welcome back to the Wild Ones Pro show we have Tony with us in the building what’s happening Tony I’m buzzing to be back four man’s loss another man’s G so well we are pleased to have Tony here this does lead us straight into our first fluff up of the day so we were meant to have EF nutritionist will ging with us but unfortunately he’s ill so uh Tony subbed in at very short notice very thankfully very kindly as well so thank you for that giving up your week again for us I’ve been out on the bike this morning so I’m pretty relaxed pretty happy to be here again and going out on the beers later I’m heading in Newcastle to watch the England gear producer Emily’s here of course but is also ill I am yes I’m breathing a little bit like Darth Vader at the moment so I’m going to turn my mic down while I’m not speaking I’m full of caffeine and painkillers uh Jimmy you might be getting ill too probably yes so um will we have to cancel the show at some point hopefully not uh we get Monday off as a rest day we’re going to take that off and hopefully we can make it till then rest and recover it’s you know we’re at our Peak Physical performance just like the pros doing this so obviously it can affect the immune system and illness can creep in but uh we’re fighting we’re keeping going aren’t we well it’s it’s either that or Chris Hall showed up with a bug and spread it to all of us potentially yeah hopefully it doesn’t rip through the whole te we did inform Tony and give him the choice not to come and he did still decide to so thank you Tony he loves it too much well actually to quote he said The Show Must Go On It must and I’m not made of sugar so uh back to or to to business even what happened in today’s stage so a breakaway formed basically from the start it slowly thinned out leaving just one man the man of the moment Jonas abrahamson out on a solo Breakaway for the majority of the race he picked up some more King of the mountain Point securing the jersey for another stage and he was eventually caught by the pelaton with about 15 km to go it came down to a Sprint finish that saw green jersey holder bam gay take his second stage win what a legend boom he’s absolutely crushing it this year which one both of them both of them actually to be honest um I was going to say is Bam gay everyone’s new favorite Rider but abrahamson 2 they have really shown up this year yeah they’ve definitely been like the men of the tour so far but I did call the gai win would come again you did yeah you’re right and the way he’s going I’m I’m not going to rule him out for some more yeah I think you’ll get probably another at least another one you could say he’s the new Mark Cavendish what Bal statement maybe the next Eddie mkss so one week ago errea literally had no stage winners and now they have one person with two- stage win so I’m sure he’s going to be welcomed home to a hero’s welcome you know like when like a football team wins the FA Cup and they get a open top double decker bus and T the town by day they can have a national holiday in his name also inter Marti Wy have provided some impressive support for him he’s he’s had sort of three-man lead out trains on a number of occasions to get him there oh they’ve definitely just gone all in with with like trying to secure stage wins with him and uh holding that green jersey to be fair they’ve done a great job they really have they really really have because like you you would probably expect a team a as their scale to not be as competitive as they has been have been especially considering they’re up against teams that have got significantly bigger budgets and riders that have much bigger reputations um so yeah it’s it’s amazing to see and I’m really excited to keep following Gay’s journey and and see see where it goes I think he’s going to be around for a long time potentially I do think he will take the green jersey yeah I think he’ll hold on to that as long as he continues to be fit and healthy uh it was interesting to see the intermediate Sprint when gar took I think he took second place and the other wanty Rider forced the yasper Phillips into third or fourth fourth place which meant he got no no points so he’s they’re definitely trying to soak up all the points they can to secure the that green jersey for as long as they can I’m I’m pretty sure currently points wise he’s Miles Ahead as well yeah so yeah it’s it’s it’d be great to see him take take the green well speaking of yasper Phillipson he missed out on a stage win again didn’t he and I had a little look and I noticed an interview with him after the fine that he got and he said after what happened on Thursday I do feel targeted much worse things have happened in the past he said I know I shouldn’t tents up during the upcoming Sprint opportunities but that’s easier said than done up until now I’ve been sprinting purely on Instinct I’m