welcome back to lter R cycling podcast for our weekly show brought to you by our show partner join cycling we have a lot of racing to catch up on uh after the Criterium to Doan finished we have t Swiss balaza Belgium Tour tour of Slovenia tour feminine of the Pyrenees and the baby jerro which actually was televised on Euros sport this year which was pretty cool to watch there’s also some yellow C new safety rules have been announced by the UCI uh and that’s about it really racing heavy there’s a couple one sort of major transfer extension that’s been notified uh but yeah it’s uh been a big week of racing Benji how have you been you went to you’re still in Belgium or you back in the UK I’m back in the UK now but I got to be honest this last week I swear I I CH I chose the worst week to go to flers when it comes to races I feel like there were 10 races at the same time it’s hard I perceive this week so spent the last day and a half trying to figure out what actually happened at the races trying to catch up with all the racing even down to the baby jro towards uh t uh T fal pin for example but most importantly the big races like uh like to the Swiss to the Swiss women and see what those races brought and it’s actually been a good week of racing in my opinion it has lots to we’ve seen sprinters and this as well we’ve seen a lot of guys with schedules converging which is really difficult to analyze something times where you have guys peeking for the tour to France like philipson and guys like mer doing their last race before they have a period of rest after the jro same in the tour to Swiss with o Brooks uh Del Toro but then Yates and Al made preparing for the tour skilo indeed is preparing for the welta but I want to ask you for a second here so we’ve got the do that finished about a small week ago roughly the tour to Swiss that’s been spent racing this week we what is the preparation the best preparation for the T France seen by many teams because I feel like this year we see Adam yaten and almea doing this to the Swiss and run towards the towards the the to the France but then when it comes to the dolphin we saw basically RIT Remco hendley Etc all the big guns like exactly so is that because normally you’d go straight to altitude just after Doan a does that take away a week of altitude for the riders that do Swiss or do they do that differently by being a week longer on altitude before to the Swiss I think doofan is a traditional prep it gives you more space yeah to go to uh tenor indeed where I just was or wherever Isa or Bora alsoa um Rog there and Co so it’s but then maybe they thinking with the two climbers Benji Y and Alida do they need to be ready on stage one won or do they need those guys for the last 10 days and so I don’t really know maybe Yates just wanted more time to prepare after his concussion and and maybe not so good shape in at bro because I think he was on the provisional for doofan so but then it’s like this is where the the trickiness was okay pogy’s not doing either of the two but AO and ala both want to have leadership and then there’s Yates how would that so I don’t know which race he was supposed to do but yeah it’s uh I think think they did more wats in Swiss but in theory the start list at uh the Doan was Stronger whether that was actually the case uh I don’t think so in the end because of Yates and ala’s level being so so High um but we had a strange course they had loads of mountain top finishes too many in fact including the final TT uh I think the final TT yeah the final TT really should have been like a 30k flat TT um okay for Kung or or to see the separation between the GC guys because I just thought it was like we had a a prologue and then uh which was on by lampart which he loves a he loves a rain was it weather affected I don’t actually remember he’s a farmer so maybe he knows about cloud seeding and so he can like make sure it rains straight after he goes roll finishes his TT he just goes H whenever there’s rain so it’s like he takes more risks than other people which I think matters a lot yeah in a prologue a 4 and 1/2k prologue it does then Brian cochard won his second ever World Tour race in a Sprint in on stage two ahead of bling and dele dele was going to win quite comfortably I think but he uh dropped his chain as he came out of the corner he was well positioned Cedric bullins was was really really excellent actually uh for lotto Destiny Bola triy to fly but it didn’t go anywhere uh stage three T I didn’t see this one Benji did TBO just stomp everybody out uphill in the Sprint yeah basically ton was just very strong on that punch he finish on stage three and he destroyed people there and it’s also like he’s doing this in in this race he’s done it in ROM he’s done it in multiple races across the year already and I’m just very curious where this will go what are the the next plans on his schedule and then I look at tibon’s planning for the year and it’s it’s kind of pretty calm as in ATS to woni to the pon where undoubtedly he’s going to win a stage and I haven’t seen the actual parkour but there’s usually usually some kind of punch she rais in there that that I’d expect ion to be good at but classic I’d expect him to be pretty good at twoo to be honest so my question there is is he writing a calendar under his level yes I think so too he is I mean what he that bad he didn’t do the Arden again like no it’s not bad it’s but it’s just I’m surprised cuz this is the same calendar as last year more or less uh from what I can see I was just surprised he didn’t do am to gold race because yeah he he looks so good for that sort of race or even bans pale yeah he did Frankfurt uh but maybe he’s not as as good in the one day races as I think because he’s actually been better in the but how many World Tour race oh it’s his second world tour win after winning in Romy but yeah he’s won six races this year which is no small feat like he’s at 21 years old so he is a it’s like star in the making I do think the races he’s being selected for or absolute Perfections when it comes to his race planning where he can win like it’s it’s maximizing the the amount of Victories he can take in the it’s like it’s like the sending a a versatile Sprinter to races like Catalonia and romandy back in the day yeah yeah I feel like that’s the kind of calendar he’s doing kind of like grow did already in previous years as well and it’s really working but I also am like sitting on the edge of like I want to see him at at the bigger races now so I’m very curious he’s probably not going to a ground tour this series B B on what I’m seeing right now but this man would do pretty damn good at probably a VTA style parkour I don’t remember how many versatile KS there are in the v is here though I’d love to see him against Rog on some of those those there there’s a few of them but yeah to your point on Groves is his level worse than last year I don’t think so I actually think he he seemed pretty his Sprints actually in the jro were better than I expected but he hasn’t won this year in 38 race days and he won last year I don’t know seven races eight races most of them I think he won like three four seven World Tour races last year or six World Tour races he hasn’t won yet this year because at the jro there was Milan merer and then he did parin e in UAE so scheduling really really really matters for win optimization uh but back to Swiss stage four was the first Mountain Top finish up gotard pass couple of uh climbs beforehand uh no sorry it was like rolling beforehand it was a weird like stepped climb uh and UA the onew with Adam Yates and not Jo they basically leted out Yates with Del Toro who’ crashed and then crash Kerman came back and then leted out Yates who attacked and uh I can hear Luke fuming behind the mute button yeah uh there’s a breakaway up the road the last like three case to climb we on like a cobble it’s quite beautiful actually and torsson train was the strongest in the break he attacked halfway up the Godard pass after uh the sh in part where there’s a bit of a flat section and he was able to hold on from Adam Yates ala sat on skel mosa skel mosa was the strongest behind uh but he finished 25 seconds behind Yates trying won his first pro win and uh actually skila made sure very very sure in the last Corner that Almeida was not going to beat him to the bonus seconds for third Bernal quite good in fifth on 1 minute and then only margal o Brooks Richard cello deloro kelderman kman probably would have been in the uh I was would say with at least with only uh because he had to do a solo TT uh but y set a stall out Benji there he was 26 seconds ahead of alme on GC and uh he because we’re going to have an almea versus y discussion this swiss but I think it’s inarguable that y was stronger than Almeida on this climb yeah I think that’s very fair to say yes Almeida worked as a domestique in that in that segment but uh regardless of that I I would say adam8 was the strongest Rider in that race on that day and then the next day we go towards uh stage five and I’m thinking okay so far I’ve seen item8 be the strongest GC Rider I’ve seen almea be very strong as a as a arguably super domestique and when it comes to the competition I’m thinking okay rickell is pretty solid skelm Mo okay skelm Mo actually didn’t do that great on on stage five he actually lost a was a minute 40 or something goal has been sub expectation is how I’d say it I’d say Pitcock so far okay nothing out of the ordinary but okay m not really at his best but then on that on that stage five it’s basically the UA show again we have a One V one at the end of the stage between between Yates and almea and here