The Keepers Corner is back and we’re filming in Cologne for a special Euros episode!

Before we start, we just want to highlight Manuel Neuer for Germany. He’s about to break Gianluigi Buffon’s all-time appearance record at the Euros and it’s in his home country, what a guy!!!

In this episode, we’re going to be analysing Jan Oblak, Dominik Livakovic and Koen Casteels, but instead of calling them ‘errors’, we like to see what they could’ve done better to improve their actions in the build-up to conceding the goals.

Elsewhere, there’s been some BIG saves from stoppers and no more so than Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian number one produced 11 SAVES in his teams 1-1 draw against Czech Republic which is the most by any keeper at the tournament.

Our final action was to highlight the Italian main man Gianluigi Donnarumma who was in inspired form as his side were beaten 1-0 by Spain, but it definitely would’ve been more if it wasn’t for him!

As always, let us know in the comments your thoughts on what else you want to see, we’ve got an idea ourselves for the next ep…

[Music] hello everybody Welcome to Keepers corner now we have got plenty of saves and mistakes to go through for you today but as we are sitting alongside the river Ryan how beautiful is that W amazing here in Cologne guys phenomenal it is absolutely phenomenal to be fair and it’s absolutely roasting um it would be remiss ofous not to start with a German Le Legend before we talk about Manuel no obviously let’s have a little little look at this list of top goalkeeper appearances for the Euros um W that is some list of goalkeepers isn’t it yeah I mean I would have liked to have done some work with any of these guys but um I think we be wrong of us when you see the list not to talk about the guy who he’s going to pass tonight yeah in terms of Buon um Italian Legend um won everything he is to win in the game uh at International level but Noya it just shows you he’s passed the test of time but I think for goalkeeping officios out there there’ll be a couple of names on that list Ral Patricio at third very good yeah excellent goal he’s still at the tournament not number one now obviously um which could be a little bit of a surprise for you to throw in there and certainly the one that surprised me most were isacson for Sweden but it just shows you that the level of goalkeeping and and actually the standards of the teams because you’ve got Czech in there you’ve got Isaacson in there and you’ve now got Casper Michel that you wouldn’t say are actually playing for the the bigger Nations I’d say Peter cze pet C’s probably the surprised one in there with the Czech Republic absolutely fantastic achievement so right let’s get into it then Manel no we’re going to break down exactly what kind of a goalkeeper Manel noer was uh we got a couple saves to show you as well which really does typify what he was um and for me what he is just such a frontf footed um he anticipates everything he’s aggressive it’s his head position body position everything he’s got it all hasn’t he this guy when he were in the peak or at the peak of his powers was the best goal he still far off the peak of his powers I’d say now do you agree no but he’s you he has to use all his game knowledge and experience now to get into positions he’s obviously not as quick as what we seen in this action here because this action here he in a good position at the near post he has to be ready for a side foot finish for a cut back and then right what am I doing next and this then typifies why he was the best it’s the bit I love about this is he he scans he’s scanning and he’s waiting he’s waiting and as soon as you see the ball coming out he is out as quick as he Poss he’s read it before the player even knows that he’s on onto his toes and that’s what makes him make the the spread and the block doesn’t it yeah he’s aware for the first cutback action but from that moment on his Speed and Agility to get across the go goal and then this is what typifies him big Brave strong block spread head position the guy will unbeatable unbeatable and you know he covers the ground so quickly at the point of contact he’s two yards away and he’s actually covered eight 10 12 yards yeah um I’ve got another save you got if you want to it’s not Euros related it is uh Bayern Munich against Arsenal if you want to go and search this up on YouTube it was a save you made against Theo Walcott um I personally think one of the best saves you’ll genuinely is just outrageous strength range W it was phenomenal yeah it was a good save we we we just had a look at it off camera obviously we’re focusing on the Euros now but um if you went into his best bits I think you could be sat there for about three hours yeah for a while right then first mistake slash could have done better com from Dominic lakovic um wat is a good ball into the box the lad’s got the flick on um but he’s kind of not really sure what is it a scoop is it he just gets it all wrong doesn’t he he’s got it all wrong and it’s a real good one for everybody watching young or old um to try and really learn from this because as a goalkeeping coach this is something that I had to try and get out of the majority of goalkeepers I would have worked with especially when you’re working with the younger age group because it’s not a scoop it’s not a turnout with his left hand the action that he’s tried to do I would have described this to to anybody I were working with he’s tried to be a wicket keeper here rather than a goalkeeper and when you take your hands away from your body into this position I know I’m doing it higher and not lower just for you to see on the screen but that’s a wicket keeping action as a goalkeeper you always need another barrier behind you Wicket keeping you never needed to do that so here he should really from the set position hold there now and instead of leading with the hands he has to lead with the foot or chop the foot and use his left hand yeah I I totally