Follow in the chariot tracks of the trailblazing warrior queen Boudicca on this bikepacking trail around Norfolk ( https://www.cyclinguk.org/rebellion-way )

The Rebellion Way is a 232-mile/373km cycling adventure around Norfolk. Meandering along a mix of quiet, mostly flat back roads, byways, cycle paths and bridleways under huge panoramic skies, it’s a fantastic introduction to multi-day, on- and off-road adventuring for anyone.

The name comes from the fact that, while this ancient county is now characterised by a relaxed, timeless, pastoral charm, it has a fascinatingly turbulent history from the Iron Age onwards. Exploring the stories, ancient sites, stunning vistas and thriving wildlife of this unique area enriches every mile of this leisurely but rewarding loop.

The route takes its name from two of Norfolk’s most fascinating rebellions: those of warrior queen Boudicca and Norfolk landowner Robert Kett.

Boudicca has been a famous cultural symbol since she led a revolt against Roman rule almost 2,000 years ago. Heading out of Norwich, the Rebellion Way passes by Venta Icenorum, the capital of Boudicca’s Iceni tribe, where you can see remains of the settlement to this day. The route also takes in sections of the Boudicca Way, where it is accessible by cycle.

On the return leg, the route passes Kett’s Heights, a key location in Kett’s Rebellion. This was a revolt in Norfolk in response to land enclosure. Beginning in Wymondham in July 1549, rebels began to destroy fences placed by wealthy landowners. The group targeted Robert Kett who, instead of fighting the rebels, joined their cause and offered to lead them. The rebellion grew to number 10,000 who marched on Norwich, later storming and taking the city.

Norfolk is sometimes overlooked as a choice for a cycling trip, but once you start exploring, this big-sky county is full of surprises.

A spin along the tranquil lanes reveals quaint timeless villages, peaceful wildlife havens and buckets of quirky charm, from prehistoric mammoths to steam railways.

You’ll find medieval churches full of original carvings and paintings, or ancient barns that are now bat sanctuaries. Glide through the gently rolling, minimal traffic ‘Quiet Lanes’, follow single-track paths through timeless woods, stop to watch swans on secret inland lakes, or ride alongside deer in the evening sun.

