Crossing Europe – Day 7

We have to book it today, as a friend is offering me a free AirBnB, but it is only available tomorrow. So we need to go ~120 miles if we want to be able to get that bathtub + washer combo.

good morning everybody look at this holy this place is I also didn’t hear any mosquitoes last night I think I might be safe I have completely killed both of the USB batteries so we’ve done everything we can to give our bike as much range as possible good morning everybody yeah there are absolutely no mosquitoes here okay let’s go ahead and tear this campsite down and get going because we have a lot of miles we need to travel today we actually need to travel farther today than we have ever done ever before we need to go at least 120 Mi so the thing is one of my fans somebody in my audience somebody who watches my videos they saw that I’m going to Vienna and they have an Airbnb there so they offered to let me stay in their Airbnb all I need to do is pay the cleaning fee the thing is it’s only available tomorrow so I need to get to Vienna tomorrow and that’s still 120 M away so we need to absolutely book it if we want to be able to get a super cheap abmb it has a bathtub it has a washing machine getting this Airbnb is basically everything we need right now also I want to point out there is a big difference between somebody offering a free Airbnb that’s completely like by myself versus you guys offering to let me sleep on your couch I get a whole bunch of messages from people saying like oh hey you’re in my area come sleep on my couch I’ll give it to you for free I’m sorry I’m I’m not going to do that I’m not going to do that God damn I found just the perfect campsite it is gorgeous outside it didn’t rain it looks like it might rain soon but there’s no mosquitoes if I wasn’t in a rush to leave I would sit here and chill for a little bit crack open my book but we got to go where are you at yes let’s deflate the bed still hasn’t popped yet yet so I’m happy I was expecting last night to be its last night just because we’re sleeping on rough terrain come on one 2 three and four I will go ahead and vacuum out my tent really quick done okay Camp is put away let’s go see if we can’t hit 125 miles in a single day now we only have two bars on the battery which means we have somewhere in the neighborhood of like 25 to 40% capacity left we can’t just try to get all 125 miles at the start we are in a city called zlin right now and it looks like it’s big enough to actually support uh cafes let’s see what we can find I don’t really see any foot traffic so it’s possible that they’re closed on Sundays like all the other stupid European countries this intersection closed opens at 8:00 a.m. closed opens at 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. God damn it now we’re going to end up wasting a bunch of time while we just drive around waiting for stuff to open you know what is open though McDonald’s 4 miles away at is a wayp point yes McDonald’s just incredibly useful having to wait until 11:00 a.m. to charge the batteries no thank you then turn right oh yeah it is definitely going to rain we’re only 2 miles away from McDonald’s though so we should be inside when it does yeah everything is closed right now except McDonald’s 49 ladies and gentlemen welcome to the crown jewel of American fast food franchises mck Donald’s I’m just going to leave the bike here in the parking lot and we got our Outlets okay we got food we got drinks we’ll be here for like 4S hour so we’ll get out of here at like 11 a.m. to start riding again so even though the back screen of my GoPro is completely up because it’s got this screen on the front right there you can see that I can actually still touch it the digitizer still works so I can still like control the camera and then look at what it’s actually seeing from that front screen right there that’s kind of useful oh my God the McDonald’s here just gave me a free refill they didn’t need to they had no obligation to do that at all but they did how sweet is that I’ve literally never had a European McDonald’s give me free refills like this this is I think I’ve been here for too long maybe that was their way of like trying to kick me out I don’t know video is uploaded we are good to go no like I’ve had McDonald’s like offer free refills before but I’ve never had somebody like come up and bring it to me themsel they just walked by noticed that I’ve been sitting here for a while saw my receipt and then they went and got me another one crazy so this despite how nasty the clouds look Google says it’s not going to rain until 8:00 p.m. so that means we’ve got like 8 hours of riding we can do and we might be able to avoid the storm altogether if we rode far [Music] [Music] enough we are going to make a stop and get some supplies at this intersection go straight on to Long dist cycle Pepsi is just significantly cheaper than Coca-Cola oh this looks interesting waffle with chocolate thank you for the people that say that I don’t eat enough Local Foods yooo is a local food okay so the picture shows more chocolate than what is actually here but it’s not great yeah I would not purchase this again now turn left then keep right I think I found a plain graveyard check Air Force huh and this intersection go straight onto Cycle Way in 400 ft turn and continue on cycle way I just realized I should probably put sun screen on it was cloudy earlier so I didn’t even think about [Applause] it so I’m reading the comments of yesterday’s video and people are upset that I did not know that it was called czechia um but I want to point out if you go to America and you ask any American to point out czechia on a map they’ll look at you and ask what the is a czechia you might have better luck if you call it the Czech Republic they might be able to like generally point to Europe somewhere but yeah I’ve never heard of czechia I’ve heard of chia I thought that was like a different name for it in the same way that like ke and Kiev have different names for the same place but apparently Chia is some place in Europe um I have heard of Czechoslovakia I’m pretty sure that’s the