The Olympics is comming this Summer to Paris– the dates are July 24th to August 11th. Here is the next installment to get us excited about the city that is loved by millions as the destination for travel. What is the Arc De Triomphe? It was built from 1806 to 1836– it took 30 years to build! Construction began on August 15th which is Napoleon’s birthday. Napoleon commissioned the Arch to be built in 1806 after the Battle of Austerlitz (1805) to celebrate the military achievements of the French Armies. Francois Mitterand celebrtated victory in 1944 by walking thru the arch. The Allied armies did the same. The Tour de France bicycle race ends near it every year and the annual military parade marking July 14th- known as French National Day and Bastille Day– begins it journey at the arch.
