this is my new gravel race bike the colago [Music] g4x in this video I’m going to tell you all about it but seeing as it’s the bike that I’m going to be using to race the gravel World Series on in order to try to qualify for the gravel World Championships I’ll also talk you through some of my specific choices as well as bags nutrition and [Music] Spares firstly though can we just take a moment to admire this bike it’s as cool as mustard get it mustard yellow no tough crowd quick Rec cap kago CS series bikes were once some of the most successful bikes in the prop pelaton but gradually their iconic carbon tube to carbon lug construction was superseded as race bikes became ever lighter then ever more Arrow then ever lighter and more Arrow at the same time now it didn’t doesn’t in fact stop the C Series bikes from being amazing to ride in fact arguably it can make them better because they’re freed from the shackles of performance but if you want to go as fast as possible then a carbon monoco frame construction can yield lighter and more AO results so for kago on the road that is their V series of bikes of which the V4 RS is the top of the range you might have seen it around a bit yep that’s the one so what’s this then it’s kind of like the gravel version of Pat’s road bike unlike the V4 RS it is not overtly Arrow although it does look quite similar actually and shares many of the same lines and design features but kago are not making any claims as to how Arrow this bike is or isn’t however whilst on a road bike we don’t often talk about the importance of geometry on a gravel bike for me it’s pretty much everything certainly the defining characteristic this one falls into a category that I really like to be honest with you it is not trying to be a mountain bike nor is it so stable that were you to fall asleep while riding it when you woke up 45 minutes later you’d find that not only were you still upright you’re also still going in the same direction this bike has evolved from Road and cyc across geometry so it’s balanced it’s not Twitchy nor is it a steamroller you can see from kago cyclocross pedigree that in the right hands it can be ridiculously fast in Technical and muddy terrain but is also stable at faster speeds as well that’s helped in no small part as well down to Tire clearance increasing to 45 mm something that I have taken full advantage of basically I want to be able to run lower pressures to be able to roll more efficiently on bumpy sections I do appreciate that most fast gravel races apparently run 40 or 42 mil wat tires but these as well as the lower pressures going to give me a little bit more resilience I’m not going to be able to pre-ride the course I’m not going to know what’s coming up and so this is going to allow me to have a bit more confidence if I accidentally fly into a section going a little bit fast and then find the going gets chunky now they also come up really wide these ones as well on the 25 mil wide carbon grx wheels that I’m running too so that volume is going to allow me to run 26 PSI up front and 28 PSI at the back and sticking with the resilience theme you’ll see that I haven’t gone for Parelli’s lowest profile tread so these are the RC which is like one up from that the reason being if the race turns into a complete mud bath I’m not going to be slipping and sliding all over the shop I also don’t have the ability to take out a spare set of wheels with different tires on nor am I going to have the time to swap tires out should it turn muddy so um yeah basically that just means I don’t have to stress about [Music] it if you’ve watched our first look video of the new Shimano 12-speed grx di2 you will already have seen this bike and so it will come as no surprise to see that I have fitted it with shimano’s new 12 grx di2 group set I’m running it 2 by again as you can see most people have a preference as to whether they want one buy or two buy honestly I like both they both work great both have their Pros but when it comes to the higher speeds encountered when racing the one thing I do want is a bigger front chain ring so if I was running one by on here I’d have a 46 to at least this topof the range grx 820 chain set has a 48 to Big Ring which is spot on but it also means cuz I got a 31 to little ring I can run a close ratio cassette at the back that’s an 11 to 36 on there which is wicked when you’re scrabbling around in Crosswinds and the like now it’s also cool to say that you can fit a front derailer on this bike with a 45 mil Wide Tire in part that’s down to the new grx front derailer in part it’s also down some Deft engineering from colago to squeeze everything in you can actually run even bigger chain rings than this on here you can get a mechanical shift cable running through that chain State too so you can run mechanical shifting on this bike the kago g4x has three different cockpit options two of which are made from carbon and are one piece with all the cables neatly integrated inside one of them is kind of more Road oriented one of them is more gravel oriented this bike has the third option which is standard two-piece offering from DEA an aluminium stem and aluminium bars now I’d have been perfect ly happy running the one piece carbon cockpit this one is slightly less Arrow slightly heavier but it does have the advantage of being more adjustable although ironically I haven’t needed to adjust it at all because it fits me perfectly that two-piece easily adjustable cockpit I know will make some people very happy indeed as will I hope the threaded t47 bottom bracket that’s on here and as well as that a Universal derailer hanger and this is Tech that’s come over from mountain biking it means that bikes with it don’t have proprietary derailer hangers so should the worst happen and you break it when you’re away from home then you can find replacements quickly and easily now I was going to swap the saddle out for my usual cell Italian novas boost but I then rode this Catalia Green Tech model X and I saw no need to swap it out at all sure it’s like 100 something grams heavier than what I would usually run but it’s Mega comfy and you know what it’s one of those rare Bargains in cycling so it retails for £49 which is pretty good going for a saddle these days and it’s also made with Eco credentials there are no solvents no glue used in the manufacturer here and its carbon footprint is half that of a traditional saddle [Music] in terms of more race specific Logistics you can see I’ve only got one water bottle on this bike and that’s because I’m going to be racing with a Camelback Chase vest now you can fit more water in here but I’m just going to be using 1 and 1/2 L of precision fuel energy drink so the 1,000 Mig of sodium one for uh salty sweaters such as myself appreciate a lovely thought to leave you with um and then I’m going to have 500 MS water in my Camelback Podium bottle that’s as a pallet cleanser basically um and then having this Chase vest does mean that um I’ve got space to carry all sorts of other gubbins uh so I’ve got my spare tube in it I’ve got my top peak micro rocket pump uh what else I got CO2 multi-tool and then also slightly irritatingly got to take a phone as well which is not very racy but we found over the years that the best way for our filmmakers to keep track of presenters when we’re doing stuff is with straa Beacon so that’s what my phone is going to be doing um on silent of course don’t really want any phone calls mid race um in my jersey Pockets I’m going to have a GoPro on a stick so I can Vlog shiz yeah uh and then I’m also going to have a Precision Fuel and hydration Mega gel I’ve not used one of these before it’s basically a 300 G pouch of gel H now you fill it up yourself so uh I’m going to be decanting some of these in here um and then uh basically it means that you don’t have to worry about opening individual gels nor crucially do you have to worry about putting empty gel wrappers back in your pockets and it also takes away any risk excuse me of littering as well which is very important up front there is a bespoke very neat Mount that bolts directly onto the stem here to allow you to fit a head unit or whatever because I’m going to be running a GoPro on here to film stuff uh then I’ve gone for an aluminium K Edge Mount to allow me to fit My Wo on here as well it’s just absolutely bombproof and no messing around um in terms of woo head units you can see I’m using the slightly smaller more compact element bolt as oppos the slightly larger Ram the reason being I prefer it basically I don’t need the extra detail afforded by the larger screen in terms of mapping because I don’t need to see where I’m going I’m going to be doing laps as well um and I also hopefully I’m not going to need that even bigger battery life of the Rome if I do something’s gone terribly terribly wrong I haven’t even got much data on here either I want to know how long I’ve been riding for so that’s just to measure how much water or energy drink and fuel that I’m taking on board uh and then also I’ve got kilometers on here so I can see how far I’ve got left um and speed is on here well I mean I don’t really need to see that to be honestly but uh it’s on there for interest give me something to look at I’ve actually got that connected up to the grx by the way so um if I want to change screens I can do it from the little uh function buttons on the levers but I probably won’t use them to honestly cuz I literally just want to see kilometers and time cuz I’m very old so that is my kago g4x fitted with brand new grx give the uh video a like if you like the bike I mean I trust you do how could you not basically um anyway here it is all set up ready to roll for my Tilt at the gravel World Series you’ll be able to see how I get on in a video on gcn so make sure you head over there and check it out um as mentioned as well you can see a video on this new grx also on gcn actually so again make sure you check that out if you’re interested too otherwise all that’s left to be said I guess is uh what you think of the bike down in the comments and uh wish me luck I think I’m going to need it

