welcome to this special Euro edition of the football fill in England might have started with a win yesterday but it is not all pretty we’ve got plenty to talk about Mark goldbridge is not happy with Gareth Southgate Jude Bellingham you are the man and what was that celebration with Trent Alexander Arnold [Music] Lads let’s um let’s start at the back then CH we all right so I think what we’re going to do is we’re going to go through the spine of the team starting from the back moving our way forward see who could play who should play who played really well who didn’t play so great right talk about pitford what I’m going to come to you to start with yeah love him I think obviously is England’s uh first choice no doubt about it really comes alive I think in major tourament for England and that’s something we’ve missed a little bit to be honest I think if the goalie plays well in a major tournament gives us a platform to build and hopefully go deep into the tournament and have a chance of win it he was so animated yesterday didn’t you did you see his fals all the time anything happened because later on obviously we sat back and they kind of pressed a bit didn’t they they had a few half chances and this he was still on everybody I love that from him yesterday yeah I mean he’s he’s you know he’s not one of the best goalkeepers in the world but I think when you look at 2004 you know David James I I agree with wat I think he’s not a concern in that team you know I’d like ramsdale to be the keeper but he doesn’t not not now I think going into the season I would have loved ramsdale to be arsenal number one and take it but pford gets do you not think there’s a lot to be said though for for pford that the fact that every EUR every tournament we go to World Cup Euros he does a 7.5 out of 10 every single time yeah I think he’s the right choice I mean as I said I think there’s better goalkeepers in the tournament but we haven’t got a better goalkeeper than pford at the moment I’m double happy with Jordan pitford I really am I think he does a fantastic job right let’s talk about the defense then um let’s talk specifically about the B four from yesterday okay the first one I’m going to talk about gay did really well didn’t he yeah um I was talking about that before the game on the watch along along I did and a lot of people were sort of saying kza should play or whatever like that and I was like well look I remember I remember Terry I remember Rio Ferdinand 2002 um should have been in the Fifa World team of the of the tournament and they gave it to so Campbell but no one really was talking about him and then I think it’s so important to get a clean sheet because he is getting a bit of stick we haven’t got Harry M Harry Kane Harry McGuire and um I think that getting a he was probably better than stones in the actual game and hopefully he’ll go he’ll go into the tournament because Maguire is such a big loss so yeah I was really pleased with him and and it you know he is a weakness because of his inexperience but that will do in the world a good you know what a lot of people will take the mick out of Harry McGuire and there’ll be a bit but what Harry MaGuire offers us in offensive do you know when the balls are coming into the box yeah you know he is good for a goal or two at a major tournament isn’t he so good in the air and that’s the bit that I love gay I thought he did fantastic yesterday and I think him and Jon Stones actually worked really well together didn’t they mobile really mobile really calm really composed there were a couple headers later on as well what I weren’t there where I’m thinking yeah decent that read that really well I would impress you want to start with a clean sheet for the goalkeeping perspective but the back four when when everybody’s talking about that’s the real weakness the deficiencies in the team I think that’s where we’ll probably talk about who could have played in whatever position is it the right combination at send half but like mitovich is a hul he’s got a good goal scoring record and you thought would he be able to handle the the the physicality of him and obviously missing Maguire’s presence because obviously they were going to play long into him and they’re going to put crosses in the Box I thought he defended it really well and I think if that partnership can say fit healthy and grow every game yeah with pford him behind a mo we know he’s a 7 and a half out of 10 every match if they can become two seven and a halfs out of 10 we’ve got a real chance because you need them three to be at it every match because when we come up against better opposition and what you touched on more mobile opposition I think the two of them because the mobile in front I think will’ll probably be a little bit better than when Maguire’s there stones is the problem isn’t it if you know Maguire’s a big loss but it looks like we’ll be okay but Jon Stones is quite injury prone if we lose him I think that’s a massive Banner in the work isn’t