helium wakes and if you’re wondering why don’t Butch and sunny just ride a SpaceX capsule home that seems out of the question right now the prime option today is to return Butch and sunny on Starliner there’s really been no discussion what sending another dragon to rescue the Starliner crew NASA mentioned the space station has two docking ports for Starliner or Dragon therefore they have to free one up by the time the next SpaceX crew is set to fly there crew 9ine could launch in August in Cape Canaveral bravard County I’m James sparvero getting results News 6 all new at 5:30 now bethon cookman is making improvements on campus trying to get more people to enroll in the school so the school says from 2019 to 2021 nearly half of the students they admitted ended up enrolling but in 2022 that number dropped nearly in half as new six’s derell Baker shows us school officials hope that’ll be turning around this year bethon cookman university has a lot to celebrate administrators say they’re seeing a major jump in enrollment compared to this time last year we were at about 7% over the last couple months and that continues to increase we’re now over 15,000 application over 9,000 admits and over 1,200 deposits so that means students have committed to become a wildcat around 2500 incoming students enrolled at BCU in 2023 Dr camil Shepard executive director of strategic initiatives believes they’re on track to enroll more this year is it more people that are getting accepted or is it just more applicants it’s more applicants we try to be a little more selective in terms of who we admit so our admit rate has not changed very much but it’s just the volume of application and students who have an interest this comes after students protest the conditions of the dorms and push the university to add more housing options last year Dr shepher says right now they’re monitoring and making sure the dorms are up to par so what we’re doing collectively is actually walking through the dorms checking each um room so that students um are good to go when they get here so a lot of progress have been made and we actually have an enrollment collaborative where we’re bringing all departments together to talk about all the things that students are going to need so we’re well prepared before they begin to check in this Wednesday the university opened up the Carl swier library to honor the 149th birthday of their founder Mary McLoud bethon we’ve decided this year to do an exhibit of some of the artifacts from the University archives as well as those things from her home in September BCU announced plans to tear down their oldest dorms on campus mags and Curtis Hall officials say they’re still developing their Master plans which will include a new student center on campus in Daytona Beach derell Baker getting results News 6 Jerel thank you colleges across the country have seen a drop in enrollment in recent years this might surprise you according to Education data initiative College enrollment peaked in 2010 at more than 21 million students enrolled it has dropped almost every year since enrollment in 2023 sat at just under 19 million that’s about a 10% drop from the peak and the dip in enrollment comes as more Americans seem to be growing wary about the value and cost of college with most saying they feel higher education in the US is heading in the wrong direction a new poll released just this week shows only 36% of adults say they have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in higher education while that’s the same level as last year fewer people are saying they have some confidence and more are saying they have very little or none now researchers are also trying to figure out why people are feeling less confident the top reason political agendas including schools being too political more than a third also said colleges have the wrong focus and students are not properly educated and do not learn relevant skills and about a quarter cited the cost of college as being too high it is high these days after a year of Investigations Tampa Bay Ray shortstop wander Franco is now facing charges from a relationship he may have had with a minor prosecutors in the the Dominican Republic where Franco was from charging him with sexual abuse and sexual exploitation against a minor he was arrested in January a complaint was filed against him for having relations with a 14-year-old girl the girl’s mother is also facing sexual exploitation and moneya laundering charges Franco has not played with the Rays since these allegations surfaced last July he’s on leave the MLB launched an investigation which isn’t expected to finish before the criminal case is resolved by the way he faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted a bank with a number of locations across central Florida is being forced to repay customers it allegedly wronged the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau hit Fifth Third Bank with a $20 million fine and will have to pay back 355,000 harmed customers including a thousand who had their cars repossessed the agency says the bank allegedly opened fake accounts in the names of some of their customers forced autol loan customers to buy EXT extra car insurance policies and in some cases repossess their vehicle when they defaulted officials say from July of 2011 to December 2020 more than half of the policies were charged to borrowers who either always had their own coverage or got covered within 30 days of their policy ending now if you were impacted by these Fifth Third practices you can reach out to us send us your story too the investigators at wkmg.com there are new rules in place to help your community recover from serious storms FEMA finalized those new rules today highlighted by the organization saying it will now pay for about 75% of repairs to make communities more flood resilient now keep in mind this is specifically for federally funded projects for publicly owned infrastructure I’m talking municipal buildings fire and police stations hospitals it doesn’t include say your home or a privately owned business the new standards will take future flood risk into account rather than