same thing because there is Slovakia next to us so I’m pretty sure that they just stopped being friends at some point and now we’ve got czechia and Slovakia I do have some advice for any uh cians for any cians who wish that their country was more well-known um you guys should think about starting the next World War or maybe decapitate some of your monarchs and a guillotine something like that like that’s actually the only reason I know about Austria because Austria uh had their like prime minister or something get assassinated to start World War I that’s it that’s oh and Hitler was from Austria that’s that is my extent of knowledge on Austria okay we are protected from cancer it feels like every mile there’s another city or another small town like this all of them are super bunched up close together welcome to Slovakia woo 700 continue on body 950 F left on body 1300t right onto Hol I don’t like that I hope my app is is not sending me into a dead end I was wrong it is closed come on come on there we go follow this way for 450 ft okay well we got through so that’s cool just a sec I’m curious if straight on to I’m curious if Slovakia is cheaper than czechia in terms of like Hotel pricing uh you could get a hostel for $32 a night um a private room for $66 so it’s like half the price but it’s still pretty expensive this is like America pricing this is these are the kinds of prices you would find in America yeah private room $79 61 $121 I was just curious we can get back on the road it looks like we’re done with the fun bike [Music] paths maybe there’s a gas station that’s open that we can charge in it is not a gas station but I did find a restaurant I wonder if they’re open I’m not super optimistic but but if this doesn’t work we can just use the solar panel I love this sticker so much um I need a a plug is there a you speak English um she said they have no Outlets I feel like I’m back in Bulgaria take the next right I just realized I don’t even know what currency they use in this country I’m pretty sure they don’t use Euros um I learned that the other place we were in czechia they use crowns that’s what they call their money okay this feels like a very fancy restaurant yeah I don’t even feel comfortable being here especially carrying multiple battery packs in Google map says there is a restaurant across the Street it looks like it’s an outdoor dining place so I probably won’t find an outlet it has a great view though no Outlets though what about their competitor right next door probably same situation yeah check it out the beach has a public shower wish I would have known about that yesterday okay let’s go set up the solar panel I feel defeated wait a minute I see something here it’s not on Google Maps it’s called baring and Cafe huh let’s go check it out it’s right next to fancy pizza place perfect yep they take cards they got a cappuccino ready for me and we can actually sit outside while we charge today that’s honestly rare I’m going to go grab the bike I feel less defeated I think I got to fix my kickstand again my bike is leaning farther than it should oo that’s hot no actually I don’t want my laptop I want my book they’re right there char the coffee cost €2.4 okay we’ve been here for like 2 hours they are not fully charged but we’ve only got 2 hours of daylight left so we’re going to head out we have like 55 miles before we get to Vienna we’re almost there honestly I bet that we can make it there on this charge just a sec we got to stop and do some bike maintenance you see how my uh mirror is falling off right there I got to screw this in tighter where’s my little wrench at here we go there’s a little screw in there uh I could show you that okay actually it I will show you how this works how the mirror actually holds itself in place so come on there’s mosquitoes flying around my head I don’t like it you see there’s a hole p in basically all of your handlebars and there’s a thing right here you see there’s a rubber gasket when you twist this bolt it pulls This Together which causes the rubber gasket to expand basically it holds itself in place with friction I’m not sure if that made sense bugs go away Jesus Christ so we just take this twist it and it will cause that rubber gasket to expand and you can see this is held in place very firmly now I just wanted to fix my mirror [Applause] we might set a new record today we’ve already gone 70 miles and we got full batteries and daylight we might break 100 miles that’s going to be the goal we’re going to go for 110 miles hey definitely looks like rain and I don’t think we’re going to be able to outrun [Music] [Applause] it it’s starting to rain Google says it’s not supposed to start raining really hard until 900 p.m. so we still have like an hour and a half I hope it settles down so we can find a campsite actually if I had to bet I would say it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better we need to set up camp immediately that means we’re going down weird dirt roads hoping to find a spot I didn’t find a campsite but I found shelter oh and I found water I don’t know if I trust that water that’s not coming from rocks I’m not going to drink that water but I will chill here I am genuinely curious if I decided to set my tent up right here inside the Pavilion on the concrete do you think anybody would have a problem with that do you think anybody would even find me because that’s essentially what this comes down to whether it’s legal or not is not as big of an issue as are we hidden now because if we’re by ourselves laws don’t really exist mosquitoes oh I see the sun coming out that doesn’t necessarily mean the rain is going to stop but I do see sunlight you know what honestly it I don’t know whether we’re allowed to or not but I’m going to start prepping the area because if we’re stuck here that’s just what we’re going to do I can make myself mosquito proof well you know mostly mosquito proof go away bug God damn it okay there we go seriously this is is better than mosquito repellent I think the rain is settling down so we can find a proper campsite Google says it will start pouring at 9: we’re now outside