it um Kyle Walker a million dollars he always is what he is there was a time yesterday actually in the game where Serbia had a little bit of of an overload on that side and Kyle Walker he’s got the lad trying to overlap him here Kyle Walker just went I’m just going to stay with the overlapper the lad with the ball carried on running it all got condensed and shut up but I’m just thinking that’s such good defending as well because the lad has got a full Sprint on him as well the overlapper had a full Sprint on him but kwalk can get up to pay so quickly caught up with him snuffed it all out is fantastic but on the other side Kieran trippier I think this is where we’re going to struggle until Luke Shaw is back fit because he is not really the most mobile up and down helping Phil foden out on that side is he no no um Luke Shaw was on the bench obviously didn’t bring him on you’d hope that southgate’s just like you know just there yeah few more days but it’s a big ask I mean Luke Shaw’s not played for Man United since January um and there’s no can he get back up to Pace that quick just you reckon I don’t think you can I mean we’ve seen Beckham haven’t we with his metat tarel Rooney you’re not match bit what’s he looking like do you know what I mean because I think if you can see him in training and you can see what he looks like because I I I’ve seen a few different versions of Luke Shaw and I’ve seen a ready a hungry Luke Shaw and you can just tell that he’s going to be good to go and I want to see him in training to have a little glimpse of what he looks like the problem with Luke Shaw is he came back from a long injury in January played against I think it was wolves or and went off at half time came back luten went off at half time he’s just so injury-prone and and and he does come back quite ready he’s not one of those players that like takes a bit of time but his game is so stamina driven up and down a bit like Kyle Walker that I just worry that we really do need him for the balance but I I think it’s a big ask that he’s going to come back and be ready to go I reckon the winning that first game last night was massive because it gives us a chance now to rest him again for the Danish game do you know what I mean we don’t have to go full force against Denmark do we I think the importance of winning that first game because you know if you win that second game you you you still want to win the group for the passage the the the so-called easier route for sure but if you can win them first two games it actually gives the management a chance to say right who’s who’s in a little bit of trouble who can we look after but maybe you can put Luke Shaw on for 45 minutes the next game because you’ve got some scope and that might be enough and then he might be ready for the uhar draw him by the way they were absolutely heartbroken did you see them him at the full time they were absolutely that’s a massive blow for them you know the importance mate you know what I mean if you get off to that win you win the second game you you’re done through and I think it if you think it’s a seven game tournament you can make it a six game tournament for your Superstars yeah so you’ve got to have more in the tank when you go deeper into the tournament and I think that’s the importance of it I REM remember my two uh Euros as a coach Drew both first games so even though you win your second game it’s not done on Four Points because you want to so the last game you can’t make the changes whereas if you can win the first two you can say look we’re done depend on the result this I don’t again this is a thing I’m not fully sure about either though because there’s some people that would say right if you win your first two games let’s win the third one we still put our strongest team out we go out and we absolutely Blitz them right but then there’s other people that say no rest your stars rest them for the for the first knockout stage game what is the best thing to do in this scenario do you know what I mean do you do you play a full strength team so that when the first knockout game comes everybody’s still firing or do you give them a little rest well I I think the problem we saw yesterday with the game against Serbia is that Southgate is a crap coach in the sense that he tactically isn’t very switched on when it comes to substitutions because you can make so many Subs can’t you I don’t know whether we know I I think you can I think you can sub more than five on I don’t know what what the rule is no surely not it would be it would be isn’t it like what the Premier League would do I don’t know I don’t know but you’ve got a full bench you got I think you’ve got more scope on the bench but I think it’s the UFA rule will be still five yeah you’ve got a bigger pull to pick from so what what he should be doing really is because it’s a longer tournament like w says like Harry Kane should have come off for the last 20 minutes because Serbia were playing high and Ole Watkins so I wouldn’t