    [Music] the question to BMW back in 2014 was how many turbos do you really need in your diesel X5 and you know what their answer was it was yes oh yes this is the try yes try turbo BMW X5 m50d and it’s nuts really nuts let’s drive it then shall we my name is Tom and you are watching Paragon cars let’s go [Music] [Music] [Music] I really do wonder where BMW was going with this back in 2014 like can you imagine the engineering team explaining why they needed yet another turbo in an already very powerful engine anyway this m50d puts out 381 horsepower and a monstrous 740 newm of torque to all four wheels via its very rear drive bias X drive system shall we see what it can do on the 30 to 70 Sprint then yeah [Music] let’s now then we managed 5.47 seconds which I have to say threw me just a tad I thought this would have been just a bit quicker than that however when you watch the footage back you realize that this car is geared for fast German Auto bars and not 30 to 70 times this thing had to shift through three gears just to go from 30 to 70 mph and yeah it also weighs 2.2 tons rest assured though this thing is far quicker than the numbers would suggest anyway inside it’s what I’d call an aging but certainly not outdated interior in fact one thing I really like in this interior is the wireless charger that actually holds your phone in place so many manufacturers whack a wireless charger in their car that just doesn’t hold your phone properly so the second you touch the brake or throttle your phone goes into low earth orbit other notable features in this X5 are the optional highly adjustable seats I’ll explain later why those are very much worth the money also the extended storage pack that gives you a little cup next to the driver’s seat very useful for um things then there’s also some very nice cup holders that hold your drinking place well and a pretty decent Harmon Cardon sound system definitely worth getting that system by the way as the stock sound system is a bit rubbish in my opinion moving to the back you get some adjustable rear seats that have a pretty decent amount of room and an armrest with very nice cup holders and some extra storage unfortunately this is where it all goes a bit downhill for me though as well as there’s an easy access function for getting into the thir third row unless you plan on chopping your legs off you’re not really going to fit back there then it gets even worse as if you want to fault the rear seats down you better make sure every other seat is as far forward as possible otherwise they will get stuck on the way down so not ideal but anyway once you’ve completed your car Jenga then you’re left with a very large and pretty flat load floor that can take pretty much anything you can throw at it you know we’re talking washing machines maybe even a fridge then you even get a 12vt socket and split fold tailgate so you can plug in a mini fridge and sit in the back if that’s your kind of thing anyway let’s get on to what we’re all here for they’re driving that’s right folks we are in the ultimate sleeper BMW X5 I have been waiting a very long time to get behind the wheel one of these and I’m so glad I finally am because I want to see if it’s really worth spending the extra do to get the m50d over the 40D now now we already know it’s quicker but what’s it like to drive is it really any better well driving around town in Comfort mode there is just talk everywhere it feels almost like an electric car from 1,000 RPM all the way to 5,000 RPM you have huge amounts of grunt nobody’s going to let me go wish shall say thank you to Mr vanman but steering around town is lovely and light suspension nice and soft in Comfort mode of course this car has adaptive dampers so they stiffen up when you are in sports and Sports Plus and we will be exploring that setting momentarily but first we’re going to have a bit of an amble and then a little bit of a drive on the mway to see what kind of MPG we can manage talking about MPG this thing is claimed to do four 2 MP gallon on the combined cycle now this was before wltp basically enforced their rules to say you have to be honest so it’s going to be interesting to see what this actually does but we shall find out and reset our trip computer now but driving this thing around town honestly an absolute Joy this car even has the full I think they’re 21 adjustable seats which means you can adjust not only the pitch of the base you got you know an extra thigh support and whatnot but you can actually adjust the upper part of the back rest so if you’re a bit hunched over um like I am then this car is uh really really comfortable it’s just the steering though is really nice and light not a whole lot of fuel but it’s a big SUV at the end of the day do you need a huge amount of feel you just want it to work right of course as usual before we get on the motorway though we do have to have just a little taste of the handling first so let’s take it to our favorite roundabout or actually my second favorite roundabout and see what’s what right let’s go for Sports Plus this will sharpen up the steering sharpen up the throttle response and it will drop a couple of Gears if I push the gear selector over into s it will drop another gear and make the gear shifts even sharper it will also turn the traction control off but leave stability