tonight a massive hurricane rips through the Caribbean leaving a trail of Destruction and fear for those trapped in its way he was scared um he was worried what the right thing to do was where the dangerous storm could hit next and why it has scientists so concerned the entire city of Halifax under a boil water advisory taking water out of the equation really messes things up the toll it’s taking on local businesses oh my God and a crisis playing out across this country everywhere you look it’s overdoses the fight to save lives in a small Ontario City wake up I don’t consider myself all that different from the clients that we’re trying to serve a new very personal [Music] approach from CBC News this is the national with Asha Tomlinson good evening Adrian is away we begin with the Monstrous hurricane Barrel tonight moving quickly toward Jamaica after slamming the southeast Caribbean as the strongest Atlantic storm ever recorded this time of year you can see the sheer force of the hurricane this video said to be from yesterday on Kaku in Grenada which took a direct hit so far at least six people across the region have been reported killed and Barrel is still going now a PO powerful category 4 hurricane it’s expected to reach Jamaica tomorrow before moving Northwest toward Mexico tonight Nicole Moralo shows us how this storm came to be so intense and what it means for the people in its wake bearing the brunt of an unprecedented storm parts of the southeast Caribbean now now grappling with widespread Devastation with communication in some areas difficult anxiety for loved ones caught in the hurricane he was scared um he was worried what the right thing to do was Canadian Emily Edwards is still waiting to hear from her husband who was on the island of karaku when it took a direct hit she’s now trying to stay positive he’s a a retired Canadian forces veteran um so as worried as I am right now uh by the fact that I haven’t spoken to him since this happened um I have full faith that he’s doing what he has to do right now so far reports out of the region hit are devastating the reports that I have received indicate that 90% of the houses have been severely damaged or destroyed and with barl headed towards Jamaica residents are preparing aware of how dangerous a powerful hurricane like this can be yeah and it develops so quick from a tropical depression so fast and first time to develop you know June July people are already stockpiling what they can as the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says life-threatening winds and Storm surges are expected into Wednesday this is an early and intense start to the hurricane season in May Noah projected 17 to 25 tropical storms the most they have ever forcasted and 8 to 13 hurricanes a consequence of record high ocean temperatures in the region we know that temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean are about a degree and a half uh warmer Celsius warmer than they would have been say a 100 years ago uh when human caused climate change wasn’t a Factor last year was the warmest year on record for the planet and our oceans it’s those warm Waters that act as fuel for hurricanes and can help them intensify rapidly as was the case with hurricane Barrel these warm sea surface temperatures that are being driven in part by human caused climate change allow these storms to have a lot of growth potential a lot of ability to spin faster and faster the Atlantic hurricane season only began a month ago and forecasters are concerned about what the next 3 months of the season will have in store Nicole we saw this storm intensify quickly is this something we can expect more of yeah um climate scientists are actually really concerned about this which is called rapid intensification we saw it uh last uh August in Florida hurricane Adalia went from a category 1 to a category 4 in 24 hours and then October uh there was the catastrophic uh hurricane Otis that struck Mexico and that intensified from a category 1 to a category 5 in 24 hours so warmer ocean w ERS climate change there is concern that this is going to happen more often scary stuff Nicole morero thank you thanks more than 200,000 people in Halifax are now under a boil water advisory tonight after unchlorinated water was released from the city’s biggest treatment plant as Shaya luck shows us it’s causing major disruptions for both residents and businesses for hundreds of thousands of people in Halifax this will be life for at least the next day a boil water advisory went out Monday after an electrical issue inside the city’s biggest water plant The Advisory covers drinking and cooking water brushing teeth and infant formula quickly I investigated and then realized oh dear this daycare closed for the day so staff could stock up on bottled water and fill enough jugs for 2 days we had three stoves going pots on every burner of every stove 120 children use the center at the end of it all I think there’s probably a thousand bottles of water that we ended up um getting uh and so we’re into it for about $650 around there the water advisory cost this Cafe an estimated $1,000 Tuesday taking water out of the equation really messes things up in a lot of ways that you don’t really realize she closed