Relive Boris Herrmann’s arrival in the New York Vendée race in Les Sables d’Olonne! 👀

and got away and Charlie sailed a more median middle course across closer to the rum line I say that was the passport to his victory but uh in the meantime in third place just now Jeremy be is still about 400 miles behind he’ll be expected to finish tomorrow around about just over 24 hours behind so that really is an emphatic first and second for Charlie and uh for Boris and really Boris sailed a fantastic race see this really will establish him as as one of the favorites remember in the uh the last Bondi globby finished fifth coming back in into the channel I think he had very mixed emotions he was very much in contention then coming in uh from the south of the Bay of bisy everyone who follows Boris and the vond globe knows what happens next it was a certainly Contender for the podium at that point and unfortunately hit the fishing boat and still managed to come in saved his boat and got in in fifth place gaining a little bit of time recompense uh for his help in the search for Kevin es scofi in the Southern Ocean so Boris now is one of the uh if not probably the most experienced Moka sailor in the 28 boat fleet remember he did the uh most of the ocean race and has probably done more miles on militz C Explorer since he launched the boat in uh 2022 first race for the uh new boat was the rout to Rum very much a Shakedown Cruise or a Shakedown race I should say very much trying to find the uh what makes the boat uh go and try and get it reliable and really from then on it’s been uh up and up and up you have to reflect that Boris has gone from regular kind of fifth sixth sth in the amoka races now to be a serious Contender as he’s just proven on these uh last two races I think that’s partly attributable to as the time he spent in the South with this uh boat this vplp design which is very much orientated to racing in the uh Southern Ocean downwind in the big conditions and that’s really what he saw in the as he passed through the top of the high pressure that was uh about playing to the strengths of the boat I I think he probably could of knew that if he followed Charlie he would uh he would struggle to pass him and so uh he played a measured risk going up to the north he told us at the time that he spent a long time looking at the uh weather routing and all the weather information before he went trusting his instincts a little bit and it was very nervous time for him up when he was up at the top of the high pressure system I think it was around about 36 hours very light difficult conditions nervous nervous times though all the time fairly Serene and enjoying the experience but all the time wondering when the uh the wind was going to kick in so Boris will come straight into the channel I think that’s been his key uh key thing really we’re expecting him a little bit earlier in the afternoon but he didn’t want to come in channel of course only enough water from 4:00 the uh tide coming in allows there to be enough water in the channel so it’s really about uh precision timing for Boris this afternoon so here’s Boris on deck on the militti sea Explorer looking relaxed and uh ready for this uh passage into the Channel Total uh Rel I think probably as much as anything is main emotion just uh waiting for quite breezy just getting the uh main sail down see Rel probably is much the Primary Emotion for him just now he will enjoy the passage into the uh into the channel so not quite as many boats out as we normally see for a a vondi globe finish but certainly Charlie D had quite a number of people on the uh the seaw walls on both sides of the channel so Boris there with his technical team on board steu mclin there the uh technical manager in the red salopet so it’s been a long time uh long time away between uh the two trans Atlantics he’ll be uh he’ll be Keen to get in back in reunited with his family his daughter and his uh his little dog Lily who’s uh rarely without when he’s in at home in Europe celebrated 43rd birthday did Boris on the eve of the departure and he’s pretty much been in the lead or there or thereabouts he s shared the lead with Charlie pretty much since the uh the start both are certainly Boris in particular stayed in the north of the group coming out of the start remember the start was 90 miles uh offshore of New York Boris uh looked after himself well I think on the way out that he had enough or enough energy to deal with the difficult conditions then remember that uh had the situation with uh this low pressure trough uh always causing them problems but at the same time they had the Gulf Stream which uh upset the winds in terms of the temperature upsetting the wind and also the current positive current flowing with them when it was light and it really reduced the apparent wind and really caused many many problems for uh the other Skippers but Boris and Charlie in particular dealt with it so beautiful afternoon great time to be coming into to lisab Delon with uh getting towards the end of the afternoon so Boris waving to his uh fans he’s many many fans around the world militans in uh at home in Germany in Monaco in the yach club de Monaco big shout out to everyone in Hamburg and uh I believe that Boris has got uh melitz bar in Hamburg but also the yach club of Monaco have been the supporters for the project since the very very beginning Pierre casari of course started with the program with Boris they ran a gc32 initially and uh then moved into mocha so this boat is very very uh different to the uh the other okas in the fleet so very much orientated to the Big South the uh downwind conditions there and obviously proven itself already in the in the Ocean Race winning the long leg from Cape Town to it here we are inside then give you a real good uh impression of uh what living is like and sailing Boris does and the team do most of the sailing inside is this little almost half cabin you can see just behind that’s the living space that really will be the key in the vond globe I’m sure and it has been uh when times have been tough on the trans Atlantics and uh for sure in the early part of the tjv last year when he was going across bisy then Boris was pretty pretty quick and uh also it’s all about uh minimizing the discomfort rather than maximizing Comfort I would say that is very much what the life is like inside these boats it’s going to be a big part of the uh ability to perform on the on the vondy globe so I think just getting the main seal down just sorting themselves out and uh see sure there will be uh some big crowds out in this uh Sunday afternoon quick look there from the top of LOM so B is 10 days 20 hours 52 minutes and 32 seconds very very respectable pretty much uh kind of a little bit or almost equidistant between the first and third but uh that uh fast downhill sho from the uh higher latitudes really was also a good test for Boris and the boat I’m certainly sure that he will go into the vondy globe probably with more confidence in his boat than anyone else in the fleet having put it through so much considering how uh some teams have struggled with damage over the uh this race in the last few races such a reminder of how a small small damage can really compromise your whole round the world race you can’t afford to