on going to be a little bit sensor oh there is something very very satisfying about moving a lot of weight sideways oh yes and power wow Cy power is everywhere this thing is a monster on Wheels wow that is addictive I mean even for 2,000 revs just beastly of course zf8 speed gearbox being tuned absolutely perfectly by BMW here just gets the job done one thing I am noticing new is that our miles per gallon is sitting at 20 and I’ve literally just tapped the throttle once hopefully that goes back up again anyway I suppose that means we should go into eco mode because this is a diesel at the end of the day it’s still supposed to give us a lot of MPG when we need it it’s got to do The Best of Both [Music] Worlds look at him naughty that’s a leftand turn lane only is this Volvo going to do the same thing I think he is oh dear the lack of respect from drivers in the UK especially around London shocking absolutely shocking guarantee he’s going to get on the M1 and he’s going to sit in the Middle Lane for about 5 hours now which means I’m going to drive like a Londoner and use my power to overtake him oh yes even in Eco this thing is very very fast and the thing is in Eco BMW actually dampen the throttle response but you’ve got so much talk that just a little tap of the throttle need just absolutely take off this thing’s like a Boeing 747 absolute missile but yeah once you’re on the motorway cruise control on and it just you know goes back to being a regular family hauler very comfortable very quiet not quite as quiet as the new BMW X5 but it’s still like a luxury vehicle like you’re not going to complain about it the only thing I absolutely hate in this generation of BMWs is these indicators they don’t stay down when you press them I don’t know why they thought that was a good idea but it’s like it just doesn’t feel nice to use and I find a lot of the time you know you press it you get in a corner and it’s still on and you’re just like it’s just not nice what is nice is all that luscious talk though just a beast one thing I’ve noticed is that our range is dropping quicker than I thought it would I may have to stop to fill up with diesel however saying that it is predicted range not actual range so once we get on the motorway hopefully that goes above 100 miles again let’s get it into this corner and see what the chassis is like so someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe we have regular coil springs up front and air suspension at the rear now for some reason when I look online everyone says something different I don’t know why some people say oh it’s just regular core springs on the m50d some say it’s air suspension some say it’s adapted just you can never find a correct answer even when you ask BMW themselves I ask them and they go oh yeah it’s air suspension all around and I was like pretty sure it’s not oh well someone with more technical knowledge probably knows I’m just here to do a bit of fun driving and test what it’s like in the real world I suppose right let’s get ourselves onto the M25 hopefully it’s clear day so we can get a nice accurate result see what kind of MPG we can [Music] manage all righty then we managed 34.2 MPG so in reality on a very long mway journey you could probably expect see about 35 to 38 maybe even 40 m per gallon if you’re driving pretty slowly but if you’re driving at 70 it’s going to be like 36 to 38 MPG which when you consider the performance that this thing offers that is a damn good figure there are well there’s no petrol cars really that offer this kind of performance with this much interior space that can do that MPG figure pretty damn extraordinary how extraordinary is it though when we take it to a B- Road let’s go to one now and find out so Sports Plus gearbox into sports as well I’m going to go for manual because zf8 spe gearbox is nice now I know a diesel you typically wouldn’t go for manual kind of ride the wave of torque but this engine does REV out nicely As I Shall now demonstrate that low down grunt is mental front end holds on for a while all the way to 5,000 and look at that blisteringly fast this thing just revs so well I mean it revs like a petrol engine it’s absolutely nuts test the brakes yeah they work it’s typical BMW stuff though really they have this like pretty disconcerting feel to them I’m not super duper happy about now interestingly this says that it’s low on fuel but for some reason from 2013 to 2017 BMW had this weird like highly predictive fuel thing where it says you have less fuel than you actually have I don’t know why they do that anyway coming around a corner ride the wave of talk oh yes and in one gear you can go from basically n to 70 and that’s what you want in a big old diesel isn’t it even in like six gear let’s slow down to 50 m hour under 2,000 RPM plant your foot 2,700 RPM is where that big old turbo comes in but you’ve still got loads of low down torque it just means as I’ve said you got power everywhere it’s a brilliant engine really [Music] is you can feel the rear end squiring around doesn’t necessarily break loose but it just has this rear drive bias that feels absolutely wonderful right let’s go from sixth gear or fifth gear actually so we can see the big turbo coming in and now it’s coming and who you feel the power or should I say torque you really feel it come in