Yates rides away from almea in the final and Yates wins the stage and Yates winning the stage I think that’s also partially because he hadn’t won the day before that he dropped ala to get that stage win right cuz otherwise you might might see a scenario of a Yates might stay together with almea to the line cuz it’s only 5 seconds and then gift it to almea cuz Yates already has a stage run the day before yeah I I agree he had won the day before I think Almeida had helped him a lot on this climb and then I could even see Al Mater in the radio when he was trying to chase y say maybe just wait let me win the stage but uh help yeah also these bonus seconds all adding up for GC now and the 5 seconds on the road so Yates then 35 seconds of Arma Bernal and I think inos launched the early climbs and there was really long valley Bernal and peock yeah they were quite good but Richard cello again fourth on the stage stage six was uh shortened stage it was a 42k stage which led to like the highest wats we’ve seen on a climb I think in in the 21st century just about it was like a top 10 performance all time by the calc you’re telling me you’re telling me that the Vol shorten stage with NE destroying everybody wasn’t the greatest performance of all time no they did Val should have won that no if if they pulled for him know man we don’t talk about that Alida wins this stage he actually catches up with the Y who again attacked early and then dropped the Y at the end skelo are just behind on 9 seconds so small gaps Martinez better there still Pitcock sixth again consistent poo Sanchez n ala dropping Adam Yates in the final was that a show of strength or was that Adam Yates being like like I’ve got it anyway no cuz GC wasn’t over at that point we had another big mountain sage the next day I think that was both going absolutely full gas I think so too then the next day inos paced uh for Bernal to try and put time into schelm moer I think uh it didn’t end up happening that way but again y I made a win one to arm in arm with Yates saying he after the stage he asked almea could he win and immediately almea said yes and then Yates said but it doesn’t matter because because the ne tomorrow ala will put one minute into me on the TT in the TT and so GC going into that final stage was the UAE show as Benji said Yates leading almea by 31 seconds Bernal in third on 151 uh 59 seconds ahead of schel mosa pretty handy Gap then Richard M and pitcock so pidcock’s still up there in seventh uh did Yates really believe that Benji that he’d lose a minute in this up it’s an uphill TT it’s a mountain the long a minute I did not believe I did expect ala to be better on this St TR perhaps that I did believe in but I wasn’t expecting anyone in a near a minute when it comes to that but also have we come to the point that two people within the same team being in the fight for the GC both start pretending to be the underdog against each other in a stage race cuz that’s what that felt like to me have we arrived at Adam Yates pretending to be the underdog to psychologically Warfare against almea his teammate I thought he was just being a bit magnanimous but uh yeah maybe in the end uh it’s it’s as we expected Al Madea a slightly stronger on the on the mountain TT winning the stage ahead of Yates by 8 seconds uh I think he did the climb one second quicker than Yates skel so it goes show how close their level was skelo a third on 20 seconds Bernal had a bit of a shocker he lost one 30 5 Seconds slower than davill Cruz 9 seconds slower than pelo Sanchez who honestly I thought was like a versatile Sprinter and he’s clearly better than that at climbing and uh he Bernal loses third on GC so no change on top Yates wins GC ahead of almea the UA pair absolutely dominant throughout the race uh 302 to skel mosa which is a huge gap to the best of the rest and then Bernal lost third by 10 seconds even though pitock waited for him I think the day before uh big shout out to richell the American younger fifth on GC in a world Tour stage race then pitock Mass only kman and Felix G probably for the course that is not a good performance from gal G uh I think yeah I think so as well because you’ve got the climbs he last year was good on now the benefit of a mountain TT should also help for someone like phix G yes he got 10 in this one no that that’s in GC when it comes to the actual stage itself he got 14th also W 2 minutes so that’s not outraged not horrible either but You’ expect better considering the climbing performance he put in um he put in in in 2023 cuz in 2023 he was one of the better climbers in the world to be honest at the to fron so I expected more from phelix go let’s hope for thecon that he is better at the to fron than at the at the to Swiss but we got to get to the discussion here we’ve got ala and Yates finishing one to in this race after finishing one to in multiple stages and I’m thinking true this we’ve got UAE starting the Twitter front with pachar with a US who crashed at the do after already not feeling too great going into it didn’t look too great after the crash you only really saw the early parts of the Doan to really judge him on so I don’t know where yo is at adam8 and ala look very much on point for the T FR outside of that they have well and spoit and I think Solair as well Solair has been been solid I’d say not outrageous not horrible and when it comes to pet and well bullet’s been better than wellin in my opinion the last uh last week and a half or at least in the running towards the T to France based on what I saw looking at this team is it a completely unrealistic scenario that UA could one two three to to France uh it’s not unrealistic because if rco RIT and Jonas are bad MH then we just saw in Swiss that they had two guys way better than everybody else uh but I think it’s probably pretty unlikely because it’s not it’s not just about climbing it’s also like can you get three guys through the gravel stage without a major problem with no rulers well they have four so 75% success is necessary yeah can you get them through the Sprint stages the cross wins Italian Rond de um that’s more what I’m thinking you know if you assume Ro is better Remco is better if vingard it depends as well if vingard R and if vingard turns up R turns up and Remco turn up in good shape then absolutely not um there’s no way then because yeah there’s like I made it really really good but you can see even his limitations in this race in that he cannot he cannot respond to attacks he cannot attack himself he’s like a onepac rider um and that’s why I also think okay maybe like the climbing overall level of Y and Al this week extremely similar but actually the way Yates can do it means you you can get better results because Yates can accelerate create a gap uh and then a group two plays up behind Alida he accelerates can he keeps the guys on their on his wheel fair and then you have to stop you’re not going to keep pacing even though you are strong with them um and SOA is the consistency guy yeah he’s just always there he doesn’t blow up even when he did blow up he didn’t blow up like Remco on the toml stage in the Welter he still came n in the Welter so um but yeah I one two 3 and GC I’m not that’s pretty I think it’s a bit farfetched at the moment but we’ll see when we see the stars to the Tour of France um I think that’s very fair and I agree when it comes to the team that right now they they look very good I us is the one I’m worried about because of the the stuff we’ve seen so far but I um just the gap between ala and and Yates and the others in this range was so notable and those are the kind of riders that are going to be fighting for the top five in the T France and perhaps the podium for the T France as well in some occasions and then I’m looking at Rog and Evol at the doofen and rogl won the do a but there’s question marks in that final stage Remco had question marks throughout the race but seem to have growing form in the race so maybe towards the T France it will be okay but in both I don’t necessarily see okay they look like they can fight for the victory at the T fron they look at like candidates for the podium right now and Yates and almea were a bit more promising in the Swiss race but again it’s not against r or AOL but the big question is Patrick with your adaptability in your training plan right now could you Podium the twitterr uh no I could not I mean we maybe one day you will answer yes one day one day I’ll be I’ll do like 300 wats for 10 minutes oh I’m come back I’m come back but no I wanted to talk about today join cycling and how it integrates with other things you may be doing as part of your like performance process or trying to become a better athlete so for example did you know that join cycling integrates directly with the athletes food coach which uh if you don’t know is an application that helps you uh track your calories or recommends that your caloric intake not just to lose weight but to actually perform as an athlete and joins workouts that directly synced to uh the athletes food coach secondly if you use something like interval. IU uh you can export your workouts for that week and put them into intervals. IU and know exactly what your TSS or training load will be that week and even track where your Fitness will be in intervals. IU I love using the pair of them intervals and join cycling I think they work really really well together because join gives me the adaptability and the training plans and then I can track it in intervals and uh but if you don’t even use software like that if you want to export your workout you can do that as well if you go to your suggested workout that day click on the workout