because she can’t boil water for a full minute her two coffee machines are plumbed directly into the tap easily % of the things that we sell in this Cafe come from these two machines officials at Halifax Water say they still don’t know what caused the electricity to fail at their largest plant we’re a bit baffled right now by what happened but we’re looking into it for sure officials do know the first backup generator didn’t come on and neither did the second meaning the plant didn’t chlorinate its water for about 30 minutes the utility believes the public was warned in time and they say the risk is low if people continue to boil chlorinate is the extra layer that goes over top to U kill any bugs or bacteria or germs that may still be in the water um but it’s just an extra precaution the boil advisory is expected to last until end of day Wednesday Shaya Lux CBC News Halifax people in Calgary and surrounding areas can use water inside normally again after nearly a month of conservation following a major water main break indoors you can use your water as you regularly would but outdoor water restrictions are still in place those outdoor water restrictions will remain until officials have a sense of how the repaired pipe responds to regular use businesses can also return to normal including indoor pools and car washes previously asked to close frustration continues tonight for WestJet customers in the wake of the long weekend strike with the airline still working to get its operations fully back online today dozens more flights were cancelled as Julia Wong reports with little Clarity on compensation some passengers are running out of patience this one should be watch it’s finally home suite home for Dean Manti he and his family were in Los Angeles Saturday when their flight back to Calgary was cancelled the chat feature would just tell you to call in to the same phone number that was not taking any any new callers and so we were stuck eventually Manti found flights for his family arriving 3 days later he says the delay cost around $5,000 between hotels rental cars and rebooked flights leaving him with a sour taste in his mouth it’s absolutely ludicrous to leave um leave somebody for dead in another country basically cuz that’s what they did customers of Sunwing owned by WestJet have also been left in the Lurch these two Edmonton friends are stranded in Mexico after their flight home was cancelled they were hopeful the airline would rebook them but they say they had to find their own way home it’s frustrating and it’s also just like I’m like it feels very demeaning because I feel like we’ve been treated like nothing the Canadian Transportation agency or CTA says a labor dispute is outside an Airlines control but if there’s a disruption rules say the airline has 48 hours to rebook you and if they can’t they have to make other travel arrangements or provide a refund if someone had to pay their own way because they weren’t able to get a flight within the first uh 48 hours they weren’t able to get on a flight um then the airline does owe that money um uh because that’s very very clear um in the rules passengers can also file claims with the Airlines and could escalate it to the CTA it’s important first of all to take notes about what their experience has been what information they have provided what messages they have received WestJet says it’s working to support affected passengers as it gets back to normal operations when that might happen is unclear Julia Wong CBC News Edmonton for the first time a democratic member of Congress is publicly calling for Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race as Paul Hunter tells us his plea joins A Chorus of concerns about Biden’s age and mental Fitness oh whole house as White House briefings go this was a remarkable one we understand the concerns we get it the president uh did not have a great night it was a bad night uh and he did on top of that he had a cold we’re not taking away from what you all saw or what the American people saw we understand it was a bad night question after question on the mental and cognitive ability of the US president after Joe Biden’s debate last week with Donald Trump a performance deemed by so many to be a stumbling disaster was he on meds no is the White House hiding anything no since the debate has Biden had a neurological scan a neurological scan look um what I can say is that just to take a step back it was a bad night we understand that it was a bad night um and the president has spoken to this and he understands that all of this as Whispers by democrats that Biden May well be unfit for office and should quit his bid for re-election turned public representative Lloyd doet from Texas in a statement writing I’m hopeful that Biden will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw I respectfully call on him to do so folks I know I’m not a young man and I know how to do this job Biden’s campaign has already countered naysayers with this new ad pulling comments from a rally the day after the debate when you get knocked down you get back up and as if to demonstrate Biden’s mental agility the White House also announcing an on camera interview with ABC news this week and a full press conference next week and