complet you could change in the third game your whole team because there’s good players isn’t there like Gordon and Palmer but personally I think he should be making more subs what yesterday then what what Subs would you have made at what point as well yesterday because first half I think everybody we got in at half time apart from the last probably 15 10 minutes of the first half right I kept thinking we’re just sitting back back a little but it’s fine because we’ve been on fire for the first 30 minutes it’s fine what would would would you have kept it the same then or at what point would you have made some decisions I think I mean I heard St Pierce was apparently saying take voting off after 25 minutes that’s nonsense really you know get to halftime and what what what happened in that game is the first 15 minutes we had like 88% possession we scor a goal was incredible and and then what we do is what we do in against Croatia in the semi-final of the of the World Cup and what we did in the final against Italy we get that goal in Southgate and ten AR said it on Dutch TV he said that’s down to the manager he scores the goal does the hard work and then wants to play this risky game of moments to get the second goal whereas actually you should just go and win the game like everyone else like what the Spanish did or what the German did they did 100% we’re used to this it’s not a guess we’re not guess work here this is like what everybody does so half time I’d have given it five minutes you’d see the same things happening I’d have pulled Bellingham back next to Rice I’d have put foden in I’d have took Trent off I’d have brought Gordon on the left hand side um that would have been the first change and then if it’s still not changing I think Serbia are pushing forward Harry kton doesn’t look fit to me off he comes for Watkins or Tony who are both very good at being up front on their own with the spin and turn to make that Serbian defense a bit scared and I think those two changes would have would have given us more control of the Midfield because Bellingham was like bullying Serbia so put him in next to Rice who didn’t really need it who was my man of the match anyway but as we know South Gate’s just too much about his card club and who his favorites are and and and he made the changes too late and I thought the changes were wrong as well Gallagher for Trent was very obvious boen for sacka was very obvious they didn’t change the way we play did it it was was it like what when you get in at half time of a game like that where you’ve been so dominant but you can see that they’ve just fell off for the last five or 10 minutes of the first half at what point do you say there at half time if you’re the manager or the coach is Right Lads no get back on the front foot again we start this second half exactly the same as what we started the first half there’s no excuses for it we don’t play this like just sit back and take our time and just try and Nick something surely you would say right lad these serbians aren’t great you know these aren’t fantastic we go for the throat here yeah you should do but like I were a little bit disappointed in Serbia at the start of the game if I’m honest it were like watching uh the the top four in the Premier League against the bottom three they just sat so deep and yes we got 88% possession because we were up against nothing every time they cleared it in their own box it were a boot forward they weren’t playing into mic’s strength at that point they were 30 yards from the goal we grew into theame game nicely because we had possession there were never any danger every time they kicked it clear we were in total control but as they GRE into the game and we’ve not got that second goal then you know at halime that they’re not going to play that same way we’re in there we’re winning one nil at half time as a manager I would or a coach i’ have been saying look Lads we know we’ve got to step up that last five or 10 minutes we’ve actually given them a momentum but what we’ve got to do is we’ve got to see how they start that half because they are not going to sit in that low deep block they now first game of the tournament they’re going to change and I think that’s then where you you’re thinking as a coach or as part of the management team if they do change which they should change they’ve got to get something out of the game then how do we make aggressive Subs not like for like aggressive Subs that as the game opens up our better players are in better positions and we can hurt them because there’ll be more space it has to be like that though as it’s aggressive isn’t it like you say just just you know political you know what you can’t look one nil win right there’s no such thing as a comfortable one nil win there is not you don’t win that game you don’t win that game against France Portugal they get goal the final but it’s like I were talking about my experiences in the tournament I can’t remember whether it will we were one nil