you can see there’s an export workout button and once you click that you can export it to training Peaks to a wahoo do fit file to Garmin connect to a zift file and then you have your workout uh on those platforms or indeed it goes to your email you can download it and have it on your on your waho so I really like doing that especially if it’s a complicated workout of course if it’s 2x 20 minutes even my small brain can remember that and the whats I have to do but if it’s a little bit more complicated than that uh and I’m going Outdoors then I like to have it exported because yeah indoors to Hest I just use the the join workout player on my phone so those are some of the features or benefits of join around the app or how it integrates with other applications that I think are really really useful uh and if you don’t you if you’re using join already consider integrating it with something like intervals or exporting the workouts uh to training Peaks or to your head unit but thanks as always to join cycling for supporting the show as our show partner to the Swiss women Benji uh it’s still Midway through it finishes I think to I believe tomorrow but Demi varing no surprise looks in a commanding lead uh stage one yesterday was the mountain toop finish up the last sort of longarm which must be the most popular climb in the world at the moment Jesus they’ve used 17 times across the two races men and women she W had re in chabby chabby been in the breakway stage two was a TT up you guessed it vas al which also just like the men’s had the most unfortunately placed uh intermediate time checks yeah voling won that ahead of long bini and cadale my guess Benji is when looking at the time s that varing did this on easy mode she was literally I think chilling in like zone three Tempo on the flat section and in the last 10 minutes she opened up the T to uh yeah I think she put like 40 seconds into longini in the last 10 minutes okay fair cuz like if you look at the results alone then you’re like okay stage one 22 seconds onini shabby on 46 shabby was actually ahead before The Climb by by I think two minutes when the climb started roughly so voring had to crawl back towards shabby then eventually get over her realini was a proper competitor here as well but I did feel like Kini finished closer than I would have expected based on her preseason form so seems like she’s getting towards the form we hope she will get at the torron so that’s something I’m looking forward to seeing maybe something of again tomorrow even though tomorrow stage isn’t really uh well stage three is kind of that versatile hilly stage where wouldn’t Shock Me of Ving wins again to be honest but it’s just it’s not real any territory on paper and when it comes to the it today does it that surprise you that lorini does better than realini on a mountain DT or is it the flat body at the start that [ __ ] her I think realin messed up her pacing because she went quicker than Ving to the first intermediate so she clearly was pushing really really hard to the intermediate and so I mean she even trying to look now regini was seventh at T1 that’s way too fast she was quicker she was 6 seconds quicker than CAD out at T1 she was 6 seconds quicker than Brody Chapman or fogner or F could like she clearly pushed way way way too hard to T1 and I think that that cost her um but does that mean she can compete in a three kilm flat prologue no no does not definitely not hey we can try it she can try also curious Elena ivanchenko I don’t know if there was the tiso watch available at the T1 um because there was at T1 when hater won in the men’s race so evchenko smashed it to T1 so of schweinberger and then they sort of chilled or just not as good on the climb but yet tomorrow in the next stage I think uh I can’t really see anyone putting voling under too much pressure frankly I think there’s going to be fights to get rid of if your F could have Reese in 10th or 11th on GC I’d be looking at those stages and trying to put Bradbury and Sprat and realini under pressure and sort of these medium mountains with descent uh towards the Finish yes indeed when it comes to other races next to to the Swiss women there were uh quite a few other races but while a Belgium Tour happened started off with an IT won by certain Wen gold and then after that Sprints happened and I was looking forward to philipson versus malier we had the typical Koka Hast finish I don’t actually remember but isn’t this also part of a different race throughout the season because it’s like the the The Flash run into like a final up hill Dragon the last 100 meters in kah Sprint Eddie became the enemy of Belgium we watched it at the flandrian hotel yeah he was with lamp refused to pull and then Casper uden got toed I know I remembered Ray but I don’t know what the [ __ ] it’s see even you don’t remember all these all the a belgi GPT race how am I supposed to remember it could have been BR the could have been [ __ ] GP cric on uh smaller craft BR not it wasn’t it wasn’t philson one that um but yeah this is just Malia territory this is where he’s trying to say he really he’s pumped up in these stages he’s like trying to say you know with philipson and Coy here I’m the best Sprinter in the world there’s no Milan but it’s the three of the four best sprinters in the world in my opinion and uh he won the first Sprinter head of Phillipson Coy third Pier barer on Philip Wagner which is a Cony team he was uh he was fourth actually um but yeah it’s with that TT gain and then not too many difficulties in the later stages like VAR basically uh he just had to well not not stuff it up but right a sensible race and he have a pretty good chance of winning uh any anything else from stage I didn’t see stage three Benji what happened to meria there he was sprinting from Narnia basically his positioning wasn’t good P10 I think he was when the start of the Sprint happened Ricard was doing a great lead out for uh for philipson so he was delivered perfectly and then he just finished it off to be honest and then we haven’t spoken about the most important part of today’s podcast to be honest because it was stage four the queen stage of the Baza Belgium Tour arguably more prestigious than winning the tour France and we’ve got loads of Murs in that stage like imagine the most epic Mur stage in the world with the mut d a billion times and there was none other winner the legendary greatest cyclist of all time Alex aramburu what are your thoughts I mean huge win for aramburu unfortunately for him in the TT uh wow he was close he lost 17 seconds in the TT and then on this stage he won with a gap to VAR gold of 12 seconds plus the 10 bonies how the [ __ ] am I tripping gifted he gifted it where’s my math Miss I shouldn’t say that did varus take bonies in other stages yeah he at the at the intermediate or was there a Holden kilometer in this in this race I think there is so without those intermediates I think garon Brew would have won GC uh but well I I really no offense to baz Belgium but I didn’t follow the intermediate that was a bit much but yeah AR big win I also want to give a shout out to Pier Goa he is like he didn’t have a py level Revelation in the classics but he is a he is a revelation in the classics he was uh to be honest when he was a trainee I was like this is like a MK just like another misk French Rider they’ve picked up from their un team and then eventually their club team and then this year just like the rest of the team he’s absolutely firing fourth in GP Marcel uh 11th in envelope I believe he was like the did the quickest murder we in envelope 11th in DW of Lon third in trob BR Leon the quickest M envelope what the [ __ ] are you smoking quickest Mo andb [ __ ] it’s all the same [Laughter] man did he do flesh I don’t [ __ ] know he didn’t do flesh he would have done the quickest Mur we there too yeah I’m did the quickest MO M I won’t say the full names anymore I just called them all M and then you can’t be wrong so clearly very very nice season but AR baru you know there’s no shame losing to that man he’s just too good uh in that yeah it’s arguably arguably disrespectful to the sport of cycling that 10 years ago they brought out the golden kilometer just to ruin Adon Buu’s chances in 2024 dud he hadn’t won he had his last World Tour win was only World Tour wi was in bass country in 21 he won liuzza stage and GC in 22 and he didn’t win last year and now we’re in juny one this stage so um but he has 700 UCI points so and it’s only the beginning it is he’s coming to the to front my friend what stage is good Aron baru lit seriously I stage two really really good for him uh actually no I don’t think he F pogy on San LCA can he be the Naas can he be the victori yeah come on be this is your opportunity be say he’ll be because if he does it Benji no one will care if he doesn’t do it but if he does it you can clip it he’s not going to win stage two he’s going to take the yellow Jersey on stage one it’s a flat Sprint there’s [ __ ] no chance he like 20ks from the finish the last client he can’t Sprint reality is nobody will remember I said this if it doesn’t happen but if it happens everybody in the comment section will be like see Benji sets so in this random weekly show in June that’s nice for Aaron Brew to win but uh the last stage of the Sprint won by Tim Mo who who did a a very extended celebration which he was kind of trying to say it was like a no big deal but then also like what did you think celebration I loved it it kept going on and on and on after made four different variations of a theme he beat philipson again Tom van asbook third which Tom van asbook also uh actually has he won a