agree I think he what he’s done is he’s kind of got little bit planted as well and he’s thinking I can just sort of fall over here and do these balls come so fast they’re going to zip off his head they’re going to zip off the ground and before you know it they’re pass you and I think that’s his problem as well here but I think that’s why when you see that with the experience has to tell you that it’s a good ball in it’s quick if it’s a flick on because it’s an inswinger it’s coming up me with pace so you’ve not got the chance I I think he can even take his as soon as that look there here where he’s about to head it I think he has to be taken half a step read reading the situation sit half a step to his left just as he’s about to make contact and these are the positions where I think if he heads it and flicks it into that far corner you hold your hands up and go it’s a good it’s a good finish you have to pick a section of the goal that you are going to cover and say if it comes in this section I’m going to make this save and you have to pick that near post section yeah we know the goal’s a big goal and you can only at most really cover four or five yards with the abilities and the agility and the reflexes and everything you’ve got but when you see the actual clip from behind the goal because he goes into the scoop mode and he doesn’t chop his leg he doesn’t use his left hand to make the save his head his head positions he’s not looking at the ball and because it’s Wicket keeping it’s a belly flop and you end up totally out the picture not looking at the ball and it just looks actually what it is very very awkward because he’s tried to Wicket keep rather than goalkeeper education yeah agreed okay then next goal comes from Belgium versus Slovakia it’s Cen castile’s um first of all massive call from Belgium not taking TBO CTO out of the tournament I don’t know what’s gone on behind the scenes but in my eyes if you’ve got one of the best goalkeepers in the world you have to take him tournament W simple as that so pressure is on for Coen cases isn’t there massive pressure massive boots to fill uh you’ve got two premier league goalkeepers sitting on the bench this goal first of all I think he has to do better with the palm and second of all he has to do better with this rebound doesn’t he yeah I think obviously going into the game massive pressure you’re trying to fill cis’s boots and you’re expected certainly to go deep into the tournament for Belgium so the pressure’s on but the F the first part of the action um is is is an action you’d receive in training uh 100 times thousand times a week and I think this is the point where where he makes the first mistake he’s got to be bigger and braver and and if you’re going to Parry it’s a soft Parry for a two touch pickup for you that I agree with that because that is the exact exerise exercise you would do every day 20 30 40 times wouldn’t you every single day it’s a cut back and it’s a first time finish and you turn you open up and you react to it but what you don’t do is you don’t panic you do not panic you stand up tall and you either try and catch it comfortably or if you are going to Parry it you parry it way over there depending on the pace of the ball coming at you and it was a fast ball you could really get that up in the air out towards the 18 Yard Box could you at least if you but you know as an experienced goalie you’ve made a real good point this is General stuff in terms of early stage work in terms of a session little movement pattern sharp action back and if you are going to spill it it’s a quick it’s a soft action so you’re there for seconds and if not it’s a big Parry but what he does have to making a a a real mess of it if we’re honest because he doesn’t go to catch it so it’s soft he doesn’t go to Parry it so it’s a long way it compounds the mistake so he’s thinking I’ve made a bit of a mistake of this but instead of being calm and then using your frame and a bit of experience and holding his position because it’s a tough angle and um and it’s bouncing it’s a it’s it’s like a half it’s not half volley it’s like a volley a side foot volley really tough finish is he’s not going to generate much pace so there stop yeah stop back and and just be big and you know what that ball probably bounces into you and if the rest of your teammates can’t get get a goal you start the first game of the tournament clean sheet nil nil you’re happy but he’s got to do so much better on the first and back himself with the training that you do and on the second bit right stop hold use your frame use your size you can see there on that clip he’s ran past the front post he’s ended a yard two yards past the front post cuz he’s still running he’s still moving when the players are like I agree with you there once you get in line with that front post and he’s about to K just stand still back yourself Big Frame try and react to something if you can and if he would have done that he would have been able to flick that leg out and maybe kick it over all wide honestly I think if he would have held his position now I think the ball Just Hits him because it’s such a tough finish so he’d be really disappointed with the first action for sure but then don’t panic Cal the best ones are Cal so it’s a poor first action but he compounded it by not standing and being big and holding his position and ultimately obviously got them off to a real poor start in the tournament okay wat 97 minute I think this was basically the last kick of the game last head of the game Yano black what is he he’s a really experienced goalkeeper this just goes to show how hard goalkeeping is you know we’re talking about Yano black here one of the one of the best goalkeepers in the one of top 10 goalkeepers in the world it’s a 97th minute of the game you just want him to Stand Tall stand big and he sank hasn’t he he sank into his goal and when the ball goes in he’s a step or two steps behind his line what I think this guy is one of the goal as