I learned about walking date in Germany you plan to go on a date with a German and they are suggesting taking a walk around the city as a date plan [Music] really hi everyone you’re welcome back to my channel if you’re a returning subscriber how you doing and if you’re new to my channel maybe you just see my video for the first time I’m Wendy and I live in Germany in this video I’ll be talking about some German habits that I’ve picked up from living in Germany for 5 years yes 5 years so hopefully you find this video useful and helpful if you’re planning to visit or move to Germany or maybe you’re just a curious person like me we can all agree that one of the pecs of moving abroad is that you get to learn new skills and habits that are not common as in your home country and for me living in Germany for 5 years I can definitely say that I’ve picked up more than a few German Habs a couple of them I loved right away While others took me a while to adapt and I’m probably still trying to adapt to a few one of the German habits that I picked up is taking a walk and walking to a lot of places back in my home country people literally take cabs and buses to everywhere even when destination is just few meters away rather drive to that destination or take any public transport available down work working is seen as suffering stress you know something you do when you don’t have any other choice so moving to Germany it was totally different Germans love to work they work in the park you take a walk to the grocery store they take a walk to the bakery a lot of times they’re just walking to enjoy the sun I learned about walking date in Germany you plan to go on a date with a German and they are suggesting taking a walk around the city as a date plan really the weird thing is that I picked up this habit really quick I started to enjoy going for work working became therapeutic for me I started to see working as something I do to clear my head relieve myself of stress and stuff like that and it is actually now I’ll rather go for a walk around the city than sit down in the coffee shop and the likes and even when I find myself outside JY you know for vacation and stuff I rather take a walk around the city than relax in one Resort and stuff like that so my mom visited me in Germany from my home country and she was around for 6 months and she always had issues with walking to places with me which was expected I mean she was coming from Nigeria it could be small walks like going to the grocery store or taking a walk to the small Park in my street at some point she started to say oh no don’t worry you can go out stay back she would rather stay at home than work I think after 1 month I will wake up in the morning and I go to check on high in her room and she’s not there the first time I freaked out because I freaked out because she didn’t say anything to me the previous day about going out and then she comes back like an hour later and she’s like oh I went for a work I’m like really so after some time she started to enjoy it it became a habit she would go for money work she would go for evening work and it went on this way all true has St in Germany the next habit I picked up is making an appointment for everything so I was discussing this recently with my friend from my home country about the flexibility of our lifestyle back home and how we do more of spontaneous things compared to the Germans cattling and making an appointment for literally everything in Germany you want to hang out to your friends you have to make an appointment fix date fix time very important like weeks before you hang out when I want to make my hair in Germany I have to make an appointment like a months before the day I have to make my hair you can just show up at your friend’s house without making an appointment in my home country you can just open your door and you see your friend or relative visiting without any appointment and sometimes they don’t even call you on phone and no it doesn’t feel we it’s a normal stuff living in Germany I became the scatterling planning making an appointment type of job and I think it makes life easier kind of now I even make appointment before I call people on phone before I call you I like to text you is he okay if I call you on Saturday at 6 can I call you now so yeah you definitely pick this up when you move to Germany another German habit that I picked up is cycling or riding a bike before I moved to Germany I didn’t know how to ride a bike in fact I didn’t even know it was something that I’ll would ever be interested in and this is hugely because of the societal marginalization towards cycling in Nigeria people tend to associate riding a bike to being poor and then driving a car or owning a car means you’re rich so is this lack of awareness of the benefits of cycling and moving to Germany almost every home own at least one bike I used to say that everyone Cycles in Germany actually a lot of countries in Europe are big on cycling my professors classmates they all cycle to class I actually learned how to ride a bike in my first year in Germany so yeah you’re bound to pick up this wonderful habit of riding a bike or cycling if you ever moved to Germany and is it saying that once bike becomes your main mode of transportation there is no going back I don’t know how true that is I can’t confirm that another habit I picked up is airing out or ventilating my rooms coming from a country that is warm to hot all year round I mean the average temperature in Nigeria is between 24° to 30° C besides there are air conditioning ceiling fans standing fans to keep the room cool whenever it’s too hot unless the room is smelly maybe having some kind of weird smell there’s usually no reason to open the windows wide however living in Germany I’ve become an advocate for airing the rooms no matter what the weather is it’s winter or summer you always have to open your windows as wide as possible to let all the old air out a lot of times when you even move into a new apartment the landlord will always tell you to Heir the rooms every day at first this was not fun at all for me especially during the winter periods but right now if I have not a my room in the morning my day have not started I don’t know if it’s all in my head but I think the air becomes fresher and the room starts to smell fresher too another German habit I picked up is Recycling and whe separation Germans take recycling seriously they are very big on waste separation and recycling you probably notice the colorcoded beans for paper Plastics and the rest when you first arrived Germany I talked about this in my previous video on German culture shocks you should go and see it if you haven’t how this was different in my home country nobody talks about recycling in Nigeria we literally dispose our waste together no separation is done living in Germany I had to adapt to this waste separation system and honestly it was very hard for me I’m not even going to lie it took me a long while to adapt um there’s even this fun deposit system which I talked about in my previous video on recycling Plastics in Germany you should see it if you haven’t where you have to pay some deposit anytime you buy drinks in bottles and can and when you return your bottles by placing them in recycling machines you get your deposit back so you see Germany has put measures in place for this Recycling and whe separation and I had to pick this up since I’m also someone that loves organization and efficiency so those are the habits that I picked up from living in Germany for five years I love to know what you think what are your own experiences what are the habits that you picked up from visiting or living in a different country I mean it could be Germany it could be America the UK Canada and so on let me know in the comment section and don’t forget to click on the Subscribe button if you’re yet to subscribe