up or it were nil nil at halftime against Russia the last tournament I did but we were so much better we got the goal but they scored an equalizer an injury time because it were one nil and when it’s if Serbia would have nicked that it takes a set look aten’s goal you know Casp Michaels right behind it deflects off the ass what can I do that’s all it takes simp that’s why one nil is Never Enough and then you go back to Spain Germany it’s Relentless aggressive football he’s going to win you this tournament I’ve got what I think could be or should be the perfect team for the next game all right so um I think Trent did okay yesterday not fantastic didn’t rip up any trees did he really um I think Bellingham can play in the E position alongside Dean rice and I think we can put um Cole Palmer in that number 10 position and I think if you are playing even if you’re playing against one of the best teams if you’re playing one against one of the big boys they would look at that starting lineup and go [ __ ] that is incredible we are going to have to be on our game today not only are we going to have to be defensively sound but when we attack we’re going to have to really think about this here what you reckon I think the big problem we’ve got is I would like to see Phil foden come in as the number 10 because I who would you play on the left I I I don’t I don’t know what you two think you’ve played the game but I I look at it and I go look I remember with with schen where he put skulls on the left and I was like I would rather you dropped skulls and Lampard yeah and put Nikki b or Carrick next to Gerard and put your two decent players on the bench because balance like have a put someone on the left wing you can’t you can’t be in a major tournament and have a right back at Center Midfield a right back at left back and a number 10 on the left Wing this is elite football and the reason Pep Guardiola doesn’t do that and people will say well vel’s a center but I but you know what I mean you put you put round round pegs into round HS and we’re putting Square pegs in round HS when you’ve got no you know you’ve you’ve been the goalkeeping coach at England you don’t have long yeah you’re asking Trent you know when he receives that ball with his back to him and it bounces off him talking about mic he’s not used to receiving that ball and if you’re Connor Gallagher or you’re Kobe Maya or you’re won you’ve done that for the last five years of your life and it’s and it’s second this is why I think like and JW Bellingham I I still think if you play him in there at that as that eight he can still do everything he does and he still will do as well he’ll get forward but he’ll also get back when you got a de I agree with you I think Dean rice was man of the match yesterday I loved him I thought he’s fantastic a couple of times he Ms it up you’re mopping it up reads it see how how like clever and switched on he is a couple of times gay he stepped in as well and he was like I’ll just sit in this space here then and chill and wait for it if you then want to play Bellingham at the side of him you know that he’s going to do that and He he’ll sit there I mean Bellingham playing at 10 yesterday he were actually taking the ball off the two Center halfs anyway if you’d R his uh belt on or monitor heat the distance is covered I want to see his heat map I bet you it would go it would go constantly between edge of our box to the edge of their box Bo he can do that and I’m a bit like you look I think fen’s probably uh played for City on the side but he’s good at 10 but if you want to play him at 10 get Palmer or Gordon on the wing and and play them and we talk about right I mean Gordon for sure but Palmer for Chelsea Pal’s an animal yeah but there’s no fear with these guys to be aggressive yeah that’s what we want we’ve got to play we know for it and look the manager makes a choice and did Trent do okay yes he did okay and it’s an easy one for us to talk about and be critical but we’ve got better Midfield players in there and playing Serbia and no disrespect to Denmark next time and then Slovenia but if you think about now what the manager should be looking at Denmark bestard left side Center half what what does he want he wants to play against Kane D yeah what he doesn’t want is to play against Tony or wat don’t want anybody behind them and they can’t sit back for a draw and hope that they’re going to then win the last game Denmark you know what I mean and if it’s an open game and there’s more space you got to think about where we’re going to get as wins you look at the the International Football I mean I think about driving over we if we don’t win the Euros it’s because of Southgate it’s because we haven’t got a good coach you watch Italy against Albania spalet who won the league with Napoli I mean he’s over qualified for international football and you look at that team and after 20 minutes I was like this this don’t look right to me and he’s got he’s got his right back his