while all that is happening Paul more news on that other candidate for the White House Donald Trump yeah more Fallout from yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity and how that might apply to Trump’s guilty verdicts in the so-called hush money trial involving adult film star Stormy Daniels Trump’s lawyers now arguing the whole thing should be tossed out because under that ruling they say some of the evidence would not have been allowed in Trump was to have been sentenced next Thursday that’s now put off to September so that lawyers for both sides can have their say on whether the guilty verdicts stand Asha all right Paul Hunter in Washington thank you former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani can no longer practice law in the state of New York after an appeals court disbarred him today the court found Giuliani repeatedly lied about Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss his attorney said they were disappointed but not surprised by the decision the former mayor of New York is also facing criminal charges in Georgia and Arizona over his role and efforts to overturn the election in Ontario a doctor who faced murder charges and the deaths of four patients has been acquitted on all charges Dr Brian Nadler was set to stand trial this week on four counts of first-degree murder and criminal negligence causing death but he was acquitted after a judge excluded some of the Crown’s evidence nadler’s team has long maintained his innocence the death toll continues to rise in India after a stampede at a Hindu religious event killed at least 116 people people many of them women and children it happened in the village in hathis District about 200 kilm southeast of India’s capital New Delhi it is unclear what caused the panic but as Marina Von stockelberg explains India has struggled with crowd control at similar events survivors sift through dust covered belongings clothing bags cell phones and ID cards items lost in the chaos of a deadly Stampede as people were trampled to death it happened as the crowd of thousands gathered at an open space in the village the event was called for by a local religious leader to honor the Hindu god Shiva this official says the Stampede happened when there was a sudden commotion from overcrowding and extreme afternoon Heat this man says he came to the event with eight other people they were all killed he says he doesn’t quite know what happened what’s also unclear is how many are dead that number Rose throughout the day family members gathered outside of a local hospital while bodies were brought in many of the victims were women and children the state’s chief minister has ordered an investigation into what’s being described as one of India’s worst stampedes in recent years but it’s not the first time it’s happened at a religious festival or gathering in the country in several cases hundreds have also been killed often the result of poor management of massive crowds the Indian government says it will compensate families of the dead from this incident with 200,000 rupees about 3,300 Canadian dollars Marina Von stackelberg CBC News AWA an Ontario judge has granted an injunction to the University of Toronto T to clear a pro Palestinian encampment from its downtown campus our fight was never about the injunction or the space itself but for justice the ruling says all tents must be cleared by Wednesday night those who don’t comply may be arrested and removed by police the encampment was first set up two months ago many protesters say this is not the end of their fight thousands of Palestinians are scrambling to flee conun tonight after Israel issued an evacuation order of the Southern Gaza City as Sasha petrac shows us the distressing images reveal a dire situation especially for the sick and wounded ambulances weave through the dusty demolished south of Gaza with nowhere to take the injured the last facility accepting patients con Eunice’s European Union hospital closed after an Israeli evacu ation order leaving this man on the street with both legs broken there’s no one to care for us patients he says as he and others are turned away from the only other option the overflowing Nasser Hospital many of these wounded arrived after overnight Israeli strikes that killed 25 Palestinians according to Gaza Health officials Israel’s milit Ary says it bombed areas used to launch rockets over the Border attacks claimed by Palestine Islamic Jihad a militant group that sometimes fights alongside Hamas prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu vows Israeli operations will continue until Hamas is eliminated we are full of the spirit of Victory he says though there’s no sign the fighting is ending instead thousands of Palestinians are on the move once again about a quarter of a million people told by Israel to evacuate conun and the surrounding area an evacuation of such a massive scale will only heighten the suffering of civilians and drive humanitarian needs even higher Israel has increased the flow of drinking water to Gaza but experts say there’s still not nearly enough aid for population constantly forced to move I can’t do it says we’re going to die walking Sasha pet CBC News Toronto Toronto’s lucrative tow truck industry