have a bow break or foil damage in at any point in the race particularly with a maximum capacity Fleet this is going to be a fabulous fascinating Von Globe coming up so many good teams uh putting in so much in the way of resources including of course uh this team German team are based out of Germany but also supporting or supported by the yach club of Monaco spe so just taking it easy getting the uh sails down tidying up so starting to make his way towards the Channel full technical team on board so of course this will be boris’s first time back into the channel since the uh the vondy globe back in January 202 1 didn’t do the uh Von de Arctic race cuz his boat was still in build then back in 2022 first races said for this boat was the rout dum well actually did the Dei asimut first the first race when got a third place in that obviously a very short Race by comparison with the rout Dum but the 24th in that rout durum pretty disappointed he had some fairly serious technical problems on that race and really was all about getting down to the finish line but after that big winter refit before the uh the ocean race was refit after the Roan race and these uh new foils on for this race or for the uh the transac and this race and that’s certainly made a difference to the performance of the boat I think uh beautiful iconic Skyline you have to reflect that the uh this race goes from New York and one of the most iconic skylines in the world to Le alone which is one of the most recognizable skylines in World [Music] sailing just the approaches to the channel hopefully we may have D kafari with us D can you hear us I can Andy thank you AR finally the Miracles of Technology anyway your thoughts on boris’s Race I mean he’s say a measure of relief I think coming through the Finish Line Now’s the Time to enjoy it absolutely I mean it’s been a tough race uh for everybody involved but Boris really had to make an early decision and one that set him out on his own and he had even admitted on one of the interviews he did that he was uncomfortable sailing for so long on his own but uh the Ry smile a few days ago when he was looking at the routing coming in when he got through that um high pressure rid and got that downwind conditions into the Finish Line you could tell he was pretty confident a Podium position was his so it’s great timing for him to finish this race uh in second place but you kind of reflect you know I think certainly was emphasized for me when you were were watching Boris at that point how much life is just governed by the the numbers the The Roots just constantly looking at the weather constantly looking at the roots it’s such a very different SP sport Now isn’t it very much so and you’ve got to be so confident in your decision making and he left it as late as he possibly could but he even said if he had another 24 hours he probably would have made a slightly different decision and it would have been more similar to Charley D um but he was comfortable with his decision I think we’re really seeing Boris come from the crude racing and the double-handed racing that we’ve seen the last few years to being comfortable with his both solo set up now you know he’s very relaxed when he’s sailing he doesn’t get stressed but he’s quite methodical and sensible and I think it’s all really coming together for us to see a really strong performance later on in the year when he goes away from Las abalon unlike he’s doing now where he’s sailing into the Finish indeed if we reflect on how Boris was on the last vond Globe he he kind of struggled with the lonel in in a lot of Senses I think he’s much more confident in himself and the and I think he’ll go to this race with more confidence in the boat and I think that will uh really bolster his his mental approach I think so I think he’s definitely not not a skipper to hide the fact that he struggles in that solo environment it’s not something he’s comfortable in and he really enjoyed the team environment of the Ocean Race that they took part in and he really liked that comaraderie that support that network but now I think he’s learning about about himself because he’s super confident in the boat he absolutely knows how to make that boat go the modification to the foils is definitely helping it with an allround performance so now it’s just his head in the game that he needs to worry about and I think these last two races now back-to-back Podium places really should give him the confidence to go forwards to this year I mean we saw such an exciting vonde Globe from him in the last Edition that um he’s we’re expecting a great result but actually he goes into it without a a pressure on his shoulders because he’s such a relaxed character he kind of secretly goes about it behind the scenes and then suddenly pops up near the podium at the Finish which is um is great to see and a nice way to be yeah I remember I’m saying in the almost admitting in the last V glob because it was very much about sealing kind of high daily averages rather than pushing at 100% he sailed round at kind of 90 80 90% no that it was a long about the long game and it was he was almost surprised I think when he came into the uh cross the Equator and was found himself in really In Contention to win and uh I think he struggled emotionally at that point and wear that to happen again in the next race than he’s much better equipped he is but I think he’s also got an expectation of his abilities and the boats abilities to actually realize that he can push a little harder so what about this and he’s built this team is a very strong uh kind of Almost Family like team environment isn’t it definitely the militans are a very strong bond uh they extend quite globally uh with a massive fan base uh and I think because they’re such an international team everyone’s just embracing them and and it’s nice to see somebody um having fun doing what they’re doing with a team around them that are just loving being there it it’s like that it’s not all work and no play there’s definitely a good balance in this team that’s right and stum mcland there the uh technical director I thinker he’s uh he’s been around the scene for a long long time and uh a great sounding board well I remember him when he was working on a boat for the Barcelona world race um back in 2010 so he’s definitely been involved with these boats through many itations and uh he’s seen the confidence in this boat grow so he’ll be very excited about its potential for the end of the year but I was saying at the beginning of our broadcast that uh you know you tend to overlook uh boris’s experience how many times he’s been around the world how many different classes he sailed and uh you know he he was going around in class 40 in uh I think 2008 2009 did the round his first round the world race and round in the Barcelona world race done the Ocean Race and of course the V Globe not many not many Skippers in this Fleet now have done as many miles around the world exactly and he’s such a humble person with it that he doesn’t kind of push his CV on anybody and let’s not forget he was part of um the crew for some incredible um strange trips that he’s done whether it’s um going up north in the Russian Waters or even a jwes ver and navigating that so he’s he’s got so much experience and I think we often