afraid that something like that will be more difficult and that I’ll have to be more aware of my movements during such a final Sprint so do we think that he’s changing his tactics here or is it just that he just can’t make it to the line it’s a tough one because it it does feel like it’s definitely gotten to his head but he hasn’t uh shown great form no he he was he was performing the same before he got that warning as well to be fair yeah I think his format that he’s brought into the tour is I don’t think he’s firing I don’t think he’s quite firing like he has done in the past maybe that’s meaning he’s taken a few more risks but in this in the stages so far nothing stood out to me that makes them look any more dangerous than any other Riders I just really think they’re trying to sanitize the Sprints the look like sprinting is dangerous it’s close it’s like it’s human nature that they’re going to switch and come off lines at times so yeah I just really don’t think he’s done that much wrong and yeah it’s a shame CU like I say sprinting is just a dangerous game you make a good point there Tony it you could argue that because his sprinting technique was really highlighted in the Netflix documentary that could it does raise it above and and make it it puts a magnifying glass on it doesn’t it and potentially that’s why we’re seeing things happen this year I think he is being punished partly now for things that haven’t been dealt with in the past yeah just the stigma of This yasper Disaster thing it’s sort of sticking to him now isn’t it it’s not it’s not nice to see but it’s an interesting point because it I hadn’t considered that actually it might be influenced by the Netflix documentary and we’re also seeing things like where we’re getting some stuff on the team radios where even the commentators are saying like oh I wonder if that’s for the Netflix documentary Y is actually the Netflix thing really having an influence on how things are going down now I hope not but perhaps I can see why it would who knows I have one fact on abrahamson as well he has held the poker dot Jersey since stage one he’s 13 points ahead of paga which means he’ll now keep it until stage 10 because tomorrow only has four Sprint points and the day after has none it’s been 40 years since a rider kept the poker dot jersey for the first 10 stages of the race he’s a brute um like we said gay and ABR Hansson are currently my two favorite Riders and they’re both on bikes that I never thought I would like but now I want to try a dare bike in other news mads pedison is out of the tour so he was a forcer abandon due to his injuries that he picked up when he crashed in stage five little Trex said that due to the lack of fractures they thought he’d be able to recover while riding but he’s in pain and can’t move his shoulder properly um I saw an interview with him where he was saying that he absolutely categorically wants to win at the Olympics so he doesn’t see the point in finishing the tour if he knows he’s uncomfortable and is not going to be competitive he’d rather pull himself out of the team start his recovery process and get himself ready for the Olympics so that’s what he’s going to focus on seems like the wise thing to do if he if he really thinks he’s in with a chance at winning Olympic gold uh sort of what’s the point of just getting round the two of the France because it it feels he’s injured enough that it feels like it’s just like a box ticking exercise doesn’t it completed the tour 2024 and absolutely hated every moment of it because I because I was in so much pain kind of thing yeah it’s just no point also Julian Bernard who had the crowd roaring yesterday has been fined for kissing his wife so the UCI find him 200 Franks which is £174 their reason unseemly or inappropriate behavior during the race and damage to the image of the sport according to the jury’s report but he had the best response I’m willing to pay 200 Swiss Franks every day and relive that moment I think this decision by the UCI was a particularly unpopular one if you look on social media I totally get why stopping in the middle of the road on a time trial where there’s the rider behind you is potentially dangerous but the UCI didn’t reference that once I believe in their decision to find him and they just said that it was bad for the image of the sport that’s outrageous just seems ridiculous it like it it humanizes these Elite athletes and go actually they’re just normal people they’re just really really good riding through his home Village it’s that you know it’s it’s the stuff of Dreams isn’t it you’re riding the two of France through your horn village with your wife and your family there it’s yeah you’re going to stop you hundreds of people that you know yeah I do think though that these UCI rules are pretty black and white they have to sort of follow the letter of the