During this cycling trip, I wanted to discover one of these big rivers of the South-West: The Tarn This river meanders through 5 departments, in the middle of landscapes marked by its passage. From the source at Mont-Lozère to the confluence with the Garonne, I suggest you discover this river by bike. A 6 day trip, 520km, on roads and paths Let’s go! Let’s go discover the Tarn together, my way! As the kilometers increase, The Tarn widens again and again. The Gorges du Tarn are behind me, and here I enter the Tarn Valley. The rocky, very mineral side of the Gorges gives way here to much denser vegetation, with forests. After passing through the Pinet dam, it is time for me to make my traditional mid-day stop. That’s it, it’s lunch break. For this, nothing better than finding a picnic table, on the banks of the Tarn, of course! I even have games for children if I want to have fun. It’s perfect! What does a bicycle traveler eat? It eats what it finds, we won’t be picky! Here in this case, I stopped at St Rome de Tarn. It was the only grocery store open on my way. I bought a baguette at the bakery, some madeleines, a banana… and the manager gave me slices of ham… expired 2 days ago. It’s not that serious ! It’s OK for me ! What do you want more ? It is not well ? Yes, yes, we are very good indeed. But it’s time to move on. Here is a succession of hydroelectric dams, which began with the Pinet dam. Which implies that the Tarn is really changing. It is no longer a river with current at all. These water retentions cause the river bed to widen. On the road, I like, among other things, to contemplate old buildings, whose style, architecture, and materials I see evolving throughout the journey. I now arrive at Brousse le Chateau. Sitting on a rock, the castle dominates the Tarn Valley, between Millau and Albi. How good it is to cycle in the fresh air in the morning! It’s 6:50 AM. It’s really great. I’m already in a t-shirt, the air is fresh. It’s the perfect time to cycle. there is still no noise, no one on the road. It’s really ideal. There in a few kilometers, I arrive at Ambialet. Ambialet is a peninsula nestled in a meander of the Tarn, and dominated by an old priory. Here is the narrowest isthmus in Europe, take a look. From there, I head towards Albi. And to get there, I take the tunnel route. It is a former railway line that has become a departmental road, with a succession of several tunnels, sometimes not very wide. 1 kilometer tunnel! 1 kilometer sprint! Here I am in the red city: Albi. Yes, yes, we can say it: it is the most beautiful city in the world! In Albi you can discover, among other things, the Palace of Berbie and its magnificent gardens. or relax in the shelter of the St Salvy cloister, or visit the imposing fortified cathedral. And why not also browse the stalls of the Saturday morning market, with the good local products! Albi, the most beautiful city in the world, we agree! But on the other hand this is where I catch the rain… I hope it won’t last. Bye Bye Albi. As we leave the Tarn prefecture, the weather does not change in a good way. A few showers here and there. And even from the top of my haystack, the sky does not look well… The more I advance, the more I head towards bad weather. I pass through Gaillac without stopping there. and I postpone the moment again and again to stop and put on raincoat. You know what: I’m going to stop and put on the raincoat, because it’s starting to fall well! There’s is true rule, it’s always like this: you put on the raincoat too early, no rain at all. If you don’t wear it, you’ll be soaked to the skin. I’m in Lisle-sur-Tarn and the least we can say is that here, it’s raining cats and dogs. After a huge storm, and a lot of rain, after a crappy passage on an impassable path, I finally found the road. And then the sun has just come out, all the humidity is coming up from the road. It’s suffocating! I will soon arrive in Rabastens. Heading to the campsite…hopefully I’ll have dried off by then. At the campsite, we all have our own little daily routine. Set up, set up the tent, inflate the mattress… Unroll the sleeping bag, go shower or do laundry, and above all, take time to rest. After which a small meal will do the greatest good, while waiting to go to bed, until the next day… When I step outside, after a peaceful night, I am just like the region: totally in the fog. A morning mist envelopes the valley, while the sun’s rays try to pierce it. I am now leaving the Tarn: the department, not the river (you understood!) I am briefly passing through Haute Garonne. In Buzet-sur-Tarn, the river continues to grow. Toulouse-style architecture is present everywhere here, mixing bricks and pebbles. I drive a few kilometers on a greenway. after Bessières. I enter Tarn-et-Garonne, arriving shortly after in Montauban. You don’t go to Montauban without taking the pulse of Place Nationale. This square, surrounded by double arcades, is very lively with many restaurants. Even if Lino Ventura said in one of his films "We should never leave Montauban", I am obliged to do so. On the way out of town, I come across an old acquaintance: Aveyron. And yes, this is where it flows into the Tarn. Did you know that Tarn-et-Garonne is the leading apple producer in France? With more than 5,300 hectares devoted to its production, the apple has become the emblem of the department. It’s a bit like 50 Shades of Apples around here! I will now cross this river Tarn, one last time. And for this I borrow an impressive structure: the Moissac canal bridge. It crosses the Tarn, thus allowing boats navigating on the side canal of the Garonne to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Moissac is of course an essential stop on the Camino de Santiago. Highlight of Romanesque art in France, the Abbey Church of St Pierre and its cloister are even classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. Just a few more pedal strokes along the canal, and I’m there. I arrive at the confluence of the Tarn and the Garonne. Do you remember this little stream? I went to find its source in Mont-Lozère. I saw it grow little by little, to finally see it flow into the Garonne here. I will have only traveled 500km on this trip from the Cévennes. passing through the Gorges du Tarn, then the Tarn Valley. I saw a lot of beauty, and I really enjoyed the bike ride. And I was thus able to discover and know this river a little better.

    3. Salut Gaetan…

Merci
