After already amassing tens of millions of US users, TUBI hopes to make a success here in the UK! Launching its platform, how will it compete against the existing streaming services, and not to mention the established public service broadcasters?

help support amtv by becoming a patron an amtv staff member and following us over on Twitter and there guys it’s Adam Martin here and welcome back to another video and today we’re going to be talking about a new streaming service that’s coming to the UK or indeed has arrived and whether or not it will be able to challenge the established Brands and actually make a dent and that of course is 2b if you’re a viewer from overseas particularly the US you will be familiar with 2B it’s a streaming service that is completely free and hosts a wide variety of content so why is it only coming over here now what’s the reasoning we’re going to try and find out the article today comes from BBC News which says Fox is set to launch free Netflix rival in the UK now just to preface this I don’t know much about tub I know it existed in the US but I don’t know that much about its history or anything like that a quick search will tell you it’s been around for 10 years it launched in 2014 and supposedly at the minute it has over 80 million monthly active users in the us alone now the US is a much bigger place than the UK but still 80 million active users is not to be sniffed at so let’s have a read rer Murdo Fox Corporation is entering the UK’s highly competitive free ad supported video streaming Market tub will compete with the likes of Netflix Disney plus ITV X and channel 4 streaming platform as well as the BBC I player the platform has been quickly gaining market share in the US where according to Fox it has almost 80 million monthly active users and again that that number is not to be sniffed at already though I do wonder is tub one of those where you know is it one of those where it’s always add free no matter what or is there a is there a paid subscription option you know similar to how ITX You could argue is free but if you pay I think it’s still what $5.99 a month something like that you get the content ad free just having a look at tub it seems there isn’t that option which might have interesting results but we’ll we’ll talk on that a little bit later in the UK tub says it will launch with more than 20,000 films and TV series including content from Disney Lionsgate NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Entertainment interesting particularly from Disney considering Disney has their own streaming service that is active worldwide of course there are certain properties that will still be in the midst of you know licensing deals and stuff like that where they can be leased out and stuff but an interesting mix the platform will also include a selection of British Indian and Nigerian content okay so British one makes sense because you know if you’re launching in the UK you want to appeal to the UK audience don’t underestimate India and Nigeria man India obviously the the Bollywood scene in particular that is you know historic in terms of film history I’m not too familiar with Nigerian content but listen there’s clearly an audience out there for it enough that tub are going to you know push it more heavily UK viewers will be able to access content on the tub web page via a smartphone app and on Smart TVs in terms of a spokesperson uh they’ve said that tub has spent the last decade honing our approach to vast free and fun streaming in North America and we feel that now is the perfect time to bring that recipe to UK audiences that was said by the chief executive and J sud Fox corporation which again is Rupert Murdoch’s company that bought Tob in 2020 for $440 million us which equates to about £348 million as the US media giant looked to attract younger audiences and I think this is something a lot of the older brands are struggling with not you know you you got to reach the new generations and as new generations are turning away from traditional linear TV as we’ve talked about several times they’re turning to the streaming services all these older corporations are grasping for that you know what’s our in on this Market in recent years streaming companies like Netflix Amazon Prime video and Disney Plus have launched ad supported services and raised subscription prices as they tried to boost revenues the moves come as they face pressure to spend more money to grow their libraries of content as they try to attract more customers in an increasingly competitive market yes I mean you know we saw with Netflix over 10 years ago now the rise of the you know original content Banner Netflix has been pumping that out since like 2013 Amazon do it as well Disney plus all of these streaming sites or at least a lot of the major ones produce their own material and you’d think well why would they spend the money to do that it’s not cheap to produce TV or film anymore well it never was but you know what I mean it’s become a lot more expensive why would you make that investiture well I think if a if a streaming service library of content is purely archive stuff that’s great that’s not necessarily A detriment but you know what we like as audiences we’re also looking for new things we’re looking for new shows new films new documentaries just new kinds of programs to Intrigue us and if they can’t buy those in or don’t want to buy those in from you know rivals or different companies then why not make it themselves it’s a risky move it’s not always lucrative in fact I believe isn’t Netflix billions of dollars in debt because they just keep borrowing to make more stuff Abby Watson who’s the senior media Analyst at Enders told the BBC that while 2B had been very successful in the US the UK was a very different media environment ment it’s already well catered For in the free online video space as the public service broadcasters have invested heavily she said a service with little or no unique content such as tub could find it difficult to gain traction although efforts by Foreign operators to break into the UK’s free video streaming Market had so far been half-hearted and I sort of get what she means you know the public service broadcasters the BBC ITV Channel 4 they have invested heavily recently in moving content online having more