welcome to the gcn tech show this week we’re discussing the secret Tech that Pros are using at the Tour of France because what is really cool and there’s a surprising amount of it we also have loads more hot Tech including new shoes from Canyon a Migel inan custom pinell and a bunch more hot Tech from the tour to France as well as comments of the week and the bike Vault uh right before we talk about secret products that Pros are using yeah the big French bike ride is still in full swing yeah and if you’d like to support gcn and we need your support more than ever um now we’re independent again well we’ve got some big French bike ride merch available at shop. Global cycling Network check it out both wearing there’s still some big French bik ride bottles left as well get in there quick and I’ve got one down here this could actually be one that’s for sale Edition I’ll look after it anyway we’re talking about top secret Tech that to France Riders to use it so this is different to the sponsor stuff we’re sort of kind of talking about products where theyve moved away from what they’re supposed to be using and you know arguably these products are more interesting because all the all the teams and Riders have sponsors yeah and so if they’re using something that isn’t sponsor correct then there’s usually a very good reason for that yeah and arguably it can be a bigger endorsement for that product than if they were actually sponsored yeah I mean there’s lots of different reasons that this could be happening it could be because they deem it to be a performance Advantage it could be that the product or item that they’re sponsored by doesn’t quite fit them right isn’t quite the right thing or they just don’t get on with it like sometimes if you’re sponsored by a certain energy drink supplier or something you might go well I just I just can’t use that product yeah or sometimes they don’t have a sponsor that fulfills a specific need so not every team will have say a shoe sponsor or not every team might have a a helmet sponsor that that makes a time trial Helmet or something so the there’s there’s that aspect as well well either way I find all this stuff incredibly interesting yes so we’ve picked out some of our standout things I’m laughing because I know what’s first on the list I know what you’re going to say well the other thing before we get in that the other category we forgot about it’s just prototype stuff which is also really interesting I didn’t know you going to say that well yeah secret top secret Ty things um but well secret things the pro use yeah obviously before people will be in the comments say this so we got beat him to it yeah hidden Motors look I know we spoke about it before we’ve had in-depth conversations about it I don’t think people are using Motors but I’m excited by the the potentially the concept and the tech behind it well the final um episode of the of the ghost in the machine podcast by Chris Marshall Bel is out a shout out to that um and and and you know that is discussing that some pretty big revelations in it and the UCI seems to firmly believe that they have been you know used and it’s a thing and otherwise wouldn’t be looking for it yeah I mean it’s fine Jew’s out but yeah we cannot confirm or deny if that is happening but yeah we’ll we’ll keep an eye on it we’ll keep an eye on it and right darling it back on what slightly more sensible and plausible things let’s talk about Wheels because clearly it’s a really visual part of the bike and I’m not generally want want to talk about road bikes here because when you get into the time trial like setup and stages is where it feels like you start to see people deviating away from the norm of the sponsor stuff right uh yes so one of the big ones is the use of Aero coach wheels in time trials so this is non-sponsor correct stuff yeah so if you look at avenol and Pacha one and two in the in the in the TT at this is toward France yeah they were both using um AO coach Titan front wheels and um also pagat was using the arrow coach disc at the back interesting because yeah the the brands do make this stuff but something that just occurred to me is sometimes in the past I’ve known that teams have managed to exclude time trial equipment from some of their sponsor agreements because it’s so specific to individual Riders so that as well was a possibility yeah and and well just to be clear so both of those teams are not sponsored by Arrow coach they’re choos they bought those items to use them specifically in that capacity which you would guess is because they deem that to be a faster piece of equipment than what they would normally use from their sponsor yeah it’s generally like a a performance consideration is it people aren’t just going oh I want to use that color like it’s because they’re set on going fast right yeah and that disc wheel has a very curious shape and it has that we that quite unique like embossed pattern around yeah it’s weird is the sort of lenticular disc I was going to say wavy profile but that’s not really it’s kind of it it’s interesting and the front is just really deep it’s like 100 Mil deep that Titan so that’s a big deep boy yeah and talking about time draws actually time draw helmets are where we often see people deviating away from the norm and the sponsor correct stuff um