is being linked to a new wave of violence there’s so many ways that tow trucks can be used to uh disguise organized crime from shootings to fires to fraud the accusations and the push to crack down next plus two years after relaxing rules on personal grooming I get to wear a pretty cool mustache now Canada’s military is scaling back we’ll tell you why and a moving moment on stage with Michael J fox and Cole CL we’re back in two Toronto police say a longstanding tow truck turf war is behind eight shootings that took place over the weekend now a task T Force has been assembled to address the ongoing violence in the industry etham Musa now with more on what we know it’s a war that’s been brewing for years rival tow truck companies using violence and intimidation to carve out Turf over the past 6 months Toronto and the greater Toronto area have seen increased criminal activity surrounding a small segment of tow truck uh industry police say that increased activity has led to 24 tow truck related shootings since January accounting for about 12% of Toronto’s total shootings so far this year it’s specific to a number of people and uh a number of different conflicts that are arising as a result of things happening in that industry and we’re very laser focused on those particular conflicts police say those conflicts led to eight tow truck related shootings in Toronto’s east end this past weekend alone there have also been fires and even murders ERS connected to the industry it’s a wonderful tool for organized crime this expert says it’s all happening Nationwide there’s so many ways that tow trucks can be used to uh disguise organized crime facilitate organized crime the movement of people and illegal U substances authorities also alleg some tow truck companies are causing and staging collisions and working with auto repair shops to carry out fraud tow truck drivers in Ontario now need a provincial certificate to operate the change came into effect Monday to help weed out criminal activity and protect drivers from excessive fees we have not eliminated the ability for criminals to make money in the towing business despite all the regulations but this expert says it’s not enough the war is really there because they can make an exorbitant amount of money if they’re not tracked properly Toronto police have now launched a tow truck task Force to crack down on criminal activity linked to the increasingly violent industry it Mose to CBC News Toronto Canada’s military is bringing back restrictions on personal grooming the Can Air Forces is still getting a sense of who it is culturally why facial hair has our soldiers divided and the small onio town fighting an opioid crisis everywhere you look it’s overdoses met by a specialized team using a personal touch to save lives I feel really comfortable sharing and telling them the truth the national breaks down the story shaping our world [Music] next the keys of your Majesty’s good City King Charles accepting the key of Edinburgh as the city celebrates its 900th anniversary but in keeping with tradition Charles returned the key the ceremony part of a shortened royal visit to Scotland with the UK’s general election set for Thursday CBC News has learned the Canadian Armed Forces has reversed some of the changes made to a controversial personal grooming policy from 2022 the new tightened regulations came into effect today Murray Brewster walks us through the changes and the backlash that prompted them by traditional military standards this is considered a bit scruffy I get to wear pretty cool mustache now and that’s why the military has moved to set some limits it has amended its controversial grooming regulations rules that were first relaxed in September 2022 the length of beards is now restricted to 2.5 cm and hair for both men and women must be tied back away from the face and off the collar all right bring it down there the relaxation of decades old standards has been the subject of sometimes Furious debate that has divided military members this in internal DND survey obtained by CBC news shows just how deep the split runs when it comes to the overall relaxation of Standards only about 33% feel as though the initial changes are good for the calf 44% do not members of the Army non-commission members and men are generally less supportive however women and members of the two SL gbt Q Plus Community say it makes them proud to serve when the relaxed rules first came into effect the military was at the height of the sexual misconduct crisis important context for this researcher who says that atmosphere contributed to cynicism among the troops it’s quite hard to read those changes as outside of the political and social context where they happened where which was the sexual misconduct crisis and questioning of the militaries Equity diversity and inclusion record but a former senior Commander disagrees saying the changes were first discussed as far back as 2016 and intended to reflect the new overall face of Canadian Society the Canadian Forces is still getting a sense of who it is culturally the argument against the relaxed standards most often is that it takes away from combat Effectiveness however there is nothing in the research to back that up this has made some