you would have picked as a standout performer especially playing for if we not been too disrespectful the Lesser Nation Slovenia want him to come to the party to try and get out of the group stage they’ve managed to find a way to be one nil up against Serbia 90 plus 5 you can see for all you goalkeeping and football Geeks out there they’ve gone in a zonal setup which actually suits in this kind of action because as you can see Serbia have got eight men in the box and the goal is even up so you’re never going to be to pick everybody up but at that moment I think here for his experience and ability I think we have to touch on mentality yeah we have to touch on mentality because through the zonal setup and the amount of bodies that Serbia put in there they know they’re under pressure Slovenia and they would have been thinking we’ve got one of the best in the tournament here and they would have been expecting him to try and come and deal with the situation even though that’s an amazing ball in but if he can’t come and deal with a situation and we have to give credit for the quality of the the quality of the Cross is phenomenal his starting position dictates that he’s not going to come for the cross he is very tight to his line is he the second the ball’s whipped he wants to he wants to retreat to his line so coming for the ball is not an option I think if you started two or three yards off of your line and really made a statement to that guy taking the corner it half look at that and go I don’t think I can whip this onto the six yard box here cuz he’s going to come and punch this or or something absolutely but because he stood on his line he’s gone right I’m going to whip this right in that mix Zone there I’m going to put it in the mixer and this is going to be horrible but once he decides not that he’s not going to come for that he just starts retreating retreating and like you say by the time the guy gets the header and the ball goes in the back of the net you can’t do that can you you cannot be that far behind I think we we talk about this a lot on the show no matter what level you’re playing at you would not believe any of you watching when you see the contact of the header that is a yard behind his line and I talk about it a lot if you’re really going to improve in that situation and you don’t come for that cross you know it’s going to be a header I think obviously look we all know you can’t finish behind the line is a yard behind the line but I think you’ve got your hand position and your weight’s got to be better he’s actually took the real sa in the corner though this is my problem with it what is if you just square off and you back yourself if you still if you are still a yard off your line right and you square off nicely and you’re going right I’m going to set myself to try and react to whatever comes my way I think he makes that save because it’s not right in the corner it hasn’t hit the post and gone in it’s gone in two yards off that post it’s what we talk about but I think because he look the first bit is he’s behind the line we know that but if you think about the hand position being below the knees as well I’m like you be aggressive put the taker under some pressure because when he sees that big yellow shirt in there and you’re ins just inside the zones and he’s thinking well the goal is coming if I put it inside here and if you can get him to put it anywhere further outside you’re giving yourself time to react but also from that position I’m with you I think if is it probably at two yards and says right it’s not mine and you’re not going you’re not going to have time really to adjust deep at that point you spin on your left heel maybe get half a step back you’re a yard and a half hands are probably by your waist so you can react anywhere around you and I think if you did a reactive practice in training and put some mannequins up as you as your Slovenian zonal defense and you had the reactive board and somebody fired a ball in and you just got a little punch on a header and he and he just flattens off and reacts I think n out of 10 where that ball goes I think he’d save it I totally agree but it’s goalkeeping mentality here and we”re being very critical on one of the very very best we’re being very critical because this is how this conversation will go with Yan o black the day after the game absolutely I guarantee you as long as his honesty in that goalkeeping department which there should be in every goalkeeping Department he would be sat here next to his goalie coach now and you would have just said exactly the same stuff that would have been said to him I promise you that’s exactly how it would have gone and Yan would have sat here and gone yeah I totally agree that’s what I should have done I should have done that the debrief is exactly as we’ve had it and you’re right and I think for somebody who’s played so many games at such a high level in terms of Champions League Football League football and now International Football his manager would have wanted a little bit more I totally agree right we’ve got some buting saves for you okay okay W uh let’s let’s get a little bit of optimism in this show today yeah it’s not it’s not all down and out right madash villy Georgie madash villy 24y old valencian goalkeeper 6’6 monster um this is a very very good save we spoke on this show so many times about goalkeepers really getting after a save down low and this is this is absolutely beautiful this is what I want to watch because he’s going after a ball right and then there’s almost dislocating your shoulder and putting it right back there and still having the strength at range to be able to tip that ball around the post yeah a name a lot of uh viewers will have not seen or heard of for sure um for anybody who’s interested if you like he he plays for Valencia nearly had a 100 games for Valencia over the last three years 24 years old so he’s he’s doing his bit for sure and he’s playing at a good level obviously first time