so as you said some Brands might not have a helmet sponsor that does a Time dry Helmet or have just gone you know what we really need to use this helmet and then they tape over The Branding yeah um fdj is a interesting team in that regard they their Riders I’ve seen them using different time trial helmets from different brands that they just cover up The Branding um Stefan Kung one of the best in in the world at the discipline you know he we’ve said it before he keeps using a wide body met drone yeah and and then um is a fast helmet on a lot of people yeah that’s been tested by a lot of people and M P also they’re not sponsored by met but he other people on his team use that helmet as well I think it’s funny when you see like Riders using the wrong part and they’ve literally just like put pen over the logo or put tape over it I think it draws your attention to it more yeah I think it’s just one of those helmets that just draw that just like tests fast on quite a lot of people yeah um which is good the the something else I spotted was a new vision handlebar on W van Arts bike I haven’t spotted this so you’re you’re going to have to carry this like what gave it made it look different was the carbon weave was very clearly visible there like a big thick weave on it yeah so I’m guessing it’s probably a different shape but that does Talking of handlebars it’s not just like prototype new things yeah the pros often do use handlebars that the rest of us can’t get or or don’t have yeah we’ve seen this a couple of times different teams I think is it is pitcock using a slightly different handlebar yes this is quite a curious thing so it was on on his new PIN LOF the rest of the team all have the new cockpit yeah to go new bik yeah which is Mega like I mean I I BL in love it the fact that it’s available in every single size combination stem and width imaginable um but Pitcock appears to be using the old shaped bar with the new style stem so they’ve it’s something that’s been specially made oh wow okay yeah Fair um Matthew Vander Paul also seems well a lot of the um Canyon sponsored teams have that like negative angled stem which is different to what you get as a customer as well yeah on the canyon cockpit it it the if you if you have a look vanderpool’s stem definitely points down quite a bit more than so we have we notic this a while back right and a couple of weeks ago I was actually out at Canyon Mega base in Germany and I asked the the actual handlebar engineer the guy that designs this stuff I was like look OE and I always talking about whether vander’s got a different handlebar setup to what’s available he yeah we make make them special ones there you go there you go that was the answer that was easy yeah um what about special frames too because I feel like this is an area that lots of people speculate about but I feel quite confident in saying pro riders are basically using the like off the-shelf offering basically yeah I think this is something that used to happen a lot more than it happens now I I too believe that most Pros are us off the peg bikes the same as what you or I would buy in the past you know 10 years ago I think this was happening more but uh where they would get a special Pro only layer super lightweight um although you know we did see when I was there at this year’s tour that Lotto Destiny did have some prototype orbea frames which are rather cool that were a special layup to be lighter and stiffer and designed around the build of an average Pro rather than an average cyclist yeah that makes sense so does that mean in theory judging by the the way UCI rules and regulations work some point soon that’s going to have to be made like a proper commercially available bike do you think yeah but there’s there’s rules within that about the prototyping process and you can use prototypes in races but they have to be like a you know but yeah I think it could be something that we see released in the future that’s exciting but I mean well the but the other thing is like I think in the past we have seen like well pinell did like their extra light version which was essentially like a pro only one but that was commercially available as well but I can’t yeah I can’t remember what it was it was like it was like a thinner just thinner frame basically prior to that you remember when we tested in the Wind Tunnel I I got Bradley Wiggins uh bik yeah yeah when you did all the different Generations yes and that uh f8 of Bradley Wiggins that we had yeah that that was was like there was just something about that like it was it was very like that bike and I felt that that was okay I felt that that could have been like a special one a special edition because it was lighter than it was just noticeably lighter than other pinell f8s that I’d seen in the past okay um well I mean we can’t get through a list like this is top secret Tech without mentioning wax chains right oh yeah yeah yeah yeah so you you R the Tour of France with down U just before it started actually you sent me the picture of this little note which was written on the Chain St of someone’s bike and you were like guess whose bike this is I had no idea so I mean tell the story well yeah it was in the video hot Tech at the tour if you’ve not seen it but yeah Victor Camp Arts is waxing his chain and there were