hey folks how you doing welcome to bike packing Adventures come and join me for the Rebellion way here in Norfolk the route itself is 373 km long not a lot of climbing that means I don’t know how much less than a thousand who knows little bit of sand a little bit of woods a little bit of a road mix surface that kind of thing just outside ksin parked up some place called lazette straight onto Sand from the first pedal stroke as you can see I’m out on the gravel bike for this one everybody advis me gravel bike don’t come on your mountain bike for us got to be kidding me get on your gravel bike it’s mostly country lanes few Woods quiet ways like this lots of flats is one of cycling UK’s entry level beginner cycling backpacking routes here in the UK something for everyone not too hilly not too demanding nothing technical I’m told weatherwise it’s a bit cloudy at the moment uh it has been it has been cloudy on and off all day I think the technical bit for me will be uh keep keeping up right in the sand I brought the Drone with me hoping to capture lots of the countryside here noric like this right ahead of me what’s this all about don’t mean the sand so here we are first bit of landmark bit of a ruin and probably a good spot to uh put a tent up for the evening or in my case a bivy bag tent stayed at home oh yeah lookus sneak by in there [Music] I did uh ask permission once we could wild Camp here but uh didn’t get any reply so uh yeah I did it anyway I’m joking I haven’t done it yet [Music] [Music] [Music] fishcake chips mushy peas [Music] [Music] nice [Music] bit of a bummer I’m arrived at Hulen Park it’s close it’s close for you do days so I’m going to try and work out how to go around it ah o oo bit of gravel yeah and uh no doubt those of wild camping spots as well no [Music] the rest kind of water went free water so I arrived at Wells Lifeboat Center Route actually takes you up here number locations route takes you to landmarks and confuses me a little bit and uh yeah this is where it’s just taking me right anyway onwards see you can find a shop get us some snack or something look at this perfect Cycle Way [Music] and uh there is well next to Sea it’s is literally well it was next to the Sea it’s one point in history it looks all uh Mossy and overgrown now wow this is a lovely place [Music] all right familiar sight good ride yeah the sound of gravel just left Wells next to the Sea and uh yeah found myself a co-op of course I did no literally of course I did uh got some Pringles on there hopefully I’m pointed in my direction got uh three lers with me and now just looking for somewhere to uh be for York for a few hours so I’m hoping there’re somewhere appropriate soon and apparently I was wrong about the uh water level as well apparently it comes all the way up to the top and uh yeah it’s a very large T has a very large tidle pattern so uh yeah just to show show me at high now oh look at this over there anywh to get over there w got beautiful backd Drop behind me so I finally found myself a spot not too par far past it’s Walsham or waling walington and I found this tree right in front of me corned underneath it and then nearly was actually going to sleep underneath the tree and then I poed me head out at the top and found this uh nice little ground of flattened down we have my ground sheet and uh hopefully pick a good spot have a good night sleep distance-wise probably done a about 95k something like that so yeah I’m pleased with that uh started at 3:00 well actually it’s probably about half three by the time I started and it’s gone it’s just about half n or something like that so I was taking it fairly easy had a good time so far and uh well I’m not sure you see my face I’m going to end here and as you see you in the morning good night good morning folks looking attractive as always in case you’re wondering it’s sleeping [Laughter] liner w wow it’s temp six beautiful night sleep I’ve got some uh I’ve got my buw kit with me so I’m going to get out now and uh pour some water make a cup of coffee oh and as well I find it I brought along uh somewhere hiding oh they’re in here I got some oats as well turns out I forgot to be in a bowl with me so got that qu of I’m going to have coffee and oats the same time I don’t want have to boil the water twice so what I’ve ended up doing uh drank it 3/4 way down and then just of course added the out and I can’t this chocy outat mix oh look at that Lush tastes perfect [Music] [Applause] [Music] so it’s day two of the Rebellion way here in Norfolk just coming up to 8:00 a.m. it’s a beautiful Glorious Day abolutely stunning and I got Tailwind as well so I’m just kind of letting the wind blow me long and really chill out today is going to be a long day I basically all I aiming to do is try and uh find a camp spot as close as possible to set for as Forest as I possibly can that’ll leave me a nice short day for tomorrow but if you know if I CD where which you know ticks all the boxes before then as I’ll talk in and claim [Music] it so I don’t know how many of these bik packing trips have done um I’m I don’t know how many wild camping trips done but if you’re a wild camper yourself and you’re watching this or you’re just thinking about getting into it there’s always uh following morning when you’re looking into the trees going I could have had that oh that’s better than uh you know where I slept last night or I’m glad I didn’t sleep there that kind of thing well there’s a name for that and I call it here’s what you could have won having some Woods at the moment looking across and I like loads of room ample space here’s what I could have won no matter how many times I tried going different places I never find the perfect spot [Music] [Music] hello they’ve got some restoration work to do there aren’t they [Music] so I’m here at northex Premier Seaside Town that’s what the sign says not so sure about the beach where’s the sand [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hello [Music] [Applause] [Music] well just going into the uh mid evening part it’s about half eight I think maybe qu to 9 just left dis I think must be the first time I’ve dipped into uh suffk lots of pink buildings which usually means you in suffk don’t know why probably something to do with the pigs I think anyway so I’m heading west now the uh spot where I’m going to be camping hopefully he’s not too far away I’m going to definitely stop quite early today foodwise I went to a pizza shop at a 9 in pizza I’ll tell you what they’re small was about right thing crust um got some Pringles again for the uh second evening on a row got my beer ready wherever I do Camp it’s going to leave me about 100 km to do on the final day arrived at my Camp spot tell you what it always look super bright it’s not that super bright anyway I’m here at uh I think it was said wall cut common just having a good old mooch around uh trying to find perfect spot so I’m just going to clear some leaves and get myself down here you see I got my nice prop for my bike for fancy doing