I have been using the Garmin Varia RCT 715 for about a year now. And in this vlog I show what this great piece of cycling equipment is all about. It is paired to my Wahoo Roam and works perfectly. I have a couple of tips to share with you, from my year long experience.
My observations are the subject of this ride. So come along and enjoy another great cycling adventure.

[Music] all [Music] [Music] right right guys I’m at on location uh testing out the garm Vara uh for you guys so I can just demonstrate what it does actually um um I actually got a cyclist coming it’s all the way back there by the flags about 100 100 yards or so there we go so it’s picked the cyclist up now and now the uh the light is started to flash which is good gives a nice little warning sign oh yeah I’m fine thank you buddy thank you yeah and now he’s gone by it’s all gone green yeah the Garman radar has really changed my cycle in life I wouldn’t be without it now it’s a fantastic piece of Kit I’ve had the Garman Vara for about a year now so I’m just going to give you an update and just show you if you’re not familiar with this unit uh what it does and how it aids you out on the road yeah so it gives you some really clear audio and visual alerts we have a car coming now I just show you so we got the radar off we got the light off at the moment there you go it’s picked it up now starting to flash and as you can see it’s in the lane there and we got another car behind it and now it’s clear just gives you that little audio alert all clear and the lane goes to Green when the Lane’s all clear don’t be fooled by that because you still could have a car behind you is either traveling at the same speed as you sat behind you or it’s traveling slower than you so yeah so always you know although that’s on green still be cautious guys when it picks up a car first off it normally go to Red and if the car driver sees you and slows down this then turn from red to Amber uh which is a really good indication when it goes to Amber you know that vehicle’s seen you and it’s slowing down it it would normally give you an audio alarm if it stays red um just to let you know that the car hasn’t seen you or possibly hasn’t seen you but it’s definitely not slowing down so just give a little glance over your shoulder to make make sure it’s not headed in your direction and as you see on the light it starts getting brighter flashes really randomly and let switch off again after a few seconds until um until that driver’s passed I always carry two lights so I got my little blonde trer flare there lot um and that’s like my little backup light so that one’s always going and this this light here is partially going to save on on power really works really well well for me so a lot is that car and there it goes and as you can see there on the wo you got a like a little symbol there and that’s to let you know that the light’s on and it’s just gone off now look and I’ll just show you that the light’s gone off not only does it um pick up vehicles for the radar which is really really good and give you a vehicle count so I think it counts up to about seven vehicles behind you it’ll also on the date overlay on playback it’ll also um show you their speed which is really uh interesting so let’s go and see on this one here let’s see this one here see how many cars are there so uh one’s just turned off did you hear that audio alarm and that’s it that’s the last one so it’s picking up vehicles I don’t know if you can see that white car coming out it’s coming at some speed it’s not slowing down it’s already picked it up and there it goes yeah so if you want the um data overlay guys always make sure before you leave for your ride is to open the app open the Garman ver app um because I know a lot of you are disappointed the fact that your uh the speed overlay is not is not displaying on the playback and remember if you stop for a cafe stop or you just stop somewhere and play around with your phone make sure that you reopen that um app before you leave um otherwise you get to the cafe and then everything after that you won’t have any any um speed overlays it’s to just always make sure when you set off open that up and then carry on with your journey he did slow down a little bit as you seen then it went from red to Amber and then obviously to Green when he passed and here’s a little bonus tip guys for any of you that own a specialized uh electric bike and you’ve got the um Mastermind TCU like I do here on my uh Creo um it will also display the uh the radar vehicle count for you on that as well [Music] [Music] oh [Music] right that’s it from me for today’s ride guys I hope that helped you in any way if you’re not familiar with the Garmin varia if you’re looking at Bome one U maybe you picked up a tip to anyway until next time guys make sure you get out there and ride and hopefully I’ll see you on the next ride bye for now bye-bye bye oh

    1. The Garmin Varia RCT-715 is a must have if you ride in traffic. I’ve had mine for about 9 months and would feel awkward if I rode without one.

One other feature is that you can share the Varia data when riding with friends. All they need is the Varia app on their phone and they can connect to your Varia in real time.

    2. I use the garmin on all my rides .i ride alone a lot. I have had one now for about two years.best bit of kit i have ever bought.its like having eyes in your back and also more time looking at the surface you are riding on rather than looking back all the time .worth every penny 👍

    3. wow, well behaved drivers you have there. lotsa elbow room for you. And yes i have that radar too. Cant live without it but no matter a side mirror is still a must have just to see who is coming and not getting sandwich by a long trailer!

    4. How long does it last with the light in off mode. Its a real shame it only records for 30 second burst and is a pain if you want to video a rear view ride in its entirety unless you know a way round this.

    5. Best bit of cycling kit I have bought …. paired with Garmin edge it's like having an extra pair of eyes … in traffic it's a god send love the fact I can see how many cars are behind me and how close they all are … a considered purchase but I wouldn't ride without mine now

    6. I've got the Magene radar, paired with my Wahoo Roam, and I love it. The beeping sound bugs me at times (on roads with lot of traffic) but better to have it then not.

    7. Thanks for the great video!

I have been pondering one of these for a while, but how does it cope without Image Stabilisation? Certainly the videos you posted seemed very clear, but have you ever thought you needed IS on some roads where there's potholes aplenty?!