underestimate him because we talk of other big names that’s why he slips under the radar and then keeps popping up on the podium which is just fabulous to see it is indeed uh just Tak his long long little video I think perhaps but uh the other person who I think is probably uh she’s doing really well in this race but we tend to forget how many miles she’s done probably second in terms of miles and experiences Sam Davis oh absolutely Ely she is just flying this year and if you’re going to Peak this is the year to peek on on a vond globe year Podium place on the way uh West and now coming east she’s having a really strong performance but what I think is really noticeable with Sam Davis at the moment is how much she’s enjoying her boat and the sailing um I think she’s overcome a lot of obstacles in the last couple of years and she’s found her happy place again and when she’s happy at se she just it performs indeed uh they think they’ll be in uh plus uh plus 24 hours just now we’re looking at Jeremy Buu coming in probably in third but that little cluster that little group are having a great race Sam’s in the match with the Yan Rish just now winner of the race outwards and and this has been an incredible race to follow um just because that north south split has been over a, miles and it’s so unusual for us to see such complete different options and then the challenges that the Southern Group faced very different weather to the Northern Group and then those that kind of ended up in the middle cuz they’re a little bit slower and got different weather again uh I think everyone’s found the weather very challenging they haven’t always seen what was forecast or what was on their computer screen so they looked outside but to have such close racing in all the pockets but then to see Boris with the conviction he had to go as far as he did you know everyone got confused if he actually knew where the Finish was but he he had the plan and he executed it and even Charlie was looking over his shoulder yesterday he said that didn’t he Charlie said last night when he came in he just had a few nervous moments in the last 24 hours looking at the speeds Boris was doing 25 26 knots at times coming uh from that uh nor the Northerly latitudes interesting how his route uh his rooting actually changed at one point well in fact Charlie said at one point that he saw his routing going east of Ireland and uh at one point we were also quering whether Boris would go uh leaving leave um The fastet Rock to port or starboard and the routing actually moved significantly to the uh to the West again and that’s when the the threat was uh reestablished for uh against Charlie yeah that’s right I mean and from when he took that decision to take that Northern route to then the days where it all became a little more aligned um you know it it’s hard to make that decision so early and then stick to convictions and then not have to bail out and try and cloth stuff back that was the thing wasn’t it there there was no baing out was there no I mean he had to commit if he’d gone that far he just needed to stay there and fair play to him you know he’s got he had nerves of Steel doing that yeah I think he did but I think they had he did have some few nervous moments he was uh he was giving us a little bit of jip for suggest that he gambled but uh I think it was a a fairly carefully computed Gamble and uh it’s good to yeah he made the choice but you’re right it was a big risk massive risk but um you know sometimes the risk pay off um I think for most people they would have preferred to have been in the company of others so they can take this race as the opportunity to see how your boat performs against the others um and that’s what he missed out on but actually he did that on the race over to New York and now coming back he’s had that opportunity to kind of make those tactical decisions that he’s going to have to make at the end of the year on the big one indeed I don’t think we’d ever see on the on the V course the vond course that kind of opportunity to split so far aart so uh I think we’ll look forward to uh the race and see how that uh plays out but what’s it like coming back into the channel D you’ve done it uh the 2008 2009 vony globe it’s a very very special special place in uh in World ceiling oh absolutely you talked about New York having a you know magnificent recognizable Skyline and actually Le abdon being quite a visual special place for the sailing world and this channel now that Boris is entering it’s a phenomenal place to be the the emotions you feel in this channel just by the volume of support of people that come out and cheer this sailing on is you know you just don’t get that anywhere else I think you can have all your Olympic medals you like but there’s nothing that beats blad donon for a welcome or a send off if you’re going sailing around the world so hopefully we’re going to pick up on the uh the audio Boris is doing his first interviews with our media team I’m informed uh reliably that he’s going to do French and English but uh Boris the true and internationalist you know he speaks uh obviously German French English and Spanish he does uh his sustainability his environmental program is so uh Global as well let’s here here if we can hear Boris a lot chance to do a lot down ceiling Beautiful Sunday afternoon with the sunshine coming into the channel thank everybody for being here and in English please I’m super happy with a race um arriving second um congrats to Charlie uh what a fantastic race for him and I had the um the privilege to do a lot of downwind sailing and an exp crazy experience far nor almost in Greenland and I couldn’t have a better arrival than uh being here today with sunshine on the Sunday afternoon lots of people in the saon so very happy about the race so there we go this is the time to saor the time to enjoy [Music] it of course he this a big big star in Germany I think in the end towards the end of the uh the vond globe he was on the national news every night that really was the launching pad to elevate his program and build this new Bo D yeah but rightly so if you think about how his race had evolved from the pictures in his willly jumpers in the Southern Ocean you know very content with just pottering along and there he was challenging for Podium place before disaster struck literally in the final hours I mean it had us all on the edge of our seats it was a vond glob with a difference in the last Edition and I’m absolutely sure that this next Edition will have its same twists but uh there’s you know Boris is definitely a name to watch for being on that Podium um we know anything can happen but he’s really showing now he’s consistent in his performance the boat can definitely perform and now Boris has the confidence in himself now which is I think a key mental step step up for his game for the end of the year and did getting the uh the German flag out so German really needed an ocean racing hero of its own and Boris is delivered in that in that department a real household name at home and uh huge fan base as we noticed I have to say no criticism but uh they’re live for the arrival of the the outbound race most of the followers online were from Germany so big shout out for everybody all German fans the German militans uh