in Cambridge tonight a young woman out riding her bike is dead she was involved in a crash with a box truck sky ranger was over the scene this morning right around the intersections of Hampshire and Portland streets that’s where we find NBC 10’s Michael Rosenfield Michael what have you learned about this Glenn this is the second time something like this has happened here in Cambridge just this month this morning a woman on a bicycle was killed in a crash with a box truck it happened right here at this intersection right near Kendall Square investigators say the truck and the bicycle were traveling in the same direction here on Hampshire Street around 8:20 this morning the truck turned onto Portland Street and collided with a 24-year-old woman on the bicycle she was killed she is a resident of Cambridge the truck driver remained on the scene the truck belongs to a company out of Seabrook New Hampshire we have reached out to the company for a comment a couple of weeks ago a woman from Florida was killed she was also on a bicycle and was hit by a truck and a very similar accident at a different intersection here in Cambridge the organization Cambridge bicycle safety tells me they’ve been fighting for more protections including more bike lanes and safer intersections but the Cambridge City Council recently voted to delay by two years a slate of safety improvements I’ve definitely had a lot of close calls uh the protected bike lanes are great but as we’ve seen now in the past few weeks um the there are more things that we could do with the intersection specifically there’s infrastructure that can be put in to slow down trucks and other vehicles like cars too investigators haven’t said if any charges will be filed against a truck driver involved in this morning’s accident everything is under investigation live in Cambridge Michael Rosenfield nbc10 Boston

    1. Exact same crash both times. The bike lanes don't sound "protected" , 2 women died, the drivers must carry this on their consciences. Very sad when a community is sold on an upgrade it is left to CAD programs and ppl lacking simple traffic and safety knowledge to plan and build them. This bike lane trend is not well thought out…proven by 2 deaths which occurred with box trucks and bikes traversing intersections. Seems obvious something is missing from the "protected" bike lane equation. Namely protecting bike riders and drivers.

    2. There has to be a common sense required to ride in traffic. You may have the right of way, but your body will lose when confronting a motor vehicle. The light says walk, doesn't mean you walk blindly, because it's your right. There is a bike lane, but that doesn't place a barrier around you. It sucks that a young lady died, and that a driver must carry that for the rest of his life. Everyone isn't special, no matter what the media tells you. You have to take care of yourself, and be responsible for your life.
