what’s the difference between a bike that costs $150 a bike that costs $1,500 and a bike that costs $155,000 well we’re going to find out Mayday M I’m out of Gears this was your moment to shine I did Shine the stopwatch is going to impr I’ve shine wow right easy tiger [Music] Ah that’s all I’ve [Music] got pinell one of the most lusted after bike brands have just released a new version of their all conquering road bike the Dogma F now previous versions of this bike have racked up seven Tor of France WIS in just 12 years and this new one is supposed to be even better fast hell yes cheap hell no prices of the new bike start at $14,500 this one is actually ever so slightly more than that premium materials used throughout incredible engineering expertise and development time have gone into this bike is it worth it though cuz you see this bike is also a Pinella we picked it up second hand for a fraction of the price and I tell you what you get a lot for your money here it’s got a carbon fiber frame still it’s got really good quality Shimano altegra gears on it as well it’s a it’s a lot of bite and then well then there’s also this [Applause] [Music] one we picked this one up secondhand as well for a fraction of the price of this one and you know what like it’s got drop handle bars it’s got Gears it’s got brakes it’s got tires with air in you’re basically just trying to say it’s a bike it is it is a bike in order to get one cheap enough we have had to go vintage haven’t we quite seriously vintage we literally could not find a brand new bike with a low enough price tag to find out what the difference is between these bikes we need to put them to the test and over the course of this video we’re going to find out just how much faster this bike is compared to this bike and this bike but not only how much faster it is but also why there is a problem there isn’t there cuz there’s three bikes and two Riders well I’ve got that covered this is Patrick he looks like he means business isn’t he he looks flowing serious who’s ring what bike I hear you ask well I’ve got brown envelopes to sort that out [Music] Patrick ooh he’s on the mid-range one that means there’s only the cheap and expensive one left oh my God so one of us gets to ride a brand new Pinella the other one gets to ride the Hedge bike I think I know which one I’d prefer okay up to three one two three [Applause] no damn it as we begin to set up on new bikes we hatched a plan on how best to test these bikes there are so many differences between them braking handling gears weight and aerodynamics so we will race them up a killer climb before seeing how fast we can ride them on the flat individually and in a straight line Sprint how big a difference will there be oh and if you’re wondering who Patrick is he is also an x-pro cyclist and he does actually talk and laugh as you’ll see when you watch our German language Channel gcn Alf deut where he is our new presenter now you might think there’s another issue here with this test and that is that a bike is only as good as it Rider and therefore it’s perfectly possible for a $150 bike to go a lot faster than a $155,000 bike with the right Rider on it but no we’ve considered this so all our bikes are fitted with power meters so if you all ride at the same power to weight ratio any difference in time is going to be down to the bike and not the rider what what’s per kilo Patrick let’s do 10 10 wow 10 watts or Watts P keilo let’s maybe let’s maybe dial it back just a shade maybe like 4 and a half I’ll go with four and a half four let’s see four and a half what’s m Keila [Music] okay andbe shifter is not the quickest or easiest to modern ones I also don’t have very many gears on this bike I’ve got 12 which is half what Alex has got and almost half what Patrick’s got as well good I fine I I’m really sorry for anyone that’s German I think it’s worth 1,500 feels comfortable and it’s really light actually so good for climbing it’s my time to shine and represent this bike in the best light possible cuz I mean it would be apping if I lost right three two one let’s go it’s everything I expected it to be and more this beautiful bike to [Music] ride so I do have a pretty important point to breath here because I took it very personally when s beat me in the bicycle video when we raced up cheddar Gorge but honestly it was just by chance that he picked the rubbish bike I’m out of Gears Mayday M day I’ve got them in my sights now I can see them Patrick is just cashing sigh oh there he is there he is what [Music] wrong you know what I I made the biggest mistake ever I underestimated my competition I gave you guys actually quite a big gap cuz I thought I was going to catch you really fast right we’ll save our times to the end of this video cuz we’ve got more challenges to come that is true do you know what the one thing I really want to do I want to weigh these bikes okay come let’s get the scales drum roll please with pedals and Wahoo mount it is I’m going to guess 7.3 it 7.2 ooh 7.2 there you go that is proper light for an arrow bike isn’t it get that bottle off and the W get your bottle off I reckon 78 76 ooh 8.94 okay that’s better it’s under nine yeah you can’t have it all come on then I’m going to need some help lifting mine 7.5 7.5 it’s a chunky boy go isn’t that weird that they’re all about equidistant the part yeah just a shame the price isn’t the same but what that’s not what it’s all about Okay so we’ve established the my bike is the lightest out of the three no great surprise eh it’s not really is it but what is interesting is that your bike could be lighter isn’t it so Pell have shed 102 G from this Frame set compared to the previous one by changing the material they’ve used it’s a a different type of carbon fiber but actually most as far as I can gather of the other design changes have been about improving aerodynamics it’s about making your bike faster at any speed over about 20K an hour isn’t it I think it’s important for everyone that they realize that’s how they’ve gone about trying to make a bike faster and it’s not just about making it as light as physically [Music] possible okay time Trail next and it’s what Superbike manufacturers are looking for increased speed we want to go faster for Less effort what we’re going to say now there’s no power to8 ratio here cuz it’s all aerodynamics should we just say we’ll pick a wattage Patrick how many watts should we do let’s do around 300 300 oh he’s he’s he’s going easy on us yeah I was going to say yeah no more 10 watts per kilo let me just try and remember my German D SP almost terrible eyes go wow all right easy tiger 300 WS nothing for this mean machine you know what I actually feel pretty quick on this bike cuz it’s flat I don’t need to change gear that’s a bonus go Ah that’s all I’ve [Music] got no one’s here to Hold Me Up 3 2 1 let’s go I mean just riding knowing that you got an aerrow bike gives you that mindset and it’s puts it to the Forefront of your [Music] mind I feel like I’m making progress I’m getting closer to [Music] them wow I where were you like what were you doing get lost I was literally just behind you I made the same mistake again of underestimating your performances but this was your moment to shine I did Shine the stopwatch is going to prove that I’ve shined do we have do we have another test to go we do I thought you like this one guys a straight out Sprint three 2 one go [Music] [Music] I got a bit scared when we were going that fast well we I mean I I think a lot of that came down to the shifting there didn’t it like the way you went off the line just like ding ding ding ding ding no mostly legs we are warm and dry which is great news it turns out that no matter how much money you spend on a bike you still get wet if it rains uh but we will give you some proper results now okay you ready guys of course I’m ready okay so the difference on the climb the cheap bike was 34 seconds slower than the mid-range bike which was 14 seconds slower than the super bike and then on the flat the cheap bike was 10 seconds slower than the mid-range bike which was 7 Seconds slower than the super bike so there wasn’t really a vast amount in it on the flats which surprises me it surprises me and well it doesn’t surprise me because we all saw the rain jacket you were wearing Alex do you regret that now no I don’t regret it because I still won and I had the luxury of a rain jacket on but it highlights something quite important that if you’re going to spend loads of money on a bike perhaps reserve a bit for aerodynamic clothing at the same time I think yeah put a bit of money aside for a rain jacket as well now for the Nerds out there my rain jacket will have increased my coefficient of drag or CDA by approximately 0.045 which over the duration of our test course will have cost me in the region of around 20 seconds yes I’m a plunker but I’m a dry plunker at that now does it mean that the super bikee isn’t worth it that’s the question to my mind it depends how much money you’ve got doesn’t it that’s what I was going to say it is better and therefore it is worth it like you can measure the difference so for performance oriented Riders that’s a win but most importantly for me you can feel the difference with every pedal stroke and every gear shift and every time you pull the brakes it’s undeniable top spec bikes like this one are fantastic pieces of equipment are incredible to ride but I actually think one of the best bits about today is that we had Patrick and his kind of more mid-range affordable bike highlighting that you’re kind of close in terms of performance or come along those lines but for way less money I think the fact that the three of us have gone out for one bike ride all together all on totally different levels and performance of bike but all at a great time is the big takeaway for me just as well that the strongest rider was on the slowest bike though I mean to be fair no I mean this this bike will not win you the tour to France but you can have an awful lot of fun on it can’t you basically and that bik won’t win you the T of France either but you can do basically anything on it that one will win you the to I think he would have let Patrick loose to release his full potential I think on the middle bike he would have just beaten me still so having ridden these three bikes at different price points does that mean that we think we found a sweet spot for price versus performance I think I’ve got an idea in my head of a price do you guys have one as well I got an idea I’d like to know what you viewers think about this get involved in the comments section at what price point do you get the most value so that tradeoff between performance and money Patrick what do you think I would say 3,000 3,000 we going with okay I was going to go less I was going to go 2,000 I was going to say 2,000 right get involed in the comment section down below give the video a thumbs up if you’ve enjoyed it and Patrick thank you so much for braving the English weather I mean you’ve seen the best of it today haven’t you if you want to see more of Patrick actually head over to gcn Al deut and subscribe and check out Patrick’s videos they’re going to be out soon