other bikes that we saw that had wax chains on as well and those teams aren’t sponsored in terms of their Lube sponsor by a brand that offers a chain waxing solution so they’re doing DIY Solutions yeah and I mean what I’ve I’ve spoken to mechanics in the past so and I think it’s quite telling but like yeah visma Lisa bike yeah their mechanics do on mass wax chains yeah yeah and there and you can see like Remco I’ve always seen remco’s bike has a wax chain on it well when I did the visma truck tour the guy was saying they they start with Absolut masses of wax chains and then like halfway through the zerro they like get a fresh batch in and switch them all out so it’s a different workflow though for the mechanics and that’s where it falls down because they’re not used to it because they just basically get this thing of they jet wash all the bikes at the end of every stage full dease full jet full degrease full jet wash that’s not how you would treat a wax chain it’s totally different and so it’s a different workflow so some of the other teams haven’t worked out how to I think also um I don’t want this to sound wrong but I think it’s also like a changing of the times right like a lot of mechanics are like old schore they’ve been doing it for like 30 years stuck in their ways yeah and like gradually like the tech evolves and you’ve got a kind of go with the times and involv with it right yeah it’s a performance game yeah at that level yeah you know why wouldn’t you if you’re trying to win them BL T there actually something about wax chains I’m going to mention hot Tech but we’ll save that for later in the show oh nice um another one is uh clothing yeah I mean like skin suits is a big one because the the skin suits make more difference than the bike arguably like people you know clothing makes more difference and um you know a lot of the time Riders are getting their clothing tailored specifically to them so it’s not an off the peg item yeah it’s not just a size medium is it you think why why do the prows always have like really good fitting kit it’s like that’s why um but the other thing is there especially in the time trials and stuff like the brands yeah they might have a clothing sponsor but that brand might not make a very good skin suit or they might not make a skin suit at all so then they often go to another brand to make the skin suit for them so you know in the past like and this still happens now so for example like bioracer and no pins here in the UK yeah they make a lot of skin suits that are used in the world tour that then get just branded up as something well when when I was racing um so even at like low level UCI racing there was I don’t want to name any names and Brands here but there was a couple of riders on my team that went and got a skin suit made from a company that they knew was a really fast garment and item and then just had it printed in all of the team colors and the sponsors and and the wrong branding printed on the kit as well and then they turn over at the race and people are like what are you doing that’s like not our kit well this I mean this is this happened back in the day with Team Sky yeah you know Adidas did not make a Cutting Edge skin suit they didn’t no well you know there you go um right is that pretty much our list of top secr Tech or we energy drinks well I think well you mentioned like Sports Nutrition products that’s an easy one to hide and it’s a thing it’s a thing where like people do have a preference I just don’t like the flavor of that and if it’s or or or that thing doesn’t get on with my gut and it’s something that they’ve got to eat bucket loads of over the course of three weeks you want to you want to get on well with it you they’re going to have the thing that they like to eat you don’t have to be doing a Tom Duman halfway every race that said I did see a lot of precision kicking around yeah well I mean we’ve experienced lots of different brands that’s pretty easy going I’m going to say in terms of flavors and stuff like that it’s just very mild on it’s easy to get in um which is kind of what you want really um the the other thing I think I spotted is is Saddles really yeah yeah different okay well I think I think Saddles Saddles and shoes it’s like those contact points yeah because we you know in the past we’ve seen Riders who have been on a team that has a shoe sponsor and then they the sneaky thing they often do is get like shoe covers printed yeah they look like the Sho like the actual shoe like a bit camouflage um but but now a lot of brands just let Riders have in a lot of teams let Riders have individual shoe sponsors because of that reason yeah I think sometimes teams now like move away from even having a shoe sponsor they’re like you know what we’re wasting our time here just use the shoes that you want to use yeah um and a lot of riders do sign their own shoe deals which I think makes sense and then the other thing is um Saddles yeah so teams then tend to do have a saddle sponsor and a sneaky thing we noticed on Mark cavendish’s bike actually was he has a a physique saddle but they they’ve put like um a pro logo sticker on it to make it look like a we just called him out now there you go we don’t get in trouble um right is that our list of top secret Tech that we’ve spotted I think basically