profoundly uncomfortable you know based on on the generation they come from others from a newer generation are completely at ease with it most of Canada’s allies ended this grooming debate several years ago many allow beards as long as they’re trimmed hair is a different story though most Alli Nations insist their troops be as clean cut as possible Marie Brewster CBC News Ottawa now let’s break down the news shaping our world with opioid deaths at crisis level three people di here a great front of me an Ontario Town can commits to caring for users where they live they think that maybe no one cares Wake Up Now does it work I trust them all with my life Omar dagi Pacho shows us The Human Side of some very difficult lives and a paramedics mission to help them survive we’re with paramedics responding to a 911 call it seems like an apparent overdose this is pem Ontario Carrie [Music] went in h foaming at the mouth and shaking everywhere you look it’s overdoses wake up man you do not know what it’s like to live on the street have no roof over your head I dispatched call 46 do you think First Responders will see him again tonight possibly I wish I could go back I don’t I don’t want to be like this there’s nothing on my belt here that’s going to solve addictions why wouldn’t we try something new because the answer is if we do nothing what’s going to change priority purple it means there’s an immediate threat to life my producer Ryan and I we’ve been covering this fight against fentel in Ottawa we sat down with the people who use it in Bellville we saw how a toxic batch sent that City into a state of emergency and now we’re turning to Pembrook we spent three days there over the course of a week it’s a small town trying a new solution and we got rare access to paramedics just trying to keep people alive purple 23 Echo 01 overdose poisoning can you attach me to that please how many 00 this is our last day in Pembrook this town sees more than double the number of fatal overdoses per capita than the rest of onario and we’re inside Lori Shannon’s paramedic vehicle responding to calls most of us never see oh my God what made this drug oh my God oh my God and that’s just a withdrawal it’s fenel most overdose calls are last year they got about 900 of these calls he’s going to see worse than this is just starting that’s Carrie we’ve bumped into her every single day that we’ve been here she’s been in a rough spot but not like this it’s a town of 14,000 people so you can’t help but run into the same people day after day after day and rrw county is using that to try a new approach they’re sending out paramedics and social workers finding people where they’re at before things get critical this is day one we meet Carrie she’s just been robbed and she’s looking for help what happened to your ribs Carrie uh they got broken I was in a scuffle we walk down the road people throw change at us uh you crackhead you need some spare change uh you need some food they’ll throw pizza crust people are very ignorance you do not know what it’s like to live on the street have no roof over your head be able to cover up at night you able to have a bath nobody knows what it’s like at all I’ve been out here for a year I’m 56 years old and I live on the street when Messa first came to the Grind I stayed away I didn’t want to get close to them I don’t I don’t trust people but with Lori I see her all the time so I feel really comfortable sharing and telling them that truth and what’s the matter with us us addicts find it hard to trust and with Lori and Joe Asel all of them the Nessa crew I trust them all with my life Carrie trusts Lori and her crew with the life of her family too and by the end of the trip we’re going to find out exactly what that trust means it’s the kind of trust that takes hours of leg work and it’s the foundation for RR County’s new plan it’s called Mesa they set up shop at a service Hub called The Grind I think the the first time I went there I was outside to introduce myself there may eight people outside having a cigarette and I think like six went back inside and Tu St to talk to me so it it did take some time so yeah we had to earn some some trust and and uh and and we have to maintain it here’s what that trust gets you out here an open doorway into the world of fenel and homelessness Lorie’s starting her day a tent encampments been vandalized a 70-year-old beaten in his sleep he’s got signs of a brain injury doesn’t want to go on camera doesn’t want to go to the hospital either and so Lori and a social worker get him into a motel room to recover for at least a few days Lori was a paramedic in Toronto she spent 15 years there but this it’s different she knows everyone by name like Debbie we run into her at a coffee shop she’s recovering from a stab wound to the face everywhere you look it’s overdosed is it’s not an easy drug to get off of it’s got the worst withdrawal symptoms the longest lasting withdrawal symptoms it needs to be there needs to be a serious serious driving force to get someone clean of it it’s like this all day downtown streets rural areas she’s meeting clients everywhere she goes when you hear uh about the fennel crisis what does that what does that look like you terrible you seen it down