▶ OTTENDORF
The history of Ottendorf begins at least 1,000 years ago, as evidenced by corresponding archaeological finds. The name Ottendorf—village of Ott(e)—likely comes from the “locator,” the official responsible for assigning living spaces to settlers here. Ottendorf is first mentioned in documents in 1270. In the extensive village chronicle from 1994, the former and last schoolmaster J.D. Blöcker describes the interesting history of Ottendorf over the past 1,000 years, with detailed documentation of the farming village lifestyle that shaped life up until the 1960s. Those interested can purchase the chronicle from the municipality.
“Amidst greenery and yet close to the city”—this could be a brief description of Ottendorf. The village’s central location as the easternmost village in the Amt Achterwehr, just before Kronshagen and only a few minutes by car from the state capital, makes Ottendorf a unique and attractive rural community for many residents. Village life is enriched by the very active Sports and Leisure Club Ottendorf (SFCO), a Volunteer Fire Department that not only provides fire protection but also hosts various events such as bird shooting and village barbecues, reflecting the strong community spirit, and an active municipal council comprising Ottendorf citizens of all generations.
The high recreational value is a significant reason why many people choose to live in Ottendorf today. Whether on foot, with or without a dog, or by bike, one is quickly surrounded by greenery and can reach the Kiel Canal in a short time. The agriculturally successful fields and meadows around the village reflect the changing seasons and the close connection to nature. The kindergarten, located in the old school in the village center, is next to the fire station and the community center, which features a modern sports hall, a shooting range for the marksmen, and facilities for various activities, from toddler groups to senior gatherings.
A summer evening stroll past old thatched-roof farmhouses, a glance at the village pond, and a walk around the biotope makes it clear: this is a place where both men and women can live well.
