In this video I explore around Liverpool, on what is my first ride on my new Brompton. I search out how the canal connects from the Mersey into the Leeds Liverpool canal. I then follow the front eastwards towards Garston on wet afternoon.

[Music] okay [Music] oh [Music] [Music] good afternoon guys we’re back out again some different today first run out on my brumpton I’ve had it a while got it back end of last year just never had chance to get out on it um so I’m down in Liverpool we’re collecting my daughter from uni tonight um so they’re out on a show this afternoon so I’ve got a few hours to kill so I’m following the uh the canal where me started of the Weg just have a look around there then I’m going to head east along the front towards the airport area but it was chuing it this morning when we landed but it’s uh sort of fared up a bit now it’s a bit overcast but it’s dry so I’ll make the most of it bring you back [Music] yeah so the river m is over that here and this is the access to actually get onto the lead’s Liverpool Canal so we got a few locks here when me and Ian did it we picked it up further up which I’m going to head up to now but uh yeah very pleased with the little bromton so far see I chucked it in the back of the car I’ve got three hours of s to spare you know so I’ll make the most of it it’s quite warm you know overcast it’s stay and dry but we’ll continue further along this canal I’m only going to go for a little bit and I’m going to cut back across and then follow the front uh eastwards towards the airport possibly but it’s really busy on the front really busy with tourists and as you would expect yeah so this is the sea line I think mine’s the sixspeed I got the uh the rack for it and it has the front holder for the bag which I have at home I’ve added this on a little bag as you can see I’ve put like a little that’s just a bit of plastic 15 mil uh 22 mil tubing and I just Z tied it on probably see better there and I’ve got me ging on as well but yeah that does the job right onwards yeah so it rises quite a bit here that’s quite a deep one and then it rises again up will I fit through yes this bike perfectly yeah so this is where me and Ian set off from we come in that way that was Stanley flight that I’ve just come up from the front uh yeah this is where we started from [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] right we’re at liand by the Red Lion so I’ve done about 3 miles 3 or 4 miles up the canal so I’ll head back towards Liverpool everything’s all good on a little bike just going to get a drink the bite eat yeah so i’ got about three three or four mile along the canal but I’m heading back towards Liverpool this is the easiest way back on the canal again otherwise I’m having to Cross Roads traffic lights your usual stuff but this is the best option yeah it’s just nice to to get out on the bike as always any excuse eh I didn’t fancy watching a show this afternoon yeah just stopped for five we’re getting closer towards Liverpool now I think we’re about maybe 2 Mile off I think I was just over 4 and a half mile out of Liverpool but yeah tried to rain back there but it’s it’s gone off again so hopefully the rain stays off I me it’s overcast as hell it was beautiful yesterday afternoon and then we had really heavy showers but uh when the showers are gone and got out it was quite nice but uh yeah I’m quite impressed with this little bike just going to keep you know the first time using a folding bike I’m always that uh bit juy so it might fall on us but uh yeah it’s it’s all good so I got it with the uh I paid extra for the for the rack I got the pump and I’ve got the tool kit which is located in here when it’s folded I also got the lights I’ve got a light for the back and I’ve got one for the front which is that what in the car but I’m just getting used to the Gear slightly different well totally different to what I’m used to but you’ve got a high and a low and you got one two and three so but yeah so far so good yeah rain’s on so I’ve got the jacket on we’re going to get back out towards the front um it’s continue hopefully it’ll just blow through so how was that for a back drop bikes camouflaged [Music] [Music] n [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah it’s looking like the rain’s setting for the afternoon now it’s pretty Grim out there but I’m here so CU could to make the most of it but uh I’ve be going as far as I can down here but what we on 4:00 I’ve got to be back by 5 so maybe another 20 minutes then I’ll start heading back towards Liverpool but yeah all all in all it’s been a good afternoon just poing about exploring the canals around Liverpool things you don’t see when you’re in a car but you see much better on a bike much more enjoyable so we’ll make this the last bit of filming so thanks for following us today on this little explore around Liverpool the leads Liverpool Canal on the the prominade on the front and stuff like that just a general poted about on the uh on the brommie in the bromton first proper ride out on it and one good thing the brakes pretty good for Rim brakes are really good but uh what you got to watch is these small wheels with wet surface they’re a bit uh a bit slippy and now thanks for watching we’ll see you out again