of a digital footprint in this space in ing in their in their you know video on demand Services their streaming services they’re really pushing for that digitally L streaming future and you know you could say you know in terms of free content yes we pay a license fee but they’re generally the most accessible broadcasters we have out there the BBC ITV Channel 4 channel 5 Etc so when when the media analyst there talks about it being half-hearted the any newcomers really have to go for goal because as much as people might criticize these established broadcasters here in the UK they do have their audiences there’s a reason why people constantly keep going back to him I mean in fact Channel 4 for example experienced growth recently which was surprising considering the you know projected Doom and Gloom of the traditional media space in March Mr Murdoch’s talk TV network announced that it would stop broadcasting as a terrestrial television channel and became a strictly online service the network launched in 2022 but struggled to attract viewers on its linear platform Mr Murdoch had hoped the network would shake up the broadcasting establishment by offering an opinion Le alternative to ablished Outlets yes and we did a video on this about talk TV how they’ve you know sort of renounced their linear presence and if that was the hope that Mr Murdoch would want to re you know shake up the establishment similar to what he did back in the 80s with Sky I just don’t think the conditions were necessarily there for it there are people out there who like opinion Le content especially when it comes to things like news and current affairs you know if that’s your bag that’s absolutely valid for me I don’t necessarily want opinion Le I just want I want the facts I want decent reporting so for that reason I personally choose to stick with the BBC not everyone does that’s you know it’s up to you it depends what you prefer but I think if Mr Murdoch was hoping that talk to he was going to be this revolutionary Game Changer in the linear television space then I think he’s you know a tiny bit out of touch the media Tycoon played a pivotal role in the development of the UK’s broadcasting industry by launching sky in 1984 some commentators saw talk TV as an attempt by Mr Murdoch to create a success with sky this is exactly what I’m talking about you know Sky you know you could argue slow start but it did become this massive Juggernaut that it still is today not all of us had Sky TV I didn’t have Sky TV I wonder who else didn’t have Sky TV Mr Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox sold its 39% stake in Sky to NBC Universal Zone a Comcast in 2018 after losing a bidding battle for the network it’s all change it’s all change just to provide you a bit more analysis on how 2B is going to break in I do want to take a look at the website it has launched so stick around because we are going to take a look at what it looks like how it presents itself but I just want to bring you some analysis from RXV uh you know always go and check them out great articles there they say potential disruptor making use of streamer Su licensing content so a potentially different view to that one we had earlier where the analyst said uh it’s probably not going to make a dent it says the already highly competitive streaming Market is about to become even more competitive established streamers have already resorted to offering ad supported teers with lower subscription prices now to be threatens to offer stream as a completely free ad supported service with content from Big names like Disney NBC Universal owned by Comcast and Sony Pictures Entertainment cast strapped households May welcome this extra Choice Netflix and Co will not so this is the big thing like I said some will say oh you haven’t got a tier where you can pay for no ads you know you some may see that as a detriment but the thing is like it points out here in terms of the streamer so I’m not talking about the public service broadcasters I know I mentioned ITX earlier but put that out of your mind for now things like Netflix Disney plus they have a ad supported level but it is still paid for I could be wrong on this but isn’t the Netflix one the ad supported TI is it5 a month I could be wrong on that but you still have to pay what tube be saying is look we’re offering all this content you know 20,000 films and TV shows across a whole variety of jamras and it’s free yes there’s ads but you’re not paying a single penny I guess this is what it means that the streamers Netflix Disney Plus at all they’re going to be raising their eyebrows at this they’re not going to like this at all I I do think though the earlier analysis about UK streaming sites or with the public service broadcasts ITX Etc considering their ad supported tiers are free like tub I think that’s what it means in the UK this might be a bit more of a struggle than it is say in the US tub is set to make the most of some of the biggest Hollywood Studios and media organizations subl licensing more of their content to others for a time all big media companies effectively locked out other companies from showing their content as they built up their own content libraries delivered on their own streaming platforms as streaming growth has slowed and companies have racked up debt developing streaming services Netflix looking at you there these same companies have sought to sub license more content to third parties to provide an extra income stream the bbci player ITX and channel 4 streaming already contain a variety of shows sub licensed from us media Giants the end result is that like on traditional broadcast TV streamers will have two choices either subscribe to a big name streamer to watch exclusive content first or wait until a free streamer gets the rights and that is a very interesting point companies are starting to loosen up and sulic their properties now back out in in an attempt to raise money and hopefully pay off some of that debt in terms of waiting till a free streamer gets the rights that isn’t going to happen overnight you know that’ll take I don’t know maybe at least a year perhaps if not longer so I think there is still that appeal for some people who want to pay to receive exclusive content first but I think it depends on the quality of the exclusive content