watching this big following in the uh National media at home in Germany it’s a lovely summer Resort gundi Boris has also been a massive inspiration to German sailing um there’s a lot of new names coming through into the grow into the offshore world and it’s all literally kind of been from the last few years of Boris being so dominant uh in his sailing and growing his um presence in the sailing world and the fact that as you say he’s so International he’s so amicable to so many nations you know I think that’s a real credit to him how German offshore sailing really taking off so as Boris comes into the channel I think we’ve got a second guest hopefully um we should be hearing Chris Pratt I hope from uh Marse a Militan from Marse Chris how are you ah quite fun in you andd it’s sunny day yeah sunny day in Marc is it h not at all I was stuck in in like normal storm just on the motorway so that’s why I’m a bit late sorry oh dear anyway talk to us about Boris and the this performance as a Militan what’s the what does this mean for his team yeah oh it mean a lot it’s it’s amazing the the double performance because he uh second on on the way uh to to New York and second also on the way back with two completely different races um and D said said it really well I mean the first one was really about uh staying in in the pack and and then uh showing how good Malia is um is doing well in downwind and wavy condition and this one was about strategy and also uh I mean being very um um uh tactical and uh and um focus on the on the way to sail through this front and uh he did it very really well and what I like also is his way to to go on the North pass because um uh it it was really not gambling because at first you know one one day or two days before the start we we we had routing going this way and and this was clearly an option uh an option with a longer route but uh but but an option and uh he did it really well he was a bit a bit scared at the moment to be alone and and stay stuck in the high pressure but finally it’s moveed high pressure moves quite well for him and uh and uh he did really well and um each time you’re downwind with this boat it’s just crazy because because it’s so easy so fast uh I didn’t sail with the new fold but I think it’s a it’s also another big Improvement so no I mean it’s it’s it’s crazy with for him for the team and uh and I think now is really one of the favorite for the for the V glob with uh with this boat and and also with the confidence he he had now with his two transatlantic uh and with major result at the end so um I mean a big big uh big Bravo to him and and to the team and I think now he he just got to to take rest before the V glob and and puu which is on the board with him and uh which I I used to work with him a lot on on charl sing team is going to take care of the boat and and I’m sure the boat is going to be completely perfect and ready for for the start of the vond just talk to us Chris a little bit about that weather situation then with the the talve as we as you call it in French this uh this trough just explain for our viewers who maybe don’t know uh ocean racing as uh as well as some people do what was the situation there because it was like a a hurdle that was moving with them a water jump that they they had to get through and get away from whereas the rest of the fleet just continued to stay in it yeah I mean we knew that it will be hard to go through this uh this T this front uh but uh um I think we minimize the the effect of of the cloud the storm and the changing condition in the in the front H and so um and and also uh they take uh uh it was a bit slow slower than the routing on the first part and so they they were a bit late on the on the routing and uh and and it was really hard to go through this front and uh to be honest I I was not really connected when they when they go through it but um uh the thing I I I think what do what Boris and um and Charlie did really well was to going um to have um a really uh a really perpendicular route from the from the front just uh just after passing it and being as fast as possible to to the west and um and and so they they did it but but also it’s a bit of I I don’t know if it’s luck but you know it just two miles two miles away and and you you go with the front and two miles on the other side and and you stay stuck so uh I mean for sure they did it really well but maybe also they got a a bit of um I don’t know how you call this in English D but Reit is like it’s not like luck is just you you created your own luck but uh so yeah that’s a that’s indeed the case but I think uh I think Charlie was saying that he was alongside uh Nicol lunven you know a couple of miles apart and uh Charlie escaped and and Nico didn’t didn’t and that was not anything to do with uh nik’s problems with his bow sprit or anything was just uh in the position and pressing the accelerator at the right time knew that they knew what was happening behind him and he managed to run away from it so great great moments for B exactly and I think the the other important point is about the strategy of Boris is because when he when you go through through the front first uh I think he was he was so scared to be uh uh to be catch up again uh that he he he choose to to be uh to go as fast as possible so it mean reaching and uh a bit a bit lower than than the reaching and so that’s why he he he finally go uh also on on this North Route because it then after it was really hard for him uh to go back on a I mean on a medium route or on the South rout so uh it’s also the way that he go through the front that makes him uh decide I I think uh to go on on this North Route which which was clearly an option but like like d said uh uh a risky option because uh because a really long route uh far away from the um from the autonomy d d Beautiful Moments for Boris then Sunday afternoon on the on the these lovely little cafes and bars that uh we like to enjoy from time to time when we get to come here in the summer but a great great Vantage Point yeah for everybody the fact that number one and number two has arrived on a Sunday where they’ve been out and about nobody’s had to go to work and miss out so they will be loving this this is like just a little warmup for what’s coming later in the year because we know how good the locals are at welcoming Sailors in from races and giving them the right send off and here we are on a Sunday afternoon of a transatlantic race and you can hear the volume of the people see the number of people spectating I think it’s great it is indeed I mean it’s beautiful to see L Theon in the summer as I was saying at the start of the broadcast it’s really very nice uh summer Resort more and more visitors coming here in the summer due to the profile that it gets from the uh from the V another big uh big ceiling races that’s right I mean we fall in love with it in November through the winter when we’re dealing with the vond globe um and the isolated beaches but to actually see those Beaches come into their own right in the sunshine is lovely to see we don’t often get that at the end of the year so it’s really nice to see um LASD Delon shown off in all its Glory at the start of a summer did Chris a few words about this boat then I mean obviously we’ve now seen for uh four