historical data officials say at the end of the day it should make taxpayer funded projects more resilient to floods the new standards will go into effect in early September as the cost of college has risen in recent years so has the cost of living at school after the break the new student housing on the way that officials hope will cut some of those costs you’re watching news 6 at 530 getting results we’ll be right back this portion of the news is sponsored by good Greek moving and storage e e e e you know that finding an affordable place to live can be very challenging in Central Florida and that is certainly also the case for students at UCF yeah there’s just not enough off-campus student housing options and prices have jumped accordingly but three new communities with more than 3,600 bedrooms combined were just approved by Orange County Commissioners anchor Justin warmouth joins us now all new at 5:30 and Justin this is all a part of a growing push to add to the supply yeah Matt listen to this Orlando has more off-campus student housing projects in its pipeline than anywhere else in the state and it’s really not surprising when you look at ucf’s enrollment and how much it’s grown over the years the hope is that having more housing will make things more affordable for students we have a motion Orange County Commissioners gave the green light on not one not two all in favor letting me know I’m I saying I I but three all in favor Let It Be know saying I I off-campus student housing proposals all within a mile of UCF we are doing our part today to provide housing for students as close as we can get them to the university all three projects will redevelop existing sites this church will be replaced with a 595 bedroom complex another 626 bedrooms approved for this lot that currently houses a Fair Winds Credit Union and the place at alaa will provide a whopping 2400 bedrooms where a vacant apartment complex from the 7s will now be demolished we do have a lot of Redevelopment happening along Alfa Trail which is great because that’s what we want with Redevelopment and I’ve been also encouraging to get closer to the school so that we have the shuttle ability because we don’t want more traffic on the road the off-campus student housing stock has not kept up with the pace of ucf’s enrollment which has ballooned to nearly 70,000 students the prices are getting completely out of hand Jeremy band is a senior at UCF he pays around $800 a month for his off-campus apartment and that’s one of the more affordable options if you look at ucf’s website here they have a all right so clearly got a few your audio there got some audio issues got a little technical difficulties I will tell you that it’s unclear when those new developments will break ground I wish we could get some more of the story CU it included students uh not paying uh they’re paying a lot of money for for housing well UCF is just growing so much and it’s hard to continue that if there’s nowhere for those kids to live that they can even afford mean you think about 70,000 as an enrollment right and that’s a city that is a city and you have about 7,000 to 8,000 off-campus student housing bedrooms that’s not enough and and so you have to go into you have to go into the town homes into the neighborhoods around UCF and that kind of limits a supply for families looking for we did hear from Orange County Commissioner Emily Bono though in your piece and she did bring up a good point trying to get these as close to campus as possible cuz the last thing anyone wants to see in that area is more cars on the road you which is hard to avoid now I have a kid in college right now she goes to USF a lot of the new apartments that they’re putting up there are not what I would call Affordable they’ve got Resort pools and they’ve got movie theaters and so are these actually going to be they’re not where we went to school I’m like wait a minute you know student housing student housing has maybe evolved in in some places but at UCF you know they go by by the bedroom right so it’s a 4×4 and that’s a four bedrooms by four bedroom you know 4X4 four people four bedrooms they all share a common space they have their own bathroom so you’re renting it out by the bedroom a th000 bucks is what the majority of those listings are that’s incredible because I was talking to a UCF grad 10 years ago $500 for the same exact apartment complex no upgrades made just more people double double the price that’s ridiculous all right thank you Justin but at least the housing will be there let’s get you over to brought in for a look at your weather forecast for the evening Julie how are we looking still dealing with some of those lingering storms so we’ll keep some of those around for the next couple of hours meteorologist Jonathan kagus will join you at 6 o’cl and he will be pinpointing those nothing severe out there for you to worry about but tomorrow we are keeping an eye on a system sitting off our East Coast so our rain chances go up again thanks to that broad area of low pressure sitting off the coast of Florida and the National Hurricane Center is actually keeping an eye on this for the potential of some further development but we’re looking at only about a 10% chance of that the sea surface temperatures obviously very warm pretty close to land so it won’t be able to develop a whole lot and regardless it will be a rain maker for us throughout the day tomorrow and into the day on Friday here’s a look at what’s happening right now this is from our light Orlando delivering hope camera over downtown Orlando very hazy out there we do have some Saharan dust in place so that is keeping it hazy also some clouds blowing over from the area of low pressure out over the Atlantic now that did keep our temperatures down a little bit today we made it to high of 93 the normal is 92 73 is our normal low and we started our day today at 75 degrees and we will start out tomorrow again very muggy elsewhere we’re looking at 84 in leeburg it feels like 95 hello to those of you in the Villages 86 degrees it feels like 100 feeling like 99 in Okala we’ve recently seen some rain in Bard County still dealing