you’re offering in the first place you know okay so this is the front page of tub when you go on it it has launched in the UK it’s available for you now there’s obviously a button to register and sign in so you will need to make an account with them but again to stress that this is completely free there’s a rotating list of things that are available to watch Classics there like the horror Candyman from 1992 that’s on there Moonrise Kingdom a comedy drama from 2012 I’m not too familiar with that one just want to see the cycle through Think Like a Man another comedy romance from 2012 again I’m not overly familiar with that one SLE which I believe actually is a original yes a tub original so they are making original content Great British menu from 2018 a reality lifestyle program Twilight Saga oh God I remember all these so you can already see there’s a range there now when you scroll down it’s got recommended you’ve got things like the Rob zombie version of the monsters which does have Sylvester McCoy it the Seventh Doctor Who I’d be curious to see that Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey which is quite something if you haven’t seen it uh the Blair Witch remake the remake of The Crazies Samson Olympus Has Fallen that was a decent film actually and then what else we got as you can see this is very this is laid out like every other streaming site these big bars in different genres so you’ve got horror there there’s another 2B original cabin girl I’ll talk more about Originals in a in a second just about the benefits of that you’ve got a Child’s Play 3 randomly that’s a that’s one to watch out for is it what else we got on the horror I do love horror Devil’s Rejects great horror film there another original famously haunted Amityville that’s a new one there three from hell I actually might watch that there you go it’s G me reason to watch because I love these films so I’m going to check that out you’ve got sci-fi and fantasy there action oh we can load more let’s have a look what we’ve got we’ve got documentaries I do love a documentary you’ve got a whole different things there as you can see a whole bunch of different content Thrillers got different Thrillers there comedies is there any Originals on the on the comedy side there not on this initial one it doesn’t look like although it’s Creep Show 2 exclusive a ComEd well it says horror comedy I did wonder you got dramas as well that’s all well and good True Crime so yeah this all here you go two be original so again you’ve got a whole mix you’ve got some stuff that’s horror Thriller some action drama a lot of Horrors actually by the looks of it don’t it documentaries as well horror comedy they’ve really lent into the horror with this haven’t they so look you can see this is the original content I guess that tub is going to try and lure you in with when you click on the browse button here you can see that there is a whole you know different list of different genres here collections popular stuff again very similar to how other streaming sites lay out their stuff Netflix Etc in terms of original content so it seems like tub has a fair amount of stuff now some of this they might have originated themselves or develop themselves some of this they’ll claim as original by you know saying it’s maybe like the premiere on 2B but they’ve actually licensed it from a different company all the all of them do this to some degree the thing with original content is it has to be good it’s got to draw people in I do remember back in 2013 that early slate of Netflix originals really captivated people it seems like everyone that was coming out were you know big hits everyone was talking about it these days 10 years on not as much a lot more seems to Fall by the wayside but I think with tub if they can crack through with that that might help them but ultimately where do I think this is going to go because again they’re launching in a very crowded Market because you haven’t just got the paid streamers you’ve got the public service broadcasters as well and I think honestly this first year in particular particular is going to be crucial because they’re going to try and crack in that market they’ve got the advantage over the paid streamers like Netflix and Disney plus because tub’s ad supported content is free they’ve got a You could argue a disadvantage over the public service broadcasters because their ad supported content is also free and they’re more established brands that people are more familiar with and tune into so not only is tub going to have to offer a killer back catalog that people want to watch for free but also these Originals have they cut through the mustard personally at the moment early July I haven’t heard anyone talk about any tub original show but that could all change within a year but this might be a gamble for them because you got to remember this is free they’ll be making their money somewhere but if you’re not making money well the advertisers obviously but if you’re not making money from audiences on a subscription basis that might prove a bit difficult and yes I know Fox Corporation this is Rupert Murdoch we’re talking about he’s a billionaire they’ve got a lot of money they can probably keep this going for a while but I’ll be very interested to see if say in a year’s time if we’re still here talking about two as an active service in the UK I think its us presence is pretty solid and that’s just going to last I mean 80 million active users is something but in the UK I don’t know I don’t know we’ll wait and see let’s see how this first year goes but that is all for this video thank you very much for watching if you enjoyed it please remember to leave a like it does help us out and let me know in the comments down below how do you rate tub’s chances going forward do you think they’re going to stick around with us for quite a while or do you think within 6 months or a year they’re going to fall by the wayside let me know in the comments below if you brand new subscribe to the channel we’d love to have you aboard here with us in the meantime I’ve been Adam Martin from amtv thank you for joining me and I’ll 1. Got it on my firestick. No way they compete atm as most of the content is cheaply made crap. Sure they have a few big films to entice people but it is rubbish for the rest.