proval stage this year is actually 34 years old actually having his best season for like 5 years um he all performing really well X Umble Rider right 2015 era I do not know what M Belgian rulers was on ybo in 2015 Matias vek comes fourth here stuffs up the last Corner if he comes third he wins GC that’s how close this race ended up being I think on stage positions maybe but varish gold holds on after that TT gain and intermediates throughout the week to win GC 4 seconds ahead of vek and 7 Seconds ahead of Aron Buu very very very close uh there indeed uh maybe they could have had a maybe a little bit of a harder stage but the renew tour has a in August some harder stages uh Belgium’s only well to one we race uh Slovenia or anything else from this has philson lost his Aura what other narratives what do you think about the rumors that uru might be joining ARA and will he be a golden duo with mozzato I think it makes a lot of sense because if you’re ARA trying not to get relegated you take both a big scorer you if you put Aron Brew on a because he actually goes to like a lot of hard races but if you put him on a full farmer schedule of one days he can score so much like he can score 2,000 UCI points just about every ra is a forer schedule for Ruru Sor exactly two friend R for him but you also take the points away from moar one of your relegation Rivals so I think we’ll see a little bit of that where those teams are trading Riders and paying more for those Riders because you take away the points from your competitor is I agree but to be honest the whole like group of aramburu like Riders honestly has become more expensive over the last couple years due to the the point system because before then they weren’t too super relev for teams yeah well he does the most prestigious [ __ ] stage of the world the other day but like no you can find yourself a stage from you know in in do pro races you don’t have to pay a million euros for stages in do pro races you know like and he is a better Rider than that but yeah to your point I think they have gotten more expensive Benji because it’s like well he can go to Ebor Frankfurt Podium then you send marel tro lagia all that stuff um britania classic maybe can run seventh sixth 80 points thanks for coming y uh national champs I thought cofish did he come top 10 in San R uh in the past yes yeah yeah Kus also wouldn’t surprise me because they have the Basque uh well Kus is big in Spain also they have some B trainers I think and they also have the brothers so that also would not surprise me if he went to kofus who also in the fight for for relegation um but yeah I feel bad for moar losing another another of their top scorers it’s going to be tough for them next year it’s probably because they didn’t pay him as much as AR did yep uh what else uh philipson and and M do you still think philipson oh sorry do you think mer should do the two and seeing his shape it also depended on how you perceive remco’s shape you know if you I think yeah yeah true if you believe he can Podium the tter FRS then you might consider him full team for MCO if you but then again I take Merle anyway that’s the thing does like that both of us are aligned for the last few months a good Remco also needs a good merer yeah I also think merer if you tell him we’ll bring Bert to the tour you can go for the Sprints on the real pure Sprint days mhm on the gravel on the other stages you have to help rco surely he says yes yeah I think he would say say yes do you want to bring Bert as well because yes no offense but Barrett is not going to be the most supportive rider for Remco I think he’s not like I he’s not he will want to he’s definitely going to be happy to do that work but he’s not the ideal character for that in my opinion I mean how did quickstep lose all the time to cous in the Welter last year it’s because they couldn’t control a breakway to save their life yeah but it’s not going to be their responsibility all the time to to control the breakway it’s the other teams that will that will have UAE will be the one controlling a lot of breakaways or trying to into the tour yeah I don’t know I think I think Bert can play can help Remco a bit on the flat and uh sure if you have I wouldn’t leave him out for a t bot style Rider but they got Mone Casper Pon you know is he that good so well if Pon is going towards the tour to France is H Pon has lead out from earlier he’s not as prominent as on Le in the last year and a half the DU hasn’t worked together at much then you have the the benefit of the rider that was already planning goal and Mer feeling like he has a lead out yeah I would take we may take both drop vanv to take but what is that based on dolin a for more yeah I guess I wouldn’t do that I would keep on welding in but if REM if Remco then is not in the shape to Podium then to me it becomes absolutely clear you have to take M CU we just saw the pressure the team was under in the Netflix series and that was not fabric ated stages go past without winning a stage well there’s a lot of Sprints here and you have arguably the best flat Sprinter in the world I think me yeah I think it’s a no-brainers to take him actually is it surprising that alra is not in the team of Remco yet or has he gotten worse over the years and therefore not necessarily the idle candidate for it because I feel like in the past the man has done well in climbing stage in the past and in Str he had great results over the years he’s become not as good as in the past but you’d still expect him to be a solid acid moscon style in a Remco team I never understood why that wasn’t the coupling that they did in theory like asgr should be the way better version of Casper Pon like yeah Cas asran was doing third last man lead outs this part of the train in 2021 for Cavendish it was asran ballerini mku in the last two Cas and he can climb and he can he’s a big engine but uh I agree it’s surprise he’s not on the list Benji he was in the Belgium Tour no no fantastic results either tt6 but then in the Aaron baru stage not there so well um only one man that can win that stage huh exactly yeah you got to be special to win that one but yeah it’s uh it is curious he’s out of contract we’ll see what happens uh see what happens there in t Slovenia we won’t go through every stage but jaavan Otti won GC by 10 seconds Ahad of Bill b 26 seconds Ahad of Julia pazari Healey snuck away to win in the last stage ahead of Kristoff although I do think Bahrain uh throughout the week if they’d gone all in for uh pay bill Baal particularly chasing alotti uh in the third stage I do think Bill Baal should have one GC here but alotti often uh riding you know defending himself particularly in the last stage he did a fantastic job to win GC uh so yeah full marks full marks to him and he’s actually had a really nice season was quite good in the jro balouse and Gran uh went one two in the in the flat sorry bous Gran and uh who’s the other one uh oh God I had the list in front of me ah did Kristoff win one no he didn’t so B alot bilau and H yeah second the last stage he was denied the last stage um but yeah bahin bit strange that morch and Bill b in the group a clear of Kristoff’s group with alotti isolated and they I I couldn’t really figure out what they were doing Paul double also good result uh baby jir Benji who is Yan WIA the next the next pagat I’m hearing the next pater I I don’t know which Rider he is he just won the Jiro next gen which is the the baby version of the jro U23 version of the Jalia now in the past we have said that the Jiro diala NE gen the U23 version doesn’t necessarily always translate to the biggest talents in in World Tour but that being said I feel like that’s different with yardo wiar because I I swear I’ve been following this guy for a year and a half at least now and he’s been doing really well when it comes to Juniors winning races left and right and stepped up to U23 he’s now 18 years old so that’s first year U23 and he’s been rather successful winning alair tour getting second in Lazar H winning races throughout the season as well and then I look at Jon next Jen and it really started to show a he’s he’s very versatile because at certain points in the past was like okay he’s a puncher okay he can climb okay he’s got a punch at the end of a climb and he’s seems to be a super light guy I don’t know his exact weight but his attacking style looks like pogacha and I think that’s where that comes from because he attacks like in the hoods in a in a very accelerative way is that because the people that he was with don’t have it anymore to respond potentially because he really has something left at the end of the clan while the others don’t but he dominated that race I think that’s fair to say even though in GC it’s only 52 seconds on Pablo toes from UAE next gen or gen Z sorry sorry all these names of the U23 teams these days and another uh spers Marty Po from Israel Premier Tech in F also on roughly a minute but I really feel like he had everything under control he said after a specific stage I think yesterday he said okay um yeah I I felt like I had to defend myself today when it comes to my positions are the breakway going up the road I don’t care the the the closest Rider is on 19 minutes I don’t care they can win and when it comes to the riders in the pellaton it was actually quite easy because they never even tried to attack me so I like I like talk like that and he delivered so I’m expecting big things from this man I heard a rumor that he might have signed with with Lotto Destiny already for one or two years after the U23 segment or something but I’m not 100% certain of that I don’t vividly remember the the rumor that