Hey Scramblers, or should I say fellow adventurers? It’s Day 7 on our ‘mildly insane’ journey to Andorra on the Trans Euro Trail. In today’s episode, we stumbled upon Lac du Salagou. It’s like we teleported to the Australian Outback, only with more French cheese and less kangaroos.

This lake in France is seriously confused about its geography with all that red soil. I half-expected to see a koala in the trees, but no luck yet. Instead of doing the typical touristy stuff (because who needs that, right?), we spent our day embracing the rugged, uncharted terrain. My Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE – is handling the trail like a champ and probably enjoying the scenery more than I am.

Some cool facts about Lac du Salagou, the stunning spot in France we explored in our latest video. You know, the place with the incredible red soil? Turns out, it’s not just pretty to look at; it’s got a whole lot of history and science behind it.

So, this red dirt is actually called ‘ruffe.’ It’s super old, dating back to the Permian period – we’re talking about 298 to 252 million years ago! What gives it that awesome red color is the iron oxide mixed in the soil. Pretty neat, right? It’s like this region has been holding onto a piece of Earth’s history in its backyard.

And get this – the soil isn’t just old; it’s got traces of some of the oldest mammals in Europe. It’s like a natural history museum under our feet. These mountains around the lake have seen a lot, from dinosaurs to us roaming around with our cameras and bikes.

The lake itself? It’s man-made, built in the 1960s for irrigation and to prevent flooding. It’s quite large, with a surface of about 700 hectares. The mountains and plateaus around it make the scenery just breathtaking.

Besides the cool geology, it’s also a great spot for outdoor activities.

Hope this gives you a bit more insight into this amazing area we got to experience!
