good morning bimblers and you join me at sulfur keys we’re doing a sulfa bimble today I think it’s going to have a little bit of a political slant looking at the big book of bimble anyway let’s stop messing about and let’s [Music] bimble washed in clean by a Riverside they told you they told you the news kept so cold in the blackest TI if only if only you knew I’ve heard what theyve said ignored what I read and look to the bright s so here’s to the bad times forgotten in good lives I will ion I won’t let you down I I I won’t let you down I’ll take off my shoes and dance to the good news broken Smiles they will turn it Bren smes they will turn it take off your shoes and dance to the good news left too long in the passing [Music] time the kou’s off again bimblers rather a nice day I certainly know how to pick these days to come out bimbling don’t I going have to put some suntan lotion on in a minute you join me in wh Cemetery back in the mid 1800s it was becoming apparent to those in charge you know the clever chaps that ran everything well they thought we’re running out of places to bury people you see back before all this industry people used to live in small villages they used to go to their local church and everyone would just be buried in the church yard wouldn’t they and if you think about inner city churches they don’t even have church yards do they let alone graveyards so what they needed was a municipal cemetery and that’s what Salford Corporation did with the help of the first MP for Salford that was Joseph Brotherton you see In 1832 they changed the way the Electoral Wards worked wasn’t just representatives of small villages it was one big representative of cities and bers and the first MP for Salford was Joseph brother they didn’t just change the Electoral Awards though they changed who could vote they made it so that land owners could vote and farmers and shopkeepers and anyone that paid over10 in rent it meant that not just the really rich could vote but also the comfortably well off women still couldn’t vote but I imagine that Josey Brotherton would have been in favor of those women voting he was actually the first vegetarian MP in the UK seems quite woke you know bit of a hipster I imagine him smoking a rollup and having a mullet and listening to King gizard and the lizard wizard Not only was he the first vegetarian MP in the UK and the first MP for Salford but he was also the first person buried here at whis Cemetery cuz it was all his idea and because it was all his idea he has to have the biggest Monument doesn’t he right massive he’s not the only famous person to be buried here at we Cemetery though you got one of the bosby babes one of the manunited players that died in the Munich air disaster that would be Eddie Coleman can’t seem to find his grave but I did find the grave of Charles Hal he started the Hal Orchestra that’s the orchestra that used to play at the free trade Hall in Manchester they now play at the Bridgewater Hall it’s all very cultured here in Salford you know dim scenes of a better light spoken in loud tones to you well I’ve heard what they’ve said ignored what I read and look to the bright sides so here to the bad times forgot good I think I was a bit Hasty with my comments about suntan lotion bimblers it’s gone a bit overcast hasn’t it I think I might hang fire we’ve reach St Luke’s Church here in Salford you know all of church bimblers we visit one every week don’t we but the Manchester United shiny sticker of church Architects and Victorian architects in general is to George Gilbert Scott isn’t it and in 1865 he designed St Luke’s here in Salford 850 buildings he either tarted up or designed from scratch 500 churches and 39 Cathedrals you’d think they’d all be down in London in the big smoke but we find them everywhere don’t we bimblers we went to one last week in real didn’t we as a call back to we Cemetery the organist de from 1947 up until 2006 was a Mr Chadwick and Mr Eric Chadwick he was also the organist for the Hal Orchestra and he used to run the choir as well and being that we’re talking about politics in all of our portages today bimblers on the 18th of February 1879 an emiline gon married a Richard panker to become emiline panker here at St Luke’s Church emilene panker was the suffragette that got women the vote in 1918 she’s the world’s most famous feminist she was listed as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century according to Time Magazine not bad for a last from my side life was left alone in days that felt so long being on our own was [Music] irresistible thoughts kept to myself shared with someone else silently replied to most in aible Qui [Music] Imagination Running Away with Me Secret and so we reached Langworthy Park AKA chimney pop Park why is it called chimney pop Park