has passed the desk but uh I’m looking forward to see what this guy got you got anything else on this rest yeah he’s another one kind of like rco of not the same Junior results as rco but you see in juniors small man wins Classics races he must then therefore be able to climb and punch it’s like mathematically impossible that he is not a decent climber if he’s winning tour of Flanders Juniors at his size and then indeed we saw that he was stepping on people here so really really he’s been the best U23 Rider indeed as Benji said as an 18-year-old best you know Nord Hagen was in this race had to abandon y Vidar wins he’s been the best U23 GC Rider so Lotto Destiny once again the talent Factory dele lambre van Hills vid they keep producing these Belgian talents at lot of Destiny in fact more so than quickstep more regular than sudar quickstep um in terms Punchy GC guys when it when it comes to quickstep in the past they had this like development team I think it was called Clan constancia I think that was like Mar and tratnik were on that no yeah I think that was a South afri a South African wine brand if I remember correctly Garcia CA Cav narv shockman that is 2016 so quite a few Riders we know already 2015 I see ah the brother of bhan so edic bashka which was a bit of a sprinter back in the day before that it was called eics and I see the hogard brothers there Nick Schulz being on that wizowski who was a world tour pro for a significant amount of years no clue where he ended up I think he might be in q36.5 ALA FIP was in that team patri Conrad cesa Petri vak good puncher back in the day in the bra Bell Star Race and those are the four years that I remember from this but they also then they had 10 year World Tour Pros yeah and they had a specific year where they signed oin almea and Ian Garrison who then dipped out but those two in the same year if I recall where they reset a bit so it’s like Lotto is doing well when it comes to in-house development but quick step’s been good in the past when it comes to that in-house development but they were also solid at signing New Riders that were young but I feel like when it comes to quickstep man is good um lamperti has been has been showing quite a bit was solid but in the last two years since Remco I feel like I’ve missed a few that make sense yeah come along I mean they’re young so it’s too early to R off man obviously but has a guy who’s won races and he also he was at this race yeah and he he won two of the sort of uphill Sprint stages easily uh uh or like versatile Sprints one was ahead of Tim Tor totenberg uh the first was ahead of Conforti and gal G who’s a Slovenian on UAE uh Team em UAE team Emirates genz doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue um but he I think is maybe a last year U23 so he I dare say will be on the world tour team next year but yeah what do you think of maner being in I was debating this I think with bote and I was what do you think about man he’s won a pro race already he’s on a world to team doing J U23 with the dvo team not with his Nation like in lavenir doing with the dvo team isn’t this like a similar story as when we had Maro Schmid doing Elite World Championships no U23 World Championships after winning or being very competitive and in actual World Tour races before that it feels very similar to me that story so we’ve had this discussion before and I don’t know what the good answer is because on one it his U23 so we can ride whatever you want but if you then win races at a certain level that means you’re as good as being on a certain level but does that mean you should be taking away the opportunity of doing those races just because you’re too good for your category not really in my opinion it’s very difficult I don’t know the solution I I don’t mind it because it means like you know I then look okay Mana how how close was Lorenzo con 40 the bani rider oh he was actually quite close behind maner in the first Sprint of maner once I’m like maybe con actually is really a decent versatile Sprinter because I’ve seen him now do it against a guy who’s winning at World Tour or pro pro level rather um wait for example federov won no got fov rot the it Elite World Championships and 5 days raater later won the U23 world championships that’s a similar story yeah he wrote the elite one before he won the U23 one did he in 2022 yeah 2022 he did the it of Elites and then did the U23 road race and won it yeah I don’t think you should be allowed to do that I think once you compete in world championships as an elite then that’s like does that mean Tylin could do the world Champs U23 this year even though he did World Champs Elite last year like that would be that then that to me is a little bit ridiculous but this might be a very dumb question but are they U23 events at the Olympics no way no no okay sorry uh speaking of 18-year-olds Matthew Brandon won the last stage uh the Brit on uh Visa b dvo in a Sprint ahead of burans who n Nicholas burans who’s like a a big German engine he’s like 2 me Paul and I I dare say he will be on the world tour team next year he’s turning 21 of November and he he looks like a Dar Hall regen uh maybe even a little bit better frankly uh Buren and Brennan uh Brennan looks like a superstar in the making so also World Tour next here right yeah you are correct Benji you are correct 25 26 27 so these contracts they ain’t short for the big the big guys who were Juniors 6 months ago uh other wise uh in two feminine International Dees guini on the first stage then oo osto L on the uh Bas team laal I can’t pronounce it correctly it’s like hardest this is the hardest one in sports Benji good he did it in the end she1 GC ahead of Valentina cavala and her teammate urani Blanca that was also t on Eurosport if you want to catch up but the rule changes Benji you’ll have to run me through the yellow card system okay like I’m an idiot so the UCI has chosen to implement and or Test new rules in cycling for safety purposes to to try to make the sport safer which initially that’s a great line I think that’s great I think that’s what they should do they should be trying new stuff to try to make the sport safer and the biggest headline was like you said the introduction of yellow card system in this sport now we’ve been talking about a yellow card system offline and online for the last 5 years because let’s be honest we don’t feel like the current rule set is necessarily adequate nor applied consistently during the races in this Sport and there’s specific moments where a relegation or a disqualification might not fit while a yellow card might fit and I don’t know whether this will solve it one of those occasions in my opinion is what happens if a sprinter is in the wheel of a lead out the lead out is done with his work and after that being done with that work that lead out hinders the opposing sprinters the Sprinter of that lead out team ends up winning the race but can never be penalized for the work of that lead out a good solution for that in my opinion would have been an imple implementation of a yellow card system where the lead out can get a yellow card no where the Sprinter can get a yellow card if his lead out [ __ ] someone else over to increase the chance of a sprinter and maybe this could be some part of this new yellow card system in the future but so yellow cards in the sport how will this work according to the according to the uci’s new uh rule set declaration so a system of yellow cards will be introduced from 1st of August 2024 with a trial phase running until the end of 2024 at men’s and women’s professional road races these yellow cards will represent the sanction but won’t actually physically exist so you won’t see the UCI comair rolling open his window and like pull out a yellow card like a referee in a football match that’s what we won’t see but they will be listed on the race commun which is like a document that is given out after each race finishes that includes the fines but also now the yellow cards and sure this Rider does something wrong gets the yellow card what happens then one card not much two yellow cards if it’s during a one- day or stage race that will lead to a disqualification from the race and a 7-Day suspension starting the day following the receipt of the second card so after two yellow cards you get a 7-Day suspension after three yellow cards within the 30-day period you get a 14-day suspension starting the day following the receipt of the third card and if you get six yellow cars within a single year you get a 30-day suspension starting the day following the receipt of the sixth card clarification at the bottom says a yellow card that has been taken into account for the imposition of a period of ineligibility shall no longer be taken into account in the future I have no clue what that sentence means it means if you get a six uh 30-day suspension the six yellow cards get like erased when you then come back from the suspension and get further yellow cards so like once you get the suspension you get uh reset to zero so but in what way as in you get reset to zero after the six yellow card not after the two and three because otherwise you’ll never get to six if you get reset to zero after two yellow cards yeah then you can never get to two yellow cards and then you get the maybe it then means like you don’t get a after five you don’t get another 7day suspension because you already served a 7 Day for the two and a 14 day for the three yeah I see that now that’s confused me cuz to me if you get two yellow cards during a a one day or I this is also weird to me the two yellow cards during a one day or stage race by saying it like that it sounds like you