trans Atlantics between the end of last year and uh and this year what’s uh what’s the performance profile of this boat compared to uh the other other designs uh I mean we all know that the the the the major key the major um Talent if I can say of this boat is a downwind when it’s uh when it’s wavy uh but what is interesting is with the new FS he is reduced the Gap is reducing the Gap in the other condition I mean like up wi and uh and uh and reaching uh on the on like 12 to to 16 knots um and uh and also what we already saw uh on the ocean race is uh the boat is going really well in a really light condition and I think that helped uh Boris a lot on the first part of the race uh you know he he he took a a really excellent start and then he stay uh in the front of the field of the fleet even if it was really light and finally the boat is uh is a bit heavy but uh but the the the hull shape is is doing good in in the really light win uh you know we we saw that um on the last stage of the of the ocean race when they they were fighting with bot I guess for the for the victory in Genova and and uh and and they did it really well in a light wi downwind condition uh so so I I think it’s a it’s now it’s um usually we we used to say that malite is really a boat for heavy condition uh but I think now he’s got more card on his game and and he he really can do can do well in all the condition maybe not as good upwind than shal or or massive but finally uh he is in a good level for for this typee for the other condition and is clearly um a really easy boat to sail uh when it’s uh when it’s rough when it’s wavy when it’s uh downwind with huge waves and uh and and it’s going to make a huge gap I don’t know if you remember the the faces of uh of Rosie Nico Boris and and will after the the long stage in the Southern Ocean on the the Ocean Race uh they were they were I mean they were not that we outside for sure but nothing compared to to V cre or or B cre so uh I think this this way that um Boris SN this boat uh I mean by uh building a boat for the Southern Ocean being uh uh able to to do everything inside the boat um and improving the comfort and and they they they also done more Improvement this winter with this new this new seat on the cockpit and also this this new place to do the the navigation and so and so now is really comfortable in the in the boat he can sail uh uh completely inside and uh and is not wasting any energy um when uh when it’s uh when it’s hot and when it’s wavy so I I think it’s a really good um boat now and and and and and he clearly show that uh that he he makes a good choices like four years ago with choosing this this type of boat I mean everybody was a bit uh um I mean skeptical I think I mean not yeah skeptical you’re right uh when we saw the boat and we all called the bus uh because you know it’s huge and uh and yeah the bus Malia bus and so uh and so we said we all said oh no it’s too big it’s too heavy Etc but finally uh they they almost we almost win the the ocean race with this boat and and now I think he’s leading the the the 24 World Championship no yeah yeah think so because he do he has two second place so he he’s clearly leading the the the championship and and and I think he is really a major favorite for for the Vay so congrats to him and and congrats to to his choice I mean it’s it’s really nice to work with him because like like this said it’s a it’s a humble guy and he is’s listening a lot uh the other people around him he’s trusting his team uh but also he’s trting trusting himself and his his own choice and so no it was it was really fantastic for me to work with them in in the oan race and even if I didn’t sail with Boris we we got a we got a particular relation and uh I know we I know he he likes um I mean calling me just to to speak and speaking about the the strategy and the the decision he going to make for the project and for the for the next Ocean Race For The V glob and so it’s always cool to to to have a chat with him so I can’t wait to to have a chat with him after the race and for for a quick debrief indeed Chris but d as Chris is saying the the ergonomics the level of the minimizing the level of discomfort as opposed to comfort is going to be so important on this long race for sure and we’re hearing all the time as the speeds increase as the activate here and earlier in the wind strengths and on more points of sail these boats are really stressful you know the noise and the motion thing is about protecting the Sailor and there’s that balance you is relaxed comfortable and then to look after themselves by EA and sleep you can make much better informed decisions and uh and I think we’re really seeing that with Boris he’s super he’s always in a position look or he’s in the cockpit and he’s he’s not like kind of fighting against the motion of the boat it’s all happening together now and I think that’s allowing him to concentrate on what’s important at the right time and and I think Charlie D spoke about this he speaks about the ergonomics of a boat a lot when he’s talking about new ideas and Design Concepts and uh and people like different things but I think what we found here is Boris has got a boat that is comfortable allows him to perform at his best and we’re seeing that all come together now with two second places I’m grinning for him I just think it’s all coming together at the right time really good confidence boost for him indeed it’s like the Olympics is all about peing getting yourself into the uh the medal Zone at the right time absolutely it’s fouryear cycle of a vond Globes are very similar it’s great as we said just to reflect on uh being able to uh watch boris’s development over the years and uh Elevate himself to be a contender for the uh the upcoming vondy Globe approaching the uh vond Globe dock now then in the the heart of Port Alona taking his place place behind the massive s PR sure Charlie will be on the uh on the dock to greet him I think Charlie will be on the dock he usually uh usually always for the the arrival of the of the other conference so uh for sure he will be and um no it’s it’s it’s really uh a lot of emotion for for everyone to to see him there and and you’re completely right now he he’s standing as a as a really big favorite oh yes I just want to want to add something maybe about his preparation I think what is’s really good at is also to be able to take uh to take rest you know he he’s got full confidence in U in the team for uh for the boat and the commercial Etc so it allows him to to go back uh uh with his family and take rest and uh and and being as as fresh as possible when when he when it comes to to a race start so it’s know that he said spends as much time as he can back home in uh in Hamburg and only comes to comes to loron for the periods when he needs to be there so he’s got young young family ch and also oh yeah also you need to you know you need to you need to take rest because it’s this kind of project and this kind of boat uh uh spend a lot of energy and so being able to uh it make me think um about AR is also really good at it you know when he’s when he’s on the boat he’s really focused and and and he is training like like Rafael Nadal when he’s when he’s training in with the tennis ball and um but when he’s out he’s out and