city limit so we have a lot more flexibility I see a path right here let’s check it out tour cannot be adjusted take a look at the map the tour is 200 ft behind you where the heck am I what is this I have no idea what this is well whatever that stuff is I don’t think it matters because I think that we can camp right there stand up I need to work on my kickstand the bolts are getting loose again yeah I think that we can just Camp right here make sure we got a flat surface no broken glass no metal things poking up we did not get 100 miles today because of the rain I’m a little bit disappointed we are not going to stake it to the ground first instead what we’re going to do is we’re going to get the rain fly on it because I don’t want the inside of the tent getting [Applause] wet bugs go away just realize my tent is backwards I want my tent facing that direction okay now the tent fly just so we have a dry space okay now we have a place to keep things dry let’s get the sleeping bag in there all of the important things that we don’t want to get wet go in there okay mosquitoes okay we’ve got a functional uh tent should keep us safe from the rain let’s get all of the things that we don’t want to get wet what do we I think this is empty oh I’ve got a Pepsi in here cool we can drink that um backpack with all my electronics that’s got to come we must be near some stagnant water or because there are so many more mosquitoes here than there were earlier my steaks aren’t staying in the ground and I don’t have a rock to pound them in there’s n enough room in here it’s hot it’s humid it’s wet come on I don’t have my fan anymore so I’m just going to live with this oh my God in such a bad mood no and there’s mosquitoes everywhere okay first thing we got to do investigate the tent see if any mosquitoes were able to get in and then smack them if they did okay the inside of the tent is now safe from water and from mosquitoes but now it’s super moist in here and hum humid so we’re going to have to open this up to let some air out or let some air in and we got to keep the mosquitoes out I’m going to lose my what I’m not going to do is I’m not going to inflate the bed or take the sleeping bag out until it’s after dark and I know that nobody’s going to kick us out because I did just kind of go down a dirt road and there’s asphalt right there so it’s entirely possible that the farmer that has those little manure piles will come up here and be like yo get off my property oh look at this I was wrong a mosquito did get in here he got on on my jacket you don’t get to stay in here buddy we made it 84 miles today not we did not we did not break the record at over 100 we are almost into Austria though I think we’ve got like 40 miles to go and then we’re in Vienna it I’m not leaving this is where we’re sleeping tonight yep the bed got a little bit wet while I was sitting there happens it is a little bit on Ry to try to do this inside the tent but we’ll make it work and then I’ll take this bag put the bag like this you can see here that a whole bunch of bugs mosquitoes flies they flew in here and now they’re hiding in my tent from the rain I am no bugs piece it just got real dark so I can’t decide whether I want to put this up and roll it up so I get more air flow or if I want to close it keep myself safe from the rain but then it’ll be super hot and humid in here um up until it starts pouring I will just flip this up like that come on stay up there we go like that and then once it really does start raining we can close it up okay based on the messages I’m getting on Instagram I want to clarify I could easily book a room if I wanted to I could just pay the money and go sleep in a warm place I’m not doing that because this is a protest I’m not going to pay $120 for a room that cost me $15 last week like the prices here are too expensive so I’m not just going to like conform and pay their price I’m not going to do that this is this is a protest holy it is 900 p.m. right now Google hit it nail on the head I guess it’s time to close her up I’m sure the gopro’s uh video quality has started to degrade because these cameras are trash at night no so I was thinking about this I could go to Vienna and I could get another GoPro that’s identical to this one but um GoPro isn’t like the market leader that it used to be I think I might want to look at other action cameras things that’ll perform better at dark because that’s the biggest weakness to these cameras is if I wake up too early I can’t film if I stay up too late I can’t film if I’m in a house I probably can’t film I need something that has better low light performance I do need to consider that a lot of my scripts that work with my automated editing are specific for GoPro so I might need to rework some of those [Applause] scrips okay so the rain seems to have stopped at least temporarily pretty sure bug just got in but you’ll notice how the inside of the rainfly is really wet I think that I need to respray that waterproofing on this too because uh that should be dry the inside of this should be dry holy like four mosquitoes got in here and like the 3 seconds it took me to put that up they’re everywhere out there I can definitely hear something out there I don’t want to open this and subject myself to mosquitoes but I don’t have a choice I’m pretty sure they don’t have any wild animals here in Europe or at least anything like devastatingly dangerous probably a dog or a cat or a donkey or some farm animal you see that that is an absolutely massive slug right there I came here because of the water on the top of my tent and there’s a whole bunch of mosquitoes trapped up there they can like feel my breath coming up and so they go to the top of the tent and they get stuck up there that slug though holy oh my God there is another slug I think that they’re trying to drink like I think that they’re they’re drinking the water that’s dripping off the edge of my tent which just goes back to there should not be water on the inside of my tent lid like there should not be water there but it’s not dripping on me probably because the Slugs drinking it so I guess I’m okay