here on the street yeah I seen three people die like right in front of me it’s not fun people you knew yeah best friends can I ask what you’re using fentel F we’ve heard a lot of um people overdosing on fennel obviously uh a really dangerous mix right now with the benzos the animal tranquilizer zyline who knows what’s in it what what are your thoughts about what you’re seeing on the street does that scare you at all sure does yeah yep what do you think about every time you use fenel [ __ ] it but what do you say to that as someone who wants to help when someone says you know [ __ ] it they think that maybe no one cares but I think it’s it’s more that they think that they’re not worth being cared about you’re trying to establish the fact that that you’re going to be there the next day and you’re going to miss them if they’re not there yeah if if you show up and they’re not there yes yes absolutely I can’t imagine what it it must feel like to know that or believe that nobody is on your side hours upon hours of conversations it’s finding people getting them medication wound care temporary shelter it’s connecting them with social workers and the services that will keep them alive for some it’s just a really slow uh long drawn out suicide process is one way to describe it um and you just accepted that I guess well you know had to you have to like there’s only I can only control what I can do for other people which is try and set people up for success and what they do with that is up to them yeah in between the check-ins the inevitable calls for an overdose in progress uh can you attach me to that call um on 333 Dorne please it’s a fentanyl overdose and it’s a client Lori knows well they find him on the property line in between homes he’s clinging to Consciousness wake up man he’s defecated himself there’s this rush to get him to hospital he’s alive but it’s impossible to know what mix of fenel he’s on the batches they just keep changing it’s like this in countless cities and towns across Canada a losing battle against opioid deaths and it’s not just fentanyl it’s fentanyl mixed with benzo diazines animal tranquilizers xylazine the list keeps growing paramedics and police they keep playing catchup and every time they attend an overdose call they ask themselves two questions one what’s the person on two if they survive where do they take them when we come back the desperate search for a young man in trouble can you attach me to that please Lori and her team try to find him before it’s too late [Music] in a town torn by drugs a life is at risk and things happen fast oh my God the hunt for a missing man comes to a jarring end I heard him trying to call for me I went in he foaming at the mouth and shaking as Omar dagi Pacho concludes his story it becomes clear what drives some people to do what they do there is a call in town what is it 30-year-old Land Street we’re on another overdose call a man’s passed out on someone’s front lawn he’s in and out of Consciousness his name is Mark so um you were seen I guess down the road Lori knows him by name she doesn’t know where he sleeps though no address on file and he’s incoherent so they do what they can how did you end up solving that they’re they’re gonna take him somewhere where hopefully he can perk up a little bit and ideally he does so and doesn’t sort of wander off and and find we find ourselves in the same situation again so yeah well without a place to take him to there’s nowhere there’s there’s no there’s nowhere to take him it’s time and it’s resources she’s got a list of people that she still needs to check up on new drugs new problems like lesions in sections and the longer they go on the higher the cost homelessness isn’t always Rock Bottom you can go farther there are real costs to not just the homelessness aspect of it but the illness that that can go with it if you were to temporarily house destabilize I’m sure that’s a cost but just like a one day cost for someone who who needs that kind of I don’t know what that is a lot I imagine here’s how some researchers see the numbers a hospital Ward costs $32,500 a month a month jail half as much a shelter costs $7,500 a month but if you can get someone in Supportive Housing the monthly price tag drops to $3,500 and so Lori tries to meet people at the grind it’s a coffee shop and a helping Center and it’s where the Mesa teams connect with dozens of people facing addictions and homelessness we’re feeding about 70 people a day um I’ll just take you on the other side we know our client we know the people that are that are in need and with that builds trust and we’re getting more people to the agencies where where they can get help and I think breaking that barrier down especially with um that relationship is where you know we’re seeing success it’s a One-Stop shop for help this is where we run into Carrie again it’s been days since we first met her she’s had a chance for her ribs to heal and she’s feeling good last time we we talked to you uh Lori had checked you out and sort of giving you a sense of what might be wrong with your with your ribs there does that kind of interaction was that way LED you to the hospital yeah would you have gone otherwise would I have gone otherwise no no but her life