Georgia have reached a major tournament one of the reasons they got there is this guy but obviously had the game of his life yesterday in gaining him the first ever point at to Major tournament but talking about the save as you said he’s a big guy he’s 6′ six so sometimes if we’d have talked about Hugo Larice for instance you’d have been expecting him to make this save but for the big guys it’s tougher you you know that it’s hard getting down there so for him to make this save and actually if I being really critical we spoke off a so we might as well be honest about it I obvious I think he’s actually a yard too high and he’s maybe losing a little bit of reaction time so for me as a coach I think right I could affect him and make that save a little bit easier for him maybe that’s his style maybe that is his style cuz he’s a bigger goalkeeper he’s he kind of knows that he won’t have the reaction speed of some of the smaller goalkeepers so he will start maybe a little bit higher just so that he’s a bit more of a barrier up front there that like that but he’s he’s read the situation well he has to get a little little small contact to be in a position but you can see the anticipation the drive and then the actual power and the flexibility to get down there with his right hand behind him behind he saves it behind him that’s how much of a good save this is that that speed to get down there and I agree with you it’s little contact that he makes with his feet just to get himself over just a little bit and then be able to kick that leg out and but for a young goalie he’s read the situation because he has he has the contacts and he just backs the defender is going to block the reverse so he’s got the momentum because of the contacts to get down with the right hand so he’s used everything that he can to make it an advantage for him and hon a sa the tournament so far um I think the next one’s probably slightly better do you yeah well it leads us on nicely then we got a little bit of GG Donal R love for you okay this is um that save GG Top Hand um he’s what 30 yards out when he strikes that ball um talk to me about um Donna R’s position though because I think everything he’s done prior to the strike is what allows him to actually make this save yeah when when you look at it from the first strike from outside the box you can see it’s two stripes outside the box so it’s 30 yards and we talk about big goalies this is a big guy but but he knows yes he might not always be able to get the contacts and he wants to use his frame like we alluded to on the last clip but this is why I think this saves better it just shows you even with the size and the frame that he’s got is is at two yards yes he he sees it from 30 yards but it’s passing bodies all the way it just passes uh one of the center half it’s always one of those balls that picks up pace as it goes do you know what I mean yeah and that’s why we’re trying to educate Everybody by yourself time this is a goal who’s again 6’5 6’6 might not be the quickest with his feet but he’s still strong powerful and agile and I’m telling you four yards before that balls at his hand he thinks that’s a really comfortable save but this ball has been hit like a missile and it’s gone from an relatively easy save because he’s done everything right start position buy reaction time distance he thinks that I’ve got it and then all of a sudden the ball’s like you said gathered Pace but if he didn’t do everything right in terms of holding that start position adjusting into it reading it and then obviously using the top hand that that’s past him yeah I I I totally agree this this part you see where it hits his hand and I’m talking it hits the finger the the little finger it does in fact when you put your top hand up like that you lose a little bit of what’s the word feeling what it’s the only time you lose a bit of vision exactly and you don’t quite know where that hand is you know that if you’re going with that hand you know exactly to the millimeter where it is and you know exactly where you’re going to get the touch on the ball I promise you but when it’s your top hand it’s like you lose a little bit of feeling don’t you and it’s trust and it’s again repetition of practice because if he goes I’m not saying it’s he has to go for it with his left hand because it’s not it’s an amazing Top Hand save but when your top hand comes across you at that point now that millisecond I’ve lost the ball yeah so then it’s just trust and and that’s what makes for me the save great because as he’s pulling his right hand across for the Top Hand save at that point I think he thinks he’s got it all day but then he has to trust he’s not quite seen it at the last action and as you said it just gets there I guarantee you for a split second a very Split Second he would have been thinking oh no that’s gone in the back of the net he would have kind of as he twists his head a little bit he would have seen it sailing over the bar and he would have thought thank God for that that is a proper good save but the only reason why he can make it is all of the little bits that he does before the ball is struck absolutely and and it’s a save I think commentators think oh it’s a shot from 30 yards is one of the best goalies at the tournament that’s an easy save it is not an easy save and it’s all the components that we just discussed that make it that way and all honestly would would have been say commentators been saying if he’ have missed it or it’s gone in the middle of the goal and everything but like that that for me has been the save of the tournament so far for all the reasons we’ve discussed there you go then that was keeper corner I hope you enjoyed it we will see you again on Wednesday morning for the football fill in do not forget that we are out at the tournament for the duration so we’ll be making Match Day Vlogs we’ve got a few cycling videos we’re going to give you and of course the keeper Corner W world class boom see you later guys [Music]