if there’s more stuff that you guys at home have seen let us know in the comments section down below because it’s kind of like fun little game of picking the stuff out right yeah yeah all right it’s now time for hot and spicy Tech and we’re going to kick things off with chain waxing cuz we are a pair of nerds oh yeah so this was something that was spotted I think at the start of the Tour of France there a chain waxing machine now details about it’s pretty thin on the ground but we can see what it looks like and I think I understand the principle of how it works do you have you seen it first yeah it it looks like a turbo trainer at first yeah apparently it’s the next generation of chain waxing from a company called cyc wax yeah yeah I mean Cy wax have been sort of quite you know innovators in in the chain waxing you know the whole coming up with the little kit with the Melting Pot and the little wire thing it’s like so I mean I’m looking at it right now it looks like a bike stand that is M with a chain I thought it was a smart trainer when I first saw it I get the idea I think basically it heats the wax up drips onto your chain as you back pedal through right so in theory it removes the hassle for like taking the does I don’t know I don’t know you’re asking me questions I don’t know the answer to I don’t know good to know you’ve well researched this particular item on this week’s show there’s no information out about it other than like purely speculating right I think this is complicating chain waxing more than just taking I’m going to reserve judgment I’m I’m going to message cycl waes and find out what the deal is there’s a section at the bottom of the website that you can fill out to try the system out maybe just do that right next I’m in hot Tech we have got a custom Migo inur bike from pinell yeah well inur famous for using pinell throughout his career um at Beno our records on the swords and you know all through his tour to France victories and stuff um they they’ve made him a new bike yeah he still rides a lot you know big Mig big mck are you on those of terms with him are you he does well he does that um he does the big amazing Grand Fondo in in Spain quos oh okay wow um and yeah he’s he’s he’s he’s big into it big Mig um so he was riding this customized bike at the maratona the other weekend and it is in full luxer red design and apparently um he collected it in person it does look incredible and also it looks like to my eye that looks like it’s a 575 as well the same size I ride I we basically got so much in common me and big mck yeah both ride pinell both ride five 575 yeah oh any any other similarties basically the same person both have heads yeah yeah yeah should I move on yeah I was want to tell you one funny story about big Mig right I feel like you’re sharing it anyway oh I’m going to tell you as I was in I was in mior in Parmer and I went into the Rafa Cafe yeah and I ordered a coffee from this guy and there was this like the guy made my coffeee and served me yeah right and I went do you know who you look like you look like you look like Miguel inuring and he was like see he is my father what yeah oh that is actually a cool story I’m glad you shared that with me um right also do you like my accent then was that good you like yeah it was better than any accent Connor has ever done before sorry Connor um right we need to talk about the glasses that Dylan gron was spotted wearing at the Tor of France because cuz I saw him at EUR bik right I made a little video um and people are like losing their mind slightly about it what do you think about them the little nose beak is it too Batman like is it arrow is it cheating is it for some protection I this is I mean we always we always like talk about the UCI not having jurisdiction okay they do this is a this is this is a moment where I’m glad that in some places they do have jurisdiction okay leave it that okay um oh one thing though I asked Manon last week right yeah how many watts would they have to save you in order for you to wear them uh 10 it’s that glass is going to be 40K an hour proven it’s going to be categorically you 10 watts at 40K an hour and you wear them yeah if it’s it’s any less I’m not interested but I mean that’s got to be like not just like yeah 99.9999 no I’m not interested um right what are we next time trial Tech I spotted the new giant Trinity Prototype at eurobike check out the video was out of the weekend have you got any thoughts on the bike well it looked good didn’t it I mean it does look good it’s it’s gone um wide boy fork super like deep Fork blades and the same for the rear stays basically I mean we we it’s been around a while now cuz Luke pla’s been riding on it in the in the toal France warmup races and stuff so um yeah H also another cool bit of TT Tech Bruno amarai French national TT Champion riding for a the kathon a des L um he had his new van vonel Vel TT bike uh which it has this like Galaxy paint job on it and then the French national colors but it’s like all like stars it look like the paint job looks sparkly in like stars and Galaxy and it looks the van valel I’ve been um rolling out some cool custom like paint on some of the bikes as well and I’m sure I’ve seen a slightly different looking road bike out there somewhere I don’t know um what else are