law with these kind of things and I don’t think there’s much room for human discretion but 174 quid to the team I imagine it just gets absorbed I think that they they probably have a budget for these kind of finds and although this is a little bit unorthodox it got them some good air time and it’s something that we’ll probably remember for a while so maybe worth it for them well I I I think for me the only problem is that they said that it is a damage to the image of the sport and it absolutely is not no totally has done no damage to the sport whatsoever you I think the UCI probably made some worse decisions that’s done more damage let’s be honest so there’s also some very sad news coming out of the tour of Austria today 25-year-old Norwegian Rider Andre d has being killed in a crash on one of the descents Andre was a promising upand cominging Rider who had won seven races this year and was rumored to be moving to the World Tour next year so our condolences go out to his friends and family shall we have a look at what’s coming up tomorrow let’s do it Jimmy so first of all we’ve got stage n of the to of France which is 199 km with 2,000 M of climbing there are four Cat four climbs and an intermediate Sprint at 83.5 km it has been dubbed the most controversial stage of this year’s tour because it has a total of 32.3 KM of gravel or white tracks as they are also known as um across 14 sectors the longest sector is 4.3 km long and the last sector is just 6 km from the finish some people think that this stage is needlessly dangerous Vima Lisa bike boss called it unnecessary and said it increases the chance of bad luck Pacha called it risky but says they take risks every day anyway yeah I think you could ask why do they include these kind of stages in the tour to France considering that there’s dislike from the teams so why do they include them well it’s exciting isn’t it it’s it’s for entertainment it’s for viewers it’s so we want drama we want action we want things to happen we don’t want 180 km of boring flat roads where no one really cares and then a two second Sprint at the end we want five hours of action and I think I actually think if there’s if there is a sta any stage of this year’s tour that you going to watch all of tomorrow’s stage is the one for that to be because it promises just absolute Carnage yeah it should be really really good I think uh when you you look at stages like well you look at Classics like St Yani I know it’s not class as a proper classic but it is in my eyes uh it’s always great racing just that that added element of risk the the crashes punctures it’s just going to make the whole thing more and more of a drama so yeah I’m quite excited about this stage so so the strata banche is 184 km single day race which has a whopping 63 km of gravel this year it was won by paga where he took he led for eight 80 km There Was 80 km break and then he won for that reason I think that is a fantastic case study for why paga is my favorite for tomorrow’s stage but the year before Tom Pitcock won and he’s also riding we’re always about P when you’re here my argument is Tom’s it’s got to be Tom tomorrow he eased up in the time trial seemed like he just cruise through the time trial he was nowhere to be seen to D either so I think he’s rested ready I don’t mean be rude Tony but it seems like he’s been resting for the whole tour so far yeah I just keep if I just keep seeing he’s going to win he’s going to win obviously isn’t he’s got to win something I do think you’re on to something though it is suiting the classics Riders is Van art holding back because he wants to have a dig at this is pidcock like you say doing the same vaner is basically not been seen at all either he wasn’t helping philipsson in the Sprint today are they all saving themselves for tomorrow I kind of hope so cuz that would be a hell of a hell of race if if that’s the case yeah if all all but I don’t think pagat will get involved I think he’ll he’ll race quite sensibly but when you’re talking about Tom pitcock vaner paol vaner yeah there’s any amount of other Classics Riders racing yeah I think there could be fireworks for the stage win the the challenge to that is for paga he wants to protect his yellow Jersey the safest place to be is 10 km off the front true but that’s a lot of energy he’s going to waste it which is going to catch up with him but it could also be it could be an opportunity for him to take a big chunk of time out of the other GC contenders to be fair I hadn’t thought about it like that yeah going into a rest day as well yeah yeah no uh I haven’t really thought about it like that it’s not a bad shout it’s risky but yeah you might do well to quote him as I did a moment ago it’s risky but they take risks every day anyway it’d be an interesting thing to watch how vagle reacts because so far what we’ve seen is they are