he spend time with his family with his friend and and and when when he’s back with the team and on the boat is um is ready so there we go then EV the president of the V the vond region the vond and the vondy globe figurehead for the race we’ll be seeing a lot of him over the course of the bond both before and after Hub Leon there just in the place is the race director [Music] [Applause] moment he’s practiced that a few times now so he’s getting good at it he was even relaxed popping the champag it’s you can almost reflect on their different characteristics as he pop the champagne it was interesting to watch Charlie doing it this morning very careful very measured and then spray everywhere and Boris much the same certainly don’t it’s coming down off the boat [Music] two Champions say you can do the translation they are talking about the options [Music] po his [Music] [Music] okay was for trying [Laughter] [Music] thinking RAC [Music] they congratulate [Music] thank for the welcome I love the sound beautiful uh as you say Sunday afternoon welcome on the ponon donor [Music] seen so many uh great victories in history of the glob we just have one picture of [Music] of I wish I wish I was have fantastic tonight yes like like knows how to do this so I think everyone every member of the team is there so it’s going to be a fantastic tonight I guess I spoke with Will Harrison he’s on his way he was at a wedding in London I think he’s trying to get there missed the missed the finish line but uh he’s going to be there in time for the party I’m pretty sure key part of the uh think he did yeah yeah yeah and and uh I just heard that Boris was saying to Charlie that uh he hesitates a lot about the option so I I think they there that kind of debriefing now but of course they train against each other at uh Port laf don’t they Boris is part of the program there yeah yeah I I think from from what I heard from puu the technical director they going to be back at at C out of the of the shed middle of August so I think that they’ve got a um they plan some training with all the PO members like Jeremy sh Dan so for sure it it mean that they can they can have a last adjustment on the on the on the sales on the on the on the configuration on the sale set on the foil set to be completely ready but uh but but now you know most of the job is done and so all they got to do is to be sure that the boat is is in shape and verify all the all the systems uh um and um and take rest for Boris and uh uh start to to work on the on the on the routing on on the forecast and and and just be ready for for November but uh the big part of the job is uh is behind them now no no no no fantastic team and Malia part is going to start now with the beers already there and um and so uh everybody’s there and Mary which is a community manager and they’ve got a commercial team and it’s almost the same team that that we used to have in uh in the Ocean Race um this is Ellen uh uh chief of the commercial team and and and you have K also which is a really important guy on the on the technical side and he’s all also a really important guy on the for the Indians uh during the during the party and social living of the team so um I mean yes it’s really the same team maybe we can hear about it go ahead Chris a lot of emotion a lot question is about the emotion during the week I I was a bit I realiz [Music] [Music] late I didn’t make the choice to beat Charlie I I just made this choice because I thought it was the the best fruit I I just lost the the sound now so but I think no that’s fine but I think I think that’s a key thing isn’t it because uh you know in terms of suggesting that he was gambling to beat Charlie then uh that was her contention at the at the time when he was saying that just wanted to follow the rout for the [Music] performance he enjoyed and I apprciate I’m really well confident in the boat now oh it’s going to translate it it’s to be easy us you can translate to French oh no sorry yeah it’s beautiful to see how many people um come here to celebrate sailing in I think it’s Unique in the world that you have so many people just coming out and it’s a beautiful day for it it’s a Sunday afternoon sunny and um so it’s it’s such a fantastic welcome and uh yeah to P in two race uh you become a a big uh big player for next yeah I just uh put don’t put too much pressure on myself I don’t want to uh speak about uh these things too much but uh what I really want is a reliable boat and so big congrats to the team because we didn’t have any problems on this race and and on the previous race so two races uh with no problems that’s that’s a great achievement in terms of technical um uh Excellence technological excellence and preparation of the boat and tell us about the start in New York and now we are in Fr in this Happ what do you mean big city and yeah lamech yeah New York was of course a fantastic um place to race to and took start again from to come back um so we have really uh enjoyed the city we have um we have met amazing people that we also going to work together with in the future I think with our ecological uh projects and campaigns and so great memories from New York that I took at Sea and then now coming to the mecca of sailing in France and uh where it feels a bit home in uh in this part of western France and uh glad to be here we’re going to do some German D you can do that that everyone’s there well so long as he consistent in his conversation I can tell you that he’s that’s the great thing is we know escape from I was quite sure uh if there’s still a risk at the front could catch us so I was a bit just talking about obviously still in English talking about the the front and the risk of the front catch as far away from the as possible so that brought me in this different position for when we made the big strategic choice that from that moment on I thought the North Route was would be better for me and was this decision but um then I kept the decision I went on and when I was then few days later I was in it and I couldn’t go couldn’t change anywhere the decision did you doubt about that option I doubted a little bit at some stage because it was just uh it just looked crazy on the chart but uh scientifically I think it was it was correct it was also from when I took the decision it was a shorter route uh and um because the the the the route that that looks more direct for Charlie it has a lot of zigzag as well so um and at some stages the routing in the North had me beat Charlie or had let me go much more on a direct route around the high pressure and where now I needed to do all these jbes and at some of the models the wind was just 10° turned but that’s enough to go on a direct route and then I would have gained probably almost a day did you feel Stronger by the fact that you succeeded I mean you feel better now after this I think I really like to have done a choice on my own and um I could have of course just kind of taged and go behind Charlie be be like like 100 miles behind and then follow um but I think for everyone it would have been a less exciting race myself included also I was Keen to sail downwind more and to experience the nose with the transitions so I was uh at the end happy with my decision and would you have made such a bold choice in the v or