honestly now if you look at a power chart of this car there is a little dip in power at 2500 rpm and that’s where that big turbo is spooling up but can you feel it no anyone that says they can is lying really the only thing you can feel is that big turbo coming in that’s what you can feel in terms of handling suspension stiffish not too bad coming around corners like this you can kind of like wiggle it around a bit it handles amazingly well for a big SUV I mean it just it masks its weight completely in all honesty oh genuinely you could take this thing to a track it would probably do all right I would love to get one of these on the auto bar this is where this car would absolutely [Music] shine I just love how understated it is as well you know you get little accents like the Silver Wing mirror caps little fender blades but that’s it basically that’s all you get apologies if you hear any noise in the back I mean look at how this thing revs out crazy it just keeps going absolutely nuts lovely sharp gear changes as well just so smooth I mean that’s what you want with an engine like this you just want Power everywhere and for it to just be buttery smooth oh yeah grunt it has I mean to me it’s like a 40D but it just keeps revving where the 40D runs out of puff after like 4,000 this just keeps going keeps going and going and going and going and the thing is the 40D engine is still really good so you know it’s only the 30d where you do notice the lack of power up top really the 40D still has plenty of punch up top at the end of the day that’s the same engine that’s in the 335d that’s already a monstrous unit but this is it’s a whole different from gravy speed you really don’t need more power than that I mean if anything you can have a little bit less the fun is over very quickly in this thing and it’s the in Gear Performance where this really shines so with like a petrol car you kind of have to downshift a couple of gears and rev it out and yes it might be faster but with a diesel car you’re not waiting on the power to come in it’s just there it’s instant like you just go fantastic stuff oh wow what a freaking machine a yes it is a special thing indeed let’s see how special it is now down a little pot old British B- right there cuz that is where some vs at least can struggle but um I have high hopes for this thing because it has a that badge what on Earth was that uh yeah respect all builds maybe not that one anyway let’s get to uh a little b-o shall we okay we’re going to go for third gear I think low in the Rev range but when you put your foot down she takes off oh my goodness it’s just you don’t expect that like extra layer of power yeah third gear all the way up to 60 easily have a nice big bumps Chuck it in yeah it’s still a beamer handles so well and Corners like this as well whack it in third toss it in certainly wouldn’t do that in a Defender [Music] so quick okay can we hit 60 before the junction or before the corner rather oh that was my fault did actually rev it out there still easily hit 60 though woohoo oh that throttle response above 3,000 RPM absolutely mental it’s saying I’m running out of diesel but in reality I’m actually not I don’t know why it does that but cornering in this thing I mean it’s so good it really is so good the weird thing is for me it still feels like a SUV whereas like an Audi Q7 really doesn’t but it just hides its mass so well like you still have this commanding driving position position who can’t even Tor this thing so [Music] fast my lord it’s like actually comical what were the engineers thinking ah yes I think one more this so ridiculous it is rare that an SUV makes me giggle like this I mean what a monster so is it worth spending the extra Doh it is quite a bit of money even on the used Market to get the m50d over the 40D or even 30d I suppose it kind of depends on how much money you have for me personally I just wouldn’t because it’s just like it’s a lot more money but if you’ve got the Mula if you’ve got the cheddar then I absolutely would because the way this thing drives is just like nothing else honestly there is nothing else that drives like this you know even something like the Audi sq7 it doesn’t have power all the way through the Rev band well certainly not like this you know I mean the only other car that would compare to it I suppose is the newer m50d which I would love to have a go in so sales team if you’re watching please go and buy one of those and I can have a go in it but honestly you know it’s got that diesel personality where you’ve got torque low down and then it drives like a elal car up top which makes it so much fun and that’s the thing that really differentiates it from the rest of the diesel engines that are in this lineup is you can really push it you know drive it at 10/10 and it feels nice you know it doesn’t run out of puff at all you can drive it all the way to the red line and it yeah just awesome it’s it’s made me regurgitate a small amount     2. Love your videos but you're just too sensible 😉 lol. Feel free to blur the speedos and give the cars a bit of leg room! Try some new roads too. The usual circuit is getting boring. I'll still watch your videos however!

    3. With my 330d I actually used manual mode for the opposite reason as normal, to get it to hold onto a gear rather than kicking down