stuck to each other like glue but I don’t know if we’d see Vago chase down in that scenario it it is an interesting one Jimmy I think the the risk is not only crashes but also on those sort of pebble roads you’re going to get a lot of dust flying up which then impedes your visibility as well so really the pointy end is is a good position to be plus punctures likely for lots of punctures which also then means you want to be as far forward as possible to give yourself a better chance of getting it fixed and back onto the road without being off the back I’m not quite too sure with vinegod of his sort of experience with cobbles and gravel I don’t know too much about him has he ever ridden a classic it doesn’t doesn’t strike as as he ridden any I think that yonas and visma hate these type of races which is why the boss is calling it unnecessary I think he looks this it’s outside of their control there’s too much going on that they can’t like micromanage in terms of like how things are done I think they are terrified by this stage and they are expecting to lose time but it’s definitely going to be worth watching yeah 100% it’s going to yeah it’s definitely going to be one of the stages that’s well worth watching which is exactly why they planned it like that do you think that we’ll see any sort of changes of equipment in this race probably not so a lot of the time now the they’re using pretty much the same bikes on the classics perhaps with slightly bigger tires but they’re basically racing on 30s now anywhere I guess Tony will have a better idea I think they’ll go wider tires definitely think the wider tires some of the Riders the ones who are actually going for the stage win might put a little bit more thought and effort into it but yeah definitely tomorrow there will be riding wider tires what do you what do you think they’ll ride up to though it’ll still pretty narrow 32s maybe yeah uh some Riders yeah I don’t think that I don’t think there’s any real need to go any bigger than a 32 but I don’t know how rough these gravel tracks are I think they were described as uh meticulously um not manicured I think they’re going to be lovely yeah I mean I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them before and yeah I think 32s would get you round there might be the odd one or two riders that run a slightly wider Tire maybe squeezing a 34 in but there’s very very few race bikes that you can get them in tomorrow also marks the start of the women zuro de Italia it’s a total of eight stages finishing on the fourth of July it’s been eight years since a rider other than aname van vuon or Anna van and Brean have won the race but both Riders are now retired so 2024 will see a new Champion bookie’s favorites are Alisa Longo borghini Gia rolini or L keki stage one is a 15.7 km time trial it’s pretty flat I’m expecting it to be really fast current world TT Champion Khloe diger isn’t racing as she’s focusing on the Olympics so I’m expecting to see Grace Brown uh second at the worlds and the current Australian time trial Champion take the top step we should also keep a li an eye on borghini and keki yes it’ll be broadcast live on Euros sport Ry sport floor bikes and Max if you want to watch along with us Tony we were discussing this beforehand it starts with a TT stage you said you like a prologue yeah the the two the Frances always used to start with a prolog and I find them quite exciting like the shorter time trial to start with that’s yeah it just makes it quite it’s a nice start to the race uh and it also just gives them the chance to the time trial is to Showcase what they can do but it’s also in these shorter time trials some of the sprinters and people like like they can normally turn out quite a decent ride so yeah I think it could be wide open but yeah I’m a massive fan of starting grand Tours with prologs there’s not enough of that these days it’s a tough one because it’s short enough that if you go absolute all out on it you’re going to do some damage so it would be interesting to see how hard they do go on it it’s just under 10 miles that’s like it’s going to be fast it’s going to be ridiculously fast I mean you’re probably talking well below 20 like 20 minutes with seven stages to follow I would definitely be holding a lot back yeah but I do think the the r leaders will be strong enough and they’ll be wanting to show basically they’ be wanting to get that Jersey early doors yeah uh and then control the race from there that’s all for today we’ll be back tomorrow provided Emily and myself haven’t fallen completely to the lury um see you tomorrow hopefully at the sameish time andtony will be back with us yeah might just be me if youed two don’t turn up so you’ll at least see Tony tomorrow maybe well Tony keep yourself right tonight when you’re out on the town yeah I’ll be good boy see you later see you then bye bye