with some light rain in Bard County that’s why you are sitting at 73° in Melbourne right now now here’s a look at the radar for you now we do have that heat advisory in place for some of our counties for about another 10 minutes we are dealing with some showers from Flagler County back down through Valia County we saw some very heavy rain in Bard County earlier that is mostly moved out over the Atlantic we are watching some showers off to the north of our viewing area those will move to the southeast and affect areas like puam County which is not technically in our viewing area as well as Flagler and valua County now here’s a look at the water vapor imagery and I’m showing you this because it gives us a good idea as to what’s happening in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere as far as moisture levels as you look out over the Atlantic you see all that green that shows us all that deep moisture associated with that broad area blow pressure and you can kind of see a little bit of a rotation there but again this is not a well-defined system at this point however it does bring us a lot of moisture overnight tonight really late tonight and into early tomorrow so the rest of the evening here we will keep some of those isolated showers in place this model doing pretty well with how things are evolving that’s that little shower I was talking about to the north of our area so that we’ll be moving into Lake and valua counties then as we end the overnight hours we get a little bit of a break with a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy Sky however we will see things really picking up during the morning hours tomorrow meteorologist Michelle Morgan will be in with you so do expect a wet drive to work tomorrow morning especially if you live along the coast now here’s your pinpoint accurate forecast your forecast is sponsored by Publix overnight tonight we fall back to 78 degre with some of those evening storms tomorrow 92 again remember that rain rolls in early some of us will see some pretty heavy rain we could see some isolated strong storms as well for Thursday and Friday with a high of 92 tomorrow 95 on Friday and in the mid90s for the weekend Julie thank you we can feel just how hot it is every time you step outside how doctors say that may be impacting your health coming up in the morning a brand new cruise ship set to pull into port canaval for the very first time this one and one of the largest in the world held a mega ship could lead to Mega business for the Space Coast plus your Pinpoint weather and traffic every 10 minutes join us for New 6 morning starting at 5:00 a.m. you’re watching news 6 at 5:30 getting results we’ll be right back this portion of the news is sponsored by Freedom Health Medicare Advantage plans e e e e e e we all know it’s hot out there and we’ve talked about the physical dangers associated with the heat like dehydration heat exhaustion and heat stroke but experts also say the heat can be impacting your mood too research shows excessive heat can trigger more anxiety stress cognitive difficulties psychologists say they see spikes in suicides domestic violence substance abuse and er visits for mental health issues when the temperatures hit excessive levels they say when our bodies have to work harder to keep cool we release the stress hormone cortisol experts say the best way to fight this is to prevent overheating that means drinking plenty of water stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and eating foods with high water content like watermelon or having a popsicle you kids officially are allowed to have popsicles well how often are you looking at the ground in front of you when you’re walking on the sidewalk if you’re not careful where you walk in one part of Jacksonville you might walk right into a final resting place yeah watch where you’re stepping we’re not joking either so look at this grave it’s in the middle of a sidewalk The Headstone says Thompson Williams who died on October 28th 1908 a local historian says it was just one grave in what was the city’s largest 19th century African-American Cemetery but the land was privately owned and donated to the city in the 1940s the bodies were removed so a community center could be built there but they kept that grave just steps away part of the cemetery remains on the edge of a park so might catch you by surprise if you’re walking along so just location he just had the right location to get to stay or he’s a very important person that they couldn’t move I don’t have the answer to either one of those question I’m curious about but watch where you’re stepping Ginger Gadson is here now with what we’re working on for News 6 at 6 Matt Lisa there will soon be a new way to get around all those attractions on International Drive and you won’t even need a car to do it coming up what we know about these new scooters and where they will be popping up plus heads up there’s a big concert in downtown Orlando don’t know if you heard about it Death Leopard and journey what First Responders will be doing to make sure everyone has a good time despite the hot temps you’re watching news 6 getting results on a Wednesday we’ll be right right [Music] back e e e live from click orlando.com and wkmg we’re getting results in your neighborhood now at 600 p.m. so now it’s 6 a new clue in the search for a 13-year-old girl’s murder on the 4th of July plus I bring my children here on a weekly basis it is the Final Chapter for a local library that has been a part of this community for more than 60 years first though here’s a live look now over Daytona Beach from our Daytona Toyota Delan Kia camera we’re seeing scattered showers on the radar more rain is on the way believe it or not thanks for joining us tonight I’m Matt Austin and I’m Ginger gadon meteorologist Jonathan kagus is pinpointing everything you need to know Jonathan yeah guys and it’s going to be a little different than what we’re used to in terms of getting our rain chances going up from those big seab Breeze collisions you see it right here we have just a few light showers out there is certainly gray for us along the coast where we took a