center backs his left back and then he’s got jinho holding like we’ve got rice he’s got Burell scores a goal as the eight and then he’s got Pelini as the 10 then he’s got skaka as the nine kazer on the right and it should be fessi on the left but he’s on the right and Demarco is doing the left back and the the left wing rle and then the left side of Center back sort of moving across and it’s like that’s really clever to be doing that in international football and they got they a’t got the squad we’ve got and you look at what we’ve got and you’re going we’ve got bloody Trent Alexander Arnold is a bloody midfielder and we’ve got Phil foden playing on the left and it’s like what happened to skols you know the Press are now going for foden and they went for skulls in 2004 dropped skulls playing on the bloody left wing he’s not a left Winger it’s you know put him in his best position or don’t put him in the team those those those really good players like they don’t like Phil Fen a a left Winger like Cole Palmer a natural number 10 he they all switch and move and move so I think with it has to be a case of like free license with them guys sometimes as well is go right you lot know where to be when the ball is there and when the ball is there so we just rotate around it all right play like Bellingham did he if he’s getting the balls off our Center show that fluidity in the team but the big problem for me is he’s got decisions to make whether he keeps playing Trent for sure but unless Shaw can give us some balance down that side that’s the biggest are we can’t do anything about that you can’t about Southgate we’ve got no left about we got balance the opposition coaches managers tactically we we be going to one trick pony because we know we’re not going to have that outlet down that left side so at least play a left Winger Anthony Gordon has been the most you know I don’t want to call him steady Eddie but what a season for Newcastle goals assist I’m a left Winger I haven’t got a left back a left back so let’s put Phil ferden on the left wing no put a bloody left Winger there why can’t we if we get the result against Denmark play Anthony Gordon at left back for 45 minutes and Luke Shaw there for 45 minutes just do something to say look the opposition are going to be guessing here because that would be brave wouldn’t it I wouldn’t mind what you said about Palmer as 10 though just I know it’s not nice but uh Serbia had yich on the bench because they’ve got mraic and blavic like put Phil foden and Trent on the bench wow you know it’s not it’s not that hard is it but it’s like it’s like what Shen used to do I’ve got to get all my good players into an 11 and and and and then you’re in balanced and then you’re like then your tactics look rubbish I think as well though you have to play the players who are going to give you that aggression right so Jude Bellingham if if we had if we had four or five Jud Bellingham who would have that aggression and that nouse about it and they’re really in people’s faces Kyle Walker does it kieren trippier does it I bet you Anthony Gordon would do it as well you see you see you see Anthony Gordon when he plays for Newcastle you see how like RI he gets when he does that last block or gets that cross in and he’s raring the crowd up and stuff like that those little things they go unnoticed I promise but they are so important as well well Southgate also if we’re being completely honest I wouldn’t give him a job to any club in the Premier League and Leicester haven’t got a manager and I still wouldn’t give it Southgate but Anthony Gordon Jude Bellingham trippier Walker rice they’re Southgate players you know they’re not they’re just players that you say go out and do a job you don’t know what greish isn’t there because he’s got an opportunity not to take greish because he doesn’t know what to do with greish and he doesn’t know what to do with foden really so I don’t know why he’s picking foden you either play foden as a 10 put him on the bench but he’s scared isn’t he he’s like he’s scared of taking aric Kane off because aric Kane might tell him off yeah but do you know what right we’ll talk about Kane in a minute and that but I I think sometimes it’s it’s almost like we’ve got an embarrassment of riches yeah and well would you pick fed I I would pick him I would where would where would we pick foden yeah number 10 for me yeah of course you for me the thing is as well though I think we’ve got so many of them good players right and I I think sometimes he is it’s like he can’t do right for doing wrong either g s because can if he drops him we’ all put at 10 and he won’t so don’t drop him but if we play fing at 10 and then in the next game he didn’t do too great or it’ be like why did you put him there he should be playing over there and I think sometimes it’s like you’re making a rod for your own back it must be an our job you know because you he makes it harder I think no I just he makes it very hard I think it’s an impossible you