  1. Shame about the weather, but it is to be expected as it is summer. The brompton looks grand and its good you have the 6 speed, the next thing will be an overnighter on the bike? I have been looking for one, but on market place as I need a good second hand one to suit my budget. I hope the whole journey down was a good one as short visits often are. ATB Big Dave

  2. Nice video.
If you're looking for a longer ride, you can hop the ferry over to Seacombe or use Merseyrail to get to Birkenhead Hamilton Square and then cycle up on to the promenade. There's about 10 miles of road-free riding you can do which will bring you over to the other side of Wirral with views of the River Dee and Wales. If you push on into West Kirkby you can get on the Wirral Way and cycle down the other side of Wirral. That's all cycle path and you can another 15 miles down the other side. You then hop on the train at Hooton and get back to Liverpool.

  3. Good to see you out on the Brommie Dave, it looks great. Looking forward to seeing you take it out for a camp.

They're great bikes, I've enjoyed 2yrs of hassle free riding on mine, just taking care of tyres and odd bit of maintenance. The only thing I didnt like was the original saddle, might as well have sat on a razor blade! I swapped it out for a Brooks and it was a game.changer.

Agree with you about the gears, they did take a bit of getting used to but its a really simple setup. I do find the gearing a little high though, particularly when on the hills and am thinking of dropping down a few teeth on the front chainring. Enjoy 👍

  4. Not seen a Brompton in these colour scheme blue and black before. Smart.
I have a red and black M6L for 18 years now. It's been absolutely brilliant and still going strong.
Now with a 39T front chain ring, meaning hills are a lot easier to climb and it spins out on the flat at about 22/23 mph.
It now has SP dymamo hub in the front wheel with Supernova E3 Pro 2 front and rear lights so never have to worry about lighting ever again. They are bright.
    Also fitted SPDs to mine,
    Short Titec bar ends,
Better Jack Kuosac Easy wheels so it rolls a lot better when folded also an Easy wheel extender so a lot more stable when folded. Rear rack is a tubular after market Ace rack lighter than the std Brompton one but still strong.

I've toured all over on mine. UK, Wales, Scotland, France, Spain, Gran Canaria as well as commuted 40 miles a day on mine for two years. Loaded up they are surprisingly capable bikes for carrying heavy loads shopping and touring.
Mine's a keeper will never part with it.
It has been through 2 bottom pivot hinges though. Just about to fit the 3rd as these are a weak point of the Brompton, but given I have ridden up and down a lot of steep mountain roads on mine loaded up eg Gran Canaria, I can cut it some slack.

Enjoy yours. Hope to see more of it on your channel.

  5. Nice short video of your 1st outing on your Brompton. I have recently bought a Brompton electric following retirement and fancy exploring the canal by going a bit further along. I've managed the trail from the pier head to the end of otterspool promenade and would like to continue on to Speke / Hale and possibly Widnes by picking up the TPT. I think that there is a short section where you need to ride along the main road, but Google maps shows a lot of cycle lane for the most part. Happy cycling.

  6. I like your video Dave, which brings back memories- My daughter was also at Liverpool Uni and I miss our days out there since she finished..it’s a great place! ..however me and my cycling pals have a ride planned that way later on this year..probably a circuit of the Wirral – lots of traffic-free rail trails etc running alongside the Dee and Mersey estuaries.

I bought a used 6 speed Brompton 2 years ago and love it. I’ve used it loads and done a few tours – just got back from 400 miles around Brittany, with a hassle-free train journey to Plymouth and back! I have fitted a 39t chainring so hills aren’t a problem – don’t know why Brompton don’t offer this as an option!

Have you seen Susanna Thornton Brompton Tourer on YouTube? Amazing lady.