need to have both in the same rise but that’s probably not what they mean yeah is this within a certain period of time well the two is during a one day yeah yeah the you have to get two Yow cards during a one day race that’s that makes no sense when you also get disqualified with two during a 21 stages exactly like if you get two in a a one day race you you probably done something you need to be banned I think I think it’s good I think it’s good we’ve been asking for this Benji ultimately okay the fine details should be massaged a little bit will be a trial phase uh I do think if philipson receives a yellow card but isn’t relegated for his move on vanard in stage three of the tour last year does that make him behave a little bit more in the rest of the race because then he would in theory receive a yellow for his move on against Anor later in the race and be disqualified and again you get disqualified you lose green you’re gone yeah so I do think it’s really really good I think the suspension amounts for the for the three and the six are worly inadequate if you have six six yellow cards in a [ __ ] year six in a year that means every second Sprint you’re doing something that’s almost sanctionable y you should be suspended for at least 3 months I agree got suspended for three months for one thing right yep exactly like if I take a look at this there’s multiple things where I’m like this seems off and like you said the first one is two yellow cards during a one day race or stage race to me that should be two yellow cards within x amount of days leads to a 7day suspension then obviously if you do get that you also need to be disqualified from the race you’re at in my opinion as a consequence because then you’re suspended from that day onward so that’s only logical when it comes to three day yellow cards within a certain reg uh period sure 14-day suspension and then I look at six yellow cards within a year it’s almost as if I agree it should be way more than 30 days if you have six yellow cards within a year but this would also mean the way I’m reading this that if you get four yellow cards you will once again get a sday no it depends on when you have it so I don’t know to me to me this is an very imperfect system I I would like this system to be as simple as you get two yellow cards within x amount of time you get a 7day suspension you get three yellow cards in a in a in a specific amount of time you get a 14 days what whatever x amount of even three three yellow cards within a 30-day period sorry but that’s pretty bad pretty [ __ ] bad I think yeah and it depends on the gravity of things we’re going to be that are going to be given yellow cards so I don’t know uh I I don’t know if these will be you know how when there’s like the in the ucci rules there’s like the offense and then the sanction do they go with the fine for the offense now in the rules so according to the UCI media press release this yellow card system yellow cards were going to be given at at penalties represented in the rule set 12. whatever whatever I open that rule set and that’s literally a list of all the possible penalties in the sport without a specific mention of yellow cards in it so unless they adapt to rules and specifically say which rules it can be applied on this is purely based on the subjective opinion of a commiss in a car when to give a yellow card which I think is also a mistake but maybe that’s because the rules haven’t updated accordingly yet they got to IR that out because like is this for when a guy nearly kills someone pushing them into the barriers in a Sprint is or for littering is this for yeah for littering exactly is this for exactly is it for littering is it for when alaf filipo COV took their helmet off I can’t remember which one to change it CU Al Filip is it like we think oh this is because Matthew vapol laughs when he’s given a fine for his his elbow on bie and that’s what this is because really the commissaires have been too chicken to relegate anybody when they win for the last four years y but it could be for it could be abused also or not just not abused but it could be like really inconsistently applied uh between races so that’s a concern SEC they could ALS it’s not just for Rise I’m pretty sure it’s also like if you’re DS you can get a yellow card for driving Dangerously in the Convoy good but then again if you drive very dangerously got to get more than yellow card in my opinion yeah exactly and and I think you know six yellow cards within a one-year period 30-day suspension assuming it’s for like reasonably serious things that seems inadequate given that yeah but uh we’ll see we’ll see It’ll be noted in comm’s report in from August 1 in uh UC races just in general I have a feeling about this that I like the implementation of a a yellow card system it’s a good idea but it’s implemented in a UCI way as in it reads like it’s not been fought true fully the way it’s implemented but then again it’s a testing period so I hope they learn from that testing period and that uh we quickly but also I don’t like the testing period being based on necessarily a not so thought true system because then teams might be like oh we don’t like the system at all we don’t and people might be like oh we don’t like yellow card system as a consequence of a a badly built yellow card system right yeah they might say look how unfair it is and it’s you know you’re getting yellow cards or suspensions for minor things like littering and it’s you know vandol gets held out of a britania classic because he led the week before or something um yeah could happen could happen because we don’t we don’t know exactly what they’re going but I think it’s a good idea I I’m very very very much looking forward to seeing it implement next few things there’s four other things there’s an option to expand a 3 km rule to a 5 km rule I think in the past some races tried to do that or have done that in races but they expanded three kilom rule to a different point but now it’s like physically written into the rules right that they can expand it to Five K whenever they deem needed for example I think this is actually a it’s not going to be a super consequential rule change but I think there’s situations where it can be useful like there’s a downhill at about 3.5 km to go everybody is fighting for their position for the 3 km segment okay by moving to 5 km that fight is now before the downhill and not in the downhill itself right I think so it’s like I again don’t understand this Benji is it who decides now you organize this kind I think but but couldn’t they petition the organizers to do it in the first place didn’t they ask ASO to do it on stage three of the 2 or 21 where there was a huge with ha and Co I think so but maybe now the organizers can do it without consulting the UCI yeah I is my guess I think they’re going to do this in the tour um already on some stages so yep they were going to test it in the tour which is oh and also the same is going to be tested with a three second rule in Sprint stage but we got to talk about it I swear the 3 second rule has been applied numerous times in Sprint stages before what do you mean like the that they don’t put people on a Time Gap when they’re on a gap of 40 m yeah so the rule set is now saying that the vaguely from memory now because I just killed the UCI media tab which was stupid but basically there was a one second rule in the past according to the document where if if a group is ahead and you were dropped by more than a second you’d be put on a gap in my memory that was already 3 seconds in Sprint stages but according to this rule 3 seconds will now be the default or something yeah I think what actually happened I remember I remember remember G reminded me CU remember when rogich and maybe carapaz or Bernard got put on a gap in a Welter Sprint stage years ago and they and fr like protested the next morning I think it was well to 2020 and so what Comm says could do so the spirit of the rule was basically 3 seconds no Gap but if you were not in the biggest group and there was a gap of 1 second they could put you in on time so you had to be in the biggest group so but normally in practice in the Sprint stage 99% of the time in practice so let’s I’ll give you an example okay there’s a lot technical Corner last 300 M there’s a not a crash there’s just someone loses the wheel and the sprinters go clear and win 10 of them uh and there’s a gap of 1.2 seconds from 10th to 11th yeah I’m pretty sure and then there was that happened that happened sequentially throughout the groups if you were in like a group of five just behind the Pelon or something you could get put on time even though there was a gap of Less Than 3 seconds so now it’s I think supposed to be like a hard 3 seconds between Riders which is what I actually thought it was until I forgot that what happened in that fter stage uh very very technical stuff will it stop GC Riders still sprinting for 13th in tter France stages probably not um but might disincentivize a few so I think it’s good that the rules are there these two Chang is it the ideal solution for three second rule I think yeah 325 kilm rule I think we’re going to have discussions about that for the rest of Eternity in this sport but next to that there was also I don’t believe in the 3 km rule okay I think it doesn’t matter sport I don’t think it makes anything safer I don’t in it I think that’s somewhat Fair uh the issue is that we I never know if the UC or anyone that implements these rules actually did research on the data to see whether these rules or the Tre col rules ever effective in the first place but anyway all that aside there was also appointment