The time has finally come: the Brompton World Championships are here! In this unique race that shows off Brompton’s functionality and design, Si competes in business attire instead of his usual lycra—a Brompton race signature—will have to sprint to unfold his Brompton bike, and try to cycle fast enough to podium! oh my God have you seen how far we’ve got to run are you right feel my heart rate going through the roof go go I am racing a Brompton in the world championships of bromton now as an XPR cyclist and regular bromton user I feel like on paper I’m qualified to be here but the question is how am I fast enough on the bike and crucially how am I fast enough unfolding The Bike plus who are all these people doing the bromton world championships and lastly seeing as Lyra is banned what do I even wear toy jacket that’s what now the Brompton is the star of city street it’s the king of commuting and it’s probably not the bike you think of when it comes to racing let alone a World Championships but yet here we are in the heart of London at the very cool King’s cross development literally just down the road from where the very first bromton was born and actually not far away from where they are still made today over the course of this day 500 bromton Riders going to be trying to qualify for a place in the Grand Final but first of all I don’t think I actually know exactly what a bromton race even involves so Siri you are the event manager here you run all of this can you talk me through what a brumpton race actually is what does it involve yes so the Brompton World Championships are unlike any other bike race you’re going to be a part of so they start in a Le man style so your bromton is apart from you folded up on the track and before you can even start racing around the track you have to race to fold your bike and then here this year it there running involves there’s a little bit of running it’s yeah little bit little bit little bit okay um and then once you’ve done that here this year at King’s cross we’ve got an urban circuit so it’s 1 km five times around and if you’re one of the first five over that finish line then you automatically qualify for our final which is the exact same setup you still have to unfold your bike at first but then it’s 10 laps around okay top five qualify wow okay yes I come to watch a heat to uh just to see how it goes down oh my God have you seen how far we’ve got a run that’s like a legitimate running race for me God I can feel my heart rate going through the roof [Applause] [Music] yes go go [Music] go go go [Music] go bromton themselves have very kindly supplied this absolute top of the range bike so this is one of their taline models tea standing for titanium and as well as being super duper light it’s also stiffer as well now you might not need or even notice that on a regular commute but it is quite handy in a racing situation and something that I’d not realized when this bike was launched was that not only were the engineers searching for every weight saving possible I mean this is just 7.95 kilos but actually they’ve refined their hinge clamp mechanisms as well so folding and unfolding the bike is e even faster and I got to say genuinely when I first jumped on this one as opposed to my usual Seine model I was absolutely Blown Away by how much faster it is I mean effectively if I don’t qualify for the final it is 100% all on me I think I need some advice I found someone so this is Mike who is the customer service manager at bromton and you’ve just won the heat okay so I’m in desperate need of some advance okay me through some of thetics for nailing aomt race so I think the the first thing is the unfold you’re got to be very very calm just do your your fold nice and calm and get into the front grrip if you get there you’re in a good position to start off okay what kind of time am I aiming for for my unfold uh I’d say you want to be under 12 seconds I mean what are the tactics so I think for me I there was a front group and I just made sure to get into that and then I sat there for the first sort of five laps or so maybe 5 minutes and then with that I then went to the front put a bit of power down and then you’ve got a long straight coming along this section just really fast along there got some Corners just got to nail the corners and then just keep keep it calm and keep the power going yeah and talk me through your bike as well cuz that it looks trick right well a pretty standard ronon uh so this is from I think 2018 so it’s a steel frame I’ve got a 56 too chin ring on the front is the one thing I’ve changed it’s the bike I used to ride to work every day does 100K a week does it wow uh the only thing I changed on it is on Friday I put new tires on it so they look a bit cleaner a bit more bling put new chain on it new sprockets on it and I changed the brake blocks so I think I need to practice unfolding don’t I I give you hand anytime you want yeah go then let me here’s my bike okay so we’ll just do it cam we won’t do it fast first thing yeah do your saddle all right okay up that’s what I would suggest then bring your handlebars up yeah that’s your main move boom okay and then cuz you’ve got the nice self aligning hinges on the T line you’ll be nice and quick at that see you later mate see that is [Music] you I’ve been thinking I’m going to try and rack my bike of Midway through on the right so I can jump on it quickly cycle across start and that means basically I won’t have to run quite as far but I also then hopefully if I make a quick getaway won’t get stuck in traffic as well yeah adrenaline is high I’m not going to lie find this heat format it’s very bad for my anxiety it’s too too many races under the belt so all of the emotions just come back so um yeah wish me luck guys your bik on the right or the left hand good atmosphere glad H it’s I’m being a [Applause] gladiator head back the please [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Applause] don’t have fun what a rush firstly can we just have a little high five for the start uh that little bit of practice and the coaching paid off so uh I was second over the line which I’m quite pleased with and some guy came past like a rocket there was no way I was going to hold his wheel and then I got in a little group at one point there was five of us and I was thinking like my special skill as a bike racer was to come last out of every group I was ever in so I was thinking I’m not going to qualify so then um someone else attacked and then I was able to go over the top and uh and I just kept my head down to the Finish got second so I feel like as long as it’s a hard enough race I’ll be all right but it’s going to be a different ball game in the final with uh people of an even ability think it might get a bit tactical so uh yeah also I realized Adam BL is here so like he’s got a bit of pedigree that lad World Tour and a sprinter he’s also quite tactically astute did Adam give me a turn no he didn’t did he is he ever going to give me a turn no no he’s not he’s going to sit on and Sprint cuz that’s what he’s really really really good [Music] [Applause] at now before my heat I did say that if I didn’t get through it was all on me and not on the bike I was probably underselling this a little bit now it’s not an e Brompton it’s not got a motor it’s not one of those but they have fully fully tricked this bike out so it is so fast a lot of what makes a bromton so amazing as a commuter City bike has been sacrificed on the speed so my mud guards have gone built-in lights have gone the bomb prooof tires have been replaced by these much faster rolling numbers complete and we can see with fancy inner tubes oh yes so uh so yeah rolling resistance has decreased quite significantly and I’ve also got clipless pedals on here as well so I don’t know why you would use those as a normal commuter um give and I have to wear special cycling shoes now but uh but nevertheless for a bromton race it was blooming good so uh yeah I basically cheating it’s that fast also if you’re looking at this B and thinking I wonder why his Chain’s got dandruff oh no it’s not dandruff my very good friend Alex pyton kindly waxed this chain with sil’s super fast chain wax the chain is it so yeah I’ve saved like good few Watts there obviously bromton is not built for aerodynamics but um this GoPro 360 increases my aerodynamic drag Co efficient quite significantly what was particularly annoying about this GoPro 360 is it wasn’t on so that was my fault uh in my panic I sort of didn’t press it hard enough so um yeah I just had it on for show [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Final Countdown then for the big one it’s actually 10 laps this time so a little bit less emphasis on the unfold my main concern actually is my nutrition strategy I missed lunch and I’m not very kid if I don’t have lunch so that’s um if I blow on an 8 km race that’s why [Music] what an atmosphere down here what an amazing location look at everyone all right I’m just going to sneak in the front [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] such a good start man your wheels to follow [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] la right up on your [Music] [Music] [Applause] right oh my what that was such good fun like totally Bonkers at the start like that was a different ball game racing with those guys there was a lot of elbows there was a lot of like pushing and then uh yeah the guy that won just went just legged it but more than that it was just the atmosphere on the circuit like when you drop in to the start finish straight oh I’ve missed that so much the buzz oh it’s wicked and then I basically I managed to attack with I think about five laps to go and it was one of those ones where I just like I was hurting but I thought everyone else is going to be hurting too I just put my head down and went for it and uh yeah managed to like hold him off get a gap so I’m stoked I didn’t I think this was recording as well hello yes yes two minor victories come on Louisa where are you smash how cool is that well done H well done I have to say well that is a wrap from the bromton World Championships 2024 what an amazing event gravel racing you can go and do one this is what it’s all about fast furious done in 10 km brilliant anyway no that was just an absolute Rush what what a pleasure thank you bromson for inviting us thank you as well for Lending me a taline which I think I had the Fest bike in the race and uh yeah absolutely needed it we’re about to head to the Afterparty which is just over there um so all that’s left for you to do is please give the video a big thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed it and make sure you subscribe to gcn as well if you haven’t already we do really value your support

