your first ever to the front stage and helping B to win it’s amazing I uh I don’t have any words for it um yeah we we had the plan to coming uh you know first weekend be there and uh I was in the break but we were good from the beginning and then uh Roman made the made the jump to the group and uh yeah I could help him and then um that was goody pce the the last climb because I was really on my limit and then I could you know do some turns on the on the flat run in but it was headwind very hard and the the the camera motorbike was be next to us so uh that made it made it extra hard but then uh yeah when the last raight was so so long and I could see the peton and it was just head down and uh pushed the the L energy out of my legs you are you are still new in Pro cycling what you come from coming from another sport you had the biggest race at the tour and you just were a big part of the first win here you’re going to be and the Mayo Shong your teammate do you can you believe what you’ve been part of uh maybe in a in a few hours I’ll realize it but uh yeah now it’s just uh unbelievable thank you for what a start for the young Dutchmen what a start for Roman B and I tell you what what a start for the home nation as well well the home nation of the race of course not where they are for this Grande par a phenomenal display by team DSM Fairman post NL and their first statement at this R Robbie in four years yeah since 2020 ago that they won three stages in that edition of the race but what a way to start for Roman B in his last tour to France and then with a debut talk from his team up the road with it the man of the match just by the way for Frank funden Brook what incredible ride for the 23y old but Roman what a feeling this must have been like final tour I’d love to Jag a stage win and you’d get it on stage one and he made the race he made it his own when he went out long range just jumped out of the Pelon and this is out ended what an absolute dream and to hold off the marauding pack like that as well Danny just to add a little bit of extra tension to the day I know we thought they were going to get caught didn’t we it was a headwind finish like they said but yeah what a ride from the two of them you would say it was a tactical master class from the team they’re in control day weren’t they active at the start of the day when the Riders were trying to get into the break had Frank Randon Brook there of course and then B coming across and what a wi like Robbie said in his final year his final toour of France he’s going to retire I believe after the doofan next year and then go into gravel racing yeah and he takes the yellow Jersey today and he manages to stay in the race because that was a near Miss at the end wasn’t it near Miss for wow I mean yeah I mean just an incredible day though today and I think it’s very clear that they had a plan to do that today you know right from the get-go they wanted to go on the attack we saw B in early moves and I think that plan when you have a plan on the bus before and a day like today on day one you’re always like not sure will it work won’t it work that could have gone better for them like Absol I know they got the win but the way they executed it everything about it was just perfection you know and I think if you look at at a team to say how is it helping Young Riders to come through it’s a fine fine example of learning and how to do it he’s such a popular Rider and with popularity in France comes that burden of pressure at the home race he’s finished second at the T of France of course in 2016 he’s won before today three stages at this race the last one though was seven years ago that’s quite a monkey to shake off his back isn’t it Robbie it it was a while ago you know what he does really well which is strange for a guy with a pal marz like his he plays the underdog really really well I mean people are just just cheering for him to win something he’s already got a you know a lot of Victories on his palz he’s had such a fantastic career but he seems to be that guy that everyone just loves him because he’s so Plucky and he looks unlikely to win so often goes close oh poor Roma didn’t win we love him to win one and today was his day but I’ve got to say I think on the other side of it the guys who were left in that small pelaton chasing they didn’t use enough of the Firepower that was available I think they severely underestimated R but and particularly Frank fund and Brook okay you think they got that wrong then yeah yeah and you were saying as we were watching it they were too worried about protecting their lead outs rather than actually just going for the victory there there were Riders sitting in Wheels with their chosen Sprinter and then we’ll catch them so we can save ourselves we’ll wait we want to do the perfect lead out and then they just never got there it became evident with 1500 meters to go they just weren’t doing enough to Peg them back and that is a massive missed opportunity I I got to say Walt’s team I think they did enough were others that did a lot less I think I think the GC teams have been looking at each other all day there was like there’s no understandable it is of course but I think when you look at w he’s a little bit restricted in what he can do with a team so he can’t have the full commitment from them and then Shrek at the same time mat is hanging on all day like he’s on his limit on every climb so they can’t bring any time back on the climb and then when you get to that point like right we can ride they started to ride but it’s just at the it’s at the right moment but the only moment they can do it on so it’s they’re in a really tough situation but I think in a group like that you don’t need a lead out you need commitment to bring them back first the Sprinter will s itself out exactly I tell you what though V Malisa bik saying that they’ve brought the most subpar W out they’ve ever brought to the TR of France I called it didn’t I he was third best of all the race he’s not subar he’s still looking absolutely flying it is W vard after all

    1. I would normally cheer for Lidl Trek and Mads Pedersen, but I must admit that for the last 10 K I was shouting and cheering for Romain. So many years in pro cyckling and never had a yellow jersey. Well he's in yellow now and he earned it the hard way. Such a well deserved win.

    2. Roman is a very popular rider. For a well loved Frenchman to win the 1st stage of a stacked Tour is just incredible. This Tour is looking to be the best for a long time 👍

    3. Really, really poor coverage at the end. Rather than showing all the riders on the podium with their new leaders jerseys they spend the time on Cav coming in 30+ minutes after Bardet.

    4. What I love about cycling races is that it makes people cheer for anyone from any team or any nation if they perform heroically. I dont think there is anyone who wouldnt be euphoric watching the two cross the line first. You dont really see that in other sports.

    5. Perhaps the peloton wanted the two to win or told to on their radios. Hard to imagine with less than 1500m to go and 15 seconds and not able to catch them.