    1. 5:02 The 2x – that's what separates the men from the boys… Ɑ: 😀

A more serious question: an 11-34T Ultegra cassette (CS-R8101-12) has HYPERGLIDE+ teeth. Does it offer a perceptible difference in shifting smoothness when compared with that 11-36T non-HG+ cassette (especially when combined with Di2)?

    2. The green tech saddle is not comfortable on long distance and it breaks. It looks super nice and it's eco but it's not race worthy.

    3. "Cuts the mustard"… Don't give up your day job, Si.

Also great to see the Selle Italia Green-X saddle, I have one on my race bike as I wanted something shorter than my normal setup.

    4. I've never used a wahoo but surprised they don't have a "share my location" feature like Garmin does. means one less phone. But that 'gram does need updating.

    5. I have that same saddle, it is good, it’s now on my adventure bike, a rigid Surly Krampus, but it came on my Niner RLT 9 Steel gravel bike, didn’t care for it on that, but for some reason it feels great on the Krampus. First time I’ve seen one mentioned in a bike video…..

    6. These GCN advertisement videos just get worse and worse if it wasnt for just keeoing cycling people employed i wouldnt even let my runtime play through these fukl videos.

You literally might as well read the brochure and watch this video on mute. Or just look at pictures in the brochure.

Literally zero value added in these videos

    7. You’d think that Colnago could sell bikes on reputation alone, but the number of paid promotional videos I’ve seen recently makes me wonder if they’re really as good as everyone seems to believe. Think I’ll stick to frame manufacturers that invest in bespoke design, fit and craftsmanship rather than marketing!

    8. so you've had a great result, coming in 11th but you're also disqualified and not racing the gravel worlds because the rules (at least of the 3 UCI gravel world series races I have participated in) state that no outside communication is allowed. sharing your location with your film crew via strava beacon is that type of communication