of a safer safety analyst sorry but wasn’t there already a UCI safety manager what’s the difference well safe is like an independent third third part or supposed to be a body outside of the UCI outside of the teams funded by the teams no how independent is it cuz right now it sounds very much in in conversation with UCI and teams in a very close compact thing no I think it’s independent of the UCI okay is it independent of like like we have it thing um The Rance Union or is it actually independent no I thought I thought safer was created by the teams okay um we’ve had some drama in that right because we had the new president AIG gcp which is thingy from jand caland and then I I swear there was some criticism from Richard pluger on the safer uh thing not moving forward because of politics which from the outside it’s very hard for us to realize what’s actually happening in in the in the structure of safer but I felt like nothing was happening until this whole release arrived which it’s good that this showed up but finally yeah I also didn’t know what was I like I think the change in the arcp then influenced what was happening with safer and I also thought is it dead in the water but no it seems like it’s now there will be a safer safety analyst for races uh which s like yeah if you if you think safety is not good enough then you would then say the UCI safety manager hasn’t been doing a good enough job either Fair last Point restriction on earpieces this is a very controversial one in my opinion they want to test the effects of a restriction on wearing and using earpieces in races this year measure will be tested in selected professional one day races and Stage races I find it very good that they want to test the effects and that they’re not necessarily just applying a rule so whatever your opinion is on earpieces you should applaud that the UCI is testing what site has the benefits in my opinion now when I think about removing earpieces I start to get worried but because I’m thinking okay I like sports tactics so I’m thinking okay will less tactics be possible it will be harder to apply tactics when you’re not in contact with your team car on the other hand you won’t have a DS shouting in your ears a get to the front dangerous Corner coming whatever whatever but on the other hand Riders also won’t get information like all there’s gravel on the road in the next descent or the gaps towards the group ahead is that so if the earpieces of the teams are gone I feel like riders need a neutral race radio in their ears to know what the gaps are and to be warned of danger roll coming ahead I think yeah you can’t from a safety perspective with 200 people on the road with possibly a landslide happening I mean how can you just remove earpieces Al together I just I don’t know do you think this is motivated by safety Benji or like the thought that earpieces don’t make the races entertaining and Riders are robots and you know they should just ride on feel and panach and head units and and ear pieces are turning them into robots with no open racing I think I think it’s probably a little bit of both depends on which person is behind the scenes working on things because I visually remember there being a documents um I was going to say Geneva Convention but I’m pretty sure that’s not related to cycling it had like a name of a city what sorry cycling is in there if you if you look closely enough Jesus lug Lugano a Lugano document I think from like the 2000 somewhere where the UCI declared that to to like limit the progress of technology to not make the sport robotic that’s my interpretation of that document but that could be one of the reasons that the UCI is still performing I think Michael Rogers sent me that document uh last year in Rel to fuler having that thing install at bian yeah the glucose the continuous glucose monitoring device which is banned in competition uh but yeah I I disagree that uh like power meters and head units make racing boring I think that’s actually uh kind of a misunderstanding of how races actually take place or or the Dynamics of racing indeed that if you think Riders are just first of all pro riders can ride within 10 watts of like without AIT they can pretty much know within 10 what they’re doing like Riders know when their power meter is miscalibrated immediately even like slightly off so the idea that and they’re still going to train with them so I just they’re still riding to feel and also when you’re following on the in the mountains you don’t say oh well actually they’re going a bit fast even though I could hang on I’m just going to I’m going to ride my the whats I want to do it just I don’t see it um maybe I think that’s a a throwback to the sky days where Sky Had A pacing plan but today n cuz like for safety I kind of agree that yeah having a million directors to 200 people saying get to the front can’t be the best mate I just realized the Olympics is being written with four Riders per team three Riders per team two Riders per team without earpieces yeah going to be absolute chaos that’s how keyer won yeah and because of ear pieces yeah like was that better kind of It kind of was the The Rise was entertaining but it made the Netherlands look so stupid I think if the Riders ride without earpieces all year yeah K NOA wouldn’t have won I think so too actually what happens is no break gets allowed to go if a break does go it gets no leash and it’s because it’s like well they’re used to the Dynamics of no head no earpiece racing and so kyera would have the second they saw she was on three minutes or whatever because they do get showing the time Gap yeah then they would have with 100 Cas to go just drilled it so I don’t think if they ride with it it would have made it better um yeah anyway I think it’s good that they’re testing the effects instead of just applying a rule uh the one thing Luke picked out of the UCI is a long release so I know this is heavy on rules uh but this is actually most interesting one to me and is on transfers and that is um that the the new this is just a like not even like a footnote just a random thing but he Luke thinks and I sort of agree it’s what they’re saying they might change the first of August rues so if you don’t know if you don’t know you are allowed to negotiate with riders on another team mhm who are under contract that year in respect of future years for which they are not under contract I.E moar were legally oh not leg of course legally but under the UCI rules marar were entitled to negotiate with Carlos Rodriguez uh in January 2023 in respect of 24 they were not able to register any contract they had with him yeah with the UCI until August 1 nor announce it till August 1 okay question question what about stuff like the the conversation we heard of inos talking to them last year when he was still under contract with quickstep for this year that is not permitted without the agreement of the team I.E sudar quickstep so you cannot approach a rider and speak to him or her about signing with your team in respect of a contract year for which they already have a contract with another team uh without the agreement of that team so that’s why essentially that that creates the buyout situation Benji yeah so to be clear what we are well interpreting from that one line from the I think it was the calendar announcement on S the new rules I don’t actually know which of the two it was we’re concluding or interpreting that this could be a change in the date of which you can register contracts with UCI yeah this is not about buyouts this is about normal contracts like when they’re out of contract and you signer from another team and the UCI said these new rules faor greater transparency BYO imposing communication obligations but also offer greater flexibility by authorizing the registration of riters without a contract and no longer limiting the time periods for signing contracts or communicating the arrival of a Riders so basically what that means is when moar signed Carlos Rodriguez yeah it’s a pre-contract because it’s actually under the UCR rules they cannot register him with the UCI yet so say you’ve done a great scouting job you’re a money ball team and you’ve got a guy in but then the other team realizes they’re pretty good you can then get into a difficult legal battle where it’s like technically you don’t have a binding UCI Riders contract with them yet because it’s not August 1st but you do have a legal contract so in the end for both of them to avoid it going any further in practice you know they sort it out I think this is good I think why should you have to wait until August 1st to register your contract with the UCI now you should have to keep it secret let’s say until August after the tour to not embarrass other I think it’s very bad if you not very bad I think it’s not good if you allow other teams to announce the transfer to your team at the Twitter France team presentation that is not good the day before the Twitter France Farm they do that D Works yes wait SD Works announced they were transferring her from Sun no there was a leak or I’m not sure I don’t know who announced it I don’t know if it was as DW Works announcing it but it came out the day before the to France F right that sort of stuff should be prohibited because that is just not good for the sponsors of the incumbent team or existing team I’m saying but then again if it’s a league then it’s not this D works respons but but but but this is like now they will be able to but you should be able to Reg the contract officially with the UCI I don’t see why you shouldn’t because then you have then MOA or whoever then you’re in a much better position to say okay we