we talking about oh new handlebar you mentioned earlier on that W van was ring I think there was a custom painted version for Mark Cavendish which was very slick looking um that’s that’s pretty much the last of my hot Tech from the Tour of France cool um not from the Tour of France not seen there but also in hot Tech this week some new shoes okay which is from Canyon yeah not known for making shoes but they’ve they’ve launched some new shoes they’re called The Temper CFR Footwear line that’s in line with their branding is it’s CFR Footwear of course well yeah um and they they’ve got two sets of shoes so they’ve got their road racing shoe and they’ve also got a shoe that’s designed for um cross country mountain biking and performance um like gravel racing and stuff they are priced at $329.95 yeah and uh the road shoe weighs 250 g in a size 42 yeah and the off-road shoe which has like is this very similar looking but has like a gum tread on on the bottom of it um or has a black tread on on the other one different color they’re priced uh the same and they’re 290 G in size 42 I like the look of these they look similar to a shoe that I’ve seen before is what I would say they look white well well they look they’re available in white and black and they come with the nice like lithium boowa dials on them I think they look really smart yeah they do look really cool I like simple looking shoes I like my my favorite I don’t like it when there’s loads going on not bothered by the colors are you cuz you’re color blind no I can’t see him um finally in hot Tech I want to talk about a new Mini pump I’ve got not that exciting right this is from to peque right olle I I’ll exclude you for a second OE had one of these a few weeks ago I was immediately very jealous and um asked to PE to very kindly send me a new one out so this is going to be my new pump moving forward it’s small But Mighty packs packs have punch that thing yeah and the pump as well yeah right unbelievable more hot Tech next week uh it’s time now for comments of the week these are comments that you’ve left under videos on the channel over the last last week brilliant love it from the the show last week I wasn’t here it was you and man on first comment is from Sparky J 231 they say man on was Catching Feelings when that French accent popped out what’s this all about [Music] [Music] then quite quite a lot got 193 likes that comment there quite a lot of comments about this on last week’s show it explained what happened um I’m assum you speak French where on brilliant um guess we’ll lose you to gcn on FR then soon see you P pet right I don’t know what to say cuz I don’t know what you’re saying okay don’t worry about it right uh Justin next says why is it that every channel refuses to mention the cube bikes of inter Mar wanty when talking about cheap toor of France bikes those bikes cost € 7,600 for a full build only have a slight modification for the pros wellan you did mention them you just mentioned them just then yeah I did then there you go yeah uh well we said in the talking point like if there’s something we’ve missed uh pop it pop it in the thing and that’s a great Point did you manage to miss that one out I think we might have missed those but I need to take a closer look look cuz I think once you add on things like the power meter and stuff you are getting probably into the middle tier yeah yeah fair and also thing on their things they upgrade the tires so they often use the TT GP 5000 yeah I like that wax their chains yeah they do do that underneath the truck tour video so um what team did you visit again remind me uh so Lotto destiny yes yes okay Kristoff one with his first comment is this how Alex gets his J A cranks yeah I just visited trucks and steal all their cranks well no actually they go to him when they run out they go to Alex’s house and say have you got any more of the go cranks L around like a like a CR draw like a black market supplier I am yeah um and then this this question a apollon iOS beatman says anyone else wish they could smell the truck no probably just them it describe this is going to be this is going to be YouTube go describe smell the aroma it smells clean but with a a slight sort of metallic tinge and a a bit of solvent okay underneath the urite videos um because I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before I was at urite last week um rad 1380 says I could listen to Colin say rubber cover all day haha rubber cover rubber cover rubber cover burkard AES said Folks at gcn take these three reports by Alex from eurobike as benchmarks don’t go back from this they were outstanding by far superior to everything I have ever watched no idea who the selection of who the selection of content happens having been on eurobike that selection seems to be very appropriate very well appreciated I in particular as well the density of content no clutter no diversion still convenient to follow congrats well that’s quite that’s quite the review of your eurobike content that was I was mostly appreci Bard approves I was appreciating your commitment to sticking to reading the comment out in that style that’s how Bard talks right I know we’re joking right but it is it is appreciated because we do try blooming hard to make videos that people are interested in right like we try our best