live look in Daytona Beach we have a few scattered downpours well offshore right now it’s all because of this disturbance now the Hurricane Center does have it highlighted for a very very low opportunity for development over the next few days but it’s going to meander here it’s already a non-tropical entity so would have to go under under its transition but it’s going to lift towards the Carolinas regardless but what it will do for us is increase the rain chances gradually as we move over to the next few days taking you through the next couple of days you see the highest rain chances here as we War work through our day on Thursday working its way back on Shore and you can kind of see a little spiral there trying to lift up but again if there is development it is nothing to be concerned about here for us deep Tropics as we’ve been talking about for the past couple of days remain shut down and will likely stay that way for the next couple of weeks we’re going to talk much more about the timeline of the rain chances because of that thing coming up in about 15 minutes guys Jonathan thank you and despite this hot weather fans are packing camping world stadium for a deaf leopard and Journey concert here’s a live look from our light Orlando delivering hope camera the concert Just Got Started thankfully people are allowed to bring sealed water with them sealed bottles of water with them to stay hydrated yeah that is an interesting way to say bottles of water new sixes Emily McLoud shows us what else First Responders are doing to make sure no one overheats are more cognizant of making sure that uh concert goers are hydrating that there’s shade and air conditioning available to them and we also have a a Rescue Unit standing by all day there in case any of the concert Growers need to be transported to the hospital Orlando Fire Department District Chief Daniel Romano says just like any event at Camping World Stadium First Responders will be there ready to assist at Camping World Stadium you’re dealing with thousands of people too so you guys kind of have to keep your head on the swivel especially when it’s so hot outside yeah it’s a it’s a it’s a big event and it requires a lot of resources and we’re lucky Orlando that we have the uh the Staffing and Personnel to in order to take care of all these concert goers so they can have a fun safe event if you’re heading to Wednesday’s concert Ramona suggests wearing light colored clothing putting on the sunscreen sunglasses and bringing a hat he also recommends finding shade air conditioning and of course staying hydrated because of the high heat Camping World stadium is making it easier for people to drink water obviously our number one job is our guest and Patron safety so we take that very seriously uh we’re relaxing some uh rules you can bring an unopened bottle water sealed or an empty bottle uh just not hard-sided and we up to 20 ounces we’ll let you bring that in and refill it I think that’s awesome I was glad I saw it um on one of the sites I’m like oh we can bring water cool that’s so good cuz it is hot and it’s hydration so that’s good Chief venues officer for the city of Orlando Alan Johnson wants guests to stay safe and cool so they can enjoy all of Wes day’s Big Show we care about you once you have a good time it’s a long day it’s a long night Show’s going to go to about 11:00 so we want our patrons to be safe in Orlando with and we move forward from there neighbors are asking for compensation and attorney fees when the fight goes to trial in January well a lot of people are talking about this next story after 64 years the Altamont Spring City Library is closing leaders say they made the decision because of budget constraints but now there’s an online petition to keep the library open new six Katherine silver went to get answers we’re in the business of telling stories so it’s fitting that today we’re talking about a library this one in alont Springs but our story today really starts online with a Facebook post from the city announcing the library is closing it got an immediate reaction more than 200 comments from people who say this building is so much more than just books walk through the door and you’ll find just how much more families and seniors rows of computers and camps and that’s just today this building has served the Altimont Community since 1960 some of that history is in the library itself the dedication in 1980 and the first rolling Library a resource on the road after 64 years the library is closing its doors why the expenses that we face today aren’t expenses that we faced then Frank Marts is the city manager this is math there’s not enough money to pay for the stuff that we have to pay for there is now an online petition to keep the library open and the conversation continues you all felt it was important to meet here in person our story may have started online but it is best told in the community itself one of my first memories is coming to this library and getting a library C how does the library serve your life I bring my children here on a weekly basis all the homes in our neighborhood are turning over and there’s a lot of young families yeah so this is really a terrible time to take away the library they just spent a lot of money renovating this Library just last year not a whiff of hey we’re thinking about closing this down we took those questions to the city we got the final property tax numbers only a few weeks ago some things have had to be cut they shared some perspective if the library doesn’t fit into the budget what does the city feel like is a better use of that money it’s not so much an issue of better use we have to fund police officers that is important and they’re funded out of our general fund just like all of our Recreation programs we have to fund the things that that we do that are unique the library we have three public publicly funded libraries around us so as this chapter seems to be closing here are some key dates to keep in mind you can still check out materials through August they have to be returned by September 15th and then the live Library officially closes its doors on September 30th in Almont