can take a buyout still but maybe we don’t want one um maybe we just actually just want to keep this Rider and we don’t want to get and we shouldn’t have to get into some sort of legal stash we were there first we signed them and you yeah I I think it’s good to allow earlier now there was also another thing in related to that where I think it also said no longer well let me check wildband is checking the second thing I would like to see which is not in here is that the UCI calendar ends October 30th of 31st because yeah like if tol hook gets suspended he and and he he tested positive in his a sample in November I think that will count against Tre but he like for all intents and purposes wasn’t a trek Rider anymore he was going to a different team and was had left the team you know packed The Bu cup so I think for transfers and that stuff I think really the end of the calendar vs also said this I think and I agree that October 30th it’s the last UCI race of the year that’s when contract should end yeah okay by the way I haven’t found it so I’m just going to skip it but I think there’s one light point we can end this podcast on that there’s a new world to race coming next year which is uh the Copenhagen race a Danish world to race race I’ve been asking for it for 5 years in a row especially with Peterson being at the top in World Championships thingo showing up alen winning tour of flers to see that country with the bad fan base that it has to have a world tour race that’s excellent bad side of it it’s probably going to be flat in Copenhagen M Pon World Championships it is it it’s too flat purely flat and it’s isn’t it preparation of the tour FR in like the preparation period of the tour FR on Wednesday before national champs I think is that that basically another option next to Baza Belgium Tour for philipson to go to before the tour for example yeah this looks like a merli philipson cleanup uh particularly maybe if the if the Belgian Champs is too hard of a course so the I think it would be in this this Wednesday it like in the calendar is sort of where it would be be normally uh before the national champs I wish that was a World Tour race in Denmark instead in V or whatever it’s called V that that um hilly circuit in the tour of Denmark the one where Remco went off the road no the one where Remco nearly doubled everybody in one of the years oh yeah could have been the same race just a different stage probably is the same race actually there’s got to be some hills somewhere in Denmark is there a way they can construct some some sort of even a 300 M climb but vingard to win it to get him Danish vom yeah just c a rubbish pile about 300 me high and get vingard do it and there you go SK probably still win he’s better classic ster he classic strer um but T will certainly be at that race I don’t know if it’ll be given the sort of kid 11s treatment where you you don’t have to go I I dare say teams will not have to attend that even though it’s at World T level uh every World T race after 2017 is optional I think yeah I think so like Guang XI they don’t have to do yeah uh as in that started in 2017 sorry like TDU they do have to do but cadel they don’t have to do yeah um I think TDU should be optional I’m just [Laughter] kidding when did renui Bingo Bongo E3 start [ __ ] is it I I think it’s actually I think teams have to go I think that should be an optional race I should it should be a case by case and not depending on when it started sorry but Ando tour of benock it started a million hold on it started in the Netherlands back in when it first started in meelin melin meckelin is in Belgium my friend well PCS has a Dutch flag so suck [ __ ] it’s been colonized by PCS in [Laughter] 2005 maybe because it finished in uh I don’t know I think they’re just they just acting like they was some sort of civil unrest in 20 years ago all right that’s all from us this week we have uh an interview with you uh from join cycling as well as uh maybe maybe a little national championships recap depending on how good some of them are but we’ll see how we go they’re all on next weekend I don’t know if they’re the Saturday or the Sunday but the French ones normally very very good as well as the Belgian ones uh and now Luke is saying in the chat they also have a but I’m not allowing to say that yes they have a mein in in the Netherlands but our mein matters more cu the inour decided to start in mein finish in mein in Belgium then go to Hil in Belgium and then eventually go to the Netherlands because everybody knows you might as well start a race in Belgium because there’s more interest there well we’ll see territorial dispute may may keep running between Benji and Luke after the Pod finishes but thanks for listening as always hope enjoy the Pod we’ll see you later in the week ciao

    1. Elephant in the room: is Patrick going to keep saying « if Jonas isn’t in good form » he should obv know all there’s to know, now that he’s seen him in person in Tignes and prolly even seen his numbers and what not as well!
The credibility and bias of the pod is becoming questionable if you ask me!

    2. There is a world of difference between a world championship in the age group, despite being a WT level, compared to a Magnier a WT level who has riidden nearly as many days ifor the under 23 or national team, than for his WT team.

    3. The Danish WT race… FF S, man! Benji is sort of right — it should be in and around Kron-Jylland where it's at least a bit hilly.

    4. Good stuff from the UCI looking at banning radios. We need more riders going back to chat to their DS in the car who is drilling it at 80mph, cosplaying Verstappen by sending it up the inside of a rival teams car but with no-hands on the wheel and not looking at the road so they can pass on the crucial information of 'allez, don't give up! Keep pushing.'

    5. Honestly looked like Yates has the way higher Boni for Stage Win in his contract on that stage where they were holding hands, and they just decided to split 😉

    6. i really think the yellow card system should only be based around rider safety. If a rider or ds driving in the convey behave in a way that endangers a rider, thats when a yellow card should be given.
1st yellow card – warning, fine, possible relegation – 30 day probation period
2nd yellow card within probation period – immediate DQ from the current race, 7 day suspension – 60 day probation starting after suspension ends
3rd yellow card within probation period – immediate DQ from current race, 30 day suspension – another 60 day probation period.
so basically each time you get a card, you go into a probation period that gets increasing longer, and if you get another one during that period, the punishment is more severe. if you make it through the probation period after the any yellow card without getting another one then you go back to 0 and the next yellow card would be back to step 1.
finally if you get 6 yellow cards within a rolling 1 year period, then a 90 day suspension followed by a 90 day probation period where you would get another 90 day suspension if you get a yellow card. this last step would be to punish someone who gets a yellow card every 35 days theoretically and would not ever hit the 7 or 30 day suspension because their infractions are spaced out over a year but they keep getting them

    7. Tour de Suisse, most boring GC ever. Crossing fingers that that's not what we're going to get for the tdf, after the Giro we got (boring GC as well).

    8. Imho, VLB will be a shadow of the team they were last year. The recent below par performances of uijtdebroeks(maybe he wasn't rostered to ride the tdf) and Kuss, the injuries to van baarle, Vingegaard, WVA and Kruijswijk. Were it not for the brilliant recent performances of Jorgenson and kelderman, I would say the TDF is a battle between Bora and UAE.

    9. The Yellow Card system as proposed will likely do absolutely nothing to impact the safety of the sport. While there have been many instances of rider behavior being a huge factor in the safety of the race, there are more(?) instances where poor course design/routing is the culprit in making the sport more dangerous.

    10. Suisse and Tdf is not the same. Yeah good watts, but lets see.
About the 3km rule, why not change it for the good. In real sprintstages, the time for GC ist taken with 10 km to go, or 5 km to go. Rest is just for the stagewin. Why not? If you are afraid of timegaps by breakaways, they shouldn't matter in gc right?
And all that just for real sprintstages, completly flat. How to measure, that can be discused.

    11. Thibau Nys is incredibly talented but still very young. The concern in his camp is that they don't want to over race him. This already happened last year during the 2023 cylocross season when he started out winning the first two races in October in spectacular fashion. Then won the prestigious Koppenbergcross. But one month later at European Championships, he DNF'ed. Then for the rest of the season, he finished nowhere near the podium until Benidorm in late January. I think his father wants Thibau to have a long career… so he's very careful at this early stage.

    12. Ayuso and Pollit crashed hard in the Dauphine and Almeida and Yates are in to good shape already to keep this up for five more weeks… (Because yes the final week and heaviest week of the Tour is still more than a month away.)

Thus UAE's preparation has not been optimal…

Do they have three riders that can finish on a podium of a Grand Tour ? Yes, of course…. Will they finish 1, 2 and 3 in the Tour ? … No Vingegaard is much to strong for Pogacar, even if Vingegaard is only at 95%… Roglic 2nd and Pogacar 3rd.