    1. Shame on you for trying to blame Philipsen's 100% appropriate and justified relegation on bad exposure from Netflix, and claiming it wasn't justified, just him being penalized after the fact for last year. 100% rubbish. The guy repeatedly chops people to gain advantage. It's cynical and intentional. Worse, it's a deliberate tactic employed with the full support and encouragement from Alpecin management who does not care who they screw or hurt so long as they get away with it and win. They're on the record as saying they consider the slap on the wrist penalties to have zero persuasive impact or effect on their behavior. If the UCI wanted to introduce some actual justice, they'd send Philipsen home and suspend his racing license until Mads Pedersen is able to return to racing.

    2. Jasper needs to stop whining when he's the one causing the problems. Also, he's doing a great Wout impression, finishing second in the sprint nearly every time. First Cav beats him, then Bini twice. It's karma Jasper, stop endangering your fellow cyclists.

    3. They're including gravel sections because they don't care about the riders, they only care about profits. It's like Nascar, people watch it for the wrecks. So the Tour has now decided to include the gravel sections to get more people to watch hoping there'll be wrecks. Insanity. It's a road race, keep it on the tarmac.

    4. Not that this works for riders trying to win stages, but a great place to be on gravel is also at the back. I did Unbound 200 this year, and coming in at about 16 hours meant that the faster riders cleared the worst of the pointy rocks out of the way for me 😂

    5. South London here 😅 thank you for your honest review
But talking about the cry baby Jasper , Tony .. maybe you lot can’t say it in your podcast but I will say it
No one will call Jasper the disaster if he wasn’t cus I never heard any other rider with a nick Nike name like da right ,
Let’s talk about how many times he attacked vanarut , you saw wa he did to bini last year , the whole world watch it .. did UCI did something No .. and now this one which cost him .. good .. yes he is a disaster yes he is a bully as simple as that .. a lot ppl were saying .. he will kill someone .. yes we all watched him so comeon …
You said bini might win another one .. I bloody agree with you .. he will win 🏆 twice and keep the green 💚💚💚💚💚💃💃💃💃🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷 bini all the way

    6. The only people that are damaging the image of one of the most interesting TDF in years, is the UCI with there idiotic fines.
As for sprinters changing lines while sprinting, IF the UCI were really serious on that they would have DQd Girmay as he closed De lei the same way that Jacobsen did to WVA.
But there us no consistency in there rulings and to dq Girmay is a place they didn't want to go and this is coming from a Girmay fan.

    7. One of the most interesting stages to watch through the whole thing, and it falls on the same time as the British F1 GP, and Raducanu in Wimbledon! At least it doesn't overlap with England in the football too!

    8. Rarely do comment but these TDF chats… The best stuff on this channel since Francis' specials with James&Lawrence.

Feels like proper journalism, well prepared, Emily is informed, eloquent and just a joy to listen to. Jimi keeps things easy and fun but not too much that the result is too foolish.

And with the guests, Chris being so knowledgable & mindful as he is always seems and Tony being that fantastic, authentic pot of gold as per usual, this couldn't have done much better.

One of my favorite tour recaps available. Hats off.

    9. The UCI needs to be ousted. We need a coupe where the world say screw you we’ll find another governing body. The EWS should have told the uci to stick it. I haven’t watched any enduro racing since the uci bought the rights.

    10. stop making excuses for Phillepson, look back on last years sprint stages where he got away 3 times with dangerous blocking on 3 stages without penalty, taking 3 wins and the green jersey. Sure the sprints are dangerous, all the more reason to take reckless out of it until they learn new habits

    11. For gravel races, the teams select the most suitable riders. However, now riders who have never or seldom ridden on gravel will participate. Roglič, one of the greatest cyclists, but also one with limited bike handling skills who frequently crashes under challenging conditions, will really fear this stage. Many riders, many competitions, a nervous group, it is just too dangerous. Luck is a factor at the Tour but should not be the decisive one.

    12. Gravel is the tour is not needed as you have specific gravel races now. It will be interesting to see how the teams prepare or don't be prepare for this stage.

    13. Francis come back and save your channel!

Cade Media has drifted so far away from why it was such a refreshing change from the rest of the normal pro-race oriented podcasts. Now, it’s full of race content BUT at a level of friends chatting down the pub, with little real racing knowledge or factual content. I subscribe to ‘Watts Occurring’ and ‘The Cycling Podcast’ for quality race oriented content.

I miss the massively refreshing take on the passion of cycling and guidance through all the equipment options away from industry pressure to buy stuff that I don’t need or makes no difference to my non-pro performance. Not sure I will take three weeks of this content…

    14. Love to see Bini dominating the sprints! Jasper the Disaster is definitely cooked

Finally Tony is back! I'm getting tired of Chris Hall glazing Cavendish literally every episode 🥱