is about to get a lot worse the challenge at the grind demand keeps piling up it’s overwhelming how you feeling today after after yesterday how does today feel busy [Music] Lori chocks it up to Growing Pains because Mesa is brand new long-term all of renr County’s agencies are going to have a role to play in this solution Mesa in a nutshell it’s this if you can get police paramedics all the service agencies to build relationships with the people at the heart of this opioid crisis then maybe you can find out where they are what they’re on and what services each of them actually needs to get back on their feet and if you can do that that maybe you can prevent them from dying from the next overdose but that kind of work takes a lot of time it takes a lot of hard work and it takes a lot of empathy and the kind of person who believes the change is actually possible put very simply and without getting into it I haven’t had a drink in jesi of 6 years and I don’t I don’t consider myself all that different from the clients that we’re trying to serve um and I consider myself very fortunate and that’s part of my motivation for participating in this program sounds to me like you’re taking some soless in the fact that you think what you’re doing here is actually making a difference [Music] yeah it’s a lot but she’s not alone half a dozen paramedic teams are already paired up with social workers and now op are on board too why wouldn’t we try something new because the answer is if we do nothing what’s going to change the answer is nothing it’ll just it’ll just the cycle will continue so at least with the Mesa program which I’m a Believer in uh I think that will be a serious step in the right direction as far as how we can support individuals uh to get them help get them treatment give them a uh roof over their heads uh I believed in that message everyone we spoke to agrees it’s not just policing or housing or support that’s going to solve this first you got to address the addiction but kicking fenel that comes at a cost we keep hearing from people who tried I’ve never been that ill in my life I never want to go through it again in my life and so I’m so petrified to to to quit feel like that again um I God I wish I could I wish I could just go back I wish I could go back I don’t I don’t want to be like this but I I my body will kill me but in that moment of vulnerability Lori sees an opportunity you want them on their worst day do you want them on their worst day where they’re so weak um or or just beaten down by their addiction they’re feel like I’m done I’ve had enough that’s when you want to get them cuz that’s the I think personally that’s the greatest chance for success is getting them at that point and that is why she’s spending an entire afternoon searching for a guy named Brandon hi where is he I want to do what I can for his mom she’s asked for my help so I’m going to make a phone call and hopefully find some information maybe we can find him mother explained to me last night he’s getting he’s getting sick he’s getting withdrawal sick there’s one solution for that and he’s not on the methodone program so we keep looking for Brandon he spent last night at the hospital Lori brought him there and she knows the windows closing just apparently dropped off where we were probably a pretty good chance that he’s on Fentanyl and I really hope he’s not wherever we find him if we do I’m looking for Brandon uh he’s gone Lori keep following leads tracking his Trail but by Sundown still no sign of Brandon and Lor’s not giving up my word means something to me and you know I want it to mean some something to the people that we interact with and if I can’t follow through it it it means nothing they can’t trust us and then she gets the call po can you attach me to that please it’s priority purple immediate threat to life oh my God and it’s Brandon Brandon I just want you to I want to know that you hear me when I say your [Music] name the person she’s been searching for all day will you go with the crew when they come though Brandon is car’s son I heard him trying to call for me I went in and hit foaming at the mouth and shaking and oh my God I never you never want to see your kid like that I division in my head all the time now what made this drug oh my God we can go anytime okay yeah yeah we’re good leave at the doors uh [Music] yeah we’ve been in penri for 3 days now and what we found here was a community at the end of their rope trying a totally different approach developing human connection that approach though it’s taking a toll and for paramedics it means long days sleepless nights and the knowledge that they’re going to have to follow up on the same people day after day after day some of them might be ready to turn a corner others might not but everyone we spoke to said they feel heard they feel seen and when the time does come to seek help they know exactly who they’re going to be turning to Omar dagi Pacho has been in touch with Brandon he got a motel room for a few days with Lor’s help to recover and go through withdrawal again he gave Omar permission to show his face hoping people will grasp the Damage Done by fentanyl coming up a Canadian icon fighting a lifechanging disease team up with Cold Play The