and at eurobike is literally just a case of uh me and marrick who’s filming the show today we walked around eurobike and we were like this looks cool let’s tell everyone about it yeah time looking three days it’s good fun actually looking for cool stuff and just showing people I enjoy yeah okay um that’s basically it for comments of the week this week so it’s now time for the bike Vault and the bell is just down here don’t mind me sorry um there we go how’s the bike V Work people can upload their bikes yeah just uh click the link in the description below takes you to the uploader and you can submit pictures of your bikes and we judge them to either be nice or super nice if they’re super nice I like spr Bell so first up we have got Casper Butlers Casper Butlers I don’t know what bike this is is but it’s very stealthy it’s carbon fiber is it algra is that algra 10 speed or 11 speed like the previous gen I love the generations I love the little teeny cassette yeah I’m into that super nice to me super nice yeah minimalist I like it and I like the coordination of the red on the wheels on the saddle and the B tape it’s good uh full metal beans rate that balfs bike and workshop like this fast forward Wheels chinelli gravel bike uh I think I’m digging it it’s a shame the the valves and the tires not quite aligned but I can let that slide to be fair I’m quite happy letting that slide yeah yeah I think I think we can yeah I’m up for that one I like that one super nice next we’ve got Brendan W with a Tre uh is this a amonda I want to say I guess right not in Biggy Smalls bigy second wheels are all over it shop it’s like precariously lent against that Shrubbery and the the like the fork is getting rubbed by that blue brick wall front doorstep needs a bit of paintwork it’s just a I mean I mean he’s aligned the wheels but yeah I think there’s potential here but there is a lot it’s a beautiful bike feels like a rush job honest so we’re going to say nice Rush okay um Donnie manium with a robus I don’t know this brand what look at the head tube though and look at the spaces on that is quite possibly the largest number of spaces I think I’ve ever seen on a on a on a bike apart from the one that I bought the one that had the stereo tube Extender on top extender please never ever use one of those bik it’s incredibly dangerous um that’s a lot of a lot of spaces going on there but that’s fine if it makes it fit what’s what is it lent against it looks like netting off of a field like to keep the birds off of the crops yeah not that I know meing industry I mean if if a shadow stand is Optimum this is the complete opposite that is that is the other end of the what is of all the things that you 1. The Cyclowax machine at first seems to be a solution searching for a problem when it is real easy and fast to remove your quick link and then immersive wax the chain… but, then I thought, maybe the pros that can put down serious power aren't using quick links as they might be weaker than standard rivets. Do you know if pros use quick links or not?

  2. 26:27 The name Appolonius – as in Appolonius or Rhodes is famous for having written the Argonautica (from where we get the Ray Harryhausen classic movie with the skeletons and Talos the bronze god from Jason and the Argonauts)

  3. Hi perfect French 😊, I have a question for ma tt bike , which is the best combo tubeless tyre ok tubetype + latex caa ?

  4. stop talking this motors BS – you have not one single point to prove it's use, not even for a justified suspicion; that is absolute bad journalism – not even the German Bild-Zeitung or the British Sun would do it without being able to present anything!!! You want our support? You need our support more than ever, as you said? Then make content what is worthy of support!!! My support for GCN ends here and now…

  5. This is basically a straight-up copy of Cade Media. Come on guys.. I see a lot of content appear on this channel that Cade Media has covered already. Even asking the same question about watts savings on the weird sunglasses. Word for word copy.

  6. I use waxed chains that a buddy of mines does for me. I am looking to fully convert to waxed chains. Can you do a segment on waxed chain maintenance and cleaning?

  7. Dr. Bridgewood, isn't a lithium BOA dial an unnecessary risk? Would it not oxidise rapidly in the rain producing copious clouds of hydrogen and caustic aqueous Lithium Hydroxide? Is this not a possible fire risk?

  8. Enve didn’t make a disc wheel for the longest time. They even had Simon smart saying it wasn’t faster if you’re not going 50kph. And you knew it was bogus because the enve sponsored dimension data always had a disc wheel in TT’s.
And I remember trek used to put Bontrager stickers on the disc wheels they were using.

  9. You should get yourself a big chain wax pot then you can clime in with your wax and get all waxy and whatever it is your truly after….. I don't want to know. What i put on my chain even though its oil i don't feel the need to tell everyone everywhere i go.
I could care less what you put on your chain. Why do waxers always feel the need to tell you about it. NOBODY CARES.

  10. The bike frames have to be exanubed approved by the UCI to get the UCI Approved sticker on the seat tube, so custom one-off bikes would be pretty rare… ?