some mountain bike stuff or going on the swing I’ve got some uh entertainment over there yeah so I’m going to uh just get changed w’t set up camp just yet um but yeah get changed at a second gear this that’s the last tip I’ll leave you before I see you again in the morning um you know if you do backpacking adventures and trips just like I do cycle touring whatever you like to call it always get out your cycling gear uh unless it’s a race but if and I’d always advise getting out of it it just feels better to get out of the clothes that you’ve been riding with all day long anyway I’m going to set Camp soon and I’ll catch you in the [Music] morning good morning folks it’s a morning of the chocolate oats it’s beautiful morning as well beautiful surroundings the weather’s a bit dull at the moment the sun’s down out but uh yeah just been enjoying some uh B sick pack of Bio I don’t want to carry everywhere so I’m eating eating a lot of food just to get started so I’m going to finish enjoying this it’s about 100K today so stick around and watch me ride the final day of the Rebellion way [Music] it’s [Music] spitting I bumped into another Rider Bob Bo he was riding the road version of the of the wolf way or making his own up or something I don’t know uh we HD under a tree for about 5 minutes having a chat and I was like got to go get warmed up again saw a break went for it as I’m sure probably told you already I do have a r Jack with me however I didn’t expect it raining today so I buried it right underneath my uh well everything think in the tail feed so unless it starts pissing down I’m just going to keep on pedaling hope that sun comes out I’m sure if it does it’ll just dry things straight away [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah I’m a go time fford on one of the many uh Sandy tracks through the woods sometimes it’s easier just to get off and uh walk you know I’m not on a mountain bike even with uh 45 cm cenm be awesome won it 45 mm tires you know it’s slipping sliding everywhere might as well walk walk bits I over bits you know I’m just going to mix it up a little bit I’m a rush got all day I have no problems walking all day long while I’ve versed at doing that if I need to as long as you’re making forward motion just don’t get stressed out about it it’s these parts of the mot that you remember the most even though you’re like why do they put it in in the moment you like question it you think you call them on all the names under the sun people design these routs but it’s what makes them memorable if it was too easy you’d soon forget it oh look at that you fford come out the other side looks like it’s going to be dry for the rest of the day I’m on to the uh tank section I should call it that there’s a fresh car trucks [Music] oh [Music] though it seems like I’m riding off road at the moment the section’s really short and sweet and quite varied as well keeps it interesting never seem to be on it too long if you watched the rest of the video and haven’t jumped ahead you would have saw that much of the route was on Tac and Road not much in the way gravel in Woodland so this is an nice this is a nice chain from you know where I started at Kings Lin ordinarily if you just following the route Fisher route from start that would be norch and you know you’d have had all this nice Woodland and off Offroad country bit and then you would have had uh you know the other 2/3 so for me this is like finishing off really nicely I do like a good Woodland I’m glad I did it this way around I’m just getting all the best bits towards the end which is kind of what you want on a cycling tour having said that if the we weather was not so C I can imagine the opposite would be true it’s going around Linford water smell the lavender it’s really strong it’s beautiful smell n [Music] [Music] n [Music] m [Music] [Music] [Music] four Court banquet just check the rainfall radar again it’s going to rain a little while for about half an hour stops to swaen which means pretty close to finishing now just arrived at Clea it’s just out raining not sure I want to you can’t see on camera but that’s uh pretty steep maybe I’ll take the long way around if I the car park it’s come tight out the way and that’s what it is another potential bivy spot if you arrived at the right time loads of places so just taking a quick walk around we got the second curon wall built circuit 1150 yep W pass the first one already over there bought 10 years earlier I didn’t just build it all in one go and then there’s uh something going on down there oh [Applause] [Music] bit wet that’s good thing about this route it’s not really s much the way it puddles he not in the off off-road sections anyway it’s been uh really good nice and dry call me wor but I barely try to ride on sand on a gravel bike slip slide everywhere maybe if want on a fully loaded bike I’d give it a go but uh yeah don’t want to fall I shouldn’t be surprised that I’m finished on and I started near Sand so makes sense I’ll finish near Sand thing is only just remembered moments ago when I saw it also apart from the sand if you’ve never watched the channel before you uh of course W is but I’ll tell you now whenever I do these back packing trips wherever part the car there’s always a hill I never park on the flat and this is a this is again same again it’s almost like I seek out a car park on the toway hill and put my you know Park in there but sheer coincidence right let’s get back on the bike and make way to the uh brow of the Hill well that’s it you might see the bik behind me back at the van um what I did is I just kept riding riding refused to look at the screen to see how far I went and then T lo and behold next Corner the van I came this amazing surprise anyway um yeah great route really love that uh big shout to whoever put the route together I think the name’s Sharon is it Colton yeah brilliant route uh really loved it um it just made want to come back and discover more gravel cuz there wasn’t that much gravel in it cuz it’s not a gravel route uh it’s you know so everybody can ride it’s had a bit of everything in it Woodland gravel Trails you know overgrown Parts cycleways bit quite a bit of time um like I said make sure to go back and see what is here in Norfolk and suffk as well wenten in suffk earlier hope you enjoyed watching this folks as much as ever enjoy riding it have you done the ring way let me know down in the uh comments below what did you think to the route is anything you didn’t like is anything you found was absolutely amazing you know what to do get involved down below and if you have enjoyed watching this video give it a thumbs up and if you’re already subscribed to the channel now might be the time right I’ll see you in the next bike packing Adventure soon bye-bye for

    1. Brought back some great memories of when I rode this in May this year, starting from Thetford. Looks like you had some much better weather than me; luckily I'd opted for hotels, don't like to even think about wild camping in heavy rain
