A bike computer, also known as a head unit, is essential for cyclists, particularly pros. These devices provide valuable information like maps, power data, heart rate, and elevation, helping to inform and improve your cycling! But what information do Tour de France pros display on their head units? Dan and Ollie had the chance to check out John Degenkolb’s Wahoo, chat with Sam Bennett about the data on his head unit, and learn from Nils Eekhoff about his key data fields.

back in my day as a pro Rider I was a real data nerd the more numbers I could look at on my screen the happier I was as a rider and as a person a fast forward 12 years and there is more data and there are more numbers available than ever before to pro cyclist so we thought we’d ask a few what data fields they have on their head units during stages of the tort [Music] fronts so I’ve now managed to grab the legend that is John D who’s going to talk us through his data fields right let’s have a look at the screen then what have we got I got here my screen number one uh which is obviously like first field is the the power then speed kilometers heart rate RPM kilj the average speed average power and uh the time the time is also important uh for feeding for feeding really important to just have track uh how long is it ago when you had your last bar your last gel your last uh this has changed quite a lot since I was racing with you in 2010 the the screen I use actually in racing is uh is is this one with the map yeah the map during the race is uh the speed y kilm the power like actual power the time you like a little bit of smoothing on the power it’s a 3 second average yeah like especially on like a climb or something then uh it’s it’s more accurate actually so we’re talking to you ahead of stage one of the tour of France I presume the map for tomorrow’s stage will be put into your head unit and you’re following yeah tell you how far you to go like honestly in The Last 5 Years uh I would say there was uh there was not one single race where I didn’t have a map on and so you can zoom out uh you know in which direction you go you know how the wind is now there’s a a right turn coming up and you know like after that corner is going to be crosswind so that is that is a tool to just keep an overview on what’s happening in the race and what’s what’s uh what’s coming towards you cycling is getting more and more professional and uh when you compare it to to other sports when you compare it to Formula 1 they know exactly what’s coming towards them and uh they also have to handle that situation uh do you ever look at the profile to see how far it is to the top do you find you find that depressing or that the next pages and I also use like not constantly but uh like obviously when I want to see like when you put in the parkour then you have the profile and then you see where are you now on the profile but you can also like uh open up the different climbs how far is it to the next climb and how steep is the next climb uh you can see also by the the colors of the the profile while yeah it fls out on the top so it’s worth to like go totally in the red for the next kilometer and then uh you can manage to hang on because it flattens out on top well thank you very much for your time we wish you the best of luck for your tour how many tours is this this is number 10 small anniversary so the best of luck for number 10 I’m joined by Sam Bennett green jersey winner of the toall of France and uh multiple stage winner Sam what is on youo well I have a lot of data um for training especially on the the the main ride page I have uh ride time moving time Watts average Watts RPM the heart rate then normalized power calories TSS which is kind of a strange one but I like I don’t know why I have a thing in my head where I like to hit like at least 50 TSS per hour even in the race it’s nice to see but I mean this is more from my my my training page and then the total km distance max power 5 second power then we’re going to move on normally our race on this page it’s like we have the GPX file where we get to see the route so really descending you never get get caught out in the corners so sometimes you go into the corner you use the map for descending yeah as well so most days like you can tell from the map if there engine coming up so so so sometimes you’re going into a corner Full Tilt and it might tighten up at the last moment so normally you can see ahead what’s happening on the road and to be honest this quite a safe feature and I don’t know how I race beforehand without it and now I feel blind if I don’t have it so it’s a bit like a computer game yeah like is you have a little map on a driving game so um yeah have that uh watts is on there but that was mainly for the the last TT I did and I keep forgetting to take it off it’s nor my uh lap time from the start of the race and uh km for the distance of the race so I have my my fueling strategy that I have each km and then when I hit the markers on this then I know to eat or to drink so that never end up Bing do that flash up as a notification on the Wahoo or do you just do that as manual do that as manual so but I could I could actually have it set up but for every stage it’s a lot of work but it stopped me like under fueling or overfueling like I didn’t get 12 where I was like the vomit Comet uh just um yeah just to keep on top of it make sure I’m well fueled another one then I have my lap page which is lap km the the speed elevation degrees and then my body my core temperature kind of I kind of found modern thing yeah I kind of found that if I go over a certain temperature that the power starts to dip and then also say provance it was raining was super cold I could see once the body temperature went under a certain amount I was also actually losing power I couldn’t actually get temperat threshold almost almost and the other thing you mentioned was that you and I thought this was really cool you connect up your shifters yeah so for us in the bunch it’s so compact often you don’t have to change page but I like to have the buttons on the the hoods so that I never take my my hand away from the break so that if anything happens in front of me I’m always ready right well you’ve got a team briefing to get to so I don’t want to hold you up any longer thanks so much man great to see Sam was quite nervous in that interview his heart rate is quite High you see it’s on on it so I’m now with Neils aov the world champion from Harriet in 2019 in my eyes and most other people so I think you’ll all agree uh firstly before we look on your wahoo how data driven are you as a person I mean I like my numbers but uh yeah I also feel like in the race it’s also still about uh yeah the instincts and uh yeah if you got to follow you got to follow let’s have a look then what have you got on your computer yeah so I’ve got my w here um yeah I just set the the speed I got the the kilometers the average speed which gear I’m riding in but it’s not connected to the Shimano so I don’t use it it’s just the blank space the top speed and then the time of uh of the ride and then my Cadence that’s it so no no power data at all on page one no this is actually my Rising page this is the only page I use in uh in the race um yeah sometimes on Long Long climbs I I tend to to add one extra square and then I have my power and my average power but uh I I don’t use it often okay and is that the only screen that you use or do you go on to the maps sometimes or the sometimes I use the map but uh yeah I I I don’t like it that much I just like to focus on the road focus on the race and that’s it and who would you say within team DSM feric is the most data driven who’s got the most data fields and numbers on their Wahoo oo good question I mean I guess we all know now that Frank ther Brook the our new guy uh he is quite into Data but I actually don’t know how much data he used in the race okay that’s the youngsters for the younger yeah yeah well thank you very much no worries and good luck for this all thank you quite an interesting disparity between the riders that we spoke to uh some clearly like their data and a lot of it others just like to be quite simple and go on racing Instinct I was loving John D coold talking about the maps that they use and indeed the profil so they can see the steepness the gradients of the climbs that they’re tackling and how far they’ve got towards the top I would have loved to have had that back in my day anyway hope you found this interesting at home if you have we would love it if you click on the thumbs up icon that is just down below this video uh I’ll see you all again soon

