Meet the Riders (and their bikes!) from the Great British Escapades 2024.
The Great British Escapades – a series of off-road bikepacking events in Great Britain.
Sitting alongside the flagship Great British Divide they wanted to create some shorter, long-weekend events that would challenge new and experienced bikepackers alike. Events that start and finish in the same location, that never take you too far from civilisation and that can be completed in around three days.
With an early evening start, live tracking, and a checkpoint to pass through, the Escapades have many of the elements you would experience on an ultra-distance ride just in a condensed form at a little under 500km in distance.
For riders new to this form of cycling they provide a perfect introduction to longer distance rides – they are confidence inspiring and a great opportunity to perhaps prepare for your first ultra – refining your kit and honing your skills along the way. For the already experienced they are perfect for challenging yourself in terms of a quick finish time or focusing on areas of your performance that could be improved.
We all want to do 2000+km events but let’s face it, these are not always possible to fit in to your life and not everyone can dedicate all the training time let alone two weeks or so actually riding it. The Escapades are a great option to get your fix within a small amount of time and at a fairly modest cost.

[Music] he [Music] [Music] hey folks how you doing it’s Richard from B pack and Adventures I’m here in Kent not too far from Canterbury the Great British es pades yes I’m back again for the second year and for those who are new to the channel I’ve come back with a mounted bike this year I’ll drop a link to previous video if you want to go find a little bit more about the bike last year rode on a gravel bike going be riding a little over half an hour for was looking good about a few people what not yet arrived probably about 30 on the table now Kevin you all right yeah you yeah excellent how’s it going all [Music] right I was going to say D I was there questions at the end well that depends how tired I am how tired I am questions I mean yeah we we might both we just like looking at one another so going to take a little bit of a look the bikes that are in the car park ready for the Great British escapades in just over an hour’s time just coming up to quter 4 starts at five and this is my bike propped up against somebody else’s it’s a specialist epic Evo as you see got it facing the wrong way around but you know the score tailin pack top tube Garian 540 solar got an exposure l in the fun that’s the Toro Mark 13 and a few things hanging off the front uh Rock shocks it’s a rebber RL I think it is 52 cette 32 chain Wing plenty of agility for a Ride Like the Great British escapades and the North and South D which we’ll be riding on this weekend move along this side as well some Victoria Merkel tires there just spotted that’s going to be my next purchase down the line still got my factory tires on one Ground Control surely not the best ones in the world but don’t want to buy things they’re staying on perfectly good oh look at this gold chain old cassette I’m just looking at the different setups here predominantly gravel bike I think I made that mistake last year or that’s at least a mistake for me that’s why I was VI it maybe not four people I’m sure not four people for me I thought I needed to could bit more capable so it’s the Moun bike this time I think we were you were off early cuz in fact I saw your video afterwards and I was like oh you were on I was working out when I woke up now it seems like it went late you were like filming Three Hills over as I was getting up I tell you what that stretch was very long it without food and drink and stuff and there’s a garage eventually slightly off the RO the BP yeah it’s a new bike yeah I’m loving it what’s yours then this is me bike is done the Escapade about five times yeah but only once with me so it’s a s what s Frontier okay and um it originally came with an SX drivetrain but it’s uh needed upgrading over the years um but it’s an absolutely solid bike and I’ve got a the Sund bike packing handlebar on oh yeah this is like a kitchen sink kind of thing exactly with the rrap um with the restrap um underneath there that just keeps the bar bag off the front a bit so my name is Dan um uh on C 91 yeah yeah um what is this your first time riding the esap or yeah yeah it is yeah first year first time yeah so forward to it yeah um so it looks like you got a titanium yeah got a curve um GMX plus um some uh curv wheels on as well dir Hoops yeah um 29ers uh so I’ve got a 2.35 on the front 26 on the back sh is loving your chain cassette yeah just s bit of bling you know um quite good so uh yeah uh tail fin pack on the back and restrap uh bag at the front hi there you all right morning morning do you know I said I said morning I’m want to call you as well time riding great third oh okay the second time now what can you uh tell me about your bike what’s your name first uh Harry Harry Johnson yeah uh yeah third time on the uh on the route the first time I did it on a on a road bike oh which wasn’t wasn’t very comfortable it was just yeah sensible that’s probably a better word but it sounds B coming from you I just never done a I’ve never done an event like this all right and uh it was the only bike that I had yeah what’s the worst that can happen if it was really bad I could pull out but yeah turns out when I start something I’m too stubborn to pull out even if it’s looking at you by now you got something a bit more appropriate yeah and then last year my hard tail yeah uh which was I mean it was comfortable like I finished it pretty fresh part from being tired yeah but I don’t think it was as fast I think this is obviously kind of in between and I uh I used this on the Rebellion way nor Nork yeah a couple of weeks ago but I had 35 mil like gravel tires so they were like slick on the top yeah just a tiny bit of tread so I thought that was going to a little bit and if you do a little turn for the camera it looks like um you’re not carrying much no sleeping gear or anything so you look like you’re going to no was it kind of trimmed it down every time I’ve yeah how how Trimm do you go that’s the big question is it every time you ask yourself you find yeah I’m sure I’ll find the limit eventually but I find if you just I could put a saddle bag on yeah and then I just I just bring more stuff yeah and it wouldn’t really be any different no as if you kind of it always depends what you want from being in these events in it you need you have for you have for the adventure you have to get around quickly and that kind of determines what you bring in with you yeah well have a good ride Harry thank you hi there you all right how are you yeah good thank you look nice comfortable in the corner yeah stay out the way staying out of the way ready to go yes really looking forward to it there you all right how it yeah good thanks yourself this your bike here yeah what’s what’s your name and what kind of bike you riding on today yeah the Venable on one whip it did well last year went for the kind of comfort with a bit of speed of being rattled to pieces for the whole time which that’s that’s where I tend to struggle I can relate to that yeah jaring yeah it’s a bit of a Franken bike with hand bars and everything nice little T position there so than my what’s what’s your name sorry Elaine borrows done this one before yes but didn’t finish cuz it went far too close to home all right and I and I decided home was a better option than waiting out the storm that was headed our way oh okay it was this a few years ago by is the 2019 one I hear so much about might have been yeah hi there all right this is your bike yeah it is yeah yeah what’s your name sorry Polly Polly yeah what can you tell me about your bik then um you want to it’s got well um some lovely carbon keeps in it yep uh this restrap bag keep raving about how much fit in it yeah some people here to tr maybe not as much as yeah no no no um what so you you not got sleeping gear or anything you can just kind going to get through it as fast as you can Polly no that’s the plan yeah yeah okay I hope you have a good ride thank you very much [Music] [Music] [Music] oh

Great British Escapades – the bike I rode this year ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y65T7iZX7o )
Vittoria tyres are terrible. I've had multiple road bike versions and they've failed miserably. They may have improved since then of course.
Great video Richard.
