the daily express 14-day tour of britain cycle race reaches glasgow where seven stage winner ian steele dons the leaders jersey while other riders make last-minute checkups away they go starting the 150 mile eight stage to newcastle with only 20 minutes separating the five liters after 800 growing miles but there’s no slightening of speed as they start the homeward journey to london nearing the border now and they’ve certainly taken a high road as they battle on uphill with dave bidwell of rumford who led for four days and 20-year-olian greenfield out in front refreshment time on the heavy pull-up hill as the riders cross the border into england a downhill stretch now and 47 miles to go to newcastle at this stage each leader tries in turn to pull away from his field and it’s dave bedwell with many past road racing victories to his credit or goes to the front last minute sprints as newcastle is reached and yes it’s dave bidwell romford’s rugged racer who wins the stage from teammate clive parker dave’s now in fourth place but there’s still 450 miles to go