was it this the race to just try it I think it’s also this race to try I mean maybe in the v uh you would uh you would uh manage risk a little bit differently uh had to say to say and um how did the past two races prepare you for the V was one more about speed the other one about strategy or maybe gaining confidence what was I think both races were great preparation for the vond the race to New York was good because I was a lot close to as a boat a lot in contact um so I could see that my speed was quite okay most of the time um and then on the way back I was very alone in the north which is a feeling that can happen in the v Globe where sometimes you end up really alone with no boats around for hundreds of miles so I could train a little bit remember this feeling it’s not so easy sometimes and could remember okay this is probably what the V glob could feel like and prepare for that sorry uh in what conditions is the boat and the skipper yeah boat and Skipper are in good conditions um we had very little technical problems almost none um and I’m especially happy that my main S held together because that has already done the ocean race and three transatlantic races so uh this has served very well and um yeah no problems at all and what’s up next are you looking forward to the V and how will you [Music] prepare last question um are you looking forward to the one globe and how will you prepare in the next yeah I’m really looking forward uh to the V and this race uh we achieved what I was hoping for to have confidence to be quiet in the summer to not doubt our choices and so now we just service about a little bit leave everything as it is and then take the start of the B so very comprehensive uh replies here from uh from Boris D yeah and I think it reiterated what we were second guessing for his arrival about the confidence in the boat the confidence in himself and actually having that experience of sailing on his own and sticking to a strategy and having confidence in his decision making so and I think that’s great and now we’re in that perfect position now where the team has confidence in what they did to prepare the boats that they’re now confident going towards the end of the year Boris can spend the summer a little more relaxed and just focus on the things he needs to do we know that’s always peppered with his sustainability work with his sponsors as well um but It All Leads really well to you know the great kind of preparation for the end of the year without being stressed or rushed or distracted in any way so I think this is you know it couldn’t have gone better and a really nice way we’ve just seen there he’s done the same interview in three languages and just how International it is becoming it it’s been a slow process because it’s so French dominated understandably but now we’re seeing International Skippers on the podium and have the ability to do multiple languages and so we’re kind of opening up our sport to a much wider audience which I think is such a positive anded of course in the words trans we had two International Skippers out of three and quite similar in terms of the numbers coming back some some young talent coming through as well looking at James har for example 26 years old putting together two uh really solid transs that’s right we’ve got a depth in um the international aspect of the class we’ve got a de in ag experience James and v two classic examples they seem to be joined at the hit in all races that they do so far so that’s quite entertaining but also that gender dispari is slowly changing and we’re seeing some really good strong performan series with Sam Davis on the podium we’ve got Justin mro always in the mix and pip is in the top 10 as we speak today so there’s some really strong performances um coming through which is just generally opening up the sport we’re not just tracking one person anymore um there’s there’s 10 contenders and we know anything as you say in terms of internal internationalization we’ve got OBO shishi or Japanese Skipper moving into his second on Globe one of the most experienced Skippers in terms of Miles actually we were talking about Boris earlier on but ki’s done many many miles but also Jackie or Chinese stipper just in the early stages of learning Thea relatively low budget but uh he’s a incredible character an incredible character and doing really well on this race he’s in with everybody no nobody’s left behind so it really is kind of giving those new Skippers confidence that they need to build one of those as well the Canadian Skipper just having confidence failing on his own in this Arena at this level and having confidence of making decisions and making it EX on I think that’s been one of the great things about this race I mean obviously Scott looking towards the 2028 race now he had a a pretty uh pretty challenging shall we say uh opening the transac Jack VRA I think he a little point after that when he retired with Nick Malone early in the race and I think there was some introspection wondering whether this really was for him but he’s worked hard he’s got to put himself into good shape and he’s really enjoying this race in the mix and another another nationality in the the family as it were yes and I think you know it really shows a strength of character which is a characteristic unique for a vond glob or any soloing but to go through a transact Jack bar where would see a little bit fearful of some of the condition and has as you say worked at it been based out of Portugal training with Nick helping and coaching but getting used to the uncomfortable making the uncomfortable comfortable again and progressing and building confidence and managing your expectation and now we’re seeing it all come to light in his performance across the Atlantic so it really is developing the new Young Sailors so the vets and the jameses and then the older Sailors coming into this where it’s still a new experience for them um and transatlantic is a great way to do it it’s just not too long but long enough to be scary indeed there you go boris’s lapse time 10 10 days 20 hours 52 minutes and 32 seconds the race record was 9 days and 16 hours set 2016 the only addition of this race sailed so far won by Jeremy beu obviously the four-year quadrennial that this race should have followed was upset by the global pandemic it’s really interesting because those times aren’t aren’t record times at all you know this race is taking everybody a bit longer than they anticipated so there’ll be a few hungry people arriving as the pones fill up over the next couple of days but um you know those times aren’t quick so if we get the right weather on one of these editions we should be in for some new records would I mean the thing that you that also always strikes you I mean it’s it’s it’s evident here on the uh pontoons for this race as they are for the vond globe this race is for everyone isn’t it it’s not about sailing fans these are everyday people from all around France and locals families some of them are there as you can see Boris fans it’s fantastic to see isn’t it you is as much what it’s all about is the Hightech foils and the locking in design for theond GL there’s technical advancement and there’s the boat and you know they’re awesome machines that can be phenomenal speeds now but what