  1. Dollars?
GCN obviously going full on American now.
Well at least they may stop this kilometres (or I suppose kilometers) obsession from a country which has miles on its signposts.
Oh dear, the dying days of the station…..

  2. No difference. Marketing and your pocket income companies pay you to push sales 😉 let's be honest you betrayed your viewers… just to make some extra $$$

  3. I just bought a used (90ies I think) KTM with almost too wide but new gravel tires on it for a similar price of the peugeot and it is way more fun than my last "cool" bike I had in my teens.

  4. Truth be told the sweetspot is mid range but with a 75% discount 2nd hand. My 1st road bike mid range 2022 model. RRP 2.2k > £560 paid. Upgrade to GP5ks, tpu, carbon wheels for £300 Thats you sorted for £860

  5. $3500 is the ideal bike! You could get a slightly older Specialized Diverge Pro and put road tires on it if need be. That would get you the road/gravel combo.

  6. "If we all ride at the same power-to-weight ratio, any difference in time is gonna be down to the bike, and not the rider"

Well, according to your own research, aerodynamics play a huge role in speed, where weight is only significant when accelerating. I assume you guys don't all have the exact same aerodynamic profile (especially considering only one person is wearing an aero helmet)?

P.s love the videos otherwise, but this one seems not that scientifically sound, albeit still fun.

  7. I bought my current bike back in 2005 for 1300 uk pounds , a Giant TCR -1 and I still ride it… and found it to be super to ride compared to anything else up to that point. I would say you would need to spend 3-4 thousand uk pounds to get to a point where you or I would say the same again

  8. I remember back in the late 1990s when you could buy a road bike ready to race for $1,500. You would get an aluminum frame with race geometry, Shimano Ultegra groupset and of course aluminum wheels with 700 x 23 clincher tires. I raced on a Fuji Team bike, Then a Cannondale Cad series frame with Shimano Dura Ace 7700 .
Cyclists didn't need to mortgage their house for a race bike.