    2. This is more of a relaunch as Tubi used to operate in the UK and Europe until 2018, when they had to withdraw from the UK and EU market due to the EU's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) laws. Tubi's not really new in the UK, it's just been absent for 6 years.

    3. To be truthful, I'm more than happy with iPlayer, ITV X, Channel 4, My5 and Discovery+. I'm still not completely sold on Disney+ yet, as I feel I'd only watch American Dad, Family Guy and The Simpsons. For any old skool sitcoms, I've got the DVDs. Love physical media!

    4. I didn't know about this, thanks. Tubi is easy to join (does so on my gmail account without me having to enter in any details) and I've watched a few films. Seems great so far!

    5. I had no idea that TubiTV had launched in the UK, We've been watching TubiTV US, for about a year now as there are TV shows and movies that aren't shown in the UK. Seriously guys, switch your VPN to US and see for yourselves.

    6. Interesting. my main gotos are iPlayer, ITV-X, YouTube (premium). we rent discs from Cinema Paradiso. Disney+ as part of my O2 contract and like loads of the Fox back catalogue. (63yo)

    7. Thank you for making me aware of this. During my study abroad year I watched a lot of good/weird horror movies on there so having it at home would be brilliant.

    8. Will it have YOUNG SHELDON season7? I am SICK of having to wait an exorbitant amount of time to watch US shows. WHY can't HBO MAX be a thing over here?

I'm an unemployable on welfare (because I have a disability), that means I CANNOT get a VPN because DWP can TRACK VPNs and can stop folks from claiming when they need to because they're apparently in the "wrong country" which creates a nightmare situation because you then have to try and prove that you are in UK and are British.

Netflix will get the WWE Network content as of January 2025. I DID have Sky for a while as a kid and I got it back last May after REMOVING myself as a customer from Virgin Media the previous April – they are disgustingly ableist.

We have Pluto TV here which is free.

    9. I think having a free streaming service is a good thing, I've downloaded Tubi to check it out on my smart TV and unfortunately the library of stuff available is very poor, so I'm not likely to use it over even TV channel streaming services like ITVX or BBC iPlayer

    10. I hope it succeeds as I have wanted Tubi to officially launch here for a while. I think once they possibly sort out better licensing deals, we will get better stuff.

My dad isn't much of a streamer but he has had a look at the horror movies on it and has made a list for them.

    11. A big misconception is Tubi is for older people, where the average viewer age is actually around late thirties-early forties. It caters to the much over looked market of "never adopters" who were at some point using TV for free and simply aren't interested in paying subscription after leaving conventional television. A group much larger and overlooked (and coveted by advertisers) than paid providers recognised, and on platform adoption is posing an actual threat to Disney.

It has ads but is completely upfront about it, and is respectful to the viewer when advertising (programs don't start with ads, advertising is brief, major advertisers as to spam/scams, ads seem to come on at appropriate moments in shows, app is stable).

The reality of Tubi is it is a wild west of content, picking up a massive trove of cheap disregarded programs that still have some sort of audience. There is no drawcards here, but cater heavily to the cult and bizarre. (Also hoards of garbage and canceled risqué content deemed unpurchaseable due to conventional streaming's mainstream sanitization). The result is a video store vibe, not just with the age and nature of much of the content (lots of b-grade, straight to video and HBO), but walls of curiosities. "Didn't have the movie we waned. Not to worry, this looks interesting."

    12. I've explored the app, and honestly none of the other streaming apps have anything to worry about, Tubi is just about par but not a challenging alternative to make any significant dent on the streaming landscape…

    13. Murdoch wanted TalkTV as a platform for his own political agenda.
When GBNews appeared, more outspoken and more blatantly right wing, TalkTV because superfluous, but he didn't want to give it up completely, expecting GBNews to collapse imminently.
While that has not happened, it is on life support, propped up by its millionaire owner