well it’s slightly raised so all you can see is the tops of the houses and the chimney pots it hasn’t always been a park it used to be a Reservoir High field Reservoir but it wasn’t one of those reservoirs where you dig down it was one of them that you build up back in 1871 the sulfur Corporation struck up a deal with the man Chester Waterworks committee to supply sulfur with an amount of water every day they would have to pay for that amount of water whether they used it or not so the sulfur Corporation thought if we’re going to pay for it we’re going to have it we’re not just going to give the money to Manchester and let them keep the water so they built some reservoirs and they built this one here Highfield Reservoir AKA Liverpool Road Reservoir in 1903 they struck up a new deal with the Manchester Water Works committee which meant that the water was metered they’d only pay for what they used so they didn’t need a reservoire anymore but what do you do with it well at first they were going to turn it into a boating Lake just what Salford needs they spent £ 2,500 on converting it from a reservoir to a boating Lake and then they changed their mind they just wanted a normal park with a Bowling Green and a playground and all that kind of stuff so they spent another £9,500 on pumping out all the water and filling it up with dirt and it’s a very lovely park it’s quite curious looking down on everyone’s houses if you watch classic Coronation Street on itv3 like me and Mrs bimble you may have seen a few weeks back Sita came to meet her a strange family here at chimney pot Park but they didn’t turn up she just sat on the bench getting soaking wet in the rain anyway I was watching that with Mrs bimble going that’s chimney pot park that’s chimney pot Park but it’s not the only park around here you know there’s another one just around the corner let’s bimble sometimes it was nice for a change make believe this wasn’t so strange I’m telling you my secrets again imagine that she still here with me imagine just how good that could be I’m telling you my secrets again I know it’s just pretend but I’m telling you my secrets again [Music] [Applause] what a life to lead and so bimblers we reach our final Portage bu Hill Park just like we Cemetery sulfur Corporation Commander a little bit of BU Hill Park to bury some people that happened back in 1590 because of the plague at the intersection between whis Lane and eckl’s Old Road would have been a plague pit between 1825 and 1827 a big mansion was built here for a fellow by the name of Sir Thomas Potter he was the first mayor of Manchester and he made a lot of money in the cotton industry he was a member of an exclusive club called the portoco library in Manchester it’s still there some of its pre previous members were John Dalton Sir Robert Peele and Eric canar Sir Thomas Potter wasn’t content with just being part of One exclusive club though he had to have another exclusive Club within the exclusive Club a club that he called his little circle it was a group of non-conformist Christian liberals all members of the porterco library they would all get together to bring about change in Manchester and Salford and the surrounding areas and sway political opinion and even set up a newspaper the Manchester guardian or as we call it today the guardian that was officially founded by a John Edward Taylor but John Edward Taylor was a member of the little circle and a member of the ptico library other members of the little circle were Thomas Potter’s Brother Richard Potter he was the MP for wigging and a fellow by the name of John shuttleworth not the one you’re thinking about not the fell from the York C te adverts and another fellow by the name of Joseph Brotherton the UK’s first vegetarian MP and the first person to be buried at whis Cemetery so Thomas Potter had all of his influential friends and he was a member of two exclusive clubs he had all of his money from the cotton industry he was the first mayor of Manchester and he’d been given a Knighthood so if he was having a mansion built it had to be designed by a leading architect of the day someone like Charles Barry the fellow that designed the houses of Parliament unfortunately they’re doing some building work to the house today and it looks like they’ll be doing it for the next few weeks so maybe sometime next year when they finished it off we’ll come back and have a look shall we we can do that you see it’s no longer a private estate as of 1902 sulfur Corporation bought it so you didn’t have to be a posad to come to BU Hill Park you could be a scruffy booger like me apparently Ellis Larry used to come and walk around it and he used to paint match talk men and match do cats and dogs so he knew about scruffy Lads as well [Music] [Applause] [Music] come [Music] [Music]