know is the conversations but this is what makes football great Premier leag the Euros the World Cups the first 20 minutes yesterday right I’m watching this first 20 minutes and I was thinking oh my God we are it is coming home Lads like we’re winning everything this is their facing the passing the movement Trend this that everybody I like that but I was really disappointed with Serbia because I thought it were the first game that they they weren’t two teams trying to win and all the England stuff were really good but when it came to a proper game in the second half mental surely that’s just mentality you know what you know what like Southgate is you go around his house for a three course meal first you know the starter is absolutely the best prawn cocktail you’ve ever had and you think this is going to be a great meal and then he Wheels out cold beans on toes for the mains and you don’t even get a bloody ping it’s like that’s the problem with Southgate he he he lurs you in and go you go oh my god well one nil up against Italy at Wembley in the Euros it’s coming home and then he goes one nil Lads let’s let’s switch up and then and then you can’t you’d know you can’t switch back on again can you that momentum shift that’s the problem in sport and top level sport when that momentum shift’s gone you can be the he could be the best manager England have ever had or the greatest manager in World football but when that momentum’s gone and you’ve allowed it to go when he’s on the sideline he can do nothing and that’s the word that’s the word from wat isn’t it you know you know momentum’s going to shift in football you know no matter what Germany knew Scotland at some point would have an attack and Switzerland were brilliant in that first half against Hungary and Hungary were brilliant second off but they’ve got the two goal cushion haven’t they but Southgate we score one goal the momentum will naturally shift but he lets it switch and and you can’t you’ve got to push home get you got to put your foot down on their throat and you’ve got to twist it and turn won do it he takes the foot off what did you everybody watched the Germany game against Scotland didn’t they there was not even a question of a doubt that Germany were just going to keep they have done them 9-0 if they could it could have been 9-0 as well genuinely it could they got three up at half time then H and I’ll guarantee you they’ve gone in the AR time go LZ we’re just going to have to chill a little bit here yeah don’t kill yourself don’t run your legs ragged don’t get any injuries or red cards all right and just chill ended up five it could have been nine and that’s the problem with Southgate isn’t it it’s like the Germans you look at some of the failures we’ve had like losing that final you know the the semi-final the quarterfinal against France we would we all go oh so close and the Germans would go get rid of this guy yeah this ain’t what we want and and and you know it’s that mentality shift every R’s frustrated and there are people going what you moaning about we won but the frustration is that we should have we should have gone and won that game 3-0 we should be talking this morning going oh my God and actually we’ve let Serbia back in what do we think of Baya Sak’s performance first half phenomenal second half just kind of faded a little bit ended up being taken off of jarab Bowen but we’re happy with Bak on the I I think he’s massively we we speak about it every week don’t we when we do the normal season I I I don’t get it with zaka it’s almost like there’s a movement to try and dismiss or call him a flop he’s he’s off the pitch his mentality is fantastic on the pitch honestly that that that poor left back I was thinking you’re going to have to get you’re going to have to get brought off he did really well in the second half in F but in the I was thinking you’re going to have to come off here mate this is it ain’t going well for you I think it suits him in a way though because it’s all about Bellingham it’s all about Kane it’s all about thoden and we’ve got probably one of the best who who doesn’t T start for in this tournament on the right side but this is this is again though we’re talk when you talk about balance when you’ve got a Kyle Walker behind you you see some of the overlaps Kyle Walker did yesterday should have scored should he knows he’s got that that it’s a massive safety net a massive he knows he can get forward and he knows if they break on us Kyle Walker’s going to be coming back and covering everything it does help out so much doesn’t it yeah but that’s where you talk much quality in the Midfield that’s our strength a guy who’s just there to get him behind and run the channels whereas Kane wants to be involved in it as well go back to it now Denmark’s the next game we know they a big physical this has to be an open game they’ve not got the legs this has to be an open game though doesn’t it them drawing means that they have to go for it they have to it’s as