makes I’m MOA special is it’s it’s personality le as well the these are fans of Boris you know they’re fans of the Sailor and uh they don’t necessarily always understand all the technical aspects of the sailing that he’s just done but they are fans of him as a sports Personality and that’s something our Sports been lacking for a while and we’re definitely growing our characters a little more and I think media coverage social media this all help I mean we commented when bis was coming in that he was doing selfies and videoing stuff you know he’s he’s learned along the way that he’s got to deliver that side of things and open up a little more about life on board when he’s there on his own and it all helps it all helps grow the fan base spread the word and gets people interested in our sailing adventures it’s obviously later afternoon I mean you don’t know what what uh the normal Sunday procedures are the uh life of the sabath alone but there’s a few more looking for boris’s autograph and uh quick chat as he goes in than when Charlie was at 9:00 this morning but that may be just a simple function of it’s later in the day and there’s more people up and about that’s it so Chris for you who who have the other outstanding performers been on uh over the two transacts we might have lost might have lost Chris I think but D ask you the same question I mean one one ski is great to see going well as Sebastian Simon I think and F Place yeah load and clear okay yesan ising pretty good race I think he was a bit frustrated about uh uh about the way to to New York on the cic and uh and on this one it was really uh on the in um in the group and um be able to to sail with with Tom and Jeremy so uh so I think it’s going to be really for him to uh to to finish this race in like five or or six place and um and and show that he can he can be in the in the leading pack um but um no I’m a bit frustrated with for Nik Lunen because he shows the before Street and he was almost leaving the street also with with Charlie and Boris in this one and and again for sure it’s going to be it’s going to be is going to be a major guy to on the B but but I think it’s a lot of frustation for him to not being able to compete really on on those two transatlantic uh same for uh with which I think he really really able to perform and to and to be on the on the leading pack and in the top three so uh I think maybe can we can forget them uh a bit but for sure they’re going to be they’re going to be in the in the leading pack uh during the CL and then we we got the the big um the big four which is like Tomas Sam uh Jeremy and um and Yan uh I think they they’re really doing well they are able to to go fast in uh every kind of condition and and for sure during 10 days so I think they learn a lot on on their on their boat and how to to say set up the the the fil Etc so uh I think maybe it’s not the the performance lay they they they they will have to they would imagine like for or Jeremy but finally I think they learn a lot maybe I don’t know if we maybe we want to hear Boris on the on the podium I think we do I think we’re with Maxim cogy who’s the local journalist and presenter and we should have this is a public uh public moment and he speaks to the crowd so okay okay take it away Chris okay I do the translation again of course is a school day on the Vay Globe h no and just to finish but maybe D can say a word about it because I’m I’m completely uh I’m so happy about the performance of Sam and and so happy that we have so much so many girls uh on on the top 10 and uh Justine peep Sam they they are all just amazing they they are sailing so well and and uh I mean you know we are talking about diversity about mixity but uh finally we we don’t have Kota we don’t have any any special thing to to develop this in in the fleet and and we have this fantastic athlet and uh and they are they are leading the pack and they are fighting with the uh with the the leaders and so I mean it just an a big inspir inspiration for uh for the little girl who who just stopped sailing and and and then can imagine 20 years later fighting for the for winning the V glob so and in in the same category so I think it’s like the only sport maybe with the the mechanic sport where boys are same starting line so and and they did it so well so no I love Sam and I love the way she she sail the way she loves to be at Sea I I think for sure that the person I know who loved the most being on on our boat so I’m really really really happy for for her but also um really impressed by the by the level of of Sam Justine Peep and and so I think d d was really um important in the inspiration of uh of all this this woman so so maybe she can react about that but and she’s not finished yet she’s gone R the world again yeah and we’re clearly we’re not getting the the audio from Boris on stage uh but but I I think you’re right is just uh is just maybe um telling about the about the race to to the public and uh and so it’s it’s really important for the public to to have a maybe a little chat with him and is is really Keen to to discuss with with everyone is is really I mean it’s impressive our relax is at at the start of of each race and how able is to to interact with with the public with the sponsors with with everyone and so uh I mean it’s it’s a lot of inspiration for me the way he he managed the the team and uh and his um his own time during this uh those special moments and uh I’m really sure he’s really tight but he’s able to to be um to be uh disponible to be to be okay with speaking with everyone so uh impressive we’re listening we’re trying to listen to the uh the president of the region this is so such an important part of the the Region’s public uh public face it’s such a big thing for the locals and it’s a very political thing as well isn’t it it is but this whole region this whole region and labdon is synonymous with offshore sailing it’s got such a strong history and you know every four years we see an amazing event and the the fact that they’ve stayed so committed for so long I mean it’s really put them on the map it’s put them not only on the sailing map but it’s a put them on you know a global map of everybody knows various locations in in France but they will all know where L abdon and the vond region is um which goes to show the strength and the power of this commitment to sailing that they have so I think we’re just uh finishing up and there you go closing titles and I think we should be off thank you very much byebye thank you very much Chris thank you d a little bit bumpy to start with we got there

    1. Perfekt gemacht.

      Chapeau.
      Das war einfach einmalig.
Liebe Grüße aus deiner Heimat Stadt Oldenburg

    2. Ahoi Boris – what a race..what a performance..what a result… Congrats to your achievement and excellence as skipper and to the best land team there is. Team Malizia's result once more is phantastic.
      Cheers!!

      Bis zum 10. November. 😊

    4. Congratulations to Boris, but one thing surprises me, he is German and hasn't said a single word in German in all of his posts. Does he hate Germany that much?

    5. Hearty congratulations to Boris. What a courageous decision to go north that almost paid off. Thanks for the excellent coverage Andi and Dee. Roll on November! 👏