    1. Portugese Silva's are not recovering from injuries like Harry or Shaw or Stones or Saka or Foden & did not play in energy sapping UCL final like Jude a few weeks ago. Its physically tiring, getting over an injury in hot humid suffocating air & a sodden soggy slippy rubbish pitch.

    2. Be calm & brave Harry Gareth Jude & co. Hunt like energetic Lion's who never get flustered & never give up. A 3-0 win on Tuesday ignites the victory charge by the 3 Lion's 🦁 just like that brave win v/s Rattin & co in 1966 when England were wobbling.

    3. Courtois was annoyed at the Belgian manager because when De Bryune was injured Courtois asked for the captaincy in his testimonial game for Belgium but the manager gave the arm band to Lukaku. The official reason has just come from an injury and he can't play consecutive games

    4. you've talked about keepers being in nomansland in previous episodes, and I was wondering how to avoid that, when to commit and when not to, and what to do if you happen to be in nomansland. it'd be great if you were able to discuss it for a little in the next episode. Love this btw! When watching the games, I was kind of predicting which actions you'd discuss. Great value in these analysis and also amazing to learn from.

    5. Can you feature Gulacsi save in the next keeper corner cause he is my 2nd fav keeper behind Rambo and he made a bunch of saves alredy in this tournament! Let's hope we are gonna get to the round of 10. Hajrá Magyarország!!!!! 🇭🇺

    6. Why does this sound like Neuer's obituary? I could have sworn I saw him relatively alive on the pitch earlier?
Also, does anyone know why can certain channels (like 442) use video footage?

    7. As a ex keeper love this show Ben you really need to get it on sky as an hour weekly show this would be must viewing and you could do a lot more with actually showing the video

    8. Good morning Benjamin the cycling goalkeeper. I have a question burning into my brain and I just have to know. Best 11 players who have scored against you v best 11 players who haven’t scored against you? Who’s in them and who wins?
      Good day!

    9. It'd be really interesting to see watto and ben look at gk from different sports (watto mentions wicket keeper) and what can and has been taken from them into football and vice-versa ( the obvious being the Schmeichel star/spread from Handball)