    1. Top job Si. Great to meet you at the start and attempt to clear up the Cheddar Gorge cycling conundrum. Also, nice to see Mrs Wife's bottom several times in the footage of the bike on its own. Hope to join in myself next year! 😀

    2. Nah thats way to funny. They put in a chant from the swedish football team AIK at 11:00. It goes "Kom igen gnaget" which means "Come on gnaget". Gnaget is one of the teams nicknames.

    3. I was lucky enough to do the BWC on the mall in 2016 and the atmosphere was amazing. I can understand Si's big grin. Possibly my favourite race ever!

    4. Quoc do "normal" shoes with SPD for the style conscious hipster. Those would work well for the race.
(I am not a hipster, or style conscious but their Chelsea bot works for me as an SPD shoe that I can wear at work all day.

    5. Si's genuine friendliness, passion for cycling, sense of style, and devastating race skills made this a great video! Well done! Will GCN launch a line of tweed blazers in the shop?

    6. That was great. I love my Brompton Chpt3, but the T Line is something else.
The eccentricity and engineering make this such great viewing.
      Love it…

    7. As a man, a Dane with a 9 kilo Superlight Brompton I would have loved to partcipate, but sadly, after a traffic accident in my youth, I don't run that well with a partly lame leg, so I would have been handicapped at start! 😄 Finn. Denmark

    8. "That little bit of practice and the coaching paid off" cut to Simon putting the handlebars up before the seat, ignoring half of the training and advice

    9. It really makes me happy to say that the last 2 videos I watched on GCN featured their presenters, or most of them, wearing non lycra clothes.

    10. I can picture Matt Stephens giggling his way through this race like 10 years ago! Si's in great company, loved the video ❤😂