    1. I'm not, and never will be a professional cyclist, so I have no screen on my handlebars at all, because I don't NEED any of this information, and I cycle partly to get away from screens. I carry a smart phone (on silent!) in my rear pocket running strava and as emergency navigation or 🤯 phone calls. I'm not denying that all this info is interesting and/or useful, but it's not for me. I recommend trying riding without one, see if you're any slower or quicker, and if you're more relaxed. Focus on your surroundings, listen to your body.

    2. What!?? No mention that the WAHOO is 11% more aero than their competitors? Learned this in the training sessions (for work) with Wahoo. 😄.
I use just the basics. Speed, distance and elevation. Where I live there are large "dead" zones, so a phone is not reliable.

    3. That map feature truly is incredible. It track where you have been, and has every route (from roads to MTB single track) displayed clearly so you can see where you’re going too. It’s saved me a number of times from being lost.

    4. Thanks Dan…so , in your day , it was a sextant and an abacus ?? Yeah. I'm learning new tech all the time , it is amazing , but …expensive !!

    5. Is it just me, Or do you remember when your bike Sigma computer was wired and it showed ride time, distance and speed ?
I remember racing when SRM came out and everyone in the peleton thought this was magic. I honestly can't believe how much data is on my Wahoo now.
      Go Cav.

    6. Cycling should NOT be compared to F1 which is mostly about the technology. Cycling is about a human endeavor and should be compared to track and field (athletics to you). The less technology the better.

    7. I’ll tell what’s NOT on my Wahoo – my bloody HR, useless HRMs. Don’t buy the HRM straps they are just unreliable even if the Elemnt Bolt is ok. Whinge over.

    8. Very much like how Degenkolb controls his Spotify through his wahoo. Severely disappointed he's apparently been listening to the trash motivation song by Kontra K last.

    9. When I got back into cycling as an adult , my first computer was 3 fields speed, cadence , Heartrate. Now I have a garmin and I have a couple extra fields ( Elapsed time and Distance). But when I first started watching the pro races it was all SRM, and what was taped to the stem were important direction changes . Now all the teams have these GPS computers and the riders can actually see the route on the screen if they want, and the notes taped to the stem if any are the fuelling routine..
